#103: Heartburn, Reflux & LPR: Root Cause & Natural Solutions15 Feb 202200:15:32

Are you feeling the painful effects of heartburn or reflux, or even something called ‘silent reflux’, causing milder but frustrating symptoms of pain, sore throat, burning, or postnasal drip. Maybe you’ve even been taking medication to stop the burning in your stomach?

Whether you have reflux or silent reflux, it’s really important to identify what’s going on, and get to the root cause of the issue, because that constant spillage of stomach contents and acid into your oesophagus and beyond can cause serious damage.

In most cases, the key root cause is a lack of stomach acid. I’ve mentioned it many times on the podcast before, but STOMACH ACID IS SO IMPORTANT!

Come and listen in while I chat all about:

• Heartburn, Reflux, Indigestion, GERD/GORD & LPR - what’s the difference and what’s at the root cause
• Why we need stomach acid
• What happens when your stomach acid is low
• The causes of low stomach acid (and therefore the painful reflux)
• My functional approach to overcoming reflux.

#102: Parasites with Danielle Hively09 Feb 202200:38:01

Are you frustrated by insomnia, sugar cravings, teeth grinding and jaw pain, chronic skin issues, infertility or mood swings? These are just some of the symptoms that can be caused by parasites.

There’s an old saying “If you have a pulse, you have a parasite.” Eek!

We are probably all affected by parasites to some extent, whether or not they are driving the symptoms you are experiencing.

They are one of the root causes that can be holding us back from healing.

Today I chat with Danielle Hively. She is a Functional Nutrition Therapy Practitioner (like me), who specialises in drainage protocols, parasite cleansing and mould detoxification.

We are talking all about:

• The drainage pathways within your body
• What drainage is (Hint - it’s different to detoxification)
• How to improve drainage in your body
• Parasites 101
• The signs and symptoms of parasites
• And what to do if you suspect this may be an issue for you

This episode is absolutely awesome and I have no doubt you’re going to love it!

#101: Gut Microbiome Testing02 Feb 202200:15:30

Are you sick and tired of not having an answer to your fatigue, bloating, heartburn and reflux, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, or other gut-related symptoms like acne or eczema?

Gut testing may be the answer you are looking for.

This is something I use in my practice with most of my clients, because as you probably know by now, most of the people I work with are experiencing gut symptoms.

Now, why would you want to consider gut testing? It’s a really helpful tool for identifying what’s going on in your gut and getting to the root cause of your symptoms. If you’ve tried all the basics and nothing seems to help, I’d definitely suggest giving gut testing a go.

In this episode, I’ll cover:

• Who gut microbiome testing is for
• What specific things gut testing looks at
• How the test works
• The test I currently use in my clinic

If you want to learn more about the testing or order your own GI MAP test, send me a DM on Instagram or email me on hello@frandargaville.com.

#94: What You Need to Know About Fats19 Nov 202100:14:48

Do you have hormone-related symptoms like PMS or cramps, or cholesterol levels that are too high or too low, dry skin, slow wound healing, hair loss, depression, or you just need a rundown on fats and how to make sure you are getting enough (or not too much!)

Eating enough fats and the right kind of fats is so foundational to health.

I wanted to do a little series on here breaking down the macronutrients, because i think we often go so far down rabbit holes like SIBO or Candida, or special diets like AIP or the Low Histamine Diet, and we neglect the basics.

Last week we spoke about protein, so definitely go and check out that episode if you haven’t already.

In this episode we’re chatting all about:

• Why healthy fats are so important

• The key roles of healthy fats

• The different types of fats

• How much fat you actually need

#93: What You Need to Know About Protein11 Nov 202100:12:05

Are you experiencing decreased muscle mass, dry skin, hair and nails, fatigue, weakness, anxiety or even liver problems? These are some of the common signs that you may not be getting enough protein in your diet.

The reason I was inspired to record this podcast, is that so many women just aren’t consuming enough protein.

When we don’t get enough protein, we’re not getting fuel to build muscles (this is really important for the metabolism), and our blood sugar is often dysregulated, which can lead to low energy, energy crashes and anxiety. And as you will see, there are many other problems that can arise as well.

Here’s what I cover in the episode:

• Why protein is so important
• The food sources of protein
• Animal vs. plant-based proteins
• How much protein you actually need

#92: Acne and the Skin Microbiome with Yug Varma03 Nov 202100:26:39

Acne and other skin issues, like eczema, can be painful and soul-destroying. Sometimes, no matter what you do, the pain and inflammation just will not go away.

We’ve been lead to believe over the years that skin issues are purely external and happen in isolation. For example, if you have acne, all you can do is cleanse your face properly, apply topical treatment or take potentially harmful oral medications.

But if you’ve been around here for a while, I’m guessing you understand that this isn’t the case.

Acne and other skin issues are a symptom of a deeper issue. Now that could be an imbalance of the skin microbiome, as we chat about in this episode, or it could be due to poor gut health, food sensitivities or hormonal imbalances, to name a few.

I do have another episode on skin health, so If you want to learn about my take on getting to the root cause of acne, eczema and other skin issues, head to Episode 39 of the podcast.

So, in this episode, I’m speaking with Yug Varma, PhD, who is the co-founder & CEO of Phyla. Yug has 10+ years of microbiome research experience including an extensive background in bio-organic chemistry, microbiology, and synthetic biology.

We talk about:

• The causes of acne

• The skin microbiome and the importance of keeping it in balance

• The similarity between the gut and skin microbiome

• How to restore the balance without harsh products

#83: The Gut-Hormone Connection02 Sep 202100:10:49

As with so many areas of our health, we've been led to believe our hormones are working in isolation from the rest of our body. They’re disconnected, and somehow hormonal imbalances magically appear.

We may be experiencing gut symptoms, but can’t imagine it could possibly have anything to do with our hormonal issues.

In reality, our bodies are extremely interconnected systems. Our gut impacts our hormones and our hormones impact our gut.

So instead of looking at hormonal symptoms like PMS, menstrual cramps, or hormonal acne in isolation, let’s look at the gut-hormone connection and what’s at the root of your hormonal symptoms.

Today we talk about:

• What is the gut-hormone connection?
• How hormones can impact gut function
• How the gut can affect hormones
• The main factors that can cause an imbalance in the gut-hormone connection
• How to begin the journey back to balancing your gut and hormones

I have spoken a lot about what and how to eat on this podcast, but I haven’t spoken about when.

The thing is, you could eat the perfect diet, meditate every day, be taking the right supplements for what’s going on in your gut, but if you’re not eating at the right time — this could be holding you back from making progress!

In this episode, I discuss how eating too often and too infrequently can impact your gut health, and help you figure out the best way for you to approach meal timing and spacing that’s right for YOU!

We talk all about:
• Why it’s important to allow spaces between meals and snacks for your gut health
• What the Migrating Motor Complex is and why it matters
• How to know whether meal spacing and intermittent fasting is right for you

#186: 35 Lessons About Health and Healing - Reflections on My 35th Birthday16 May 202400:10:43

I turned 35 yesterday and I was sitting in a cafe with a coffee overlooking the beach here in Freshwater in Sydney. One of my friends sent me some questions to reflect on for my birthday so I sat down with my journal (for the first time in AGES) and started looking back on some of the things I’ve learned in the past year.

And then I got a bit carried away and decided to expand that list out to 35 lessons I’ve learned about health and healing, and I’m going to share those with you in today’s episode.

#63: The Emotional Root Cause with Jake Currie16 Mar 202100:41:39

Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, all the nutrient dense food, meditation and hydration just doesn’t cut the mustard when it comes to overcoming health challenges.

If that’s the case, there may be an emotional root cause to your physical symptoms.

In this episode, I interview Jake Currie, the Founder of Mind Body Masters, who teaches people how to heal themselves by resolving the emotional issues at the core of their symptoms.

We discuss:

• How emotions manifest as physical symptoms

• The sympathetic or “fight or flight” state and how that can hold us back from healing

• How to determine whether a symptom you’re experiencing has an emotional root cause

• How to start overcoming physical symptoms with the power of your mind
