Veteran's Day Special: Leadership and The Finest Hours with Vince Patton, USCG Master Chief (Ret)10 Nov 202301:03:34

High Reliability, The Healthcare FM Podcast is brought to you by Gosselin/Martin Associates. Our show discusses the issues, challenges, and opportunities within the Healthcare Facilities Management (FM) function.

On February 18, 1952, four Coast Guard men risked their lives in a howling nor’easter off Cape Cod to save 32 mariners on the shipwrecked, broken-in half tanker called the Pendleton. They brought all but one to safety in a wooden motorboat (CG36500) designed to hold no more than 12 people.

The Coast Guard called it the greatest rescue by a small boat in its history. The four men were called heroes. They shrugged it off and said they were just doing their job.

We are joined by Vince Patton, Master Chief Petty Officer (Retired), United States Coast Guard, and Ed Loughran, Owner, Charles River Wine Cellars, to discuss this incredible rescue mission.

Along the way, we ask and Vince answers if effective leaders still exist, we speak about Vince's love of his hometown Detroit Lions, and we talk about some famous US military figures.

This story goes far beyond our usual topic area of healthcare facilities management and healthcare engineering.

Manage your physical environment more efficiently11 Nov 202400:41:33

Healthcare facility operators typically use hand-me-downs; that is, they use software and products that are designed for non-facilities functional areas. They make it work, even though it doesn't really for their needs. Vytal flips that script.

It is a technology designed by facility operators for facility operators. It is software made for the areas of accountability that FM leadership manages. Vytal elevates facility management by extending asset lifespan, ensuring regulatory adherence, streamlining capital projects, and championing sustainability.

The High Reliability podcast is joined by Neil Ravitz,  Senior VP of Operations for Vytal. In this far-ranging discussion, we discuss careers, military service, academic medical centers and yes, even Vytal.

00:00 Introduction
02:00 Serving with a sense of mission
10:40 Software that ties the enterprise together
15:22 An end-to-end  healthcare facilities-centric solution

Thanks to our guests, Director of Facilities Management Robert Hacker and his CFO, Jim Corwin. Jim and Robert work for Community Memorial Healthcare in Ventura, CA.

For many directors of FM, finance, and money can be outside of their comfort zone. In this episode, Jim and Robert begin with the basics: How does a hospital get its funding? They discuss the basics of capitation and payer mixes and how they impact the FM budget creation process. They also discuss creating a relationship between an FM and the CFO built on credibility and trust.

Jim offers insights on how FM can bring even more value to the CFO/FM relationship. This is a relevant episode for all healthcare facility directors.

What's the Why? A Healthcare education podcast16 Jun 202201:08:24

High Reliability, the podcast that focuses on healthcare facilities management, presents the third episode in the Abraham Lincoln Employment Series, titled What's the Why? A Healthcare education podcast

Our guest is Jim Smith,  Director of Engineering & Emergency Management at Springfield Hospital in Springfield, VT.   Jim is well qualified to discuss the topic of education and healthcare management. Jim has both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees, but he joined the Navy out of high school and achieved his first healthcare facilities management job without a college degree. Jim had to convince Rutland Regional hospital to hire him for the Manager of Engineering role, a story he tells in the podcast.

Jim has an interesting perspective on the degree. He joined the Navy from high school, then transitioned into the commercial nuclear industry. He then became a Pastor with his church, a true career transition. Each stop on Jim's career journey prepared him well for his healthcare facility management roles. Topics discussed with Jim include:

  • Discussing the Navy's Nuclear Power School and program (4:00);
  • A career transition to Pastoral work (22:00);
  • Leaving the ministry and finding a path into healthcare facilities management (32:00);
  • On the need for a college degree at the management level of healthcare facilities (34:00);
  • Converting life and work experience to college credits, and some encouraging words for those seeking a degree while working full-time (47:30);
  • Transitioning military experience to healthcare facilities management (58:00).

The Abraham Lincoln Employment Series26 May 202200:08:42

High Reliability, the podcast that focuses on the world of healthcare facilities management, previews the Abraham Lincoln Employment Series, debuting this June and sponsored by Gosselin/Martin Associates.

We were sitting around the office recently and thought, what would happen if Abraham Lincoln sent in his resume for a facilities management job that we were recruiting? That question was the genesis of The Abraham Lincoln Employment Series

In our first episode, using Abraham Lincoln’s resume from 1865, which we created, we will apply his resume and the lessons we can garner from it to today’s chaotic employment/resume market. The debut episode will feature fun Lincoln resume facts, but most importantly, the information you can use to craft a more compelling resume in 2022.

Lincoln may have lived in the 1800s but core communication principles, which are really what a resume is, a communication tool, remain relevant today. So sign up for the seminar on June 2 at noon Eastern.
