There are steps you can take in Cosplay, or anywhere. I'll take the time in this season ending episode (at least, standard episodes coming out regularly), to tell you what my process is.
- Decide on the thing in one of the areas you’re working to fix, my 5 are Environment, Physical and Mental well-being, Finance, and Relationships.
- Write down the thin you want changed most and just write about it – what frustrates you, what do you believe you’ll get when you’re done chasing the thing – what do you have to gain or want from making an effort
- Make a goal – crazy or not and break it down
- Then…look at what really needs to go into it to get results and break it down

Selling yourself as the product to a fan is unsustainable and only works short term – you create more anti-fans in the process – focus on what’s sustainable – keep your distance if this is what you want.
It doesn’t scale like a product or service would – make the thing – video series, book, mass produce patterns, entertain, but don’t sell friendship. Find the product or value-add service that you can provide to your audience. There are many inside of cosplay.

Chose ethical money making – coning people, pandering to likes, feigning interest and leaning into obsession – all dangerous. There is inside the community a slippery slope. Make sure you want to jump in to this when you do, and understand what it will lead to.

Avoid the Main Cosplay Traps

There are a few Cosplay traps that we haven't talked about yet - more to do with cosplayers supporting cosplayers or those outside of the community who think they're doing the right thing by over-extending themselves to buy other people Cosplays.
Do not become a “Fan” and carry a torch – have friends, collabs, but do not de-value yourself into having someone be above you because they can model, or act, or are designers. There are many skills – you need to put yourself first in your own life and believe you have value – being a fan and interacting as a fan will devalue you.

Diminishing the community, your value, and only seeing others for what they make and how many followers they have reduces you. How Cosplay Traps You

The fame monster is real and cosplayers chase it. Eventually it traps you and you're just as stuck in your online world and it's customer service as you were when you were answering the phones at work and getting yelled at by customers. You begin to feel trapped.
Staying relevant, getting validated, feeling the good and bad of it – dopamine either way and that rush is what got you into your scroll hole, your outreach loop, your constantly being attached to your phone.
We crave attention, we want to be social, we want companionship – but Cosplay isn’t that. Cosplay is expression, not a means for which to gain attention.

Authentically Fake

Avoid the authentically fake influencer, cosplayer, or person. Also, don't become this person. Selling and promoting the "fake" life on Instagram just leads to so many issues with yourself, with your following, and eventually - unless you have a PR department - it comes back to find you. You can't sustain a "fake" persona unless it's all you do and that is your life. Being a persona or a public figure who shares nothing of themselves online might be what you want to be or do, and that's your choice - but know the truth of it. Know the dangers of warping what authentic really is, and yes - you'll gain and gain and grow, but will you ever achieve the fulfilment you were looking for when you do go down this road?

Do you have Con Friends? The people that only talk to you because you go to conventions and might see them there with their other friends? They might talk to you online, but ONLY about cosplay and they seem like they'd not even bother with you if you weren't gaining followers week by week? Maybe they just want to use your platform to gain more Insta-fame or for some other made up 'clout' metric. Who knows?
But we do need to talk about Cosplay at face value and when to support the full idea instead of the misinformed version of an idea or problem online in the community.

We’re only showing so much of ourselves, and that self is based in fiction – graphics, effects, quotes – it’s all made up so that you like it. Going overboard with "fake" – beyond makeup into alteration for validation and so much lack of authenticity in just being what you THINK you have to be in order to gain attention. You use terms like 'higher self' to describe what you do in order to 'fit in' to the online world, but in doing so, you can lose your audience, your friends, your sense of self, just to gain likes and follows.

There’s a difference between laziness and doing less – create space for creative ideas and projects. When you're just rushing and freaking out to get more content up to produce more reactions, you're not in a very creative space.
Pick your battles and focus your time – relax and do. It's not a race, and it's certainly not a rush. Never feel like you HAVE to cosplay – especially if it’s just a hobby – you don’t have to market yourself.

Just keeping busy isn’t the answer. Constant scrolling, fear of sitting still, fear of being passed up or passed by or just...in the past - obsolete seems to wear on us as adult cosplayers.
You can actually do a lot less and receive far greater gains and productivity out of what you do. The problem is that when you constantly push and grind, you're doing it from a weak mindset, and one which doesn't allow you to push into creativity - very much necessary for Cosplay.
All this week, I'm talking about doing less and getting more out of it. Shift the mindset.

There's A LOT that goes into bringing together a group of Cosplayers to focus on a major shoot and many aspects that you might not have through about. Arranging a shoot for you or for a team-up can be easy and fun - most Cosplayers and photographers are used to the set ups, the time involved and scheduling is much more coordinated with only two or three people. In this episode, Anthony breaks down the many large group shoots he's worked on, involving multiple shoot days, photographers, and a massive level of coordination and leadership. Not to discourage you - group shoots are amazing and being a part of them goes a long way in making friends and presenting fandoms in a very unique and amazing way - but here are tips for you to use for being part of large group cosplay shoots.

How do I validate my being in the Cosplay space, and do I? External validation will drive you crazy. Trying to manifest what you want will drive you crazy, because at it's core, it's a form or external validation - you're looking for an outside source and you're trying to will it into existence.
Instead, work on what you want to because it gives you a sense of completion or progress. Don't do it for the unknown and often upset masses.

Cosplay Judgement Day

To Judgement and never applying it in any Cosplay context whatsoever.
We do actually judge cosplayers. Not in a sense that they're not allowed to cosplay, but in the sense that we compare ourselves to others, that we want more for ourselves than we do others, and that we feel like we're not enough because of all the models and actors in the space online that are leapfrogging all of our efforts as normal humans engaged in an online hobby.
Let's end the week with a scene that I enjoy in the 1984 movie Ghostbusters, that has stood the test of time with me and continues to be something I think about when I'm creating content in the Cosplay space.
