42. "I Need to Speak to the Manager": How I Stepped into My Power31 Jul 202400:19:10

I felt like I was being ripped off, scammed even, at the auto dealership service center. Whaaat? That never happens!

Normally, my husband handles car-related things in our household, but this time, I took the lead. Knowing there would likely be a confrontation, I was wishing I could opt out this time, but I was fired up and prepared to hold my ground.

Listen in to hear the story, including:

  • Mansplaining
  • Standing up for myself when spoken over with a strong "Let Me Finish"
  • Getting the service done at zero cost
  • All witnessed by my daughter :)

41: Coaching: How to Overcome Self Imposed Limits24 Jul 202400:15:53

During an intense group workout at Red Rocks Amphitheater last week I realized the power of coaching and community. I know without a doubt that if I had been there on my own, I would have given up much sooner, and wouldn't have worked as hard.

Included in today's episode are the insights I recorded on the drive home from the Red Rocks workout. The recording quality during these parts is subpar, but the energy level was high!

Some key benefits of coaching and being part of a group include:

  • investment (I'm committed to the work because I invested $)
  • accountability (showing up)
  • consistency (improving by regularly doing the work)
  • comparison (motivating, but also need to focus on ourselves)
  • leadership (an expert guide)
  • community (encouragement from others)

While my insights were gained during a group fitness class, they apply to career and job search coaching as well. If you're in a job search and want the benefits of coaching, let's chat! As of July 24th, I have 3 openings for 1:1 coaching beginning in August. Here's a LINK to schedule a discovery call.

Also, if you're in the Denver metro area and want to join the Thursday morning summer workouts at Red Rocks with Missi, you can sign up HERE

35. Beating Imposter Syndrome - Lessons From Motherhood12 Jun 202400:10:41

This week's episode of Her Next Chapters tackles the ever-present imposter syndrome that plagues many moms. Host Christina Kohl shares her own experience of feeling completely unqualified as a parent when bringing her newborn home from the hospital.

The episode explores the concept of imposter syndrome and how it manifests in motherhood, despite the lack of formal training. From figuring out breastfeeding to navigating potty training and teenage years, moms are constantly in "learn on the job" mode.

However, this constant challenge results in incredible skills. The episode highlights the valuable transferable skills developed through motherhood:

  • Problem-solving
  • Adaptability
  • Creative solutions
  • Resilience
  • Resourcefulness
  • Decision-making
  • Time management

The message is empowering: Moms who feel like imposters in other areas of life should remember their journey in motherhood. They've faced countless challenges with no training, yet figured it out. These skills are a superpower to be harnessed and applied to any future endeavor.

The episode concludes by encouraging listeners to recognize their growth as moms and to leverage their "improviser muscles" to conquer any new challenge that comes their way.

Ready to transform your life during key transitions? In our 50th (!!) episode of the Her Next Chapter podcast, we promise to offer you profound insights on navigating identity shifts, especially for moms re-entering the workforce or facing an empty nest. Our wonderful guest, Gabrielle Ferguson, an expert consultant and leadership strategist, joins us to discuss how aligning your identity with your goals can ensure a smoother transition. This conversation is so rich in content that we've split it into two parts, with the first part airing this week.

32. Graduation Reflections: Celebrating Milestones and Embracing New Beginnings22 May 202400:13:54

As my youngest son Alex is about to graduate high school, I reflect upon my silent, and unrecognized graduation as a parent in our local school district. With 3 kids, this is a role I've held for 21 years! In this episode, I reflect on the endings and beginnings that come with graduation, not only for our children, but also for us as moms. The spotlight is on the graduate, as it well should be, but a quiet reflection on the support we've provided them over the 13 years (K-12) to get to this moment is warranted.

And as the graduates prepare for their next chapter, it's also a time for us as moms to contemplate what we want in our next chapter.

30. Practice Makes Easier08 May 202400:10:21

The topic for today's episode was inspired by my daughter who recently stumbled her way through a phone call with our veterinarian's office when we needed our dog's vaccination record emailed in time for her visit to the dog groomer.  While her side of the call was a bit awkward, she got the result she needed.

That phone call reminded me that whenever we step out of our comfort zone, it can feel awkward and messy at first. But, the more we practice showing up in new ways, the easier it becomes. And I'm sure the next time my daughter needs to call the vet, or anyone else, to ask for what she needs, it will be easier. I'd like to revise the old saying "practice makes perfect" to "practice makes easier." Instead of striving for perfection, let's strive to show up, even if imperfectly.

A common situation that causes nervousness and anxiety, resulting in some awkward conversation is interviewing for a job. If it's been a few years, those first couple of interviews can be a little rough! Like everything else, practice makes easier and mock interviews are a great way to gear up for the real thing. If you're interested in getting interview practice with an HR insider, hit me up! It's one of my favorite services I provide my clients.

Have you ever stopped to consider the myriad tasks that unfold behind the scenes of our busy lives as mothers? This week on Her Next Chapters, I take a moment to reflect on the often-unseen world of "invisible labor" we contribute to our families. Things we do, both big and small, that we ourselves don't even recognize how important they are.

As we head into new chapters in our lives, whether an empty nest or a new job, or both, taking an inventory of some of the amazing things we've done, even if quietly and in the background, can help build our confidence for whatever is next. It's time to see and acknowledge our accomplishments.

𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞? 𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐞?

A couple of weeks ago when I ran into a mental block at work, my boss (hi, I'm the boss) let me take a much needed break with the caveat that no phone scrolling would be allowed during the break.

Addiction is a strong word, but not allowing myself to zone out on my phone was much harder than I thought it would be. Once I noticed it, the constant urge to check the screen was quite eye opening!

Over the past week I've set some boundaries for myself around my phone usage and am finding that I'm much more focused and productive. Surprising, right?!

Curious to know the strategies that have been working for me? This episode dives deep into this topic - don't miss it!

26. Stay-at-Home Moms: Beat the Loneliness! Practical Tips for Building Friendships10 Apr 202400:19:55

In a recent conversation with a stay-at-home mom who is ready to restart her career, I asked her why getting a job was important to her. Her answer initially surprised me, but after thinking about it, her answer 100% made sense.

Having a job would mean she’d have friends.

Our conversation reminded me how lonely being a full-time stay-at-home mom can be. In this episode, I explore how my social connections changed throughout the different parenting stages, from all-consuming infancy with sleepless nights to high schoolers with the independence that comes with their driver’s license.  And now upon entering the beginning of the empty nest phase, what I’m doing to expand my social circle ironically mirrors what I did when I first became a stay-at-home mom.

Listen to hear some strategies to strengthen your social network (which can also enhance your job search!) According to the Harvard research highlighted in the most recent Mel Robbins podcast, your health, happiness and longevity depend on it.

24. Navigating Returnships: Exploring Returner Programs with Guest Gabrielle Ferguson27 Mar 202400:47:41

If your next chapter includes landing a job you love after a career break, you'll want to listen to today's episode. An excellent way to get your career back on track is through a returnship. These are like internships, but are created for people with mid-level career experience rather than entry-level, and typically require at least a 2-year career break.

If you are curious about returnships, also known as returner programs, you are in for a treat. I've invited Gabrielle Ferguson back to the podcast to share her insider knowledge about how returner programs benefit both the returner and the employer.  Gabrielle established a successful returner program for her previous employer and shares her advice on how to wow the hiring team in your application and interviews in these highly competitive programs.

This will be a 2-part series, with the next episode highlighting what to expect on the job as a career returner in these programs.

23. Identity Shift: We Are More Than Our Roles, Titles and Activities20 Mar 202400:09:48

As I created my son Alex's senior collage of pictures for high school, a wave of realization washed over me: these pictures showcased what he does, his activities, but do they truly capture who he is? This revelation struck a chord, reminding me that while being a baseball player or an Eagle Scout are labels, the things we DO don't define WHO we are.  That's the heart of our discussion in this week's episode of her next chapter's podcast. I invite you into a candid conversation about the profound journey of redefining our identities as we moms transition to becoming empty nesters.

We're not just discussing the 'how' of starting anew; we're exploring the 'who' that emerges when the titles fall away. Ready to uncover a sense of self that transcends your roles? Tune in for a dose of inspiration and empowerment—because who we are is so much more than our daily activities and accomplishments.

18. Why JUST is a 4-letter word moms just need to stop saying.14 Feb 202400:15:49

This episode is being published on Valentine's Day, so of course we'll talk about love, but not the romantic kind.  We'll be talking about the importance of nurturing and caring for ourselves in the same beautiful way we do for others in our role as a mom - yep, self-love.  And we'll start by eliminating the word "just" when we describe ourselves, as in "I'm just a mom." (You meant supermom, right?)  Did you know that according to salary.com the market price value of all the jobs moms perform is $184,820/year?! It's time to stop saying "I'm just a mom" and appreciate ourselves for all the incredible things we do.

9. Beyond New Year’s Resolutions27 Dec 202300:23:36

Happy New Year Friends!

2023 is coming to an end, and we’re preparing to welcome the start of 2024.

In this episode, I dive into some alternatives to New Year’s Resolutions, since according to Forbes only a minuscule 1% of resolutions result in lasting change.

Rather than quickly broken and forgotten resolutions, selecting a Word of the Year as an overarching guide to the type of growth you are seeking can be much more effective.  You’ll learn why I chose “transformation” and “investment” for my words for 2023, as well as how they played out in my life and career during the year. I’ll share my new word for 2024, and provide tips on how to choose your word for the year,  along with other ways to set goals and intentions that don’t involve broken resolutions.

8. Perspective Shift: Letting go of holiday perfection20 Dec 202300:11:54

Christmas is my favorite time of year. With the big day just around the corner, and so many tasks still to be done, honestly, it can also be the most stressful time of year.

This week I had a major perspective shift in how I view the busy-ness of the holidays. In updating an old address list for mailing Christmas cards, I received a stark reminder of the friends and family members who are no longer with us.

Reflecting on this reality has me shifting my focus on giving my time and presence rather than busyness and presents. Letting go of perfection, allowing time for self-care and social connection will be the best gifts we can give and receive this season.

Merry Christmas friends!

5. Career Pivoter & Volunteer Extraordinaire: Interview with Melissa Courdeyas29 Nov 202300:51:04

I’m so excited about this episode because I am welcoming the first-ever guest to the Podcast.

My good friend Melissa Courdeyas has graciously joined me for an amazing conversation with so many juicy nuggets of wisdom and insights I know you’re going to love!

Here's a brief summary of Melissa’s experiences:

Melissa has had multiple career pivots, from law enforcement to education to the wine industry, entrepreneurship, public office, and more. Many of these career pivots were made during the time she was a military spouse moving across the country and even the globe. She has served in multiple volunteer roles that blossomed into rewarding and fulfilling paid roles – what's called strategic volunteering. She’s done all this while being a full-time caregiver raising her two sons. With her youngest now in his sophomore year of college, she and her husband have recently moved across the country and are settling into their new community as empty nesters.

There is so much to learn from Melissa’s stories and experiences!

4: Cultivating Gratitude22 Nov 202300:15:39

This episode is being published the day before the Thanksgiving holiday, which has me thinking about cultivating a mindset of gratitude as I consider our eventual empty nest.

While I’ll miss my kids terribly when they leave home, whether for college, or gasp, for good (ouch!!), I’ll also be so incredibly grateful that they are pursuing their dreams and becoming independent adults. And while I want to hold on tightly to all the parts of our family life that are beginning to fade away, I'm also looking forward with excitement, and yes gratitude, to opportunities to pursue new things in my own life, including last-minute romantic getaways with my husband.

Later in the episode, I share a gratitude practice I learned a few years back from author Rachel Hollis that has helped me to shift my mindset about gratitude from generic (friends) to very specific (I had a great conversation with a friend today that I haven’t talked to in months and we made plans to see each other for dinner next week.) The key is to find gratitude in experiences that have happened in the last 24 hours. Doing so will train your brain to seek and find positive things throughout your day. It’s a game-changer!
