103. Wisdom and Temple in the Story of Scripture16 Mar 202600:21:54

Join our Bible Study: https://www.patreon.com/hebrewbibleinsights

What do wisdom and the temple have to do with each other? In this episode, we explore one of the most fascinating overlaps in the story of Scripture. From creation as God’s cosmic temple to Solomon building the temple in wisdom, from Proverbs 8 to Exodus 40, we trace how God orders the world in wisdom and dwells with His people in sacred space. We also reflect on how these themes come together in Jesus—the true image and true temple—and what it means for us as those being built up into a spiritual house. This conversation invites us to see the Bible as one unified story and to consider how wisdom, worship, and vocation shape our lives today.

102. Psalm 149: How the beginning and end of Psalms tells a story02 Mar 202600:33:43

Join our Bible Study: https://www.patreon.com/hebrewbibleinsights

Psalm 149 might just change how you read the entire Book of Psalms. In this episode, Matthew (MA in Biblical Literature and Semitic Languages) explores a powerful connection between the opening psalms and the closing chapters of the Psalter. Psalm 1 invites us into the way of righteousness, Psalm 2 depicts the rebellion of the nations against the Lord and His Anointed, and Psalm 149 brings those same themes to a dramatic conclusion. We trace the story of rejection, warning, patience, and ultimately judgment—while also seeing how these psalms point us to Jesus and the hope given to the humble. This conversation invites us to read the Psalms as one unified story and to reflect on what that story means for our lives today.

Read 1 Enoch with us in the Hebrew Bible Book Club: https://www.patreon.com/hebrewbibleinsights

In today’s episode, we tackle an important question: How should we evaluate biblical characters? Are they flawless heroes, irredeemable villains, or something more complex? We explore how to move beyond simplistic views by looking at the actual text and learning from the wisdom of St. John Chrysostom.

We also discuss themes of exile, repentance, and restoration. This conversation is all about embracing the depth of Scripture and avoiding the trap of false dichotomies—biblical characters are neither perfect saints nor one-dimensional sinners. There’s so much we can learn from their lives, struggles, and faith.
Join us as we navigate the complexities of these ancient stories and discover how they speak to us today.

Jesus’ last words on the cross in Matthew 27 and Mark 15 seem to depict defeat; however, when we take a closer look, His words are actually telling the opposite story! 1. And God said that it was NOT good?05 Apr 202000:14:57

We learn a lot about people from what they like AND what they don’t like. The same is true with God. What is the first thing that God doesn’t like? A perennial truth that is highly relevant for the times that we are in with COVID-19.

What the podcast is all about!05 Apr 202000:14:19

The Hebrew Bible for many people is confusing, boring, or ignored. For some of us, it is fascinating, but we want teaching with more depth than what typical church services are able to do. Having learned Hebrew for nearly a decade and taught the language since 2017, I love the language and story of the Hebrew Bible! I can’t wait to share more about my heart for this in this introductory episode.

Alex Kirk joined the faculty of Beeson Divinity School in 2024 to teach Old Testament and Hebrew after serving in global theological education for nearly a decade. He has previously taught in over a dozen countries, at schools like Ecole Superieure Baptiste de Théologie de l’Afrique de l’Ouest in Lomé, Togo, Institut Biblique de la Croix-des-Bouquets in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, and Baptistička teološka škola in Novi Sad, Serbia, as well as helping to launch William Tennent School of Theology in Colorado and serving with Crosslands Training in the UK. Both a philologist and a theologian by training, his academic interests range from biblical Hebrew linguistics and text criticism to poetry, wisdom literature, hermeneutics and theological interpretation of Scripture. His first book, Agur's Wisdom and the Coherence of Proverbs 30 (SBL, 2024), combines many of these interests to present a detailed interpretation of Proverbs chapter 30 as a coherent collection that mocks pride and commends humility as the better part of wisdom. Ongoing projects relate to the relationship of wisdom and law in the Hebrew Bible and Second Temple Judaism, the role of humor in biblical wisdom and theological interpretation of Ecclesiastes.

As the son of a pastor and an enthusiast for literature of all types, Kirk is particularly passionate about leading church leaders deeper into the text of the Old Testament to encounter God. To this end, he continually strives to deepen his own understanding of the hermeneutical reality that this ancient text is the word of the LORD to his people. Alex is married to Meghan and they have three daughters, Rue, Willa and Janie. Their family attends Christ the King Anglican Church (ACNA) in Hoover, Alabama.

87. Order and Meaning from the Writings/Ketuvim of the Hebrew Bible with Rabbi Chaim Eisen16 Sep 202401:20:34

Rabbi Chaim Eisen is joining us from Israel! He has been teaching, editing, and publishing on the Hebrew Bible, Talmud, Midrash, Medieval Jewish Philosophy, and more for over 40 years. In this episode, we talk about the third section of the Hebrew Bible called the “Ketuvim” or the “Writings.” The order of the books of the Hebrew Bible are very different from the order that many experience in Bibles in Christian communities. The way that books are grouped can impact how we interpret the books themselves. Learning about very old traditions of the Hebrew order can yield interesting insights for those engaging with the Hebrew Bible. We give special attention to Psalms, Job, Proverbs, Ruth, Chronicles, and even talk about the Holy Spirit in Rabbinic tradition.

101. Why Daniel 4 is one of the most underrated chapters of the Bible16 Feb 202600:48:51

Join our Bible Study: https://www.patreon.com/hebrewbibleinsights

Daniel 4 is one of the most surprising and underrated chapters in the Bible. In this episode, Matthew (MA in Biblical Literature and Semitic Languages) and Dr. Nathan French (PhD in Hebrew Bible and the ancient Near East) walk through this wild and deeply edifying story line by line, exploring Nebuchadnezzar’s second dream, Daniel’s bold counsel, the mysterious “watchers,” and the king’s humbling descent into madness. Along the way, we uncover foundational biblical themes: the danger of arrogance, the necessity of humility, God’s kingship over the universe, and His persistent desire to lead people toward repentance and restoration. Daniel 4 reminds us that no one is too far gone for God’s mercy—not even the king of Babylon—and shows how true repentance leads to restoration and renewed allegiance to God. This chapter is both gripping and accessible, making it an incredible text for personal study, church teaching, and small groups.

How do we make sense of not only the story of David and Bathsheba, but also the number of scenes that ensue after involving a number a difficult passages relating to David? Dr. Nathan French (PhD Hebrew Bible and the ancient Near East) presents his original academic research on Divine Retribution in the Throne Succession Narrative (2 Samuel 9-20 and 1 Kings 1-2). The hermeneutical principle of divine retribution sheds light on how the authors of Scripture and their neighbors crafted narratives and what they were trying to emphasize. Nathan shares a number of other insights into the ancient Near Eastern context such as: how does the concept of levirate marriage apply to Bathsheba and how does the designation of Uriah as a resident alien impact the story? The presentation is followed by a discussion between Nathan and Matthew Delaney (MA Hebrew Bible and Semitic Languages).

The Book of Psalms is far more than ancient poetry—it’s the prayerbook of the Church and a vital guide for encountering Jesus. In this episode, we interview Chad Bird, author and scholar who specializes in teaching the Old Testament to Christians. We ask a variety of questions related to his newest book "Untamed Prayers." We explore why the Psalms are essential for Christians today. We discuss how the New Testament interprets the Psalms, the connection between David and Jesus, and how to see Christ even in Psalms that aren’t quoted in the New Testament. 67. Dr. Lena-Sofia Tiemeyer: Making Sense of the Hebrew Prophets30 Oct 202301:00:27

How do we make sense of the Hebrew Prophets? The Latter Prophets of Isaiah-Malachi are some of the most enduring books of the Hebrew Bible. While this literature is full of meaning, these books can be some of the most difficult to understand. We interviewed a scholar on the prophets to learn more about how to approach this part of Scripture.

Lena-Sofia Tiemeyer is Professor of Old Testament Exegesis at ALT School of Theology, Sweden. She holds a PhD in Divinity/Hebrew Bible from Oxford, and completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Hebrew Bible and ancient Near Eastern studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Her specialty is the Prophetic Literature, though she is also working in the lament literature, the reception history of the Bible, Ezra-Nehemiah, and 1-2 Samuel. Professor Tiemeyer has authored six monographs and three textbooks. She has published numerous book chapters in edited volumes, as well as a plethora of journal articles across some of the most prestigious, peer-reviewed journals in Hebrew Bible studies, while also having presented countless times at some of the largest and most esteemed scholarly meetings around the world. She is currently Editor for the Journal for the Study of the Old Testament, and has been praised by her peers as “an accomplished scholar and editor with an international reputation for careful and nuanced scholarship.” She currently lives in Örebro, Sweden, with her husband and their two daughters.

Who are the Nephilim in Genesis 6? The answer to this question plays a key role for the plot of the Hebrew Bible. This rabbit

hole is deep and fascinating. Our journey takes us to comparing ancient manuscripts, analyzing Hebrew text, and exploring the Mesopotamian tradition of divine beings and a flood. The conversation finishes with how this topic is related to the important theme of divine sonship in the Bible.

99. Hebrew language insights from Psalm 114 Jul 202501:04:11

Read the Bible in Hebrew with Matthew: https://www.patreon.com/hebrewbibleinsights

Psalm 1 is rich with meaning, and reading it in Hebrew brings out layers we often miss. In this episode, Matthew (MA in Biblical Literature and Semitic Languages) walks through key Hebrew language insights that deepen our understanding of this foundational psalm. We explore the meaning of the word “happy” or “blessed,” the beautiful poetic style of the psalm, and how Hebrew parallelism and verb tense in verse 1 set the tone for the whole psalm. We also dive into what it really means to “meditate” on God’s law, why Torah is central to this psalm, and how Psalm 1 connects to Genesis, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and ultimately, to Jesus Christ. Whether you know Hebrew or not, this episode will help you appreciate the beauty and depth of Psalm 1 in a whole new way.

61. Deuteronomy isn't just a book...it's a treaty: a Bible study on the form and message of Deuteronomy10 Jul 202300:55:55

Deuteronomy has one of the most famous lines in all of Scripture that Jesus quotes as part of an answer to the question: "What is the greatest commandment?" The Shema is the core of a Jewish prayer that is one the of the oldest prayers in the world. Deuteronomy 6:4 and following are famous for good reason...but what is the entire book of Deuteronomy about? What was supposed to be a Bible study on Deuteronomy 32 quickly became a discussion about the form and message of the book as a whole. Here it is! (We will get back to Deuteronomy 32 in a future episode!)

We talk about a number of topics

  • The big picture message of Deuteronomy
  • Deuteronomy is a Treaty Covenant Document, which is a well attested genre in the ancient Near East
  • Is Deuteronomy more like 2nd millennium BCE Hittite treaties or 1st millennium BCE Neo Assyrian treaties?
  • What does “love” mean in Deuteronomy and how ancient Near Eastern treaties help us understand this.
  • Hebrew language insights from Deuteronomy 32
  • The connection between Deuteronomy 32 and Genesis 1
  • Wisdom and Deuteronomy
  • The relationship between faith and risk
  • God as Heavenly Father in Deuteronomy

58. What did Adam, Eve, and Israel hear...the Sound, Thunder, or Voice of God?16 May 202301:00:41
What is the voice of God and how does this impact the revelation of God? The Hebrew word קול can mean sound, voice, and even thunder. We trace this word through important stories in the Hebrew Bible to see what we can learn about God from this. What does קול mean in Genesis? What sound of God did Adam and Eve hear in the Garden of Eden? What does it mean that God walked in the “cool of the day”? What type of sound did they hear? His voice? A different kind of sound? The thunder of the storm of God? What did Israel hear at Mount Sinai? Thunder or the voice of God?
