Traditionally, December is the wettest month of the year, but 2025's January is proving to be very different with a month's worth of rainfall in a day (Jan 10th) and non-stop rain thereafter. The Night Safari in Mandai is celebrating its 30th anniversary, and the big draw has always been to see animals at night; lions, elephants, rhinos - the bigger, the better, you might think when it comes to entertainment value. And yes, when the lions roar, it's a sound that inspires awe and terror at the same time. Out and about again with my parabolic mic, I decided to track down a single cicada and record it going through a full cycle of the iconic cicada song. Alkaff Mansion is a good spot to get away from the city and record cicadas... but there are also plenty of crows there. Jurong Bird Park, featured in early episodes early in 2020, shifted in January 2024 to Mandai, to be next to Singapore Zoo, Night Safari & River Wonders.
