#160 - Modern Leadership: We Need Communication, Transparency, and Empathy...NOW16 Jun 202000:31:10

Less than half a year into 2020, we've experienced global, tectonic shifts that are still being felt now. It's time for modern leadership.

Common attributes of leadership, such as assertiveness and charisma, are simply no longer enough in the current climate. As society becomes more connected and multi-faceted, our leaders must evolve as well.

Communication, transparency, and empathy. Geoffrey Woo, founder of H.V.M.N., strongly believes these are traits essential for effective leadership. A leader that listens, a leader that unites. This is an element that has largely been lacking during these times of crises...this is what must be fixed.

The H.V.M.N. Podcast will be donating all of the ad revenue we receive during the month of June to Talent x Opportunity (TxO) fund, a fund designed to invest in underrepresented and underserved founders. We hope that the leaders of the next generation will build a healthy future for all of humanity.

#159 - Blood Glucose Regulation: A Guide to Glycemic Index, Continuous Glucose Monitoring, & Intermittent Fasting · Kara Collier, RDN28 May 202001:01:41

Kara Collier, the Director of Nutrition at Nutrisense, is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Nutrition Support Clinician who specializes in glucose control and metabolism.

Kara, drawn to the power of continuous glucose monitors (CGM's), has meticulously experimented with various foods and the impact they would have on her blood glucose levels. By having real-time data tracked over years on a spreadsheet, CGM's have been indispensable tool that has helped (& continues to!) fine-tune her diet.

With her previous experience working in traditional hospital institutions and becoming fed up with the shortcomings of standard care (recalling regular instances where metabolically-impaired patients were given soda & highly processed foods), Kara knew that truly personalized nutrition was the future - and she is working tirelessly to spread the message.

For example, the effects of intermittent fasting between men and women seem to differ in substantial ways that are recently coming into light. Geoff & Kara dive into the nuances of that much-requested topic, low-carb and ketogenic diets, quality of food, and more in this podcast episode!

With no stone left unturned from the past, Lance Armstrong pulls back the curtain on his cycling career, why he's thriving under quarantine (& decided to ditch alcohol), and how he's focusing on the path forward.

Averaging 400-500 watts over a 30-minute interval (something a typical 25-year-old could do for only 30 seconds) Lance had nearly superhuman-level abilities.

"It really wasn't [the doping]. At this point, I'm not here to fool or lie to anybody...but it wasn't. That was step 11 in a 10 step process. We put a lot of work into the team."

In this podcast interview, Geoff Woo and Lance discuss the current coronavirus epidemic, beating cancer, war stories from the Le Tour days, preserving a competitive spirit, and how the global sport of cycling should evolve.

#157 - Coronavirus Crisis Finally Reveals Metabolic Dysfunction as the True Pandemic? · Dr. Paul Saladino12 May 202001:19:51

"Absolutely there are diets that can protect you against coronavirus. The health of an individual at a metabolic level is...everything."

Dr. Paul Saladino is the leading authority on the science and application of the carnivore diet. He has used this diet to reverse autoimmunity, chronic inflammation and mental health issues in hundreds of patients, many of whom had been told their conditions were untreatable.

Since the beginning of the global COVID-19 crisis, Dr. Saladino has been boldly voicing his opinions on how various countries implemented their lockdown policies and why the best, science-driven way to protect yourself begins with the root cause of so many diseases in the first place...

The state of your metabolic health.

According to this study (https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/met.2018.0105), only 12% of Americans are considered metabolically healthy. While there has not been formal random controlled trials published just yet, there is a strong case to be made with existing and emerging correlating data / science suggesting that the state of one's metabolic health is an essential factor when faced with the virus.

In this in-depth podcast interview, Geoff Woo & Dr. Paul Saladino discuss the timeline of the coronavirus, how skewed messaging is being pushed by the media, his evolved guidance for the carnivore diet and how insulin resistance is linked to immune system function, and even delve into some fascinating hypotheses that put the coronavirus' actual danger to human health into question.

Producer's Note: This episode was originally recorded on 05/05/2020.

#156 - Apolo Ohno (8x Olympic Medalist) Reveals His Mental Hacks for Success05 May 202001:07:47

Apolo Anton Ohno has a remarkable track record as an athlete, becoming the most decorated American Olympian at the Winter Olympics and inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. Post-sport career (& post "Dancing With the Stars" fame, as we're sure some are aware), Apolo continues to blaze new paths for himself and dedicates much of his time empowering others to reach their own goals.

In this podcast interview, Apolo firmly states that he was at a factual, physiological disadvantage during his short track speed skating competitions when compared to his competitors.

So, how did Apolo come out so frequently on top? What was he doing differently? How did he win 8 Olympic medals?

As much as he was training his body for peak physical performance, he was also training his mind...if not even harder than his body.

Pushing his mental game to the absolute limit, sharpening it, and continuously channeling it (all the way from training to race day) was his secret weapon. His mind was the key to success.

The mental resilience and competitive edge he built up during his athletic career were never lost. Apolo, with unwavering discipline, continually adapts that performance mindset to support ongoing personal and professional growth. From following a cyclical keto diet to intermittent fasting, Apolo stays on top of both his mental and physical game.

#155 - Intermittent Fasting During Quarantine & Effects on Immune System - Should You Do It?01 May 202000:44:17

Could intermittent fasting or time restricted eating help you stay safe from the coronavirus? Is it a good idea to put the human body under metabolic "stress", when many are already faced with a particularly stressful time?

It's not a simple "Yes" or "No" answer.

In this podcast, Geoffrey Woo & Dr. Latt Mansor explore the existing scientific literature behind intermittent fasting and dive deep into a recently published study, which showed that healthy participants actually boosted their immune system through 30 days of consecutive fasting. Extrapolating data from both this study and others, they come to their own conclusions and offer their best guidance to how one should think about intermittent fasting during the COVID-19 crisis.

#153 - Running Through Hell: Enduring Ultrarunning & Boosting Mental Health · Lisa Tamati23 Apr 202001:26:10

Lisa Tamati is a professional ultra endurance athlete who has crushed some of the toughest endurance events in the world, such as the grueling Badwater Ultramarathon held in Death Valley. Lisa became the first woman from New Zealand to complete this infamous race.

Lisa’s adventures have taken her far and wide, including a harrowing expedition through the Libyan Desert that nearly killed her. Despite having over 140 ultramarathons under her belt and achieving various accomplishments, Lisa has also struggled with her mental health - battling with her self esteem, body image, depression, fear, and anxiety.

Ultrarunning forced Lisa to learn how to sharpen her mental health and push her physical limits even through traumatic events.

In this interview, Lisa goes into great detail about how both her athletic & general life experiences (both positive & negative) made her become the woman she is today. When her mother had an aneurism and fell critically ill, she was unresponsive to the doctors’ standard of healthcare. Lisa then took matters into her own hands and saved her mother’s life through a self-researched protocol that incorporated hyperbaric oxygen therapy, targeted nutrition, nootropics, and more.

After 4 years, Lisa’s mother is now healthy - regaining her cognition, peripheral vision, and driver’s license. Lisa has ran through hell & back, and dedicates much of her time now motivating and training others become the best they can be.

You can follow Lisa and her journey on her own podcast here: https://www.lisatamati.com/page/podcast

#152 - Eat More Fat? Eat Less Carbs? The Priority is PROTEIN (P:E Diet) · Dr. Ted Naiman10 Apr 202001:06:08

With over 100,000 patient interactions and two decades of experience as a board-certified Family Medicine physician, Dr. Ted Naiman continues to accumulate a wide spectrum of knowledge regarding nutrition, fitness, and the keys to optimal human health.

Most recently, Dr. Naiman collated his work into his book: 'The P:E Diet'. He makes it clear that he does not follow specific diet dogma (keto, paleo, carnivore, vegan, etc), but that his P:E Diet (protein vs. energy) explains the success of every successful diet out there.

In an excerpt in the book, Dr. Naiman states...

"What EXACTLY were the differences between the diet and exercise of these healthy elites versus those plagued by chronic disease? Gradually I came to the realization that the principles at work were unbelievably simple, and equally simple to implement. The rules for diet were so basic that I couldn’t believe I hadn’t realized them earlier. Target nutrient density—mostly just protein and minerals—while minimizing toxins, including the energy toxicity of exceeding your carbohydrate and fat storage."

Host Geoff Woo and Dr. Naiman discuss the delicate balance of metabolic substrates, why protein should be the building block for an energy-dense diet, the preferred intermittent fasting & time-restricted feeding schedule, the state of the carnivore community, the potential flaws of the popular 'carbohydrate insulin hypothesis', and accessible tips for bodyweight training / weight loss.

#148 - An Electrifying Neuroplasticity Biohack: Exploring Brain Stimulation · Dr. Hayley Teasdale18 Mar 202001:08:32

Dr. Hayley Teasdale is the new Lead Scientist over at Halo Neuroscience. Halo developed a headset (Halo Sport 2) that applies a small electric current (a method specifically known as transcranial direct current stimulation) to the part of the brain that controls movement, activating neurons so they fire more often when you train. The more neurons fire, together, the faster pathways are built in your brain.

Prior to joining Halo, Dr. Teasdale came from a research background focused on non-invasive brain stimulation and motor control in Parkinson's Disease, with a particular angle on training proprioception and balance in order to prevent falls.

In this episode, Geoff and Dr. Teasdale discuss...

  • The importance of proprioception, which is the sense of self-movement and body position. It is sometimes described as the "sixth sense". As modern society evolved, have humans (at some level) lost their ability to truly tap into this sense?
  • How does brain stimulation work mechanistically? What literature supports positive outcomes using transcranial direct stimulation? What are the pros and cons of TDCS, along with other forms of brain stimulation?
  • The ever-evolving brain and how neuroplasticity evolves as we age, train, and learn.

#147 - Forging a Fat-Fueled Family: Countering Culture with Nutrition & Education · Danny Vega, M.S.14 Mar 202001:35:34

At this point, we've heard of many adults following the ketogenic diet to great success, but what about developing children?

When Danny Vega, an active athlete who received his M.S. in Human Performance from University of Florida, discovered the ketogenic diet in 2016...he never looked back. With so many years of pushing and stressing his body, experiencing the benefits of reduced inflammation, improved mental clarity, and overall well-being, Danny knew then that low-carb nutrition was a key pillar for his health.

His ketogenic lifestyle also made an influence on his family, including his young children. They all follow the keto diet, genuinely love it, and report similar yet varying benefits that help each member prosper in their own way. Maura Vega (@fatfueledmom), suffered from eating disorders, body dysmorphia, and postpartum depression...keto corrected all of that. Dean, the youngest, has had astounding improvements in his eczema and mood. Desmond, the eldest, felt an immediate increase in energy and improvement in his allergies and asthma.

In this episode, Geoff and Danny have a balanced chat about ketogenic nutrition, fitness & muscle-building, philosophy, public education, and much more.

The Relationship Between Ketosis, Mitochondria, & NAD+/NADH Ratio: A Dr. Richard Veech Obituary · Geoff Talk24 Feb 202000:16:31

Dr. Richard Veech spent decades studying human metabolism, with his scientific contributions, (particularly in the keto field), being highly lauded among his colleagues.

"He has redefined our understanding of metabolism," said Dr. Thomas Seyfried of Boston College.

In an airplane crash of 48 passengers in 1968, only 10 survived...including Dr. Veech. He was named a Hero of New Hampshire for providing medical care to the survivors even though he had a broken back.

At age 84, Dr. Richard Veech passed away on Jan 30, 2020.

We dedicate this episode of "Geoff Talk" to Veech's memory & scientific legacy. Geoff starts off with Dr. Veech's biographical facts, dives into some of his most interesting contributions to science, and discusses how Dr. Veech's work inspires his thinking and gives an indication to where the future of ketone metabolism, human performance, and healthspan is headed.

#219: Resistance Training to Build a Resilient Body w/ Sal Di Stefano23 Mar 202301:13:59

Sal started as a professional in the fitness industry as a trainer at the age of 18. His passion for fitness, combined with his love of people, quickly propelled him into big box gym management by the time he was 19 years old. During his career in gym management, he grand opened some of the largest gyms in the California Bay Area and was often recognized as a top performer in sales, production, and team leadership, earning him accolades from top industry leaders.

At the age of 24, he left the commercial gym industry to open his own fitness and wellness studio after he became dissatisfied with the big-box gym approach to health and fitness. He wanted to bring a wellness-based well, rounded approach to people. In his small studio facility, he brought in hormone and nutrition specialists, acupuncturists, gut health professionals, and meditative/bodywork providers, along with fitness trainers.

This well-rounded environment formed the voice that Sal is often currently lauded for. It was during his time in his wellness studio that he figured out how to solve the hardest and most persistent problems with fitness, health, and wellness. His approach led to long-term success with his clients, and he developed a behavioral-focused approach toward health and fitness.

After a decade of running his studio, he met Doug Egge, the current producer of Mind Pump, and shortly after, he met Adam Schafer and Justin Andrews. They quickly hit it off due to their different backgrounds but similar approaches to fitness and health, and they decided to start a fitness and health podcast. Mind Pump was launched and quickly became the number-one fitness and health podcast in the world.

Find out more about Sal at https://www.mindpumpmedia.com/ and @mindpumpmedia on social media.

Key point topics and studies mentioned:

1. Theoretical and practical side of resistance training

2. What is the MAPS fitness program

3. How important is tracking calories and his thoughts on the "calories in, calories out" notion

4. Sal's advice for people to break plateaus in training

#142 - Summiting Metabolic Health: MHS 2020 Recap, Joe Rogan Goes Carnivore, & the Latest in Keto Science05 Feb 202000:34:03

Fresh from the Metabolic Health Summit (#MHS2020), Geoffrey Woo and Dr. Latt Mansor sit down to chat about their experience interacting with the community and learning from all the fascinating presentations.

The Metabolic Health Summit was created to bring two worlds together: science and society. Over four immersive days, Geoff and Dr. Mansor were exposed to some of the most cutting edge research and applications of ketosis and metabolic therapies from leading physicians around the world. It's where research meets the real world.

In this episode of the H.V.M.N. Podcast, Geoff and Dr. Mansor discuss...

  • The presentations Dr. Mansor found especially interesting (Dr. John Newman, Dr. Mary Newport, & Dr. Benjamin Bikman to name a few), and sharing nuggets of the latest science he thought would be most valuable to our listeners.
  • Meeting the community! Many of the guests we've had on the podcast were at MHS in-person, along with fans of the podcast. Geoff & Dr. Mansor express their gratitude and joy interacting with everyone. The movement is truly growing!
  • Perhaps unsurprisingly, given recent popularity / controversy, one of the big topics underlying the summit was the #carnivore diet. Geoff and Dr. Mansor discuss the diet, shouting out Joe Rogan's instagram post on closing out #WorldCarnivoreMonth with truly amazing results on his physique and autoimmune condition.

#140 - The Science Of Dopamine Fasting: More Than Just A Fad ft. Dr. Cameron Sepah20 Jan 202001:44:28

"Dopamine Fasting" is a recent hot trend for improving productivity, mental discipline, and essentially structuring your time with what matters most to you...without modern distractions.

Dopamine is neurotransmitter involved in our brain’s system for motivation, reward, and pleasure.

Even when encountering seemingly innocent actions such as scrolling through your social media feed and gawking a cute puppy picture..dopamine is getting released in the brain. Could periodically abstaining from constant dopamine releases result in a better version of yourself?

Dr. Cameron Sepah, a clinical professor of psychiatry at UC San Francisco and returning podcast guest, popularized dopamine fasting in August when he published a "Dopamine Fasting" guide and made the rounds in the press.

“Taking a break from behaviors that trigger strong amounts of dopamine release (especially in a repeated fashion) allows our brain to recover and restore itself,” Sepah wrote in a Vox article.

Without such breaks, we become habituated to high levels of the chemical, so we feel the need to seek out ever-higher doses of stimulation to achieve the same pleasurable effect.

With principles of abstinence not unlike intermittent fasting, it's not a hard reach to connect the parallels between intermittent fasting and dopamine fasting. Cutting-edge "biohacker-y" practices tend to be an easy target for attracting dismissive articles that fail to take into account the actual science.. Unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly apparent that optimizing articles for "clicks" and "virality" are becoming standard practice from even the most well-respected outlets.

In this no-holds barred podcast, we interview the man behind the "Dopamine Fasting" movement.

In this episode, Geoff & Dr. Sepah discuss:

· Dr. Sepha's evidence-based definition of 'dopamine fasting' vs what is being portrayed in popular media such as the NTY.

· The science behind brain addiction, specifically through the lens of modern technology driven by social media, self-validation thought the internet, & more. Cameron's approach derives from cognitive behavioral science, a well-studied field of science.

· The dissatisfaction Cameron felt when reading the the latest guidelines from the American Psychology Association: "Many characteristics commonly linked with masculinity — such as courage, strength, compassion, leadership, and assertiveness — are often associated with positive psychological and behavioral health. However, according to the psychological research cited in the guidelines, some masculine social norms can have negative consequences for the health of boys and men."

Without a doubt, it's a hefty & multi-faced topic. We hope you enjoy this honest conversation!

Less is More: The Case for Minimalist Fitness & Animal Nutrition · Jerry Teixeria · #13907 Jan 202001:36:58

Minimalism can be applied to improve various aspects of one's life.

Jerry Teixeria, faced with the realities of raising children and attending to his family, going to the gym 6x a week quickly became unsustainable.

Shifting his focus to bodyweight training & progressive calisthenics in the comforts of his own sunny backyard, Jerry reached his goals of physique, healthspan, & more...all by dropping the weights.

This shift in his training approach even carried over to his nutrition protocol. Once a follower of the common "6 pre-prepped meals a day" advice preached by the traditional fitness community, Jerry simplified his eating habits and attained even greater results. From intermittent fasting (warrior diet) to eating a carnivore diet (correcting his autoimmune symptoms in the process), Jerry has run a wide gamut of self-experiments that he dives deep into on this week's podcast.

In this episode, Geoff & Jerry discuss:

  • The benefits of progressive bodyweight training and how one can get started. Why could this more primal approach be more effective than the standard heavy squat lifts you see others pushing through at your local gym?
  • The importance of continually overloading your workouts in order to avoid "plateauing". In the case of body-weight exercises such as handstands, pushups, and pull-ups, what does Jerry suggest one can do to ensure overloading is happening during a routine?
  • Jerry's experience with the carnivore diet, and why he is now more "carnivore-ish".
  • The effect of exercise on metabolism and longevity (mTor, IGF-1)

Good vs. Bad Science: Keto Hype, Cancer Research, & Fighting Misinformation · Kevin Bass, MS · #13824 Dec 201901:37:53

Kevin Bass is unafraid to publicly call out those in the health & nutrition community he deems irresponsible...perhaps even dangerous.

Kevin states: “Bad science will hurt people”.

Passionate about truly helping people, his mission is to stop misinformation from spreading.

Albeit a controversial figure in the ketogenic diet community, we’ve found that Kevin isn’t as “anti-keto” as some would say. He’s an MD/PhD student whose thesis research actually focuses on the ketogenic diet and cancer. He’s acutely aware of the positive, neutral, & negative research, and does his best to bring a balanced perspective backed by published science.

In this episode, Geoff & Kevin discuss:

  • What about keto is overhyped & what is actually exciting? For example, is it curing diabetes or just putting it into remission? Does it have the potential to treat cancer?
  • Sensationalism vs. pragmatism: How can we create better science for the public? How can we determine who is a legitimate science-based health expert and who is not?
  • Kevin’s own personal health journey, nutrition protocols, challenges faced in medical school, & what motivates him.

Immediately Reduce Glucose Levels Even After Drinking 75g of Sugar · Research Roundup (Ketone Ester)11 Dec 201900:12:26

It's the holiday season, and that often means big, happy meals with friends and family. That apple pie (that you may or may not give in) would be a glucose challenge for your body to handle.

What if you can preemptively improve your body's metabolic ability to handle that serving of pie with exogenous ketones? A pair of studies from University of British Columbia by Prof. Jonathan Little and Oxford Prof. Kieran Clarke researched how H.V.M.N. Ketone impacts glycemic response in both normal and obese populations.

Before participants consumed a 75g glucose drink, they consumed a ketone monoester. The results?

Reduced glycemic response and markers of insulin sensitivity.

In this episode of Research Roundup, Geoffrey Woo explains the studies' design, analyzes the specific results, and finally, what one could take away from the science and apply it to their personal life.

On a keto "cheat meal" day, could you perhaps reduce the negative effects a carb-heavy meal would have on your metabolism? Let's find out.

What NO Politician Is Saying About Healthcare · Geoff Talk26 Nov 201900:18:17

Fixing healthcare costs & health insurance is part of standard political speeches & debates for US presidential candidates today.

Everyone knows there’s a problem with the healthcare system. However, virtually all of the politician's discussions & proposals are based on bandaid solutions.

The real issue? The healthcare crisis begins with our widespread health crisis.

No politician is talking about how modern lifestyle and industrialized nutrition is destroying the health of millions of Americans.

No politician is going to talk about this because telling the masses that their comfortable lifestyle is unhealthy and dangerous is not what they want to hear.

Healthcare is primarily fixing people when they're broken. Our current society and culture are breaking too many people, too quickly.

In this video, Geoffrey Woo dives deep into the issues of healthcare, population health, and what he believes we can all do to steer society in a better direction.

Sleep is known as a common "pillar of health", yet is increasingly neglected in our modern society. Although technology has constantly been advancing, our beds have remained largely the same.

Stanford Professor Craig Heller & Matteo Franceschetti from Eight Sleep joins the podcast to discuss the science of better sleep.

How can we translate the "gold standard" of a clinical sleep environment to our own sleeping routines...our own homes? What sleep biomarkers make up a good night's rest? How important is body temperature for optimal sleep?

In addition, we discuss:

  • Sleep technology: The drawbacks of wearables, envisioning a future in which we can control and create our own optimal "sleep environment", & the power of thermoregulation.
  • How measuring "quality" of sleep works in a home setting and in a clinical setting

Fasted vs. Fed Exercise: Which Should You Do? · Research Roundup15 Nov 201900:21:56

We all know intermittent fasting and exercise are healthy, practical ways we can improve our health & performance.

Is it possible to use them together?

Would you benefit more from a fasted workout vs. a "fed" workout?

In this episode of Research Roundup, Geoffrey Woo takes on this very question.

By analyzing a recent study that found fasted workouts improved the metabolic health of obese men, Geoff provides his framework for how you can utilize fasted workouts to meet your goals...or if you should at all.

Vegan Keto: Managing Type 1 Diabetes, What to Eat, & Effects on Cholesterol · Dr. Carrie Diulus · #13305 Nov 201901:24:06

Dr. Carrie Diulus is a US board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon, endurance athlete, and thriving Type 1 diabetic.

Her choice of fuel for success?

A plant-based, vegan, ketogenic diet.

It's common to think that ketogenic diets need animal-based nutrition sources, yet Dr. Diulus is a shining example for how a ketogenic diet can successfully be adapted to suit the individual.

In this episode, Geoff & Dr. Diulus discuss:

  • What led Carrie to choose a ketogenic diet to combat her Type 1 diabetes? Where does she get high sources of plant-based fat and protein from?
  • With Dr. Diulus' holistic approach to patient-centered care, how is she seeing ketogenic / low-carb diets improving surgery outcomes in her own patients?
  • Multi-day fasting, exogenous ketones, and other insulin-targeting interventions for improving metabolic health

Ketones Improve Intestinal Stem Cell Function - Research Roundup30 Oct 201900:13:59

A new study, conducted by MIT, explored how a ketogenic diet and exogenous ketones govern signaling biological programs that maintain intestinal stem cell function.

We know ketone bodies like beta-hydroxybutyrate have signaling roles in the body and can help regulate things like appetite, metabolism, and neurotransmitter function.

This study provides evidence that BHB itself may play a key mediating role in maintaining intestinal health too.

Do ketones themselves (and not necessarily through fasting or a ketogenic diet) alone drive some of the metabolic and functional benefits? What were the exact findings?

Let's find out.

Carnivore Conquers 7-Day Fast, Bacterial Infection, & Depression · Mikhaila Peterson · #13225 Oct 201901:00:30

Mikhaila Peterson has officially coined her version of the carnivore diet: The Lion Diet.

Strictly sticking to ruminant meat, salt, and water cured Mikhaila of her autoimmune issues back in 2018. Most recently, she's been experimenting with multi-day intermittent fasting as another lifestyle and nutritional intervention.

While Mikhaila initially targeted for fat loss, she also found that fasting was a profound tool for mental health and emotional stability.

What else happens when a carnivore embarks on a 7-day fast? Let's find out.

In this episode, Geoff and Mikhaila discuss:

  • 7-Day Fasting: Experience, biomarker data, lessons learned, and tips & tricks
  • The carnivore diet and how it may have affected Mikhaila's microbiome (resulting in C. Difficile infection)
  • Evolution of the carnivore community

Heart Health & Diabetes: How Diet & Hypoxia Affects Metabolic Flexibility · Dr. Latt Mansor · #13118 Oct 201900:41:55

Dr. Latt Mansor is the new Research Lead of H.V.M.N, and we're proud to share his fascinating research and upcoming work with our listeners!

In Dr. Mansor's thesis study, he found that the diabetic heart retains metabolic flexibility to adapt to hypoxia. Hypoxia is a condition when the body lacks adequate oxygen. Since diabetic hearts are more prone to hypoxia, getting closer to understanding if it could adapt to it was an important finding.

For context, diabetes and hypoxia have opposing effects on metabolic substrates in the heart. Diabetes promotes fatty acid oxidation and suppresses glycolysis, whereas adaptation to hypoxia suppresses fatty acid oxidation and promotes glycolysis.

The key result of Dr. Mansor's paper was that diabetic hearts did indeed adapt to chronic hypoxia, by increasing glycolysis and decreasing fatty acid oxidation.

In addition, Geoff & Dr. Mansor discuss:

  • The implications of the study that was awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Medicine, which discovered how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability
  • The complex relationship between diet, oxygen, and HIF (our oxygen-sensing pathway)
  • The potential of ketones to improve metabolic inflexiblity

Carnivore vs. Vegan Diet: Separating Science from Dogma · #130 ft. Frank Tufano14 Oct 201900:58:28

Animal-based vs. plant-based nutrition - What's most optimal for human health & performance?

Frank Tufano, a follower of an animal-based, zero-carb diet for over 5 years, has garnered quite a unique reputation on Youtube. Along with his informative videos on the ins-and-outs of a carnivorous lifestyle, Frank doesn't shy away from scrutinizing the rapidly growing (and arguably more culturally accepted) plant-based diet.

In this podcast, Geoff and Frank discuss:

· The cultural impact of a recent study (published in Annals of Internal Medicine) that concluded that the current public-health recommendation to eat less red and processed meat isn’t backed by strong evidence

· Cooked meat vs. Raw meat: What are the proposed benefits for consuming raw meat or fermented foods?

· Analyzing the common arguments for veganism (i.e. reducing environmental impact) and how Frank debunks them

Animal-Based, Ketogenic Ultra Runner CRUSHES 100 Mile World Record · #129 ft. Zach Bitter04 Oct 201901:02:23

With the 100-Mile American Record already under his belt (for 5+ years), ultra endurance athlete Zach Bitter just outdid himself on August 25th, 2019.

He crushed the 100-Mile World Record, setting a 6:48-mile pace and besting the previous world record by nearly 10 minutes.

Zach is notable for his low-carb, high-fat, animal-based lifestyle as a professional endurance athlete. He first transitioned to the ketogenic diet during an off-season, and immediately felt his sleep, energy, and recovery improve.

By developing a flexible, fat-adapted metabolism, he's able to tactically use carbs to maximize racing performance.

In this episode, Geoff & Zack discuss:

· Zack's 100 Mile World Record, his mental game during racing, and why he got into ultra-endurance sport

· LCHF diets for therapeutic cases vs. performance cases...does an athlete have more "leeway" with eating carbohydrates?

· Carnivore diet for leaky gut & autoimmune issues

Why We Age, and How We Don't Have To · David Sinclair's "Lifespan" [BOOK REVIEW]01 Oct 201900:29:20

"Aging is a disease, and that disease is treatable."

In his new book, "Lifespan", David Sinclair has proposed a radical new theory of aging, suggesting that the aging hallmarks are symptoms of epigenetic changes that occur over time, but that the original genetic code remains very much intact. If we can reset the code, can we slow, stop or even reverse aging? Sinclair believes we can.

Geoffrey Woo, after digesting "Lifespan", has formulated some interesting thoughts based on the information given and hypotheses proposed in the book.

In this book review, Geoff details the core concepts of aging, the practical ways we can slow it, & his final verdict on Sinclair's bold theory for extending longevity.
