Instead, Ashley Koff, RD, suggests focusing on exchanges.Transitioning into a new year can be inspiring, but it can also be discouraging.

All around you are blasts encouraging you to change: "new year, new you" is just one of the popular phrases.

But, the very concept of "change" can subconsciously indicate that you're doing something wrong.

Instead, Registered Dietitian Ashley Koff suggests focusing on exchanges, not changes.

Start off by thinking about what you're doing right or where you're finding success. Recognizing that will help you continue that success and promote forward movement.

Also, decide how you want to invest your time and feel good about it. Don't beat yourself up for not cooking every meal for yourself or your family if you don't enjoy spending time in the kitchen. You can still focus on proper nutrition by incorporating certain ingredients in simple meals.

One of Koff's favorite ingredients is hemp seed, which is what she calls a nutrient balance enabler. It's also a great source of protein (complete protein) and essential fatty acids, including the "glamour fatty acid," GLA.

Listen in as Koff shares more nutrition nuggets, as well as her take on what the new year can mean for you.
Magnesium 101: Mother Nature's Muscle Relaxant For Ultimate Self-Care13 Jan 201600:09:43

http://radiomd.com/media/k2/items/cache/309391498957ede3797d442f51ebe704_Generic.jpgUp to 60 percent of women are not getting enough magnesium on a daily basis. With our compromised soil and the over-processing of modern-day food, research suggests that there's been a 30-90 percent reduction in magnesium intake over the past few decades.

And, up to 60 percent of women are not getting enough magnesium on a daily basis.

Why is magnesium so important?

According to Registered Dietitian, Ashley Koff, magnesium is like Mother Nature's muscle relaxant.

Remember, you have many different types of "muscles" in your body... your heart is a muscle just as your bicep, and your entire digestive system works as a muscle to "move things through."

Certain minerals, especially calcium, work in opposition of magnesium. Think of your digestive system. If you're combating your magnesium intake with calcium intake and it's out of balance, you may experience constipation. On the other hand, when that balance is corrected, you will feel the ease of healthy digestion.

Koff says that magnesium in tablet or capsule form is not as effective, because your body needs to break it down first before it can be useful. She prefers either powder or liquid form.

If you're looking to get some magnesium in food form, good news.... cacao (chocolate) is extremely rich in magnesium.

Listen in as Koff joins hosts Andrea and Lisa to share more about the benefits of magnesium, as well as why it's so important for optimal health.

Whether you've fallen off the wagon or are starting to exercise for the first time, what is the best way to reach your fitness goals?

Bedros Keuilian is the founder and CEO of the world's fastest growing indoor fitness boot camp franchise: Fit Body Boot Camp. He joins Andrea and Lisa to share his best advice for getting your best body, this year and beyond.

First, Keuilian advises 30 minutes of high intensity interval training (HIIT), 3-4 days a week. This type of workout will burn up to 600 calories as well as create the after-burn effect for up to 32 hours post-workout. The key is to make sure you surpass the "fat burning" zone at points in your workout.

Second, it's important to set short-term goals (30 days) as well as long-term goals (3-6 months). At Fit Body Boot Camp, the theme is "accountability and community," which sets the environment for success. You look forward to going, because you're with other people who are striving for their own goals.

Third, the fastest path from A-Z in terms of weight loss/fat loss is HIIT and a proper diet. But, you will still get results if you aren't doing the high intensity training. And, you'll realize all the other benefits of fitness, such as stress reduction, better sleep, and more energy.

Finally, Keuilian shares some tips for staying on track of your fitness goals:

  • Plan out your workouts ahead of time to make sure you leave yourself enough time to get in a good workout.
  • Don’t overdo the dieting; make sure you allow yourself a planned “cheat day” to reward yourself for your hard work.
  • Don’t get discouraged if you miss a workout or two, just make sure to jump right back into your routine.
  • Although you may eat more throughout certain times of the year, try to stay on a consistent eating schedule to keep your metabolism up and running.
  • it’s okay to have dessert, just remember portion size and try not to overindulge in anything.
  • If you can't get to the gym, be sure to get as much of a workout in as possible at home, even if it’s only a couple sets.

Those individuals with eczema are especially subject to irritation.

Dr. Cheryl Lee Eberting is a board-certified dermatologist and a past clinical research fellow of the Dermatology Branch of the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She has conducted years of research on the underlying causes of sensitive skin, and has discovered that certain individuals do not make the lipids necessary to optimize the skin barrier.

Dr. Eberting has studied (and developed) technology which replaces these lipids and protects the pH of skin.

These products both avoid the chemical reactions to ingredients of everyday products (itching, burning, redness, etc.) and address the underlying cause.

Listen in as Dr. Eberting joins hosts Andrea and Lisa to explain more about her research, the solutions she's developed, and how you can overcome sensitive skin to achieve skin that's youthful, soft, and free of wrinkles.

For instance, coffee is very acidic to the body. It takes 35 cups of alkaline water to neutralize one cup of coffee or cola.

Also, even if your coffee is labeled "organic," it's difficult to guarantee that the beans were grown, harvested and shipped properly.

Coffee can put extreme distress on your adrenals, which can lead to all sorts of hormonal and body imbalances.

True, coffee does have some benefits, such as its antioxidants, but so do things like fruits... particularly berries.

Many types of tea have caffeine as well, so if you're drinking coffee for the "kick," you can do it in a healthier way.

Listen in as Carol Alt joins hosts Andrea and Lisa to share more about the problem of coffee, as well as ways you can get your "kick" in a healthier fashion.

There are so many hidden toxins that you bring into your home during the holidays, from artificial trees to synthetic fragrances. There are so many hidden toxins that you bring into your home during the holidays, from artificial trees to synthetic fragrances. Even the cookware you use to make all your holiday feasts and goodies can contain harmful chemicals.

Lisa Beres, Certified Green Building Professional, joins Naturally Savvy hosts, Andrea Donsky and Lisa Davis, to discuss which toxins are infiltrating your home and how you can avoid them.

Here are her best tips:

  • Artificial trees are made with polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which contains lead and other dangerous chemicals. These chemicals can get into the dust in the air, so even if you're not constantly touching the tree, there is a residual effect.
  • While real trees are a great option, they can harbor pollen, mold and other airborne irritants that some individuals simply cannot tolerate. In that case, you can look for a "PE" tree, made with non-toxic polyethylene.
  • Remember to continually damp dust and wipe any ornaments or decorations that you're pulling out of closets or the attic... again, dust is the main conduit for indoor air pollution.
  • Poinsettias are exceptional at removing formaldehyde from indoor air, so make sure you place a few of them around your home.
  • Watch out for scented fragrances (candles, scented sprays) and avoid paraffin wax candles, which are petroleum-based. Look for candles made of soy or beeswax, and ones that are scented with essential oils.
  • Don't forget to change your furnace filters as well and invest in an air purifier; both are quite affordable.

Listen in as Beres shares even more tips for creating a healthy holiday home.

Paper-Train Your Problem Relatives & Employees for the Holidays16 Dec 201500:09:42

http://radiomd.com/media/k2/items/cache/6443b8e8c60b90c035d65fc79562a1cc_Generic.jpgSince you can't dis-invite a difficult relative or employee to your holiday party, what can you do?The holidays bring celebrations of all kinds, from family get-togethers to office parties.

Unfortunately, there always seems to be one or two people who come with a negative attitude and are intent on bringing others down with them.

Instead of putting up with their behavior this year, what are some tricks you can use to turn their frowns upside down?

Mark Goulston, MD, author of Talking to Crazy: How to Deal with the Irrational and Impossible People in Your Life, joins hosts Andrea Donsky and Lisa Davis to share his expertise in the field of negotiation

Dr. Goulston says you can actually train these people to be positive. One tactic is to call them ahead of time (or, if you're a female, have a male call... men asking for help is often received better) and say something like, "I need your help with something. You're an important person. We don't know who of the other party attendees has been suffering throughout the year. We need you to be the person to welcome people, take their coats, get them a drink." Essentially, you are giving them a positive task.

The worse they will come back with is, "I don't know if I can do that." What they're NOT going to say is, "I can't do that, I was planning on ruining the party!"

Remember, difficult people often feel like the world has mistreated them, and being difficult is their way of saying "screw you!"

Another thing to keep in mind, says Dr. Goulston, is that job burnout and stress are often caused by dealing with difficult people, not from too much work. You constantly have to put a lid on how you'd like to respond, which causes you even more stress. You certainly don't want to take that attitude into your office holiday party.

Listen in as Dr. Goulston shares more tips for dealing with difficult people, as well as why they are so difficult in the first place.

Such a statement says a lot about how we perceive wanderers.

However, revered Taoist philosopher Chuang Tzu claimed that those who wander are not only on the right path, they are also often the happiest.

When Tzu lived twenty-four hundred years ago, he asserted that carefree wandering, the art of moving through life with a free and happy heart, regardless of how turbulent the journey might be, was the Tao of true happiness.

Award-winning author and Taoist teacher, Derek Lin, joins Naturally Savvy hosts Andrea Donsky and Lisa Davis to share some of the Chuang Tzu's most beloved parables.

Some of the most illuminating lessons show you how to:

  • Enjoy the life journey, even when it’s turbulent.
  • Use Tao cultivation to help choose wisely at the crossroads of life.
  • Follow the Tao to become a people lover, not a possession lover.
  • Remove obstacles and complexity to discover one’s true potential.
  • Use intuition to discern and remain on the right path.

Celebrated for their accessible, down-to-earth examples, Chuang Tzu’s teachings demonstrate that the Tao is everywhere, not just in holy places or in meditation.

Registered Dietitian, Ashley Koff, believes there are actually three simple things that can keep you healthy and happy during the holiday season (and all year round).

She joins Naturally Savvy host, Lisa Davis, to share these top three tips.

Sleep

No pill, no food, no exercise can replace what sleep can do for you from a health perspective.

Try to stick with a reasonable bedtime, and aim for five out of seven nights of good sleep. More than two nights out of your routine will throw you off. Remember, it's about quality, not just the amount of hours you get. You might get into bed, but your brain could still be buzzing.

Finally, do things during the day that will engage your energy or energize you more.

Hydration

This is probably the easiest tip to incorporate, but the one that's forgotten about as the weather gets colder. Instead of an iced tea for your caffeine break, you may be doing a latte. People also tend to turn towards soups or other high-sodium foods this time of year, which causes you to retain water. Your body cannot do its proper detoxification and elimination when you're dehydrated, nor can it effectively use the nutrients you're ingesting.

Focus on your water consumption and get plenty of vegetables.

Incorporate Elderberry

Elderberry engages the whole spectrum of your body's immune system and can actually work very quickly to cut off the "triggers" of illness. The best way to get elderberry is either in liquid or capsule form; both will get you highly-concentrated results (just make sure you are buying organic versions).
How the Power of Belief Affects What You See & Don't See09 Dec 201500:09:43

The brain has its own "eye." You may think you see with your eyes, but you actually see with your brain.

What you believe largely determines what you see and don't see, mainly because you've already predetermined where you'll look and where you won't look for answers.

If you keep looking in the same places you've always looked, you're not going to get anywhere.

True, belief is intangible. But, scientifically, when you choose to believe (rather than fear), positive changes happens chemically within the brain.

Dan Castro is an award-winning author, an attorney, and serial entrepreneur. He joins Naturally Savvy host, Lisa Davis, to discuss how your beliefs help determine what you see and don't see, as well as share very specific, scientific reasons as to how this phenomenon works.

  • Belief stimulates the prefontal cortex (our problem solving center) with blood, nutrients, and oxygen. Fear robs the prefrontal cortex of blood, nutrients and oxygen and shifts them to the pons and the medula (at the base of the skull).
  • Belief stimulates creativity and problem solving skills.
  • Belief floods your system with dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins, all of which give you confidence and courage to act.
  • Belief gives you the ability to embrace the absurd and the impossible. It allowed Columbus to sail West in order to find a way to the East.
  • Belief allows you to see things with the brain that you can't see with your eyes.
  • Belief gives you the incentive to keep looking for solutions long after everyone else has given up.
  • Belief stimulates cell growth and the creation of new neural connections. Fear generates cortisol, which shrinks your cells and weakens your immune system.
  • Belief affects your chemicals, your hormones, your breathing, your heart rate, and the way your brain functions.
  • Belief affects the way your taste buds work (five bottles of wine at different prices; the most expensive and the least expensive were exactly the same wine).

Your lips get chapped, your hands might crack and feel raw, and your nails may become brittle and break more easily.

However, winter isn't the only culprit.

As you age, certain compounds in your body decline, especially collagen.

Collagen is the second most abundant substance in your body, and is found in most of your tissues. Supplementation of collagen can help rebuild some of these tissues, both in your skin and the connective tissue in your joints.

Hyaluronic acid is another compound that can help moisturize your body, inside and out. It works very quickly, sometimes within a day or two. And, biotin is a compound that can strengthen your hair and nails.

Finally, avoid sugar as much as possible, as it can also add to dry, wrinkling skin.

Holiday parties are a big part of the problem. As Carol Alt puts it, "Festive food is always fattening."

Carol suggests eating a snack or small meal before heading out to the party, even something small like raw cheese and flaxseed crackers can give you that "base" so you don't immediately reach for the fatty, salty options.

Another big issue in terms of over-indulgence is alcohol.

When you get to the party, don't hit the hard stuff first. Start on seltzer with cranberry and lime (or orange and lime), and don't have an alcohol beverage until you have had two of those. If you haven't eaten before you get to the venue and start drinking right off the bat, your inhibitions are lowered and you might end up pigging out.

Listen in as Carol shares some of her top picks for holiday snacks and dishes, as well as other tricks she uses to prevent over-indulgence.

But, many conventional toothpastes contain toxic ingredients.

Lisa Beres, Certified Green Building Professional, discusses the top five toxins you should avoid in terms of your oral and dental care.
  1. Fluoride: very toxic when ingested at high levels.
  2. Saccharine: a sweetener that has been linked to bladder cancer among other health issues.
  3. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS): has been known to cause microscopic tears in mouth (which can lead to canker sores).
  4. Carrageenan: linked to gastrointestinal inflammation and ulcers.
  5. Propylene Glycol: main active ingredient in anti-freeze that's used to soften cosmetic products. It has been linked to damage to the central nervous system, liver, and heart.

The dangers can also reach beyond these toxins. The average toothbrush can contain 10 million bacteria, including E. coli and staph.

And, 22 percent of these teens say that they have considered suicide.

The good news is that this study also found that getting active four times a week can reduce these suicidal thoughts and actions by 23 percent.

According to special guest and Certified Personal Trainer, Joey Thurman, "These teens might think that they don't have the ability to be active.

They are ashamed to fail so they don't even want to try. The less they exercise, the more weight they gain, and the less athletic and powerful they feel."

Fortunately, there are ways to make bullied teens feel more confident about exercise.

"You have to start small," Thurman says. "These teens probably aren't going to want to exercise in public or places where they could get made fun of.

But, they might like the idea of trying a hip hop dance DVD in the privacy of their basement, or taking a hike along a nature path. Or, a bullied teen might flourish in a self defense class or in a more alternative exercise class like a tap dance class.

The idea is to help them understand that they have the right to be active... as well as the responsibility."

You are not alone.

Many individuals face questions and concerns when trying to determine the right vitamins, minerals, and supplements to take.

The tricky part is, everyone is different.

In fact, people who eat extremely healthy diets and live clean lifestyles still might suffer from vitamin deficiency.

Why?

For one, the soil is not as rich in nutrients as it used to be. Many people are eating less red meat, which can result in an iron deficiency. Cutting back on your iodized salt intake may cause a lack of essential iodine. And, the focus on skin cancer and staying out of the sun has resulted in quite a few individuals suffering from not enough vitamin D.

The goal is to achieve a balance for all vitamins and minerals. It's one of the reasons guests Romy Block, MD, and Arielle Miller Levitan, MD, created their company, Vous Vitamin, which works to personalize vitamins and supplements for each individual. The website even offers an online assessment to help determine where you might be deficient.

Listen in as Dr. Block and Dr. Levitan join Naturally Savvy host, Lisa Davis, to explain more about the specificity of vitamins, minerals and supplements, as well as why supplementation is so essential, even if you live a clean, healthy life.

Ceramides For Ultimate Self-Care for Smooth, Supple Skin11 Nov 201500:09:43

The key may lie in ceramides.

Ceramide oils make up 35-40 percent of the binding matrix that maintains moisture and protects the surface of your skin. Think of them as the mortar that binds bricks together.

But, ceramide levels decline as you age, and you won’t get enough of these nourishing lipids through creams, lotions, or topical formulas.

In fact, special guest Dr. Mike Smith of the Life Extension Foundation says that ceramides are the most important thing you can do for healthy skin; even above improving your collagen. None of the other methods work optimally unless you boost your ceramides and solve the problem of transdermal water loss.

In the Life Extension formula, the essential fats are pulled from wheat germ oil. Because no proteins are used, the process avoids the potential for an allergic reaction in those who may have a wheat sensitivity.

Listen in as Dr. Mike joins Andrea and Lisa to share more about what ceramides are and why you should be supplementing with them on a daily basis.

For instance, instead of an iced tea, you may choose a chai tea latte.

Rather than a salad with raw veggies, you may turn to hearty soups and stews.

While these warmer options may taste delicious, it's important to remember that you're also getting more salt and less water.

Registered Dietitian Ashley Koff says one way you can combat all that extra salt is to keep a food journal as the weather is transitioning. If you notice you're thirsty or having sweet cravings after a hearty soup, it's a sign of too much sodium.

You can always choose smaller portions or look for low-sodium options. Or, add avocado and/or potato, which are good sources of potassium and will balance out the extra salt.

You can also turn to the foods and spices that are naturally warming. Chai has spices that have a warming impact on the body. Adding herbs and spices to your soups will also have the same effect.

Finally, to up your nutrition overall and "beat the winter blah," Ashley advises that you make sure you're getting your vitamin D, magnesium, and other essential nutrients.

Listen in as Ashley joins Andrea and Lisa to share more tips for winterizing your liquid nutrition, as well as tricks for making sure you stay hydrated, healthy, and happy this winter season.

When you're in pain, exercise may seem like the last thing you want to do.

But, if you remain sedentary, it could lead to weight gain, which causes even more pain.

Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum has been working with fibromyalgia and chronic pain patients for many years. He joins Naturally Savvy host, Lisa Davis, to share some tips for performing healthy and safe exercise if you're suffering from either of these debilitating conditions.

  1. Start off with doing water exercises in a warm-water pool. The weightlessness is easy on your joints, and the warm water helps loosen your muscles.
  2. When you stretch, put heat over the areas that give you the most pain. If you have widespread pain, all throughout your body, soak in a hot bath with Epsom salts before you stretch.
  3. When you're comfortable to ramp up your exercise, get a pedometer to track your steps. Dr. Teitelbaum suggests increasing your steps by 50 each day. Don't go too hard... "no pain, no gain" is not the mantra you want to live by.
  4. Take the supplement ribose after exercise. This will help ease any discomfort.
  5. Being intimate with your partner can seem like a lot of work, especially if you're in constant pain. But, it's one of the best ways to get some exercise and boost your "feel good" hormones.

Listen in as Dr. Teitelbaum shares more about these methods, as well as other simple ways to reduce your pain.

Well, that's how nail polish came about, based on the lacquer used in that same paint.

Unfortunately, with pretty, polished nails comes toxic exposure.

Lisa Beres, Certified Green Building Professional, says you need to watch out for the "toxic trio" which includes:

  • formaldehyde: a carcinogen
  • toluene: a toxin that may cause birth defects and developmental problems in children of pregnant women who have had extended exposure
  • dibutyl phthalate (DBP): has been linked to birth defects in studies involving lab animals

Beres says you should be looking for polishes that are "3 Free" or "5 Free" (in addition to the toxic trio, nail polishes can also contain camphor and formaldehyde resin).

Now, a new chemical in nail polishes, TPHP, is ending up in human bodies. TPHP is an endocrine disrupting chemical commonly used in plastics and in foam furniture.

Even products labeled "healthy" aren't necessarily free of dangerous chemicals, so you have to truly investigate the brands you use.

Beres joins host Lisa Davis to share more about the dangers of nail polishes and polish removers. She also lists specific brands that are the safest to use, as well as ones you should stay away from.

The key is getting creative with what you DO have access to.

This is something Laura Theodore, the Jazzy Vegetarian, has been perfecting for years.

No organic or fresh kale at your disposal? Substitute collard greens, Swiss chard, baby spinach, or any other dark, leafy green.

But, eating vegan is more fulfilling than just eating a salad every day.

For instance, some of Theodore's favorite dishes make use of quinoa. This grain provides a dense mouth feel with all the protein, just as if you'd been eating meat.

There are also many creamy dishes you can whip up without dairy by using nut milks and other plant-based milks (i.e. coconut milk). You can also steam white potatoes or cauliflower. All of these options give you the same creamy consistency, with all of the taste.

Tune in as Theodore joins host Lisa Davis to share more about The Jazzy Vegetarian and her book Laura Theodore's Vegan-Ease: An Easy Guide to Enjoying a Plant-Based Diet, how she came to be such an expert, and some yummy vegan recipes.

In fact, it can be taken internally to improve digestive health (especially for addressing acid reflux), support your immune system, reduce harmful toxins, increase nutrient absorption and soothe occasional muscle and joint discomfort.

Acid reflux is a problem for many individuals, and our fast food, processed food society doesn't help much.

Pharmaceutical and OTC acid reducers work to eliminate acid reflux, but they can have unwanted side effects, including destroying and blocking the necessary acid in your stomach.

Aloe balances your stomach acid naturally and doesn't inhibit your natural digestive acid. It brings your digestive pH back into balance.

Another benefit is that when taken orally, aloe can coat your esophagus and start to heal it.

Listen in as Jack Brown of Lily of the Desert joins hosts Andrea Donsky and Lisa Davis to share more about the benefits of aloe, both externally and internally.

But, how you think is also extremely important in how you express health.

According to Dr. Jay LaGuardia, negative thinking can have just as big of an impact as eating a decadent piece of chocolate cake.

Plus, mental and emotional angst can manifest as physical ailments.

In his practice, Dr. LaGuardia would often see in his patients that an underlying physical ailment was resolved, but the emotional component was not being dealt with and so the patient still suffered.

How can you start thinking more empowering thoughts?

It's not easy, especially when many of the negative internal thoughts and dialogue were "programmed" into your brain at an early age. That early programming (that you've accepted as "truth") has to be addressed and changed.

Meditation, mindfulness, and prayer can be extremely helpful in order to filter out the negative clutter.

Affirmations are also quite effective. A whopping 80 percent of your daily thoughts are negative; thoughts of what you're NOT. Affirmation helps re-program your mind by creating intentions of what you want. It recharges and reprograms your positive mind.

But, make sure you're affirming what you want, as opposed to what you don't want. "I am healthy and fit vs. I am not fat." Also, use both words and emotions; say your affirmations out loud with vigor and excitement.

Finally, Dr. LaGuardia advises to embrace the discomfort of being so positive (because it's going to feel awkward at first). It really will work, once you accept it as truth.

Listen in as Dr. LaGuardia explains more about what negative thinking does to your physical body, as well as ways to turn off that internal dialogue.

Before you ditch your bacon and turn to an exclusively plant-based diet, there are some things about this study (and others) to consider.

Registered Dietitian Ashley Koff says the key, no matter what kinds of food you're eating, is to eat less. Define exactly what an "appropriate portion" is. For meat, that's typically the size of the palm of your hand.

The second factor of importance is to look at the quality of the meat you're eating. Is it grass-fed? Organic? Or, chock full of antibiotics and other preservatives?

Processing used to be a good thing; a healthy thing in fact. You wanted to be able to preserve that slab of meat so it would not go to waste. Now, manufacturers are processing food to be readily available, in large quantities, and so that they last a really, really long time on the shelf.

Finally, Koff says it's essential to maintain a healthy digestive system. If you don't, you're not able to break down those meats and it can lead to any number of health issues.

In the end, studies like these are needed, and the research will continue. But, says Koff, don't get too wrapped up in the details. Eat less, eat well, and maintain a healthy digestive system and you'll be well on your way to overall great health.

As a parent, it may be your worst nightmare.

All that candy, with all that sugar and other unhealthy ingredients, especially artificial food colors and dyes.

Food coloring has been considered a neurotoxin, causing hyperactivity and other attention issues in children.

But, it's the holiday... how can you say "no" to your kids when it comes to eating their favorite loot?

Kathryn Guylay says the worst thing you can do is just take the candy away with no real explanation. Kids don't always understand what "unhealthy" means, or the long-term consequences eating bad foods can have.

Instead, learn what motivates your child. In Guylay's own experience, she discovered her son really does not like to be taken for a fool. So, she explained to him how many of the food manufacturers paint a "pretty picture" on the front of a food box but by reading the ingredient label, the deception can be detected.

Every child is going to be different, so try to find something that will speak to your child.

Perhaps you can relate it to physicality... How does your child's body feel? How does eating badly impact their athletic or academic performances? The key is to educate and empower your kids. The more they can learn, the better able they are to make choices.

Listen in as Guylay joins Andrea and Lisa to share more tips and ideas for making sure your kids learn to eat health on holidays, as well as all throughout the year.

http://radiomd.com/media/k2/items/cache/9db8c1d1ac40fea8178d785809b3c4fe_Generic.jpgCleansing is not a one-time event. You're taking in toxins just as fast as you eliminate them from your body. With the holidays approaching, you might be in a cleanse conundrum.

Do you detox and cleanse now, so you're all ready to eat those indulgent holiday foods?

Or, do you say "forget it" until after the holidays, when the damage has been done?

Actually, special guest Dr. Stewart Lonky says if you're thinking about cleansing that way, you're thinking about it all wrong.

Cleansing is not a one-time event. You're taking in toxins just as fast as you eliminate them from your body.

Dr. Lonky says that the majority of toxic chemicals in your body that impact the way your body manages fat come in through the foods that you eat. When you understand this, you can take a conscious approach to eliminating the bad foods and adding in more of the good ones.

You can also do things to prevent the absorption of the toxins. Dr. Lonky advocates his process of AIPE:

Accept that you're exposed to toxins.
Identify the toxins that are entering your body.
Prevent those toxins from causing your harm.
Eliminate the toxins.

Eating organic is a great way to prevent toxic load. Even though there's no such thing as completely toxic-free, even if it's organic, it's a tremendous improvement.

Another thing you can do is learn to read food labels. Avoid as many processed and canned foods as you can.

And, learn which foods and elements have "special powers" in helping your body eliminate toxins. For instance, cilantro binds to heavy metals, organic toxins, insecticides/pesticides. Clay products like activated charcoal, as well as activated zeolites, all bind toxins and prevent them from being absorbed.

Dr. Lonky says that if you make these habits a daily practice, you'll be doing far more good than an occasional cleanse or detox.
