Ep.120 Empathy, Boundaries, and Mental Health in Parenting Adult Children with Dr. Gail Saltz02 Sep 202400:49:55

I received a request from a listener to cover the topic of challenging relationships with adult children, and I was floored to get many responses from other listeners who were also having similar issues with grown kids. On this week's episode, I sit down with the esteemed Dr. Gail Saltz, a clinical associate professor of psychiatry and psychoanalyst, columnist, bestselling author, and television commentator.

You know the old saying, bigger kids, bigger problems. Ever wondered how to manage adult children who seem to repeat regrettable choices? We cover that and much more, offering practical advice on developing adult-adult relationships and balancing empathy with self-care.

Dr. Saltz brings her vast expertise in family dynamics to the forefront, addressing the emotional toll of parenting adult children while offering actionable steps to handle issues like substance abuse and mental illness. We dig into the necessity of setting boundaries, fostering resilience, and the complexity of maintaining authentic relationships while protecting the privacy of our children and family dynamics.

Lastly, Dr. Saltz tackles the sensitive subject of suicidal ideation, emphasizing the power of open communication and the hope offered by treatment options. We discuss how to encourage grown children to become independent, the psychological hurdles they face, and the impact on long-term relationships when resentment is present.

This episode is packed with compassion, expert insights, and real-world strategies to help you navigate the intricate landscape of midlife challenges, relationships, and mental health.

Ep.20 Women for Adventure19 Sep 202200:34:07

When I think of a girls' trip, my mind goes to a sandy destination with the latest beach read or sitting on floaties in a lake chatting for hours with my besties from college.  What if you had an opportunity to hike to Machu Picchu or walk the Camino in Spain with a group of women, who are seeking new experiences, goals and passions, enabling them to step out of their comfort zone for real personal growth?

After a long and successful career as an executive in the travel industry, Sally Bassett took sixteen women on an adventure in Peru, a trek of 28 miles over four mountain passes to Machu Picchu.  Since 1995, Women for Adventure has been a catalyst in bringing hundreds of women together on trips worldwide.  The organization is also very philanthropic, giving back and supporting programs for the enrichment of young girls called Girls for Success.  We love that!

Sally’s passion toward life, creative nature, and spiritual approach have been keys to her success.  She has led groups to over 120 countries as a result of her 40+ year career in the travel industry where she went from flight attendant to CEO.  Her favorite quote is by Helen Keller, “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.”

You can just feel Sally's excitement and energy coming through in this podcast!  She was a delightful guest who loves people, has a zest for life and a can-do attitude.

If would like to find out more about upcoming trips or you would like to start a local chapter of Women for Adventure, there is information on the website.

Ep.19 Season One Wrap-up - Short and Sweet12 Sep 202200:07:24

Ep.18 An LGBTQ+ Journey of Love and Acceptance05 Sep 202200:32:18

When our children are born we may have in our mind a pre-written story of hopes and dreams of how their lives may play out.  Perhaps you envision your son or daughter becoming a doctor or architect, and they choose to be a dancer or follow their dream of becoming a chef.  Sometimes they choose a different path than what we imagined for them.  What if your child identifies as a different gender or gay?  What if both of your kids identify as LGBTQ+?

In episode 18 of the podcast, Holly Bridgers shares the journey of her children, Georgia and Hope, and the process of how she came to terms with her story not playing out exactly as she had planned.  This was such a heartfelt and honest interview, and I thank Holly, Georgia and Hope for allowing us to have a peak inside of their loving LGBTQ+ family.

In this episode Holly and I discuss:

  • The childhood years and the coming-out process
  • Coming to terms with identifying LGBTQ+
  • Navigating social norms, labels and nomenclatures
  • How to support your LGBTQ+ children
  • Georgia and Hope's social media presence
  • Holly's words of support to other LGBTQ+ families

Ep.17 Midlife Strong: We Really Are What We Eat29 Aug 202200:39:21

With midlife comes some evident changes such as loss of muscle mass, brain fog and diminished energy, to name a few.  We are quick to attribute these to  menopause and a decrease in hormones, but it's not always!  As women age we are prone to nutritional deficiencies, and we have higher micronutrient needs.  Could eating more mindfully be the answer?

Nutritionist, Maryann Jacobsen, has written many books on nutrition geared toward children and families, but as she approached her midlife years, Maryann started to feel that she needed to address her own health and diet, and that is when her research began on women, the aging process and the impact of the food we eat.  She doesn't follow the trends, but rather assumes a practical approach based on real science.  I can't wait to read the book she is currently writing on women and midlife nutrition!

This was such an eye opening interview!  I have re-written my weekly shopping list, and I am reassessing how and when I eat.

In this episode Maryann and I discuss:

  • It's not just menopause
  • Important biomarkers - iron, vitamin D and B12 levels, thyroid and cholesterol
  • Free Women's Biomarker Guide available at www.maryannjacobsen.com
  • Magnesium food sources - nuts, seeds, leafy greens
  • Maintaining body mass - resistance training and protein - how much do we really need?  1.2 grams/kg of body weight or roughly 25 -30 gams per meal
  • Leucine is also important - eggs, chicken, salmon, nuts, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt
  • Nitric oxide - responsible for heart health and circulation, increased exercise performance and recovery
  • Food sources for nitric oxide - leafy greens, celery, beets, meat
  • Real food is always the safest option but there are nitric oxide supplements such as Super Beets and Neo 40 - always check with your healthcare provider before adding supplements to your diet
  • Synthesis of nitric oxide begins in the mouth - antibacterial toothpastes and mouthwashes kill the good bacteria - Maryann recommends Revitin toothpaste - available at Revitin.com and other retailers
  • The importance of choline - brain fog anyone?   Sources - eggs, meat, fish, nuts, cruciferous veggies
  • Keto and Intermittent Fasting - Maryann's thoughts

Ep.16 The Skin You're In22 Aug 202200:40:03

Coming from a family of physicians, Mona Foad had always wanted to be a doctor, until she fell in love with art history in college.  While she loved her job at the Smithsonian, Mona realized she was missing the ability to really touch people.  Another degree and medical school brought her to the world of dermatology, where she gets to treat the whole patient with her medical skill and her love of beautiful aesthetics.

In this episode Mona Foad, MD and I discuss:
Her GRASS philosophy
Growth factors - Skin Medica is her favorite - these contain cell signaling proteins
Retinoids - Tretinoin works more quickly but may be more drying than Retinol - start slowly
Antioxidants - Vitamin C - make sure it is l-ascorbic acid 10-15%
Sunscreen - See below
Specialty Products - Hyaluronic acid

Mona says everyone should be wearing a UVA/UVB sunscreen.  UVA are the aging rays and UVB are the burning rays.  Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are preferred.
Some of her favorites cosmetically elegant brands:
Elta MD
Colorescience (They also make a powder sunscreen that is not greasy - loved by golfers)
Skin Medica
Alastin (They make a tinted sunscreen with iron oxide - great for melasma)

Dermatologic Procedures:
Botox and Fillers
Tightening Procedures - radio frequency, laser, ultrasound and threading

Ep.13 Safety Through Empowerment01 Aug 202200:36:49

Now that things have opened up post-pandemic, we are traveling and out-and-about as we were before, but we need to be more aware and vigilant than ever when it comes to our personal safety.  We have all had situations where we have felt vulnerable or threatened and having the wherewithal to have an escape plan at that moment can be overwhelming.  And what about our children?  Many of us are sending them out into the world to college or perhaps to the city for the first big job.  How do we teach them safety basics?

When Lorna Selig was a young woman, she managed to escape assault twice.  Later as a mother, she participated in a children's safety program, and that is when she had the "lightbulb moment".   Lorna knew this was her calling.  She wanted to become a champion for personal safety and be a steward of empowerment for women and children.  She ended up buying the Safe4Life program and became a successful entrepreneur, speaking to groups and corporations around North America.

In this episode Lorna and I discuss:
-Travel tips
-Living alone or having a partner who travels
-Midlife dating safety
-Out-and-about personal safety
-Protecting our children

Ep.12 A Better Relationship with Alcohol25 Jul 202200:45:13

The Sober Curious Movement is quite evident when you start digging into the internet.  There are apps, self-help social media groups and tons of alcohol free drink options being marketed today.  While the pandemic saw both men and women drinking more, women had a higher increase in heavy drinking than their male counterparts, which has many of us reassessing our own relationship with alcohol.

Jenn Kautsch started taking stock of how alcohol was impacting her life and researching gray area drinking.  She wanted to share her journey with a broader audience and help other sober curious women.  What resulted was the founding of Sober Sis, an all-female support group that is now a 20,000 women-strong network.

Whether you wish to drink less or not at all, Jenn provides the information to help you make informed decisions around your health and life goals.

In this episode Jenn and Michele discuss:

-Jenn's journey and the mental tug-of-war
-Alcohol, connection and intimacy
-Alcohol use disorder and gray area drinking
-The detox to retox loop and surviving "wine o'clock"
-Sober Sis programs and The 21 Day Reset

Ep.11 Your Most Beautiful Eyes18 Jul 202200:35:51

We are generally pretty good about getting to the dentist one to two times per year but what about our vision?  I'd venture a guess that of all the senses we would least like to lose is our sight, yet our eyes don't always get the love they deserve.

Dr. Carly Rose is an expert in midlife eyes, where she has not only built an optometry practice around improving people's precious sight but also the successful treatment of dry eye.  Dry eye disease (DED) is more prevalent as we age and women are more affected than men.  DED should be taken seriously, as it can cause permanent eye damage and even vision loss.

In this episode Dr. Rose and I discuss:

-Dry eye symptoms and the diagnosis
-Treatment  for dry eye - what you can do at home, pharmaceutical options, in-office procedures
-Midlife vision changes and your correction options
-Aesthetic options to improve the look of your peepers

What you can do now for your eye health - lash cleaner, moist heat, completely remove make-up each evening and a good Omega-3 supplement

Ep.106 From Cult to Comedy: Shannon Payton Discovers Strength and Recovery Through Humor27 May 202400:51:38

Our travel through health and wellness on the podcast doesn't end with menopause, diets, and dumbbells; today we venture into the tangled realm of cults with Shannon Payton. Her raw account, as a survivor and thriver, of a youth and adult spent within the restrictive walls of a religious cult, not only educates but also empowers, as she recounts her evolution with a resilience that's both poignant and humorous.

Life inside a religious cult isn't a tale often told with candid laughter and heartfelt revelations, yet this is precisely the narrative Shannon brings to our episode. Through her eyes, we witness the stifling grip of controlling environments and the liberating exodus that reshaped her entire world. Our conversation weaves through her unique childhood experiences, the challenges of forging real friendships post-cult, and the sweet triumph of building a family through adoption, all of which have sculpted a woman who now champions the expansive opportunities she provides for her children.

With each twist and turn of life's journey, Shannon has embraced laughter as her lifeline, a truth that resonated deeply during the isolation of the pandemic. Her spontaneous rise to social media stardom and the creation of a podcast sanctuary for those affected by coercive control have marked her as a beacon of relatability and healing. It's not just about the laughs; it's about the connections, the stories, and the collective healing we experience when we share. Join us for a conversation that promises to touch your heart, tickle your funny bone, and perhaps, inspire your next step forward.

Ep.105 From Confusion to Clarity: A Midlife Tale of Health and Empowerment20 May 202400:34:22

When my midlife health and wellness took a troubling turn in my fifties, I went on my own search to find answers to get my body back and feel good again. My journey sits at the heart of our latest episode, joined by the resilient Stephanie Shaw, who shares her bewildering health crisis. Stephanie's tale is a stark reminder of the crucial role self-advocacy plays, especially when navigating the murky waters of perimenopause and menopause. Together, we peel back the layers of a holistic approach to health that is more than a mere trend—it's a lifeline for many.

Stephanie's experience is a powerful case study in collaborative healthcare's potential, where chiropractors, physical therapists, and nutritionists converge to map out a path to recovery. We also dissect the challenges and victories of weight management in midlife, offering hope and strategies that defy conventional wisdom.

Closing out the episode, we spotlight the launch of "Hello Hot Flash," where a menopause coach is set to demystify the menopause transition for listeners worldwide. I share my personal reflections on stress, anxiety, and the transformative power of self-care routines, with a nod to the diversity in practices that help us find balance. Ep.104 The Art of Midlife Reinvention: New Horizons in Creativity and Energy Management13 May 202400:43:25

Susie deVille, anthropologist and human behavior specialist, is the Founder & CEO of the Innovation & Creativity Institute. She joins me to impart her wisdom on building a 'moat' around yourself to concentrate energy on fresh endeavors and allowing our innate creativity to shine through.

As we move through the seasons of life, creativity often blossoms in the most unexpected places. Susie uncovered her artistic side amidst a period she terms her "nuclear winter," which included battling personal and professional turmoil. The revelation of hidden talents in watercolors and sketching became her sanctuary, leading to an incredible rebirth of joy and creativity. Susie provides us with the framework of her 'five M's' strategy that fueled her recovery, proving that the spark of creativity lies within us all, ready to ignite during life's transitions.

Finally, we address the key to achieving fulfillment through managing our energy. We discuss setting boundaries from the drain of overcommitment by conducting an energy audit. Tune in for a heartfelt conversation filled with strategies and stories that promise to steer and uplift anyone looking to enrich their life with creative energy and purpose.

Ep.103 Rising Above Infidelity and Narcissism: Weighing Your Options & Reclaiming Self 06 May 202400:30:47

As life's complexities unfold, psychologist and coach Lauren Napolitano joins us to dissect the painful yet sometimes transformative nature of infidelity, providing understanding for those navigating these difficult times.

Trust is the cornerstone of any relationship, yet when it's shattered by infidelity, the rebuilding process can resemble a labyrinth of emotional turns. This episode doesn't shy away from the tough conversations, including a gripping account of a woman who chose to face her husband's emotional affair with extraordinary bravery. We discuss the societal shackles and the often solitary aftermath of such revelations, and the imperative role of specialized couples counseling in the journey towards forgiveness and reconnection. The goal is to validate the myriad of experiences and the resilience it takes to either mend the cracks or close the book on a chapter of one's life.

In a world where the term 'narcissism' is thrown around with alarming frequency, we zone in on what it truly means to be entangled with a narcissist and how gaslighting can erode one's sense of self. Tactics for preserving your identity and the importance of establishing boundaries are underscored, without sugarcoating the challenging decision of whether to stay or depart from a relationship.

Ep.102 The Menopause Support Group: A Network of Support, Natural Alternatives and a Thriving Sisterhood29 Apr 202400:31:59

If you think back, even two years ago, the menopause conversation was still really stifled, and worse yet, resources and information were minimal.

Enter our next guests to the podcast. Menopause pioneer, Gwen Harris, saw the need as far back as 2013 with the start of the Menopause Support Group. The organization grew organically to 11,000 members by 2018, and then Tina McDermott, a wellness coach, joined forces with Gwen.

The Menopause Support Group now spans the globe with well over 140,000 members in 120 countries, and out of this Menowave was born, an online, integrated care model for women in menopause.

Early menopause and perimenopause can ambush the unexpecting, leading to a storm of questions and concerns. Gwen and Tina join me in shining a beacon of hope for those navigating these tumultuous waters, detailing how their comprehensive health assessment bridges the gap between confusion and taking action.

Pack your bags for a journey to Sedona, where 'Menopalooza' promises an oasis of self-discovery and sisterhood. These retreats offer members and care providers an opportunity to connect in a more intimate setting. Life-long bonds are made between the attendees through the profound impact of community and support, rewriting the narrative of menopause, one story at a time.

Ep.98 Menopause With a Fresh Perspective: Unwrapping the Humor in Life's Sweatiest Moments01 Apr 202400:22:09

Ever found yourself chuckling because you couldn't remember why you walked into a room or when trading war stories about hot flashes with your friends? Well, you're in for a treat! Join me as I sit down with the ever-delightful Brenda Bowen, who writes under the whimsical pen name Haut Flasch, to discuss her sweet take on menopause in "Goodnight Night Sweats." She partnered with the equally talented illustrator Jessie Hartland, aka Mina Pauze, to bring to life a parody of the favorite children's book, "Goodnight Moon," with a skillful blend of humor and artistry that turns the daunting world of menopause into something we can all giggle about. Brenda's candid storytelling and personal reflections offer both comfort and camaraderie, making this natural transition feel less like an ending and more like the beginning of a new, albeit sweatier, chapter.

Our conversation takes us on a safari through the menopausal experiences of the animal kingdom—yes, even orcas have hot flashes—and back to the human world where Brenda shares the top-reads currently on her nightstand. We don't stop there; we're talking about self-care routines that go beyond the typical spa day, highlighting why a good yoga session or a restorative walk can be just the ticket for clarity and managing stress. So, whether you're looking for a laugh, a good book, or some sage self-care advice, join us!

Ep.89 Winning the Battle Against Midlife Hair Loss - Treatments, Nutrition, and Regenerative Therapies29 Jan 202400:53:12

Have you ever looked in the mirror and noticed your hair isn't quite as full as it used to be? You're not alone. On this episode, we have a heart-to-heart with Dr. Alan Bauman of Bauman Medical, who brings empathy and expertise to the table as we tackle hair loss in midlife, particularly for women. From genetic factors to emotional impacts, we cover the gamut of this surprisingly common yet often unspoken struggle. Dr. Bauman's personal journey from the inception of his "hair hospital" to becoming a beacon of hope for those facing thinning locks is as inspiring as it is informative.

Nutrition isn't just about waistlines; it's integral to our hair's health, too. We chat over the intricacies of hair loss treatments and the role of diet, spotlighting the promise of nutraceuticals like Nutrafol. Dr. Bauman and I debate the pros and cons of prescription treatments, such as the anti-androgen spironolactone and the off-label heroics of finasteride in postmenopausal women. Plus, for all the biotin believers out there, we clear up any dosage dilemmas. Precision tools for tracking treatment progress come under the microscope as well, proving there's more science to hair care than meets the eye.

In the realm of hair restoration, it's not just about what's on top that counts. Dr. Bauman guides us through a tour of cutting-edge therapies that are changing lives, strand by strand. From the gentle glow of red light therapy to the meticulous process of modern hair transplants, we uncover the art behind regrowing confidence. And for those fascinated by the flutter of lush lashes, the soaring demand for eyelash transplants emerges as a surprising trend. Whether it's crafting the perfect eyebrow or rejuvenating a hairline, the transformative power of these procedures extends far beyond the physical. So tune in, and witness the artistry and science that's giving hair care a whole new meaning.

We also discuss PRP and microneedling as options to stimulate hair growth. The Turbo LaserCap is the ultimate powerful, portable, hands-free, cordless, and rechargeable low-level laser therapy device for men and women designed to deliver non-drug laser therapy for hair growth in a convenient and discreet way.

TED uses an ultrasound-based system that uses sound waves and air pressure to enhance the penetration of a powerful topical hair growth formula into the scalp. This combination is designed to increase blood flow, optimize scalp health, and stimulate hair foll

Through our in-depth conversation, you'll gain a wealth of knowledge about how metabolic health intertwines with liver function and the steps you can take to prevent conditions like fatty liver disease. With Dr. Joshi's expert advice at your fingertips, you're empowered to embark on a proactive path toward a healthier liver and a more vibrant life.

CORRECTION:
In the podcast Dr. Joshi accidentally misstated that a can of Coke contains 10 grams of sugar. She meant to say 10 teaspoons of sugar.
Also, she wishes to clarify that two-thirds of North Americans with type two diabetes have fatty liver disease, but one-third of all North Americans have it.

Ep.86 Train With Joan - Inspiring Us to Flex Our Age08 Jan 202400:31:42

According to AARP over 44% of Americans ages 40-59 are considered obese, and for adults over 60 that number is around 42%. Hormone changes can cause fat accumulation, especially in our midsections, and that collides with age-related muscle loss, which means our bodies don't burn calories or process sugar as efficiently.

Then, of course, comes the expected cascade of possible health complications associated with the extra weight. I don't want this to sound bleak, and the purpose in me sharing these statistics is to say that we CAN change the narrative. It is possible, and it is never too late.

When Joan MacDonald received some unwelcome health news from her doctor, she knew that she had to make some changes. With guidance from her fitness guru daughter, Michelle MacDonald, Joan began her own health and fitness journey, in her seventies, to go on to inspire many others to do the same through her Train With Joan platform. Not only are grateful women re-discovering themselves and getting their lives back, but they are becoming a part of a greater community of support and friendship.

Joan has become a major fitness influencer with almost 2 million followers on social media, and she has authored her memoir and self-help book, Flex Your Age: Defy Stereotypes and Reclaim Empowerment. Oh, and did I mention Joan Macdonald was on the cover of Women's Health magazine in 2023? Amazing!

I can't wait for you to meet this 77 year-old dynamo with her amazing can-do spirit!
