In this concluding #HTSportsSeries episode on Heads Talk, we have a fabulous guest and conversation about the football business and sports on the African Continent. My guest is one of those individuals, when given a task, rest assured she will deliver!

Abiola Ijasanmi is the recent Chief Operating Officer for the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the administrative and controlling body for association football, beach soccer, and futsal in Africa. Working with the President, Dr Patrice Motsepé, she was able to implement the vision of making African football globally competitive and self-sustaining. 

Prior to the CAF, Abiola served as the Director of Legal & Compliance for Corporate Affairs and African Operations in the Airport Sector, and worked as a Sports Agent, pioneering representation for Female Athletes. 

With a career partnering with major brands like American Express and VISA, Abiola is a recognised and leading advocate for sports governance, sports tourism; and gender equality in sports administration both in Africa and the UK.

Today on Heads Talk, we are honoured to feature a remarkable and highly respected guest for the #HTSportsSeries. Through my research, I have been impressed by her achievements, especially during a time when women's football was not as popular or welcomed as it is today. She played a pivotal role in elevating the game to its current stature, truly a visionary and deservedly recognised for her 32-year contribution to the game. 

Kelly Simmons OBE, who recently took up the role of FA Director of Women’s Professional Game, has been pivotal in transforming professional women’s football in England. She masterminded the first FA Women’s Professional Game Strategy, which has driven the growth of the Barclays Women’s Super League and Barclays Women’s Championship, culminating in record-breaking sponsorship and media rights deals for women’s football.

Previously, as The FA Director of Development, she oversaw the implementation of a £200 million, four-year investment programme into children’s and grassroots football. Before that, Kelly developed the FA Women’s Talent Development Programme, establishing the England Youth Teams & female centres of excellence.

We continue the #HTAutomotiveSeries on Heads Talk with Dr Dirk Abendroth CEO Customcells. This was yet another insightful conversation. One of Dr. Abendroth's fascination is how one bridges the gap between people and technology. There he introduces Human Engineering into the conversation, so watch out for that in the full episode.
 
What I liked about this episode was the forensic nature of Dr. Abendroth’s answers; and as a result I gained an understanding of Customcells modus operandi. 
 
Dr. Abendroth emphasised the futility of calling a brand premium if recycling solutions were not optimised. Thus, sustainability is at the heart of what they do and collaboration runs through the veins of Customcells. 

Some facts about Dr. Abendroth: Prior to Customsells, he worked in a number of automotive or aviation related companies to include being the Executive Vice President for ByTon, with responsibilities  for powertrain and autonomous driving. He was the CTO of Automotive at Continental and Head of Powertrain BMWi at the BMW Group. 

In his most recent past in July 2021, he joined serial founder Lukasz Gadowski's international technology holding company Team Global as the CTO.

In this week’s #HTAutomotiveSeries 2022 episode of  Heads Talk, I am joined by Evan Van Hook, Chief Sustainability Officer of Honeywell. We talked about the recent press release of the Environmental Sustainability Index. The index is the first quarterly indicator of key trends pertaining to global efforts in climate change mitigation and other sustainability initiatives.

A link to the full findings is in the comments section and the show note. In summary, the key takeaway from the index include: 

• 90% of respondents are generally optimistic about overall success with prior twelve-month goals across sustainability categories including energy evolution and efficiency, emissions reduction, pollution prevention and circularity/recycling.
• Forward-looking perceptions are less confident, with just 67% of respondents being optimistic about achieving goals for the coming twelve months.
• Only 63% are optimistic about achieving their goals by 2030, an anchor deadline year for numerous commitments. It was an interesting conversation and the purpose behind this initiative is to - as Evan explains - get behind the headlines and look at what’s really being done to meet the anchor deadline year of 2030 for ESG targets. 

Some facts about Evan: In 2022 he was named by Constellation Research as one of the world's 50 most influential executives in the field of ESG, and also to the American Energy Society's 500 Global Sustainability Thought Leaders. Prior to Honeywell, Evan was a partner at the law Firm Sidley Austin LLP and the Assistant Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. 

He sits on a number of Boards & has taught International Environmental Law at Columbia Law School, lectured at the United Nations ITR; and was a credentialed observer at the UNFCCC COP 23 and COP 24.

Elaine Pringle, Head of Fleet at Scottish Waters talked about the journey to CO2 neutral vehicles for her organisation's fleet. The conversation centred around procurement and organisational mindset change. We talked about the enormity of the task and Elaine provided some guidance and lessons learned for organisations that are about to embark on this transition. 

It was a lovely conversation getting to know Elaine and understanding her commitment to meeting the net zero target set. 

Full of great insights from Elaine and at the same time a little surreal for the both of us - we have never in our lifetime met another 'Elaine Pringle'.

We continue the new #HTAutomotiveSeries 2022 on Heads Talk with a fascinating conversation and a ‘food for thought’ outcome. This episode is more than what the title suggests. Yes, we discussed the concepts and developments around AVs, but after listening to the recording again, I realised this was an incredible conversation. 

With Florian minderop’s, CVO of MisterGreen insights on Autonomous vehicles and how this will affect the ecosystem around it, it got me thinking of how at least southern European countries will potentially seize this opportunity to source energy from its own shores using land once thought of as only arid and 'barren' yet hot and vast to generate the necessary energy required for a functioning society and beyond. Imagine how that will affect the economy of such countries. Fascinating indeed. 
 
 One of the things that I talked about with Florian was his decision to move from being the CEO of his organisation to being the CVO - Chief Vision Officer. This allowed him time and space for some blue-sky thinking and to hone in on their vision without the daily grind of management.
 
 As ownership of vehicles will be at stake here with the advent and full use of autonomous offerings - Robofleet being one, we looked at some of the impact on the players in this space; in particular the insurance companies and how their business model will have to change. So much information was gathered from this conversation and it allowed me to think about the ecosystem of the future. What a change this industry will undergo.

This is a bonus episode. Just before we kick start the new series fully next week.

Sometimes on Heads Talk  I have a preliminary conversation with guests prior to the official recording. Here is one for you to listen to. You will see that there is a lot more talking than I would usually do in an official recorded episode, but that is to explain  to the guests what I would like to gain from our conversation, understand what they are interested in talking about in terms of the provision of insights; or with some guests it's a 'get to know you conversation' before the recording. Some guest request this, some don't.

This one is with Ed Alford, CTO of New Look. I'm not sure if the official episode could have gone better than this conversation. Ed was great in providing snippets of information and the work they are doing in the technology arm of New Look; as well as hypothesising on what's to come with the increasing use of digital solutions.
