What to Know Before Traveling to Hawaii04 Jan 202300:09:58

There are several things to consider before visiting Hawaii. It is essential to consider your goals for the trip when deciding when to visit, as some activities, such as whale watching, are only available during certain times of the year. It is also important to be prepared to slow down and embrace the culture of Hawaii rather than just checking items off a list. This includes learning some Hawaiian words and phrases. Discover the Best of Oahu: The Ultimate Travel Guide29 Dec 202200:33:03

On this episode of Hawaii’s Best, Bryan talks with the co-founder and CEO of Shaka Guide, Andrew Fowers. Get Episode Show Notes Here:  --> hawaiisbesttravel.com/episode58 <-- The conversation is a comprehensive Oahu travel guide with some history, highlights, and well-informed travel tips.

With Honolulu as the capital, Oahu has over a million locals and the most visitors every year. It’s the perfect combination of epic surfing, beautiful beaches, and rainforest hikes, all within close distance to each other.

Oahu has so much to offer visitors. The main hub is Honolulu and Waikiki, which are very close together. There is a ton of shopping, numerous hotels, and a ton to do.

One spot not everyone knows about is Kaka’ako Chinatown Arts District near downtown Honolulu, which has art murals, new incredible restaurants, and other hidden gems.

If you’re a first-time visitor to Oahu, check out Pearl Harbor Memorial and nearby Aviation Museum, get the Dole Whip at the Dole Plantation, and drive to the North Shore and stop in as many spots as possible - including legendary beaches like Bonsai Pipeline where you’ll probably catch surfers catching waves us regular people can only dream about.

Visit the Polynesian Culture Center and consider viewing their park; they have a luau and night show that you don’t want to miss. Check out Kualoa Ranch where they filmed Jurassic Park, and tour Iolani Palace too.

Make sure to check out Shaka Guide’s Circle Island tour for the best way to get the most out of your trip to Oahu!

How to Care for Hawaii with Daniel Chun of Alaska Airlines08 Jun 202200:29:33

In this episode of Hawaii’s Best, Bryan talks with Daniel Chun from Alaska Airlines. Daniel was born and raised on Oahu and graduated from the University of Hawaii at Mānoa.

Get the show notes here: hawaiisbesttravel.com/episode72

Daniel represents Alaska Airlines as the Director of Sales, Community & Public Relations, Hawaii. His previous experience in the travel and tourism arena includes working at the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, serving as special assistant to Hawaii’s governor-appointed tourism liaison, serving as the executive director of the Honolulu Gay & Lesbian Cultural Foundation, and being part of the Hawaii Tourism Authority Board of Directors.

Today, we hear about Alaska Airlines’ ongoing efforts to help with mālama (nurturing and caring for) Hawaii. Care is a core value of Alaska Airlines, so respecting the states that it serves is a key focus for the company.

Daniel helps Alaska Airlines engage with non-profits and community groups that do local sustainability work in Hawaii. The airline is now partnering with travel2change, a non-profit that connects travelers to volunteer opportunities like cultural education tours and beach clean-ups.

Recently, students on Oahu and Moloka’i created a Pledge describing how they would like travelers to practice mālama while they’re visiting. It’s called Pledge To Our Keiki (which means kids), and the awesome organization Kanu Hawaii soon picked it up and publicized it. They now have a goal to reach 50,000 signatures this year.

Daniel shares how ongoing efforts like this spread the word about respecting the land and help more and more travelers practice mālama.

How to Volunteer in Hawaii During Your Vacation - Maui Cultural Lands28 Apr 202200:52:49

Get Episode Show Notes Here:  --> hawaiisbesttravel.com/episode70 <--

On this episode of Hawaii’s Best, Bryan is joined by Edwin “Ekolu” Lyndsey, the president of Maui Cultural Lands.

This non-profit was founded by his parents in 1999 to boost conservationist efforts on the island of Maui, and specifically to bring continued restoration and protection to Honokowai Valley. Their mission includes telling the stories of the spaces they fight to preserve through education and healthy exploration.

Honokowai Valley’s name reflects its natural resources (sugar cane and water). It was historically a very rich agricultural area, supplying not just sugar but other foods for many of the surrounding communities. There are buildings on the land that date back to 1200 AD.

Currently, reforestation efforts and ecological preservation work are establishing sustainability in the area to ensure the important historic valley thrives for generations to come.

Ekolu’s team takes volunteers up every Saturday to work on the land, learn some of the cultural values and history, and share Aloha. We know you’ll be inspired by his truly Hawaiian, chill but deep passion as he explains Regenerative Tourism, and how we can all participate in better stewardship of an island so rich in beauty and natural glory - an island that also sustains around 3 million visitors a year.

Giving back while on vacation with Maui Cultural Lands is one tangible on how you and your family can volunteer in Hawaii.

The team teaches its volunteers an important concept that Ekolu’s family calls the “process of Aloha.” This includes Kupono (honesty, forthrightness and fairness in relating to others), Malama (generating light and caring for life), and Kokua (to help selflessly), which Ekolu explains to us in the most stirring of ways.

As a Maui native, Ekolu has inherited wisdom, generosity, and wonder from his family, and his explanation of Aloha as a practice and a process, as opposed to just a concept, is one of the many gems in this rich conversation.

In 2019, Edwin received a prestigious honor from Maui County’s mayor (Michael Victorino): he had a day of the year named Edwin “Ekolu” Lyndsey Day! The mayor thanked Ekolu for empowering the community to protect its resources.

Ekolu also does work to restore local reefs, invites students from abroad to learn conservation methods on site, and partners with other Maui-based non-profits in their water and land protection efforts.

Bryan and Ekolu also talk through the pro’s and con’s of the bounce-back in travelers and tourists after the pandemic, and what some of the pressure points are as visitors return in such high numbers. These include the increased danger that overcrowding poses to the reefs, seals, and water supplies.

The History of King Kamehameha Day in Hawaii11 Jun 202100:07:11

Get Episode Show Notes Here:  --> hawaiisbesttravel.com/episode66 <--
Hawaii is one of incredible culture and rich history. The history and culture of these Polynesian islands are often highlighted through public holidays that celebrate the phenomenal traditions of Hawaii.

One such holiday, celebrated annually on June 11th, honors the first monarch who established the Kingdom of Hawaii, Kamehameha the Great. The holiday is celebrated across the eight major Hawaiian islands of Hawaii: O'ahu, Maui, Ni'ihau, Kaua'i, Moloka'i, Lāna'i, Kaho'olawe, and Hawai'i Island.

What is King Kamehameha Day?

After uniting the islands, Kamehameha the Great became the first King of Hawaii and this day is a celebration and memorial of him. King Kamehameha Day is a beautiful celebration of not only Kamehameha the Great but also, the protection and preservation of the Hawaiian culture. Celebrated in a festival style, King Kamehameha Day is enjoyed by thousands of Hawaiian locals and tourists on June 11th every year. The festival celebration features traditional Hawaiian song, dance, and chats along with delicious food, arts, and crafts.

The History of King Kamehameha Day

After years of strife and conflict across what is now known as the Hawaiian islands, Kamehameha the Great united the islands into one kingdom in 1810. He became the first King of Hawaii and was known as a wise diplomat, fierce warrior, and was highly respected as a leader. Sixty-one years later, King Kamehameha V, his great-grandson, declared by royal decree that June 11th would be King Kamehameha Day in honor of his memory.

The day was also implemented as a replacement for Hawaiian Sovereignty Restoration Day that took place on July 31st, a holiday King Kamehameha V disapproved of due to association with the Paulet affair. The first celebration took place on June 11th, 1872 and the early festivities were celebrated through grand carnivals.

During the years of 1893 and 1898, celebrations fell to the wayside after the overthrow of Hawaii but the day continued to be recognized and was re-established when Hawaii became a United States territory in 1898. The celebration has been an annual event ever since and was one of the first public holidays proclaimed on Hawaii State Legislature when the islands entered statehood in 1959.

Top 5 Kid Friendly Hikes on Oahu03 Jun 202100:20:20

Get Episode Show Notes Here:  --> hawaiisbesttravel.com/episode64 <--

What to Know Before Hiking in Oahu

  • Go Early: Oahu’s hiking trails can be busy, hot, and tough to find parking for
  • Call Ahead: Find out weather and trail conditions before heading out with your family
  • Be Prepared: Check the clothing and packing lists below to have a safe, comfortable outing
  • Protect Belongings: Don’t leave valuables in your car and have a backpack that is comfortable and secure while hiking
  • Follow Rules: Stay on the trail, and avoid taking risks for photo ops or thrill-seeking
  • Leave No Trace: Stow trash in backpacks, plan restroom trips and leave the trail better than you found it
  • KNOW YOUR LIMITS: That includes your family. Though these hikes are some of the more "family-friendly" hikes on Oahu, they can still be challenging and require physical endurance. Please, know your limits.

1. Waimea Falls

Located on the North Shore of Oahu, this all-ages trail takes you through lush gardens and historical sites before revealing a spectacular 30-ft waterfall and swimming area. The entirely paved trail is perfect for strollers, and its gradual slope, numerous benches, and shuttle service allow for rest and snack breaks. Owned by a Native Hawaiian governing entity, the valley is steeped in history. Featuring cultural presentations and displays from local artisans during the day. And when you reach the waterfall, lifeguards and life jackets make swimming safe for kids and adults alike.

2. Manoa Falls Trail

Another waterfall hike awaits outside Honolulu, where Manoa Falls offers a more rugged journey through shaded rainforest terrain. Beginning with breathtaking views of the Manoa Valley, the 1.7-mile unpaved trail passes through bamboo groves and diverse vegetation, including the Lyon Arboretum, home to over 5,000 plant species. You’ll want sturdy shoes or boots, and consider hiking poles - rainfall can make the path slippery in spots - and baby carriers are recommended! The shade and wet, humid air attract mosquitos, so repellant spray or wipes also come in handy. Know your limits. This is an easier hike, good for families with older kids, but can be very wet and slippery. If in doubt, don't go out.

Maui Travel Guide05 May 202100:35:40

On this episode of Hawaii’s Best, Bryan catches up with co-founder and CEO of Shaka Guide, Andrew Fowers, and this time it’s all about Maui. Get Episode Show Notes Here:  --> hawaiisbesttravel.com/episode61 <-- Andrew gives us a comprehensive Maui travel guide along with some interesting history, and well-informed tips for visitors.

Maui is the second-largest Hawaiian island, and it's nicknamed the “Valley Isle” because it has a large isthmus separating its northwestern and southeastern volcanic masses.

West Maui contains resort areas like Kaanapali, Kapalua, and Lahaina. You can see a lot of whales from all of the beautiful beaches from November - March-ish.

Upcountry is wetter and greener than West Maui. You can tour Protea Gardens, Kula Country Farms, or the Maui winery where you can taste pineapple wine. Andrew highly recommends checking out the Kula Botanical Garden.

Up the mountain, you’ll find Haleakala - you can drive up some switchbacks and view some amazing spots of the crater and the whole valley. The crater is about the size of Manhattan Island, and in the Shaka Guide Tour Andrew recommends a few specific viewpoints along the drive. The legend of Haleakala is that this is where the demigod Maui lassoed the sun. (If you visit during sunrise hours, make sure you make a reservation with the National Park).

The eastern side is most famous for the road to Hana, a skinny highway with lots of bridges and amazing views. People like to check out Twin Falls, Black Sand Beach (which requires a reservation), and of course Hana Town. Past Hana Town, you can find the Seven Sacred Falls.

Make sure to check out Shaka Guide’s Circle Island tour for the best way to get the most out of your trip to Maui!

What is Lei Day in Hawaii?30 Apr 202100:11:58

On this episode of Hawaii’s Best, Bryan talks with good friend of the pod and (unofficial) Cultural Practitioner for Hawaii's Best, Kahanuola Solatorio  --> hawaiisbesttravel.com/episode60 <-- about the importance of Lei Day in Hawaii. We even hear about his band Keauhou, which plays at the holiday every year, and who you can watch remotely this year!

Lei Day happens on the 1st of May every year, lasting until the next day. It has existed as a holiday since the late 1920s when American Poet Don Blanding wrote a newspaper article stating that the production and wearing of leis is culturally significant and needs a holiday dedicated to it.

Depending on the occasion, a lei can be given as a greeting, a goodbye, a thank-you, or an expression of love. Each island of Hawaii has its own flower that represents that island, so you’ll see a different color scheme and emphasis in the craft of the leis depending on where you are.

The tradition of a live concert on Lei Day was first established by the well-known Hawaiian musical act, The Brothers Cazimero. Years after, they passed the honor to Keauhou, the band Kanhanuola plays in, who has been playing at the event for the past three years.

You can participate virtually in the festivities this year as well, by checking out the online event at 7 pm (Hawaiian time) on Facebook live at Facebook.com/HawaiiNewsNow - don’t forget to wear a lei, and give one to someone you love!

The True Meaning of Aloha28 Apr 202100:28:13

Do you know the true meaning of the word Aloha? Get Episode Show Notes Here:  --> hawaiisbesttravel.com/episode59 <-- Its rich history and context elude many travelers, but on today’s important episode of Hawaii’s Best, Kahanuola Solatorio (who you may remember from episode 53) sits down with Bryan to explain the essence of the word, and spirit, known as Aloha.

Kahanuola and Bryan discuss the results of their Instagram poll, where people submitted that “Aloha” means, peace, home, kindness, respect, gratitude, compassion, and many more. Kahanuola explains that it’s a mindset that encompasses all those and more.

Aloha is a way of life that locals in Hawaii grow up learning and seeing modeled. It includes kindness to strangers, respecting everyone and honoring others. There’s reciprocity implied in the concept - the way it’s supposed to operate is ideally giving and getting this same attitude.

So many Hawaiian locals desire to teach and spread this concept and feel deeply that it’s key to building the shared love among humanity that society desperately needs more of right now.

There are several things we can remember about the spirit of aloha: Remember to show grace and patience to others AND yourself. Reciprocate honor and respect, making sure you’re a giver and not just a taker. Also, respect and care for the land, and keep it beautiful. It has given so much aloha to so many people, it’s right to show that same love back.

If you’re traveling to Hawaii and someone says “aloha” to you, feel free to go ahead and say it back! They’re expecting to hear it, and are used to it. Don’t be shy about it.

It was great to talk about practicing this mindfulness with others and with the land and thinking of ourselves in light of how we’re affecting the world around us.

Oahu Travel Guide21 Apr 202100:31:09

Hawaii Vaccine Passport Program14 Apr 202100:19:24

On this episode of Hawaii’s Best, Bryan updates us on the latest news about traveling to Hawaii during 2021. Get Episode Show Notes Here:  --> hawaiisbesttravel.com/episode57 <--
We’ll learn about the new vaccination passports and how they’ll potentially play into your upcoming trip.

On a recent trip to Oahu, Bryan and Ali observed that many restaurants and places that survived the pandemic's economic hit are open again, but observed a certain amount of tension as the island tries to navigate getting back into more activity and tourism.

Get Episode Show Notes Here:  --> hawaiisbesttravel.com/episode57 <--

Hawaii’s Safe Travel program launched in October of 2020. Part of the requirement is to get a negative test result from a DOH-approved testing site within 72 hours of the departure's final leg, and some islands require a second test upon arrival as well.

In addition, on April 9, 2021, the Governor of Hawaii, David Ige, announced that a vaccine passport would be added to the program. It could roll out as early as May for inter-island travel and potentially in the summer for trans-pacific travel from the mainland.

People will be able to provide proof of vaccination soon to avoid the need to get the test before traveling (and after landing in some locations). Travelers can qualify for this status two weeks after their vaccination is completed. Keiki under 5 doesn’t need to test or show proof of vaccination.

Unvaccinated travelers can still go the test route; the vaccine passport isn’t required to go to Hawaii. The White House ruled out the possibility of a federal mandate for the vaccine but is working out ways to streamline the topic and collect data in specific ways.

The Hawaii Tourism Association president expressed eagerness to get the economy of Hawaii moving at a better pace again in a safe manner. Hawaii has very low COVID infection rates, and everyone wants to keep it that way as more and more people desire to visit Hawaii soon.

Island of Hawaii Pono Pledge07 Apr 202100:40:00

On this episode, Bryan sits down with Frecia Cevallos and Lauren Manuel from Hawai’i Island’s Pono Pledge Initiative. Get Episode Show Notes Here:  --> hawaiisbesttravel.com/episode56 <--

Frecia is a tourism specialist who has a huge passion for helping Hawaii thrive by promoting healthy communities, maintaining strong culture, and protecting natural resources. Lauren is vice president of sales for a destination management company and helps people experience the islands fully, with a special place in her heart for Hawai'i Island.

With travel continuing to open back up from the mainland, to Hawaii (with safe travel protocols in place of course), so many people are excited to travel, and places like Hawai’i Island are catching soon-to-be visitor's attention. It has every climate on it from snow to hot sunny beaches to black lava rock. So, the desire to visit is at a significant high!

The Pono Pledge was created to keep local residents and visitors alike safe with their guidelines, forethought, and care.

Pono means righteous and morally correct. It encompasses the idea of being mindful of how you’d want someone to be treated and treating others that way. It relates to respecting the island’s hospitality and having awareness of the environment and culture around you. This helps ensure the safety and longevity of the people that live there, as well as the visitors.

On this episode, we learn why not every activity you see on social media is a good idea to try while visiting; you don’t want to trespass on private property, get a citation from trying an illegal hike, or be caught in a flash flood. So, part of the Pono Pledge is committing to practicing wisdom while you’re in a less unfamiliar place.

It’s amazing how much love people that call Hawai’i Island have for the land. The Pono Pledge isn’t just some list of “don’t”s - it’s a guide to taking care of a place that we want to be able to bring our children and grandchildren for years to come. As it says, we surely can seek wonder without wandering somewhere we don’t belong.

What if we treated our vacations the same way? Hawaii is a beautiful force of nature that is fully appreciated when we respect and preserve its beauty for our hosts and fellow guests. In today’s episode, Bryan chats with Andrew Fowers, CEO of Shaka Guide, as they share 4 ways to travel responsibly to Hawaii!

Responsible Travel To Hawaii

This episode gives you insight on having a great time in Hawaii while leaving a positive impact. The 4 points discussed include:

Safety: You’re finally on vacation, and it’s tempting to go anywhere and do anything you want - but educating yourself about Hawaii before and during your stay is the safer - and more rewarding - option.

Conservation: The local wildlife is one of Hawaii’s biggest draws, and there are simple steps you can take to protect the flora and fauna for future generations to enjoy.

Respect: From cleaning off your shoes while island-hopping to knowing where to park while hiking, learn the meaning behind Malama ‘Aina, and its desire to honor Hawaii’s land and people.

Giving Back: Hear about the growing opportunities of voluntourism in Hawaii, and how you can support the local communities as a humble, helpful guest.

Today’s Guest

Andrew Fowers is the CEO of Shaka Guide, a GPS-guided app that leads travelers to Hawaii’s best destinations and stories - providing what to know and where to go. A graduate of BYU Hawaii’s School of Business and Accounting, Andrew sees Hawaii as the perfect launchpad for Shaka Guide, owing to the islands’ beauty, rich history, and culture.

Hawaiian Airlines New Routes with VP of Airport Operations Jeff Helfrick25 Mar 202100:16:37

When was the last time you visited a place for its welcoming ambiance and genuine hospitality of its people? Get Episode Show Notes Here:  --> hawaiisbesttravel.com/episode54 <--

A tropical island paradise, Hawaii is not limited to its dramatic coastlines and coral reefs alone. To think that the place makes you feel at home for its warm aloha and mouth-watering food is all the more compelling!

Hawaiian Airlines have been a lifeline for people who regularly connect between Hawaii and the islands for essential services and work-related travel. At a time when the pandemic would have rendered life hard for many, they stood out for their exceptional service and hospitality.

Listen in to this episode of Hawaii's Best as Bryan speaks with Jeff Helfrick, VP of Operations at Hawaiian Airlines, about their services during and after COVID and how the pandemic has affected its place and people. Jeff walks us through some essential information we need to keep in mind while planning a journey to the islands.

In this episode, we are reminded that although travel to Hawaii has reopened, the pandemic is not over yet. Please do not compromise on the pandemic rules of wearing a mask and practicing social distancing. Upon arrival in Hawaii, follow all the rules and regulations put forward by the authorities to keep the disease under control.

To experience the beautiful reset that the place has undergone during the virus, plan on spending time around quiet and refreshing areas. Soak in the beauty of Hawaii, for now, is when we don't have a lot of people visiting the islands.

If you're pumped up for a fantastic time in Hawaii any time soon, make sure you opt for the outstanding services provided by Hawaiian Airlines. They have partnered with the State of Hawaii and use the same technology as they do.

This means that you won't have to queue up when you land to have your QR code scanned. Hawaiian Airlines will pre-clear you and you won't have to wait at the airport.

Upload all your information to Safe Travels; this includes your negative COVID tests from a trusted travel partner. Once you have it done, you'll find yourself on the beach within moments!

Listen in to Hawaii's Best for valuable insights on safe travels to Hawaii!

Legend of Pele, Hawaiian Goddess of Fire and Volcanoes03 Mar 202100:30:30

How many stories of the Hawaiian Islands have you heard? If you are a culture lover, you may be curious to know what makes Hawaiian culture so rich. --> hawaiisbesttravel.com/episode51 <--

In this episode, Bryan is joined with Andrew Fowers of Shaka Guide to discuss three important stories of goddess Pele.

Pele, also known as the goddess of fire, can be quick to anger and a jealous lover. In the three stories, we are about to hear, it’s hard to ignore Pele’s anger. A silver lining about Pele is that she has a conscience, too.

In the first story of how the Kilauea volcano came to be, Pele got jealous of her little sister Hiiaka. Pele sent her sister to find her lover Ohia and bring him to her. Pele gave Hiiaka a deadline of 40 days. Hiiaka failed to meet the deadline. She came back after the deadline had elapsed, but she brought Ohia with her. Pele’s angry got the best of her and destroyed Hiika’s forest. When Hiiaka saw that, she too got angry and embraced Ohia in Pele’s presence. Pele got upset and buried Ohia beneath rapid hot lava.

--> hawaiisbesttravel.com/episode51 <--

The second story is about the curse of Pele. According to Hawaiian culture, what belongs to Pele must remain in Hawaii. Many people who visit Hawaii usually get tempted to take away lava rocks or sand as souvenirs. Unfortunately, many of them end up mailing them back because of the many bad things they encounter. Could it be the curse of Pele?

The third story is about the relationship between Pele and the Ohia Lehua tree. This story is evidence enough that Pele is not always bad. When lava erupts, it is usually black and barren. Amazing enough, there is one tree that can withstand that, the Ohia Lehua tree.

This tree is said to close its leaves and pore for it to survive the harsh conditions. The Ohia Lehua tree has beautiful red flowers that some native Hawaiian birds feed on. It is believed that after Pele calmed down, she turned Ohia’s body into the tree and Lehau’s body into its flowers. She did that to join the lovers together forever.
