126 - James “JY” Young (Styx) In episode 126 of “Have Guitar Will Travel”, presented by Vintage Guitar Magazine host James Patrick Regan speaks with guitarist James “JY” Young from the band Styx. In their conversation they discuss the current tour with Foreigner and John Waite, and how James fills out his off time when they’re not at the venue. James takes us through his start on guitar and his love of Bo Diddley (who’s daughter James is friends with) Jimi Hendrix (whom James saw 5 times) and Eric Clapton (who he studied by slowing the lp’s to half speed). James tells us about his college years studying aerospace and working for his father’s construction company. James describes how he met Dennis DeYoung and the guys in Dennis’s cover band and how that band became Styx, how they got signed by A&M. They discuss gear through the years . In episode 125 of “Have Guitar Will Travel”, presented by Vintage Guitar Magazine host James Patrick Regan speaks with guitarist extraordinaire J.D. Simo, they spoke at the Uptown Theatre in Napa, CA where J.D. was supporting Tab Benoit and Anders Osborne. In their conversation J.D. tells us about his current tour and his main Telecaster he got from Dan Strain at Danocaster Guitars as well as his amp a Headstrong Lil King. J.D. discusses growing up in Chicago and what a great influence the radio station WXRT had on him as well as the Blues Brothers movie and seeing Elvis on TV. J.D. walks us through his playing in bands while he was real young including a Cumbia band in Arizona and how his friendship with Zac Childs led him to moving to Nashville. J.D. tells us about being a session guitarist in Nashville and how he ended up joining the Don Kelley band at Robert’s Western World on Lower Broadway. J.D. talks us through his work as a producer and some of his other projects he’s worked on: Phil Lesh, the Allman’s and the Elvis biopic with Dave Cobb and J.D. talks as well about a new project with Dave Cobb a biopic for Disney+ on Bruce Springsteen. J.D takes us through his woodshedding practices and his home studio as well as his gear, guitars and amps . In episode 116 of “Have Guitar Will Travel”, presented by Vintage Guitar Magazine, host James Patrick Regan speaks with guitarist and singer (and multi instrumentalist) Gunnar Nelson. With his twin brother Matthew they perform as Nelson (the band from the ‘80’s) and they are the sons of the late Ricky Nelson. In their conversation they cover: Moving from LA to Nashville 23 years ago… making him a Nashville local and the benefits of living in Nashville. They talk about Gunnar’s role in Nelson, as the principal songwriter and the guy who does the heavy lifting in the band. They discuss the three Nelson records they have in the can and how they’re going to go about releasing that material. Gunnar takes us through the iterations of the band, they’re solo acoustic show, the band Nelson, Ricky Nelson Remembered and others. They dive deep into Gunnar’s guitars and his relationship with the Telecaster, Grover Jackson and Uncle Norm from Norman’s Rare Guitars. They also discuss his dad’s gear and the guitars that got away mostly to finance a Bradshaw rig.
