S03 - Flash Fiction 04 - The Cats are Crying by Matt Havenhand23 Sep 202600:14:25

S03 - Episode 05 - Death Toll Part 2 by Mark Robinson18 Sep 202600:42:10

“It was only when he glanced at the waiting cars that Kian noticed something wasn’t right. Apart from the van’s juddering engine, none of the other cars were idling. There was no exhaust smoke tailing in the air. No sound of radios or movement. No drivers on their feet moaning…”

This is Haunted UK Fiction, a sister podcast to Haunted UK featuring original stories of the supernatural, the monstrous, and the unknown. In today’s episode, we present Death Toll (PT1), a wild and terrifying tale written by Mark Robinson.

27 by Alis Griffiths

Grandpa’s Clock by Jed Vesper

About the Author:

Hailing from the UK, Mark Robinson writes horror, crime and speculative thrillers and hosts the Behind the Screams indie writer Q&A on Substack. With over thirty short stories published and five novellas slowly going out of print, Mark’s most recent work is Doll Parts, released in early 2026 from RDG Books Press.

The inspiration for Death Toll came to Mark whilst sitting by the pool on holiday, having just drove through the M6 Toll plaza in the early hours on the way to the airport and thinking how spooky the place was. He wanted to do something with ghosts, urban legends and the classic slasher trope, and the setting of a Toll plaza at night seemed to bring all those ideas together.

S03 - EP02 - A Little Ghost Story by Iain Travers | A ghostly journey19 Aug 202600:48:31

“It was at a precarious, slightly vulnerable time, that I began to have experiences, which led to meeting a ghost. I realised with a modicum of alarm, that as I reached out for possibilities beyond death, something from death also reached back to me.”

This is Haunted UK Fiction, original stories of the supernatural, the monstrous, and the unknown.

In this episode we read A Little Ghost Story by Iain Travers, a tale that blends a ghost story with a personal journey...

If you enjoyed this story, continue your listening with:

Sukie in the Graveyard by Robert McDermott

Mother Never Liked Dead Things by S.C. Fisher

Rattle Chains by Ellen Forkin

About the Author:

Iain is a retired mental health social worker from Hammersmith, London who worked exclusively in central London, with people with a variety of mental health, behavioural or addiction problems. Such close contact with alternate life views and experiences has been a strong influence on his writing, while the desire for a change of public perception of differences has been a strong motivator to help convey these ideas. After retirement, Iain moved to Wiltshire and now works as a personal assistant to a family of four narcissistic cats. He started writing stories about 15 years ago, tending to favour dark fiction and horror. He also drifts to a few wry and slightly twisted children's stories. Several of his short stories have been published in magazines, and he hopes to find a wider audience - Or at least one that is more receptive than his cats.

Echoes in the Mist by Michele Liddle for an atmospheric, ancient feeling story

One Always Comes Back by Robert McDermott for another tale tied to legends and lore

About the Author:

Harrie is, in her words, finally getting her act together and actually writing some stories, instead of just daydreaming about writing some stories.

She loves the look of stained glass, thinks fancy rats are extremely underrated as pets and, because this is a Christmas-themed episode, would like to share that her current advent calendar record is 15. Maybe one day she'll reach those dizzying heights again.

She hopes you enjoy listening to this episode and encourages you to support your nearest Christmas Tractor Run. You get to look at pretty lights, help support great causes, and don't worry, it probably won't be haunted. Probably.

S02 - EP18 - Windy Ridge by Anne Marie Whittaker | A time slip tale27 May 202600:46:07
“I rounded the hillock. It did not conceal a tumbledown wall. Instead, to my utter amazement, I beheld a neat littlebungalow standing behind a trim lawn. It was sheltered below a high ridge in the land behind, and between the two acrescent of tall poplars embraced it to offer further protection from the elements. I was astonished – I could hardly havebeen more so if the little house been made out of gingerbread and Hansel and Gretel had been playing on the lawn. There was a low drystone wall around the garden, and a wooden gate set into it bore the name “Cefn Gwyntog”. Well-tended flower beds bordered the path leading to the front door, which was flanked by pots of pelargoniums. Tomatoeswere ripening in a small greenhouse and snowy white vests and bloomers hung from a washing line, but weremotionless - there was still no wind, and I could no longer hear the birds…”

Hello and welcome, dear listeners, to Haunted UK Fiction – a sister podcast to The Haunted UK which features original flash fiction, short stories, and novellas with paranormal themes. All stories you will hear were written by a collection of talented writers, authors, and storytellers, both independent and professional. In today’s episode we’ll be reading Windy Ridge which was sent in to us by Anne Marie Whittaker. Anne Marie Whittaker is originally from Lancashire but has lived in South Wales for many years. She’s always enjoyed reading and writing, as well as art and crafts – and was a graphic designer back in the day. Retired now, she loves the freedom it gives her to do the creative things she actually wants to do!  Her inspiration for Windy Ridge came from a house she saw while out walking a couple of years ago. It fascinated her because its garden was cared for but the curtains at the windows were, quite literally, rags. She later learned the very sad, human story behind the condition of the house, which wasn’t related to us so as not to upset anyone who might recognize it. She was out on a walk not long after having had a knee replacement; she hadn’t been able to walk much for some time, which prodded her into writing more, and into doing more art and craft, like the narrator in the story. Like the character, she began to listen to podcasts about the ghostly and the paranormal while occupied thus at the kitchen table. She loved both real life accounts and fiction, and began to notice the structure in stories, what she found powerful in them, and tried to use this in Windy Ridge.

Anne Marie’s influences are, in her own words, Anything and anything! She has always read a lot, and feels MR James is a master of the genre - Casting the Runes being her favourite. In recent years she has discovered Robert Aikman, whose stories are not strictly ghost stories but are seriously disturbing. Since she began listening to ghost story podcasts, her favourite short story has been The Crown Derby Plate by Marjorie Bowen. It is beautifully written and there is some levity in it which sets off the ghostly side of things very well.

We truly hope you this time slip tale by Anne Marie Whittaker. Keep an eye in upcoming seasons as we have more of Anne Marie’s work to share with you.

If you have an original story that would send a chill down our spines, and you would like to submit it for review, simply send it in to hauntedukfiction@hotmail.com

Until next time, stay safe, and take care.

Flash Fiction - The Last Ghost Hunters by Liah Thorley | The hunters being hunted22 May 202600:09:58
Not all ghost hunts are what they seem...

“My companions listen to our guide as she fills us with tantalising fear. Stories of murder and suicide, bodies dismembered or swinging from ropes drip from her scarlet lips with gregarious enthusiasm. She is captivating and vivacious in a dirty kind of way. She flicks her dusty blond hair over her shoulder, and her blue eyes dart a glance towards me. For a split second, she hesitates. Her lips curl slightly and then part as she begins her next story.…”

What begins as an evening of entertainment, tales of hauntings, murder, and restless spirits, slowly takes on a different tone as something beneath the performance begins to surface. Some stories are told for effect, others serve a very different purpose. This original paranormal horror story explores perception, performance, and the unsettling feeling that you may not be the one doing the observing.

Flash Fiction Friday – a bite-sized tale with a sting in the tail.

S02 - EP17 - The Mosses Part 2 by LD Brown | The conclusion of this strange adventure20 May 202600:33:45
The conclusion of this eerie, atmospheric story...

“She lowered her voice, almost to a whisper and glanced to and fro as if cautious of her surroundings. “I think, perhaps, that you might not be able to endure the experience.” Initially, I thought that this little put down of hers was typical of her character; it was both something of a good-natured tease and a defensive stance against what she regarded as my rigid scepticism. It is only now, as I relate these events so many years later, that there was no veiled meaning in those words of hers.  It was simply a warning…”

What began as curiosity now gives way to consequence, as the true nature of The Mosses reveals itself: Slow, inescapable, and far older than those who wander into it. This original paranormal folk horror story explores consequence, inevitability, and the quiet terror of realizing the warning was real.

If you enjoy this story, continue your listening with:
The Mosses – Part 1 (return to where the journey began)

S02 - EP16 - The Mosses Part 1 by LD Brown | A strange story of experimentation13 May 202600:33:53
Beneath the still waters of The Mosses, something ancient waits... This is part 1 of a 2-part episode.

“These marshes and bogs beheld a great abundance of streams which criss-crossed the rough grass in huge spider-web formations. These streams grew, split, thickened and slowed so very gradually until, at the very heart of the marsh, all gentle trickling ceased and great pools of brown water stood silent and deep. I had been informed that these areas were known as “The Mosses,” and it would be most unwise to leave the path and explore them…”

Deep within the wetlands known as The Mosses, the land itself begins to change, something ancient seems to watch from beneath the still, dark water. Not all danger announces itself, some ancient forms of it simply wait. This original paranormal folk horror story explores isolation, landscape, and the quiet terror of stepping somewhere you were never meant to go.

If you enjoy this story, continue your listening with:
The Mosses – Part 2 (continue the story as the true horror of the marsh begins to reveal itself)
The Overcoat (another unsettling tale by the same author, steeped in atmosphere and creeping dread)
Blackdamp (a claustrophobic story where the environment itself becomes deadly)

S02 - EP15 - Folded In by Willerby | A twisted tale of mystery and danger06 May 202600:28:17
A house that doesn’t behave. A space that won’t stay still. What if reality has rules… and this Willerby house breaks them?

"Mauve went round the house with Caitlin pulling down every blind, closing every curtain and turning off every light. “Where we’re going don’t fit with the shape of this world we’re used to,” she said, “and seeing things in it will mislead us. What looks, I don’t know, like a chair two feet way don’t mean in the places we are trying to get to there’s a chair two feet away. It could be a mile away. It might not be a chair…”

What begins as a strange set of instructions quickly becomes something far more disorienting, as familiar space begins to twist, stretch, and collapse into something unknowable.Distances shift. Objects deceive. And once you step inside, the world you understand may no longer apply. This original paranormal horror story explores altered dimensions, perception, and the terrifying idea of slipping into a place that doesn’t follow the rules of reality.

If you enjoy this story, continue your listening with:\
Shortcuts (another unsettling tale from Willerby, where a simple path leads somewhere it shouldn’t)
Spores (a deeply unsettling story where something begins to spread beyond control)
The Thing in the Wall (a nightmare where reality begins to break and something crosses through)

About the Story
Folded In comes from the mysterious town of Willerby — a place that seems to exist slightly out of step with the rest of the world. These stories were discovered during the early planning stages of Haunted UK Fiction, on a website documenting the town and its inhabitants. The identity of those behind it remains unknown, but permission was granted to share these accounts under a number of unusual conditions.

S02 - EP14 - The Last Passenger by Iain Maynard | A daily commute turns to terror29 Apr 202600:51:27
A late-night train. A silent passenger. Some journeys shouldn’t be taken alone.

“A faint suggestion of an arm could be made out from the folds and depressions in the blanket. Stranger still, Jake ascertained by its stance and posture that the figure was facing the wall, its nose all but touching it. As he looked at this shrouded figure the train had begun to move and leave the station. A few seconds into its movement, the car suddenly jolted, as though it had lost all power, the lights in the car also flickering out for a couple of seconds…”

What begins as an ordinary journey quickly turns into something far more unsettling, as one passenger notices something that doesn’t belong, and can’t be ignored. In a place designed to move people from one stop to the next, something else may quietly remain on board. This original paranormal horror story explores isolation, confined spaces, and the quiet terror of being trapped with something you don’t understand.

If you enjoy this story, continue your listening with:
HMP Signal’s End (a claustrophobic and tension-filled tale where something refuses to stay contained)
Blackdamp (a suffocating underground horror where unseen danger proves deadly)
The Swaying Woman of Skelton Wharf (a haunting encounter where a single moment lingers long after it should)

About the Author
Iain Maynard is a lifelong fan of the paranormal, with a passion for horror across books, film, television, and theatre. Drawing inspiration from real locations and lived experience, his work brings the uncanny into familiar, everyday settings.

S02 - EP13 - NHS Gothic by John Wharton | A collection of hospital hauntings22 Apr 202601:09:19
A hospital at night. Empty corridors. The sense of something that shouldn't be there.

“It was 02:17. That hour again — the one that stretched too long, when the lights hummed and even the air seemed to wait... she felt wrong. Off balance. Watched. The panel glowed red: ROOM SIX. The door was ajar. She was certain she’d closed it... A shape stood inside, pale against the dim light... She pushed the door open. Empty.”

In this special collection, a series of interconnected tales unfold within the sterile, familiar world of the medical field, where routine meets the unexplained, and the night shift reveals what daylight keeps hidden. Doors open when they shouldn’t, rooms aren’t as empty as they appear, and something always seems to be watching. NHS Gothic is a collection of paranormal horror stories exploring unease, isolation, and the quiet terror of places built to preserve life…

If you enjoy this episode, continue your listening with:
Blackdamp (a tense and claustrophobic tale where unseen forces prove deadly)
It Shows Up When It’s Needed (a haunting story where presence emerges at moments of vulnerability)
The Thing in the Wall (a nightmare that crosses into reality, where something shouldn’t exist)

About the Author
John Wharton writes atmospheric horror grounded in familiar, real-world environments — bringing the supernatural into places we trust. NHS Gothic blends everyday routine with creeping unease, where the ordinary becomes something far more disturbing.

S02 - EP10 - The Thing in the Wall by Alec Rowan | A childhood nightmare come to life01 Apr 202600:14:44
Not all nightmares are born of pure imagination...

“Tim’s breath caught. He pushed himself upright, heart hammering. Slowly, as if drawn, he reached out a hand. He hesitated and looked around the room, searching for an alternate explanation. There was nothing. When he looked back at the wall, the shadow had changed. It was no longer shapeless. It had a face…”

What begins as a restless night quickly turns into something far more terrifying, as the line between dream and waking life begins to blur. Some things don’t stay in your head, some things find a way out. This original paranormal horror story explores nightmares, manifestation, and the moment when fear becomes something real.

S02 - Flash Fiction 03 - The Ghost on the Staircase by John Gorman | A quick ghostly chill27 Mar 202600:11:23
Should people tell their guests about the ghosts lingering in their homes...?

“The staircase was just behind the sofa in the open-plan living room and once, a coat hanger tumbled down the stairs unaided. There was nobody upstairs, however there was a small pile of hangers on the top step and maybe one of them was loose. These odd events I could explain logically. Ghosts don’t exist…”

At first, it’s easy to dismiss a noise, a movement, something slightly out of place. But when the ordinary explanations begin to wear thin, a question starts to form: What if it isn’t nothing? This original paranormal ghost story explores skepticism, subtle hauntings, and the moment when logic is no longer enough.

Flash Fiction Friday – a bite-sized tale designed to unsettle.

If you enjoy this story, continue your listening with:
The Thing in the Wall (a creeping domestic horror where something hidden begins to make itself known)
Helen (Something in the Cellar) (a chilling perspective-driven story where the past refuses to stay quiet)
The Pale One at the Window (a slow-building tale where something familiar begins to feel deeply wrong)

About the Author
John Gorman is a forensic scientist with a strong grounding in evidence and logic — making his fascination with the unexplained all the more compelling. Inspired by local hauntings in Lancashire and his own experiences, The Ghost on the Staircase marks his first step into supernatural fiction.

S02 - EP09 - Fossils by Willerby | A thrilling time-slip adventure story25 Mar 202600:28:02
The past does not always stay buried...

“When Lisa tried to leave the village to go shopping, she found the turn onto the main road going to Beckworth blocked. The hedges had grown to an enormous size and intertwined themselves over the tarmac like the fingers of two clasping hands. By pushing the leaves aside, she could just see through. Cars were rushing past, but none slowed, and Lisa wondered if Willerby was being forgotten…”

What begins as a small, unsettling change quickly becomes something far more disturbing, as Willerby begins to close in on itself, and the outside world drifts further away. This original paranormal horror story explores isolation, forgotten places, and the terrifying idea of being slowly erased from the world beyond.

If you enjoy this story, continue your listening with:
Shortcuts (another unsettling tale from Willerby, where a simple path leads somewhere you shouldn’t go)
Blackdamp (a tense story where something buried proves far more dangerous than expected)
Spores (a deeply unsettling tale where something begins to spread and take hold)

About the Story
Fossils comes from the mysterious town of Willerby — a place that seems to exist slightly out of step with the rest of the world. These stories were discovered during the early planning stages of Haunted UK Fiction, on a website dedicated to documenting the town and its inhabitants. The identity of those behind it remains unknown, but permission was granted to share these accounts under a number of unusual conditions.

Not every reflection belongs to the person standing before it...

“It wasn’t dramatic at first. Just little things. A prickle on the back of her neck whenever she passed the hallway mirror. The way her phone screen sometimes lit up on its own, reflecting her face too pale, too elongated. The kitchen window fogging faintly when she stood near it, though the air was dry…”

S02 - EP06 - Deathly Cold by Harrie Tabor | A winter horror story04 Mar 202600:22:16
Sometimes the cold cuts deeper than expected...

“It was cold. She worked her fingertips into the ice, appreciating the smoothness of the whale’s skin. The longer she held her hand there, the damper her palm became. She could even feel the water seeping into the edge of her sleeve. The guilt struck her like a sledgehammer. There shouldn’t be that much water, surely. Was the sculpture even there any more? She must’ve single handedly melted it…”

What begins as a simple interaction quickly turns unsettling, as something shifts beneath the surface, and the cold becomes something far more than just temperature. This original paranormal horror story explores transformation, unease, and the quiet terror of realizing something is changing… and you may be part of it.

If you enjoy this story, continue your listening with:
Running from the Christmas Tractor (another eerie and darkly playful story by the same author, where something unexpected turns terrifying)

A storm rising. A figure revealed. Some events are sadly destined to repeat...

“The swell of the waves was much higher now and I could hear them crashing against the cliffs... The shrubs in the garden swayed in the wind.  The scene was almost unrecognisable as the location of my walk earlier in the day. My eyes glanced to the left along the path that I had used. A sudden flash of lightning highlighted the way and that’s when I first saw her…”

A guest at a manor house bears witness terrible events unfolding again and again...

“There, stood by the bannister and staring down at me with an intensity I found hard to bear, was a man, smartly dressed, with thick black hair and black side whiskers.  What I noticed most were his angular features and prominent cheekbones.  I stood there, frozen to the spot and meeting his cold stare for what seemed like an eternity before I was finally able to tear my eyes away and when I glanced back only several seconds later, he was gone…”

What begins as a quiet stay in a historic house soon becomes something far more unsettling, as a guest finds themselves witnessing events that seem to repeat — as though the past is not finished with the present. Some places don’t just remember… they replay. This original paranormal gothic horror story explores lingering tragedy, time loops, and the eerie sensation of becoming part of something that has happened before.

From the moment of its creation, a wedding dress bears silent witness to decades of human lives.

“The box moved again. Had it been years already? This time, a man was staring back at me. I recognized him from the wedding. His eyes looked sad. I felt his tears fall and soak into my satin. I could feel his heavy heart. He put the lid back on the box and I felt myself being carried away…”

From the moment it is first worn, a simple dress becomes something more — a silent witness to love, loss, and the passing of time, carrying the weight of every life it touches. This original paranormal story explores memory, attachment, and the quiet haunting of objects that never forget.

Flash Fiction Friday – a bite-sized tale designed to linger.

S02 - EP02 - Spores by Lewis Darley | A speculative horror story11 Feb 202600:19:30
A hidden passage. A flicker of light. Something is spreading behind the walls.

“Robert placed his face in the hole, to find a stone opening. It was a natural cave... It had been placed here, decoratively, and judging by the length of the candle, recently…”

What begins as a small, almost insignificant discovery quickly turns into something far more disturbing, as the boundaries between the known and the hidden begin to break down. Some things don’t stay contained... they grow. This original paranormal horror story explores intrusion, decay, and the terrifying idea that something may already be inside your home.

S01 - EP13 - The Lady of the Stairs by LJ Aldon | A Scottish Christmas ghost story12 Dec 202500:26:57
A castle legend. A restless spirit. A voice determined to be heard.

“Around the late 1400s, there was a woman who was a mistress of one of my ancestor’s lairds. His vengeful wife locked her up in one of the castle turrets, where she perished from not eating. Some psychics have seen her. She walks the stairways at night.”  “That’s a lie,” a voice hissed in Pucci’s ear—warm breath prickled her cheek..."

What begins as a familiar ghost story soon unravels into something far more unsettling, as a presence steps forward to challenge the version of events the living have long accepted. Some spirits don’t linger to haunt… but to be understood. This original paranormal ghost story explores historical hauntings, hidden truths, and the unsettling moment when the past begins to speak for itself.

If you enjoy this story, continue your listening with:
Sukie in the Graveyard (a touching and atmospheric story of presence, memory, and connection beyond death)
Shadows in the Barri Gotic (a haunting tied to place, history, and something that refuses to fade)
Echoes in the Mist (a folklore-rich tale of second sight and voices carried through time)
