On the buyer side, there have been instances of individuals calling random "support" numbers found online, unknowingly inviting scams. A reminder: always initiate support requests solely through Etsy's official Help Center and their contact support form.

2. UK Sellers & Royal Mail Collaboration: Good news for UK sellers! You can now let Royal Mail print your Etsy shipping labels. However, there's a catch: each label comes with a QR code that needs scanning by Royal Mail – which can be time-consuming.

3. Etsy's Share & Save Program: If you missed our previous episode on this, here's a refresher: Sellers can save 4% by leveraging this program. The links are 'cookied' for 30 days, allowing you to earn from any purchase made within that time.

We tend to think getting scammed is usually on the buyer's end.  But it's very common for sellers to get scammed as well.  Today I will dive into the top 9 Etsy seller scams out there so you can stay clear of these scumbag fraudsters.  

Here's a summary of what's covered:

  • Claiming there was an issue accepting payment for their order and sending you a fake QR code through Messages saying that you need to scan it to confirm their purchase. 
  • Asking for additional items to be added to their order. For example, asking sellers to purchase and include a highly-priced gift card with their order and promising to pay them back later. 
  • Claiming they want to purchase items listed in a link that is actually malware or a link to a phishing site.
  • Offering to send you more money than you are asking for your item? This is known as an overpayment scam.
  • Insisting you reply via a personal email address, off of Etsy? A buyer who immediately insists on communicating off of our site may be questionable.  Your email is never required for a buyer to complete a purchase. (you shouldn't be communicating through email if you're a buyer or seller)
  • Seeming not to have read or looked at your listing, based on their vague questions. (could be a red flag)
  • Refusing to go through Etsy Checkout, thereby disqualifying the transaction from any Etsy protection.
  • Having a particular interest in an item of relatively high value. Scammers tend to focus on mid and high-value listings. 
  • Getting any message where someone is offering help with marketing, promotion, etc.

The new make an offer feature is live on Etsy for everyone... But it doesn't come without flaws.  I cover this hot topic along with some other important Etsy news going on this week.  Here's a summary of what's included in this new episode:

Etsy launches more registries.  Gift and baby gift.

This is a great way to attract buyers and curate a catalog for your loved ones.

Etsy and eBay are testing moving product descriptions further down the page. 

This is causing concerns buyers won't understand fully what they're buying or miss crucial information.  The companies explained they want to move up item specs further up the page.

One eBay seller complained that they saw sponsored listings in the middle of their listing above the description.  I haven't heard of this happening on etsy, but there are related listings on the bottom. 

Most buyers do not read the descriptions, especially on eBay.  Pictures/video tell the story which is even more of a reason to make sure they are clear.  Keep in mind that with etsy, descriptions do play a part when it comes to SEO

Here's what's going on in today's episode:

-You can earn commission through Etsy's Creator Co program through social media posts.  You can apply here:  www.creatorco.etsy.com

-USPS is changing their rates again on July 9th.  There's some good and bad news with the changes.  Hey, at least it's not all bad, right?  Here are the main changes:

  • Priority Mail rates are getting up to $4.83 cheaper 
  • First Class Package & Parcel Select Ground are merging into the new Ground Advantage name. The slower 2-5 day delivery speed stays the same—they're just changing the names.
  • Ground Advantage rates for packages under 1 pound (First Class Package) are staying the same 
  • Ground Advantage rates for packages over 1 pound (Parcel Select) are mixed—some rates are increasing up to $1.06, while others are decreasing up to $3.
  • Media Mail rates are increasing by 7% across the board.
  • Signature Confirmation is increasing to $3.40.
  • Everything else is staying the same

AI is everyone and now it's taking over marketplaces.  You now see tons of AI-generated stuff for sale on etsy such as art, templates, graphics, and more.

But the real question is… is this allowed on Etsy?   Let's dive into this in today's episode of seller news.

Kind of a light Etsy news week so I want to cover a hot newsworthy topic that is of course controversial. 

Handmade sellers view AI-generated sellers as cutting corners and not handmade since a computer is generating the stuff.  But that doesn't mean that it's necessarily not allowed...

So I put my detective hat on to try and figure out if Etsy has specifically addressed this.

First, let's just distinguish what I'm specifically talking about when it comes to AI-generated.  You can have AI programs such as Chatgpi generate ideas and content based on questions you ask.  But you still have to use this information to create the end product.  So more or less you're using it for research purposes and are still creating the product. I don't think there's anything wrong with using AI this way and I don't believe it would violate any Etsy policies. 

What I'm specifically talking about is using an AI tool to generate images that you then simply download and put on Etsy for sale without editing them, changing them, or even confirming if you have the right to use them…  This I feel is a slippery slow and problematic. 

This is what I want to figure out.\

First, I searched the web which is always a great idea when you want to find accurate information you can trust.. lol.

Two articles came up both saying you CAN sell AI-generated art with one linking to Etsy's policies.

So I went right to the source to double-check.  I went to Etsy's seller handbook.  

And here's what Etsy's handmade policy states…

I couldn't find anything specific to AI products, but I did review their handmade policies.  

Based on what I found, even though AI isn't specifically mentioned, I don't see how it's not a violation to use an AI-generated product that you didn't personally design.  And I don't see how you would "make" the items unless you're using AI to create a pattern and then make it.  But that seems like it's never the case because I think the goal with AI-generated stuff is less work and a quick buck.

While I haven't heard of Etsy taking anything AI-generated down, there are a lot of problems with managing this.  First, if the seller isn't saying it's AI-generated then it will be really hard to find out, especially if the AI tool is generating original stuff.  Second, if it's stated as AI-generated on the listing, then is it completely generated, unaltered, or slightly altered which probably would be allowed.  Or is it AI-related content, information, that was completely created by the seller such as ai prompts… ughhh I know confusing…

So maybe I'm leaving you with more questions than answers until etsy specifically addresses this...

I'll leave you with this...

Don't use this as an excuse to give up on your shop.  You can't worry about what other people are doing all the time.  It's a time and energy such.

If you want your Etsy business to succeed I guarantee something like this won't stop you unless you let it.

This is just the shiny object of controversy of the day.  There will always be a new controversy on the horizon.  It will not end with this.  Just know this, accept it, and learn to grow a thick skin.  It can only bother you, distract you or impede you if you let it.
