Should You "Name" Your Workouts? - ep. 5
Saison 1 · Épisode 5
mercredi 22 juillet 2026 • Durée 16:18
This episode explores one of CrossFit's most influential contributions to the fitness industry: turning ordinary workouts into memorable, named experiences. Although CrossFit's popularity has changed over the years, Eric believes gym owners can learn a great deal from the community, structure, and identity it created around fitness.
One particularly effective idea was naming its Workouts of the Day, including recognizable benchmark and Hero workouts. Giving a workout a name made it feel like something members could anticipate, remember, discuss, repeat, and compare—not merely another collection of exercises.
Eric applies this idea at Workout Hero Club by creating named workout formats inspired by songs, movies, pop culture, and members themselves. His "Star Wars" format, for example, is built around groups of three: three stations, three exercises at each station, and three rounds. Star Wars trivia and themed variations are then added to make the week feel like a shared event.
Workouts can also be named in honor of individual members. Eric shares the example of "The Bulgarian Beast," a Bulgarian split-squat-focused workout inspired by one of his members and her nickname. This type of personalization makes members feel recognized while strengthening their emotional connection to the gym and its community.
Named workouts also prevent sessions from blending together. Without a distinct identity, members may remember only that they exercised—not what made a particular workout special.
A strong name creates a mental hook and gives trainers opportunities to add themes, trivia, challenges, stories, and traditions.
The deeper lesson is that the workout itself is the gym's primary product. Programming may be scientifically sound, but if members consistently feel bored, retention will suffer. Eric compares it to a restaurant: excellent service, atmosphere, and pricing cannot compensate for terrible food.
In the same way, branding and customer service cannot rescue a workout experience that members don't enjoy.
The episode's central takeaway is:
Don't merely program exercises—create workout experiences worth naming, remembering, and talking about.
PCA - Your #1 Way To Hang Onto Clients Longer - Ep. 4
Saison 1 · Épisode 4
dimanche 19 juillet 2026 • Durée 13:40
This episode explains why every gym owner should clearly define their Perfect Client Avatar—or PCA. Inspired by a Packers podcast that built its content around one imaginary ideal listener, Eric encourages gym owners to picture the exact person they most enjoy serving and build their gym experience around that person.
A PCA goes deeper than age and gender. Gym owners should understand the person's lifestyle, exercise history, favorite and least-favorite activities, frustrations, fears, beliefs about fitness and nutrition, and what they truly want from a gym. One of the easiest ways to develop this avatar is to identify an existing client you love working with and interview them about what they were thinking before joining, what they had tried previously, and what the gym is doing especially well.
Eric compares the ideal client to the center of a target. A gym can still welcome people who fall within the surrounding rings, but it should establish clear boundaries around whom it can—and cannot—serve effectively. At Workout Hero Club, for example, the primary emphasis is strength and building muscle rather than weight loss. People outside the core demographic may still join through referrals, but the gym's public messaging remains focused on its ideal members.
Clearly defining your PCA helps prospective clients quickly answer the question, "Is this place for me?" It also makes the gym more distinctive and attractive by allowing its personality, references, programming, and culture to speak directly to the right people.
The episode concludes with an idea from Mike Michalowicz's The Pumpkin Plan: identify your very best clients, learn what makes them such a great fit, invest more deeply in serving them, and intentionally look for more people like them.
The episode's central takeaway is:
Don't try to build a gym for everyone. Build an exceptional gym for the people you most want to serve—and become the obvious choice for more people just like them.

How To Keep Clients Coming Back - Episode 2
Saison 1 · Épisode 2
jeudi 25 juin 2026 • Durée 16:28
In Episode 2 of The Gym Owner Beast Show, Eric challenges gym owners to stop thinking like marketers and start thinking like retention experts. Rather than chasing the next new lead, Eric explains why the biggest opportunity for growth lies in creating an unforgettable experience for the members you already have.
Through practical examples and a mindset shift, he encourages owners to build a gym culture that inspires loyalty, community, and long-term transformation—not just workouts.
Biggest Takeaways
Retention is the true growth engine. Keeping members longer has a bigger impact than constantly replacing people who leave.
Experience beats equipment. People stay because of how a gym makes them feel, not because of the latest machines or programming.
Culture is intentional. Strong communities don't happen by accident—they're designed through consistent habits, recognition, and leadership.
Think beyond fitness. Members are looking for belonging, confidence, encouragement, and identity just as much as physical results.
Build something people don't want to leave. The ultimate goal is to create a gym that becomes part of someone's life, not just part of their weekly schedule.
