| How To Train Your Mind: The surprising benefits of play | 24 Feb 2026 | 00:23:24 | |
Turns out you don't learn faster when you're stressed, you learn faster when you're happy! So let's talk about treating your brain like a friend, not a factory worker.
Muscles respond to stress with pretty linear upgrades; brains don’t. Brains upgrade through meaning, novelty, and attention—especially when something feels like play. That’s why memory champions don’t “grind” digits: they build absurd stories and mental rooms and suddenly their recall looks like magic. Same with skills.
Stress is useful—but mostly as a signal: “avoid that.” If you want real output, your job is to become a better teacher to yourself: make the hard thing interesting enough that you’ll come back tomorrow.
Turn one task into a game (score it, time it, level it up).
Find the “fun entry point” and start there, not with drills.
Reduce stress friction: smaller reps, better cues, better environment.
Listen in—and pick one thing to make genuinely enjoyable today.

| The Weird Psychology of Communication, Self-control, and Gossip: What evolution teaches us about communicating your needs clearly | 17 Feb 2026 | 00:39:38 | |
In the noble quest to understand our minds, today we take a new angle. We track how grunts turned into gossip, myths, and the weird human habit of blushing when we screw up.
You’ll see why your brain is basically a compression algorithm: squeezing an entire inner universe through a tiny mouth-shaped funnel. We go from jellyfish nerve nets to gossip networks, and beyond. How shared stories make money, nations and even your job “real”.
Along the way, we poke at shame, status, and why your reputation now travels faster than any spear ever did. It’s part history, psychology, mindset lesson, and part mirror.
You’ll probably recognise more of yourself than you’d like:
Use “compression” as a mental model to communicate ideas more clearly.
Spot how gossip and reputation are driving your current career decisions.
Rewrite one story you’ve inherited about status, success, or failure.
Listen in, and update the story your brain is running in the background.

| Working with Time Instead of Against It - How to enjoy this year and every year of your life | 30 Dec 2025 | 00:15:57 | |
You have roughly 4,000 weeks. Somehow, nobody mentioned this at school.
This episode takes a cheerful scalpel to modern time-panic—the kind that convinces smart adults that the next app, habit, or color-coded calendar will finally subdue existence. (It won’t.) Time, inconveniently, keeps doing what it has always done: passing. The good news is that this makes it remarkably reliable, like a train that never apologizes. You’ll explore why becoming “more efficient” can make you feel more chased, how birthdays can reveal your true time-philosophy, and why sitting quietly for ten minutes can be the most practical thing you do all week. The aim isn’t to win against time. It’s to stop declaring war on the only place life can happen.
Treat calm as a skill, not a personality trait.
Build plans that assume “the deck” never clears.
Use meditation as a weekly perspective tune-up.
Press play, then reclaim one hour you were about to surrender.

| Ego and the Prisoner of Success: 3 Steps to Build Silent Confidence | 31 Jan 2025 | 00:30:26 | |
Ego loves company. But success? Success loves silence.
Ever noticed how the loudest person in the room rarely has the most interesting thing to say? There's a reason for that. And it's the same reason why Elizabeth Holmes is in prison while the world's best operators are probably people you've never heard of.
In this episode:
- The "Washington Protocol": How America's first president used strategic humility to build an empire (and why modern leaders keep missing the point)
- Lehman Brothers' $600 billion ego trip: A masterclass in how NOT to handle success
- The Blockbuster Effect: When being the best becomes your worst enemy
This isn't just another episode about ego. It's a blueprint for building the kind of confidence that whispers instead of shouts. Because real success? It doesn't need a megaphone.

| 16 Strange But Beautiful Paradoxes in Life (The hidden keys to fulfilment) | 24 Jan 2025 | 00:25:50 | |
What If Everything You Knew About Success Was Backward?
Our lives are shaped by contradictions:
The harder we chase happiness, the further it seems.
The more freedom we gain, the more constrained we feel.
You need money to be happy, but then chasing money makes you miserable.
The more we learn, the more we realize we know absolutely nothing
These are some of life’s paradoxes, and they are as profound as they are puzzling.
In this episode, we explore 16 of these paradoxes, breaking down their underlying logic and what they reveal about the human condition.
We’ll unpack why they exist, how they shape your life without you even noticing, and how to embrace the absurdity instead of letting it drive you insane.
Drawing on philosophy, psychology, and practical insights, we’ll show how embracing these paradoxes can lead to a richer, more intentional life.
It’s an invitation to think deeply, challenge assumptions, and find clarity in life’s complexities.

| What Are The Top 5 Reasons People Fail To Achieve Their Goals | 07 Jan 2025 | 00:30:57 | |
The psychology of beating procrastination, inaction, and confusion that lets you systematically work towards any goal.
Goal setting is easy - Goal achieving is a very different thing.

Task Initiation Paralysis - Shows us how Charles Darwin overcame the most complex tasks in history.
Ulysses Contracts - Teaches us how Victor Hugo wrote the timeless Hunchback of Notre Dame ahead of schedule by engineering his environment.
Effective vs Fluffy Intentions - How psychologists helped heart surgery patients double their success rates through a simple sentence change.
Sam also lists some of the most effective resources and tools you can access to stay on track to beat the common problems we face.

We juggle multiple priorities and hectic demands, so it's easy to get lost in the day-to-day. Today's episode will combine Psychology with Stoicism as we ask the most important questions we can of ourselves to help direct our lives in the direction we want them to take.

Turning obstacles into opportunity

| Journey vs Destination: How to Optimise For The Right Things In Life | 27 Dec 2024 | 00:14:55 | |
Why do we get off track, and how do we get back on track?
Humans love goals, but where do our goals come from?
How much do we choose them vs. have them chosen for us...
We learn how to stop working towards destinations that look good to others.
Instead, we dissect what makes a good goal that creates a journey we want to go on.
Topics include:
The reality of aspirational destinations
Focussing on the journeys of your life
A healthy relationship with money
How to stay motivated
The rule of thirds
As we learn more about appreciating the road less travelled and what a good life means to us we can step back from the frenetic distractions and occupations to think about what really matters.
As the famous saying goes "It's just another cold dark night on the side of Everest" - Sometimes our goals feel boring in the day-to-day and we lose sight of the big picture. Remember there is something worth fighting for.

| The Psychology of Buddy the Elf ☃️❄️🎅 | 20 Dec 2024 | 00:31:34 | |
The science behind spreading Christmas cheer and getting people to like you.
Not only is Elf a wonderfully silly and enjoyable Christmas movie. Its premise is based on a fascinating concept that can be explored using psychology.
What happens when an adult is raised by elves?
Not only do we get to revisit a great story but we can learn about:
Attachment Theory
Identity Development
Social Contagion and spreading good vibes
Family Systems
Nuerodivergence and upbringing effects
The psychology of Jor and Wonder
A great way to learn some science and develop your own sense of curiosity and wonder is to dive headfirst down rabbit holes of psychology and overly analyse movies for the sheer hell of it.
It's a great movie and there's lots to learn about ourselves, Christmas and happiness when we look beyond the candy canes and maple syrup.

| Free Will and the War Against Our Minds - Are We Becoming NPCs? | 06 Dec 2024 | 00:43:31 | |
The Psychology of the 5 Types of Non-Player Characters - How to Fix Them and Be a Main Character Thinker.
The same story plays out online every day. The same people are getting outraged about the same things again and again. Like Clockwork.
The human brain is highly optimised to rely on heuristics and simplistic decisions. Modern media hijacks this system to control our beliefs and emotions based on the agenda of other people.
This episode helps listeners build autonomy over their beliefs and emotions by learning the different types of Non-Player-Character:
The Conformist NPC - Believes the consensus politically correct ideas
The Contrarian NPC - Believes the opposite of the consensus and seeks conspiracy
The Disciple NPC - Believes their preferred leader
The Tribalist NPC - Follows the tribe and us vs them mentality
The Averager NPC - Seeks the middle ground without understanding the merits of an argument.
Learn the psychology of the processes behind each NPC type and how different types of critical thinking systems or defence systems get turned on and off based simply on who delivers the message.
Building your own worldview is one of the most important things you can do in an increasingly confusing and polarised world.

| Leaving a Legacy: What do we actually get remembered for - Lessons on family and life - [Storied Recipe] | 19 Dec 2025 | 00:42:36 | |
How to nurture the best in people with consistency and be remembered for what matters.
This is going to be a different episode about a cake my nan used to make. But isn't just a story about cake. It's about the difference between control and nurture. My school thought resilience came from forcing kids to clear their plates (even if they ended up vomitting). They were wrong. My Nan knew that real strength comes from consistency. She made me the same pineapple upside-down cake every time I visited for a decade.
Even when she went blind, she kept creating. She was an entrepreneur, an artist, and the village baker.
She taught me that you don't build character by breaking someone's spirit. You build it by showing up. By paying attention. By finding the one thing they can stomach and giving it to them again and again.
Nurture over control: You get more out of people by supporting their quirks than forcing compliance.
Consistency is love: Showing up the same way for years builds more trust than grand gestures.
Create despite limits: My Nan went blind and kept making things; focus on what you can do.
Listen to learn how a simple cake became a masterclass in leadership and love.

Mean Girls was one of the biggest movies of 2004 - Twenty years later it still touches the themes that teenagers struggle with the world over.
Navigating cut-throat social hierarchies and the urge to morph our identity to fit in.

Where narcissism comes from
How high-school screws with our morals
Why do we become submissive to mean people
What people get wrong about Mean Girls and Regina George
By revisiting the story of Mean Girls and examining the character of Regina George in detail we can learn a lot about how we navigate the world ourselves.

| The Psychology of Black Friday - Social Contagions, Deal FOMO & Retail Rage | 26 Nov 2024 | 00:27:32 | |
What are the secret drivers behind the year's biggest shopping day, and why is there so much fighting?
Black Friday has become an inescapable part of life, with a deal notification even popping up as a type this... (thanks Grammarly I don't need 50% off)
But it wasn't always this way.
In the early 1950's Philadelphia after Thanksgiving, a flood of traffic would swell for the local football game and downtown shopping. Cops called the gridlock "Black Friday" as a derogatory term. It was slowly adopted by shops and morphed into the retail phenomenon we know today.
We pull the curtains back on this crazy day:
Psychological levers that get us to spend
Case studies of different fights and drama
How shopping impacts our emotions
What are we really seeking from a deal
Learn about why our rational thinking gets turned off as shops manipulate our minds to get us into a buying frenzy and how it can turn violent. And whose fault is it?

| How To Gracefully Deal With Life Problems | 22 Nov 2024 | 00:22:43 | |
A 3 part decision framework to understand and solve any frustration.
Ultimately all problems are a perception of the mind. Sometimes there is a way around or through the problem that we can't see.
This episode Sam Webster explores a framework to help us diagnose the problem we are experiencing so we can correctly deal with it.
Problems we want to have - Small problems that are connected to a bigger goal we want (see the last episode)
Problems we can't change - Realities of life we need to accept
Problems we don't want to have - Actual problems we need to creatively and logically solve
This episode covers the whole framework with details on steps 2 and 3. To listen to the full set of ideas for part one see the last episode on real advice to build gratitude that doesn't suck.

Burn the manifestation guide and step away from the affirmations. Here are some unusual but realistic ways to build happiness, wonder and gratitude for the world around you.
We all know we "should" build more gratitude if we want to be happier. You may have heard of gratitude journalling or even be practising it. Today we explore ideas that aren't spoken about but make a difference to your baseline enjoyment of life.
Some themes we highlight:
The recurring problem with goals
Fighting the natural focus on flaws
Building a polymathic curiosity
Raising our baseline everyday gratitude
Zero affirmations
Whether you are highly sceptical of the positive or spiritual aspects of gratitude or just fed up with the endless bad news. It can feel hard to feel grateful when things seem so overwhelmingly difficult but this episode will teach you two ways to fight our focus on flaws and see reality with greater clarity.

| The Psychology of Mistakes - 7 Ways To Fix Lazy Thinking | 29 Oct 2024 | 00:32:57 | |
We celebrate 'hard work" but forget to consider the benefits of thinking "hard thoughts".
This episode teaches how to navigate uncertainty without taking easy options by building a capacity for complexity.
Allow doubt to improve our decisions
Understand multiple causes behind outcomes
Reduce judgement of others
Improve your field of vision
Weight statistics properly
Take ownership of forming opinion without using others
Accept lower confidence and greater accuracy
The mind is full of complexity and it relentlessly tries to optimise and take shortcuts. This serves is well in many aspects but cultivating a practice of taking the harder path in our thinking allows us to see hidden truths behind out assumptions.
To arrive at better decisions we need to learn to balance uncertainty with statistics and see beyond our limited field of view. It isn't easy but the benefits can greatly improve your outcomes and your mindsets.

| The Regret Minimization Framework: How to make life decisions | 16 Dec 2025 | 00:26:10 | |
A boat is safe in the harbor. But that is not what boats are built for.
We tend to view our lives as a single, continuous narrative. But in reality, we are a series of temporary selves, each with a distinct beginning and end. The teenager who dreams of adventure is not the same as the retiree who seeks comfort. When we defer our dreams, we aren't saving them for later; we are denying them to the person we are right now.
This episode explores the "Regret Minimization Framework"—a tool for navigating the uncertainty of the future. We discuss the difference between "peak experiences" and "plateau experiences" and why wisdom lies in knowing the difference. The question isn't how much money you leave behind, but how much life you leave unlived.
Actionable Takeaways:
Time Bucketing: Allocate specific experiences to the specific decades of your life where they belong.
The Cost of Inaction: Recognize that the safe choice often carries the highest hidden cost—regret.
Live with Urgency: Embrace the impermanence of your current self to fuel meaningful action today.
Decide today which version of yourself deserves to be fully realized before it's too late.

| 7 Painful Paradoxes of Self-Improvement that Create More Problems Than They Solve | 25 Oct 2024 | 00:29:59 | |
A lot of the self-improvement industry and advice is backwards. The more books we read the further away from our goals we become.
Ultimately we want to be happier yet we are accruing more and more things to fix before we are happy with ourselves.
In this episode, we explore the biggest paradoxes where the work we do can make us more brittle and breakable:
Effortlessness Paradox - The harder we try the harder we make it
Happiness Paradox - Pursuing Happiness instead chases it away
Validation paradox - Seeking external validation prevents internal validation
Emotions paradox - Suppressing emotions makes them overwhelm us
The Shadow - Rejecting our flaws makes them worse
Planning Paradox - Overplanning reduces adaptability
Self-Improvement Paradox - The more things you find to fix the more broken you feel
Searching and finding can be different things.
We learn a more subtle approach to self-improvement that spends more time building wisdom and focusing on smaller immediately actionable steps with less chasing and running in circles.
We find answers to the question "How do we balance the art of wanting to improve whilst also wanting to live in contentment in the present?"

| 7 Time Management Tips for Busy Mortals | 01 Oct 2024 | 00:19:54 | |
The anti-hustle guide to finding a balance that maximises happiness through intention and wisdom.
Optimising every second of your calendar to the nth degree isn't a recipe for dreamlike productivity, it's a collision course for anxiety-riddled burnout. In our era of ever more time demands what are we to do?
Oliver Burkman in his book 4,000 week presents a guide to living as a human being in a messy and demanding environment that allows you to prioritise what's essential in a calm and rational manner. The key is to not forget what else is important in a life well lived besides productive output.
We can't be everywhere and do everything but anything we do commit to takes from the things we don't. Growing old and missing out on a bunch of important non-urgent life goals is not where you want to end up.
This episode discusses the 7 best lessons of wisdom from Oliver Burkmen's book along with some advice from Psychology and Sam's own experiences.

| Cognitive Rigidity: 5 Lessons to build a flexible mind - [Cognitive Biases #6] | 12 Dec 2025 | 00:44:14 | |
How to master cognitive flexibility by understanding the biases that keep you stuck.
In WWI, generals sent horses against machine guns. Cognitive Rigidity mean they couldn't reimagine the battlefield.
In this episode, I break down the five mental traps keeping you stuck. We look at why you value your own bad ideas more than good ones (The Endowment Effect) and why you can’t stop scrolling TikTok instead of working (Hyperbolic Discounting). We even cover why Einstein—the genius of flexibility—eventually got stuck in his ways and rejected quantum mechanics.
Actionable Takeaways:
Reimagine the tool: Don't ask what it is, ask what it could be to overcome functional fixedness.
Question the crowd: The Bandwagon Effect offers safety, not truth; dare to be the outlier.
Respect the future: Overcome the urge for immediate gratification by empathizing with your future self.
Choose to see the world differently and open the door to possibility.
