Dan DeBehnke, MD, MBA — COVID’s Effects on Our Healthcare Systems01 Jun 202000:39:16

Dr. Dan DeBehnke is an emergency care physician who became a health system CEO and now is an advisor to executives of healthcare systems. Needless to say, the last couple of months he’s been monitoring the effects of the COVID pandemic and evaluating how healthcare systems can best respond in this time of decreased profit margins.

Dr. DeBehnke believes that, like it or not, the genie is out of the bottle, and telemedicine is here to stay. Though it’s not ideal for every situation, telemarketing has positive ramifications for both the patient and physician. Dr. DeBehnke believes healthcare systems need to revisit their pre-COVID strategic plans, paying special attention to pricey fixed assets.

Finally Dr. DeBehnke gives invaluable advice to fellow physicians who are interested in moving into leadership positions. In a nutshell: first, excel at your trade, and then get out of your comfort zone.

In today’s episode you’ll learn:
  • About Dr. DeBehnke’s career path
  • How COVID is affecting healthcare systems’ bottom line
  • Why telemedicine, though not ideal,  is here to stay
  • Why communication is especially important during times of crises
  • Why all pre-COVID strategic plans need to be revisited
  • Dr. DeBehnke’s advice for physicians who want to move into leadership positions

Stephanie Lahr, MD — How a Hurricane Shaped a Career06 Jan 202000:44:44

Dr. Stephanie Lahr is board certified in internal medicine and clinical informatics, and her career path led her to the intersection of medicine and technology. Today she’s the CIO of Regional Health in South Dakota. Her career path wasn’t strategic but was impacted by a hurricane, an interview, personal goals, and a genuine interest in seeing healthcare advance technologically. It’s a story you don’t want to miss.

In today’s episode, Dr. Lahr shares how some honest feedback helped her reevaluate how her passion for her work was having a detrimental impact on her communication style and team-building efforts. That painful-but-needed feedback has had a lasting impact on her own leadership style.

She also highlights a challenge in healthcare that is not often discussed. Physicians are trained to be problem solvers and to be responsible for outcomes. They’re not trained to empower others, to delegate, to lead a team. Sometimes their acquired skills are actually in opposition to what’s needed to be a good leader.

In today’s episode you’ll learn:
  • About Dr. Lahr’s background and current position
  • How Hurricane Ike impacted her career path
  • How honest feedback helped shape Dr. Lahr into the leader she is today
  • Why the skills that make for a great physician are sometimes oppositional to being a great leader
  • How Dr. Lahr prefers to balance life and work
  • About her leadership style

Leadership Essentials - Meeting Adversity with Resilience21 Apr 202000:15:03

Whether it’s a global pandemic, the loss of a loved one, a devastating clinical outcome, divorce, or other major life stressor, everyone experiences some form of adversity during their lives. It’s really not a matter of if, but when. How you manage adversity impacts not only your well-being and personal relationships, it affects your capacity to perform professionally, and may even have organizational implications if you’re in a position of formal leadership authority.

Even when you’re not in a season of adversity, others around you might be. Thus, it’s important to promote resilience, lead by example, and influence structural and organizational design so employees and colleagues around you can thrive. Leaders who take a page from their organization’s playbook and create a personal disaster recovery plan will be more resilient and better able to minimize the effects of adversity.

Jason Mizell, MD — Preparing Physicians for Financial Freedom and Wellbeing30 Mar 202000:35:10

Dr. Jason Mizell understands first-hand how puzzling and overwhelming finances can be to physicians. After all, in school their courses include very little, if any, business or financial material. When the handsome paychecks start rolling in, along with credit offers, and social expectations, it’s too easy for young doctors to find themselves buried in student loans and other debt. This affects their quality of life, their sense of personal success, their attitudes toward their work... Everyone loses.

To address this issue, Dr. Jason Mizell created a course for residents and medical students to prepare them to make wise financial decisions. Armed with knowledge and strategy, his students are empowered to erase their debt, invest in their future, and go to work not because they need the paycheck to pay bills...but because that’s where they want to be.

In today’s episode you’ll learn:
  • About Dr. Mizell’s background
  • Why Dr. Mizell created a finance course for residents and medical students
  • How financial ignorance can cripple other areas of life
  • About the ripple effect of financial wellbeing

Qaali Hussein, M.D. — Being the Change16 Mar 202000:36:48

When Dr. Qaali Hussein’s family fled war-torn Somalia in the ‘90s, she experienced trauma first-hand. Today as an trauma surgeon, helping patients through life-changing events is what she specializes in. Mending and repairing is what she loves doing.

But her path to medical school was full of roadblocks. When a hijab-wearing Muslim girl announces she wants to be a mother and a surgeon, her culture responds, “impossible.” But Dr. Hussein knew herself. She knew her values, and she knew what she wanted. And in the face of naysayers -- but with the encouragement of her grandmother -- she pushed ahead. Not only did she complete her residency while gestating multiple times, she has paved the way for future female generations to do the same. Being the change she wants to see, she is an advocate for all women and underrepresented minorities.

In today’s episode, hear Dr. Hussein’s inspiring story of triumph in the face of repeated adversities -- from her culture, her superiors, and even her patients. She’s not bitter about her hardships. On the contrary, she’s motivated to be an inspiration to others.

In today’s episode you’ll learn:
  • About Dr. Hussein’s background
  • About her grandmother who sowed the seeds of independence and courage
  • About the adversities of women in medicine, especially Muslim
  • About Dr. Hussein’s other pursuits and entrepreneurial endeavors

She also explains the stages of systemic change within an organization and how leaders can best communicate with all involved.

Mentor Coach Lead - Coaching for Performance24 Apr 202300:14:57

Welcome back to season eight of the Growth Edge leadership podcast. This season is all about mentorship, sponsorship, and coaching, and coincides with the release of my most recent book; Mentor Coach Lead to Peak Professional Performance. I am so delighted to hear the positive feedback from so many of you about the impact of this topic and these episodes, and I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for the number of you who have already purchased and read a copy, and acquired copies for others.

In this week’s Growth Edge leadership podcast episode, we discuss

coaching for performance. In life and leadership, feedback is fuel to inform excellence. But, the farther we advance in our careers and the higher we ascend in leadership, the less likely we are to receive it. The most successful leaders intentionally, heck, they relentlessly, seek it out, because they know that when it comes to blind spots, weaknesses, and biases, ignorance is not bliss.
