Welcome back tooo…. A month of February ATP Review Edition of Hey, Great Shot!! In part one of a two-part megapod, co-hosts Alex Gruskin and Max Rothman attempt to breakdown all of February’s action on the ATP Tour. The guys start with three-minute breakdowns of all of the non-North American tournaments, focusing on the best and worst performances in each event. They then take a deep dive into the inaugural New York Open, covering everything from the tournament’s choice to paint grey courts to the quality of play that occurred on those courts. Throughout the episode the guys focus on the play of the many #NextGenATP players on tour. They debate things such as the upside of Karen Khachanov, the progression of Frances Tiafoe, the emergence of Sebastian Korda, and so much more. Given the success of the young Americans in 2018, Gruskin also does his best to stump Rothman with a game of Jonathan Kelley-inspired tennis trivia. Welcome back toooooo…. Part two of a Challenger Recap edition of Hey, Great Shot!! In this week’s episode, co-hosts Alex Gruskin and Max Rothman discuss the biggest storylines that emerged from the 2018 RBC Championships of Dallas Challenger event. The guys debate the upside of Mackenzie McDonald, quarrel over the skillset of Stefan Kozlov, and once again marvel at the quality of play at the challenger level. A quick production note: As this segment was originally recorded alongside of the Newport Challenger Recap, there is no formal Changeover Chat in this episode. To avoid leaving you listeners high and dry, Gruskin instead rants about his frustration with the television show The Bachelor, and offers a brief look into the joys of a Bar Mitzvah service. Bonus: Revisiting the Tennys Sandgren Drama20 Feb 201800:10:21
Every week, the Great Shot Podcast guys end up having to leave out segments that don't make the final cut for one reason or another.  During the Australian Open, Alex Gruskin and Max Rothman had an in depth discussion on the Tennys Sandgren drama and what their personal opinions were on the entire situation. Episode 15: 2018 Newport Beach Challenger Recap13 Feb 201800:46:48
Welcome toooooo…. A Two-Part Oracle Challenger Series edition of Hey, Great Shot!!!! In this week’s episode, co-hosts Alex Gruskin and Max Rothman take their first deep dive into the 2018 ATP Challenger season with a conversation about the brand new Oracle Challenger Event hosted in Newport, California. The guys discuss their favorite matches of the tournament, marvel at quality of tournament field, and, for the sake of brevity, institute a 3-minute shot clock per match recap (Spoiler: it doesn’t always work). Never to be forgotten, the two end with a Changeover Chat in which Rothman offers a radical proposal regarding line calls that you won’t want to miss. A quick production note: This week’s episode initially contained recaps of both the Newport and Dallas Challenger events from a few weeks ago. Given how many excellent matches transpired in each event, and in an attempt to not detract from either tournament, the guys decided to divide the recaps into two separate podcasts. If you enjoy this week’s episode, we promise you’ll like our Dallas recap as well, so be sure to check back with us later in the week. Episode 14: 2018 Australian Open Week 2 Recap01 Feb 201801:10:15
Welcome back toooooo…. an Australian Open recap edition of Hey, Great Shot!!!! In this week’s episode, co-hosts Alex Gruskin and Max Rothman attempt to sift through all of the drama and action from the tournament’s second week of play. The guys discuss the (not so sudden) rise of Hyeon Chung, hop on board the Kyle Edmund Express, and recap some of their favorite performances from the year’s first grand slam. As it was one of the biggest stories within the Tennis Twitter Community, they also take a moment to express their opinions on the controversy surrounding Tennys Sandgren’s social media account. Despite heavy protest from Gruskin, the two dedicated this week’s Changeover Chat to the performance of Roger Federer. Rothman makes the obvious case for why Fed must be considered the GOAT, while Gruskin chooses to play the role of Devil’s Advocate by pointing out Fed’s one resume deficiency. They end the show by debating the tournament’s winners and losers (hint to Nike clothing designers, you lost), listing their favorite ATP Tour storylines moving forward, and of course, with advertisements from two new fake sponsors. As always, the opinions in this podcast are our own, and we are happy to debate them with anyone kind enough to listen to or comment on our episode. The guys discuss their favorite matches from each round of play, rave about the quality of tennis thus far, and list their best and worst performances from Week 1. The two also take a few moments to debate the “Russian Troika”, and argue about the upsides of Hyeon Chung, Alex Zverev, and Nick Kyrgios. Be sure to stick around for this week’s Changeover Chat, as the co-hosts do their best to predict Week 2’s matches (Spoiler: neither guy picked Sandgren or Chung to win). Don’t miss this week’s fake ads either, as the guys found two new fake social media apps to sponsor their mid-tournament episode (shoutout to The Grunt App 3.0 and How Many Times?!?!). Episode 12: Australian Open First Round Reviews and Bets17 Jan 201801:10:56
Welcome back toooooo…. Hey, Great Shot!!!! Recorded on MLK Monday, Co-Hosts Alex Gruskin and Max Rothman make their triumphant return to the air with an extensive preview of the 2018 Australian Open men’s singles draw. The hosts debate which of the top eight men’s seeds have the hardest paths to the finals, list their favorite potential 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round matches, and highlight their “darkhorse” candidates for the tournament. Also, given that this episode was recorded Monday night, the two could not resist offering their “hot takes” on Day 1’s action, nor refrain from commenting on the Sock/Isner first round debacles. You’ll also want to stick around for this week’s Changeover Chat segment, as Gruskin names some of his favorite betting opportunities in this year’s tournament. Bets include a daring lay against any of Federer, Nadal, or Djokovic winning the tournament, a bet in favor of either Dimitrov, Kyrgios, and Zverev winning, and a risky parlay involving Juan Martin Del Potro. Don’t miss this week’s fake ads either, as the guys found two new companies to sponsor their 2018 season (shoutout to TourneyTopia.com and Dudi’s Mafia). As always, the opinions in this podcast are our own, and we are happy to debate them with anyone kind enough to listen to or comment on our podcast. Episode 11: #NextGen American Reilly Opelka02 Jan 201800:54:22
Welcome toooooo…. The final 2017 addition of Hey, Great Shot!! Recorded after an ass-whooping from Taylor Fritz in Fifa, co-hosts Alex Gruskin and Max Rothman lick their wounds by continuing their #NextGenATP American series with a discussion about all things Reilly Opelka. The two explain why Opelka’s game is too unique to receive the basic John Isner comparisons, debate the strengths and weaknesses of “Big Man Tennis”, and mention Reilly’s height at least 15 times throughout the episode. To put a bow on the 2017 season, this week’s Changeover Chat hands out some year-end awards to players on the ATP Tour. Awards featured include ATP Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, the “White Goodman Nobody Makes Me Bleed My Own Blood Award”, and a personal favorite, the “Justice League Flop of the year. Back by popular demand, this week’s fake advertisement comes from our favorite fake sponsor of 2017, The Grunt App. You’ll also enjoy this week’s hot mic footage, as Rothman really loses his mind towards the end of this podcast. As always, the opinions in this podcast are our own, and we are happy to debate them with anyone kind enough to listen to or comment on our podcast. The podcast feed is now live, so please share our episodes with your friends, and subscribe to our show on iTunes.
