Kyle Lawrence joins me to discuss The Pineapples of Wrath by Cathon. Thanks to François Vigneault for the ARC.

Kyle Lawrence is a comic writer and producer from New Jersey. He's been a student of the Kubert Art School, has short comics featured in anthologies from Oneshi Press, Back From the Depths and more. Recently he completed a successful Kickstarter campaign for his one-shot comic "Br'er Rabbit in the Jazz Age: Shame of the Zebra", a 1920s mystery set in the heart of Ku Klux Klan territory with an added twist of mysticism and african american folklore. He also runs a comics related YouTube channel called All Hail King Rex. https://www.youtube.com/@hailkingrex https://klawcomics.squarespace.com/

S4E5 - Audiobookish S5E1 - The Ice Children & The Book that No One Wanted to Read

Saison 4 · Épisode 5

mardi 5 septembre 2023Durée 37:54

Episode Notes

The new season of Audiobookish has just launched! You can find Audiobookish wherever you find podcasts.

The first in our specials reviewing the books on The Week Junior Book Awards shortlist for Audiobook of the Year 2023. First up is The Ice Children by M.G. Leonard, as narrated by Helen Keeley and a full cast. At the stroke of midnight on the dawn of December, five-year-old Finn Albedo is found frozen in the city park on a pedestal of ice. The doctor says his heart is beating, but no one can wake him. Finn’s big sister, Bianca, suspects the beautiful sparkling book Finn got from the library has something to do with it all but the mysterious book has vanished and no one will listen. As more children are frozen, Bianca realises she’s running out of time. Is there a connection between the peculiar stranger wearing a top hat and the disappearing books? The search for truth hurls Bianca into a fantastical winter wonderland where all is not as it seems… Can Bianca remember her mission and find a way to save her brother and the other Ice Children before all their hearts are lost forever? Secondly, we have The Book That No One Wanted to Read by Richard Ayoade as narrated by Richard Ayoade, Jarvis Cocker, and Lydia Fox. What is it that makes YOU want to read a book? Richard Ayoade’s children’s debut gives you all the answers in a way that’s silly, funny, and thoroughly beguiling. Have you ever thought about how it feels to be a book? To be left under a whiffy pant pile or shelved, forever collecting dust? To have your pages bent backwards or your spine BROKEN? What if you don’t have a sparkly unicorn or dragon adorning your cover–who will pick you out of the bookshop then? This is the story of the sadly neglected Book That No One Wanted To Read–can its destiny change when it finally meets the right reader? Spoiler alert: yes. Thank you to The Week Junior for sending us the reviewing copies. You can find out more about the awards by visiting their website: https://www.theweekjuniorbookawards.co.uk/

S3E1 - The Spider: Crime Unlimited (with David Banks)

Saison 3 · Épisode 1

mercredi 17 août 2022Durée

Episode Notes

I'm joined by David Banks (@dpbanks67) to review The Spider: Crime Unlimited, a super-villain comic by JERRY SIEGEL DONNE & AVENELL with art from ALDO MARCULETA & GIORGIO TREVISAN.

David Banks lives in Omaha, Nebraska. For the last 20 years he has been performing production and restoration tasks for comic book related projects. When he retired from my day job, he gave himself a not-for-profit “Fan” assignment called The Micronauts 3-year restoration project.

Now two years into the work and with an estimated another year to go. Over 2,000 pages of covers and interior art pages will be restored (not recreated). There will be a how-to “Restoring Old Comics” book assembled from detailed notes and examples gathered along the way. There will be a series of simple videos sharing restoration techniques. Hopefully, people will be able to use the book and videos to restore their own comic restoration projects. Since November 28, 2021 he has been sharing on Twitter examples of the work.

S2E17 - Sever and Wallbreakers

Saison 2 · Épisode 17

mercredi 25 mai 2022Durée 33:14

Episode Notes

We review Sever Book 1 and Wallbeakers

We delve into the submissions pile and review two indie comics.

Sever is by Braiden Cox and Tim Sparvero

Blurb: The story of Sever follows Chloe Williams, otherwise known as Ellipsis, who is an aspiring metal musician finishing up her last year of high school. She plays in a band with a misfit group of friends. First, there is Katie Hoard, the most popular girl at school, due to her social status she prefers not to be seen with the bandmates in worry that it will ruin her reputation, but that doesn't stop her from screaming her lungs out at band practice. Alisha Cho is the band's bassist, she is also one of the smartest kids in school and is always planning ahead. A lot of changes soon occur. One day Chloe's girlfriend and recent drummer, Marilyn Penhurst, returns to town. Normally this would be that big of a problem, but in this case, Marilyn was declared dead 3 years earlier when her parents were in a fatal car crash and they couldn't recover Marilyn's body from the scene. Upon her arrival, seeming darkness looms over the town as Marilyn seems to have her own hidden agenda.

Check out Sever's Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/svr-01/sever-1-a-metal-inspired-horror-romance?ref=discovery&term=sever

Wallbreakers is by Jorge Zevallos

Hot, noisy, and ruthless. New York is suffering one of its worst heatwaves in history. An average joe comes across a mysterious object of occult origin; accidentally unleashing an enemy of pure, unrelenting evil!

They are many, and he but one. Can he survive the hunt?
