Title: Alfred Marshall and Neoclassicism
Author: Robert Hebert
Narrator: Louis Rukeyser
Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 36 mins
Language: English
Release date: 07-14-06
Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Genres: Nonfiction, Economics
Summary:
Darwin's ideas about biological evolution especially influenced Marshall, who learned a great deal about economic behavior by viewing a business firm as a biological organism, complete with a life cycle. He is perhaps best remembered for explaining the interaction of supply (i.e. costs of production) and demand (i.e. consumer utility), using the famous "scissors" metaphor to explain how these forces determine the price of an object.

Summary:
Rather than participate and innovate in the marketplace, generating goods and services that benefit society, people are increasingly vying for political advantage to live at the expense of others. Something for Nothing reveals the social and personal threats inherent in this emerging grabbing match culture, juxtaposing free-market virtues against government vices, explaining how the something-for-nothing mentality corrupts the political system, undermines corporate success, and stifles the individual's ability to prosper and contribute long-term to society. More than exposing the dangers, however, Tracy helps readers set a personal and culture-wide agenda for change.

Title: The Debt Bomb
Author: John Hart, Tom A. Coburn
Narrator: John Pruden
Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 28 mins
Language: English
Release date: 07-09-12
Publisher: Tantor Audio
Genres: Nonfiction, Economics
Summary:
In a nation whose debt has outgrown the size of its entire economy, the greatest threat comes not from any foreign force but from Washington politicians who refuse to relinquish the intoxicating power to borrow and spend. Senator Tom Coburn reveals the fascinating, maddening story of how we got to this point of fiscal crisis - and how we can escape.
Long before America's recent economic downturn, beltway politicians knew the U.S. was going bankrupt. Yet even after several so-called "change" elections, the government has continued its wasteful ways in the face of imminent danger. With passion and clarity, Coburn explains why Washington resists change so fiercely and offers controversial yet common-sense solutions to secure the nation's future.
At a time when millions of Americans are speculating about what is broken in Washington, The Debt Bomb is a candid, thoughtful, nonpartisan exposé of the real problems inside our government. Coburn challenges the conventional wisdom that blames lobbyists, gridlock, and obstructionism, and places the responsibility squarely where it belongs: on members of Congress in both parties who won't let go of the perks of power to serve the true interests of the nation - unless enough citizens take bold steps to demand action.
Throughout a distinguished career as a business owner, physician, and U.S. senator, Tom Coburn has watched his beloved republic careen down a suicidal path. Today, the nation stands on the precipice of financial ruin, a disaster far more dangerous to our safety than any terrorist threats we face. Yet Coburn believes there is still hope - if enough Americans are willing to shake the corridors of Washington and demand action. With an insider's keen eye and a caregiver's deft touch, Coburn diagnoses the mess that career politicians have made of things while misusing their sacred charge to govern.
Coburn's incisive analysis:
Above all, Coburn believes the United States can continue as a beacon of opportunity for future generations - but how we act today will determine whether we deliver the nation to our children and grandchildren fully alive, on life support, or without a pulse.

| Discours de la méthode par René Descartes | Livre Audio Gratuit | 18 Nov 2004 | 02:32:00 | |

Titre: Discours de la méthode
Auteur: René Descartes
Narrateur: Jacques Bonnafé
Format: Unabridged
Durée: 2 hrs and 32 mins
Langue: Français
Date de publication: 11-18-04
Éditeur: Frémeaux & Associés
Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy

Language: English
Release date: 05-29-13

Summary:
In his writing, Mark Twain had a distinctly American humor and was never shy to use it. In this collection of his mostly wise and sometimes controversial observations about the world he lived in, its people, and its ideas, listeners can learn firsthand why he became one of the most popular and irreverent figures of his day.
Drawing from his books, short stories, essays, sketches, and speeches, as well as from travel and autobiographical pieces, The Wisdom of Mark Twain demonstrates that his quick tongue and keen eye offered ideas - explicit and implicit, funny and entertaining, troubling and thought provoking - that remain relatable over 100 years later.

Release date: 12-11-17
Publisher: MSAC Philosophy Group

Summary:
This audiobook contains distinct essays on Darwinian epistemology, the future of shabd yoga, Ken Wilber's Atman Project, Clarence Darrow's agnostic philosophy, and the debate between Richard Feynman and John Lilly over the reality/non-reality of out-of-body experiences.
Excerpt from one of the chapters: I think it is important to distinguish methodological naturalism from a philosophically absolutist position, since trying to ground all things down to the empirical realm and testable realm is a practical process and doesn't necessarily mean that nothing else exists beyond what we can scientifically discern. Too often the practicality of the scientific method gets conflated with ontology, and because of this religionists and others resist the very real benefit of what hardcore reductionism has to offer. Simply put, wielding Occam's Razor or Hume's Maxim or Laplace's Dictum doesn't then mean that only simple things exist, but rather that before building any future scaffolding we make certain not to leave the ground floor wanting because of our hurried inspection.

Summary:
A deeply divisive figure, Friedrich Nietzsche (18441900) remains an enigma to this day. Infamous for his startling assertion that "God is dead", he is often misrepresented and many have sought to discredit his work. In this illuminating account of Nietzsche's life and work, Robert Wicks skilfully navigates the controversy that continues to surround one of todays most famous but least understood thinkers. Exploring the impact of Nietzsche's Christian upbringing and his eventful childhood on his beliefs, Wicks demonstrates that, far from being a nihilist, Nietzsche offers a positive and life-affirming understanding of human nature.

Narrator: Wes Bleed
Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 27 mins
Language: English
Release date: 03-27-17
Publisher: Berrett-Koehler Publishers
Genres: Nonfiction, Economics
Summary:
Peter Georgescu arrived in this country as a penniless Romanian refugee and rose to become the CEO of Young & Rubicam. Which is why he's so heartsick that in America today, with flat wages, disappearing jobs, and a shrinking middle class, his kind of rags-to-riches story doesn't seem possible now. But he has a message for his fellow CEOs: we're the ones who must take the lead in fixing the economy.
Marshaling deeply sobering statistics, Georgescu depicts the stark reality of America today: a nation with greater wealth inequality and lower social mobility than just about any other country in the developed world. But the problem isn't that free-market capitalism no longer works - it's that it's been hijacked by shareholder primacy. Where once our business leaders looked to the needs and interests of a variety of stakeholders - employees, community members, the business itself - now they're myopically focused on maximizing their shareholders' returns and nothing else.
Capitalists Arise! shows how the short-term thinking spawned by shareholder primacy lies at the root of our current economic malaise and social breakdown. But Georgescu offers concrete actions that capitalists themselves can take to create a better future - pay a fair wage, build up the business instead of just the stock price, and more. The irony is that if businesses do this, shareholders will do even better. In the long run, businesses can thrive only when society is healthy and strong. This book is a manifesto calling on capitalists to heal the national that has given them so much.

Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
Summary:
Learn wisdom with 300 quotes by the three most famous classical Greek philosophers: Plato, Socrates and Aristotle.
Pupil of the great Plato, teacher of Alexander the Great, Aristotle is a massively influential figure in Western philosophy. Cicero described his literary style as "a river of gold". Modern ethics are based on his ideas about virtue; his writings literally encompassed all the scientific knowledge of the time and beyond, so much that many of his findings were still considered cutting-edge many century afterwards. Aristotle also shaped modern logic, and put his mark on all subsequent philosophy and theology. We have selected for you 100 of his most profound and influent quotes, so that you can see for yourself how modern these fundamental ideas still are. Nourish your daily life with Aristotle's ethics, strengthen your thoughts with his logic, and adopt his scientific ways for a clearer life.
Alfred North Whitehead once noted: "the safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato." Plato is indeed considered the most pivotal figure in the development of philosophy, along with his teacher, Socrates, and his student, Aristotle. But his writings are often light, fresh and funny; it was Plato who invented the dialogue in philosophy, which make a point very easy to follow and the occasion of various scenic arrangements. Plato is one of the most dazzling writers ever known; we have selected for you 100 of his best quotes, for you to find inspiration and get acquainted with this fundamental part of our culture.
Socrates is an enigmatic figure, known chiefly through the accounts of others like Plato and Aristophanes. His was one of the most brilliant intellects ever, and he devised what would later be called the Socratic method, which is a way of leading one's interlocutor to see his errors and contradictions through clever questioning before leading him to the truth. In ancient Athens, Socrates was widely known as a "gadfly", that is, an annoying insect buzzing at people's ears, because he kept questioning prejudices and contradictions; he was eventually tried and executed for "corrupting the minds of the youth". We have selected for you 100 of his best quotes, so you can decide whether this can be considered corruption, or an incredibly efficient way of learning to think for oneself.

Summary:
Sren Kierkegaard has long been considered the father of the philosophical movement known as Christian existentialism, which focuses on the living human being. In his major 1849 work, The Sickness unto Death, he takes listeners on a journey from the human self, its spirit, despair and sin, through to faith.
Kierkegaard championed the fact that the "single specific individual" was of most importance and never tired in his attempt to address the universally human concept of despair.
Anyone interested in the beginnings of the existential movement will want to explore Kierkegaard's radical and comprehensive analysis of human nature. In this seminal text, we see the origins of the existential movement in modern psychology, which has influenced a great number of social psychologists, cultural critics, and artists. Although Kierkegaard insisted that it was Christianity that was the sole cure for humanity's anxiety and despair, his work continues to be widely taught in universities across the world, including countries where other faith traditions dominate.

Length: 12 hrs and 56 mins
Language: English
Release date: 10-15-10
Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Genres: Nonfiction, Economics
Summary:
From table talk to farmers' markets, analyzing the cultural politics of what and how we eat.
This book explores the idea that table activities - the mealtime rituals of food preparation, serving, and dining - lay the foundation for a proper education on the value of civility, the importance of the common good, and what it means to be a good citizen. The arts of conversation and diplomatic speech are learned and practiced at tables, and a political history of food practices recasts thoughtfulness and generosity as virtues that enhance civil society and democracy. In our industrialized and profit-centered culture, however, foodwork is devalued and civility is eroding.
Looking at the field of American civility, Janet A. Flammang addresses the gendered responsibilities for foodwork's civilizing functions and argues that any formulation of "civil society" must consider food practices and the household. To allow space for practicing civility, generosity, and thoughtfulness through everyday foodwork, Americans must challenge the norms of unbridled consumerism, work-life balance, and domesticity and caregiving. Connecting political theory with the quotidian activities of the dinner table, Flammang discusses practical ideas from the "delicious revolution" and Slow Food movement to illustrate how civic activities are linked to foodwork, and she points to farmers' markets and gardens in communities, schools, and jails as sites for strengthening civil society and degendering foodwork.
The book is published by University of Illinois press.

The Meaning of Truth is a prime example of the philosophical movement of pragmatism, which was developed in the United States in the 19th century. Written in 1907 by one of the most ardent proponents of pragmatism, William James, this collection of 15 essays answers the critiques that pragmatist tradition had received. The Meaning of Truth constitutes a sequel to the previous book, James produced earlier in 1907, named Pragmatism which was based on the lectures given in Boston and at Columbia. An ingenious approach to the movement which James represents, a bright clarification of all the misunderstandings and an acute review on the lectures delivered by anti-pragmatists who doubted and speculated falsely over the meaning of truth. Summary:
Hegel viewed history as the growth of human consciousness, which is also the emergence of freedom. He thought that progress takes the form of the "dialectic", a historical process that moves us, through struggle and contradiction, to a higher stage of development. These ideas had a great impact on virtually all subsequent philosophy, particularly that of Marx, Kierkegaard, Sartre, and Dewey.
The Giants of Philosophy is a series of dramatic presentations, in understandable language, of the concerns, questions, interests, and overall world view of history's greatest philosophers. Special emphasis on clear and relevant explanations gives you a new arsenal of insights toward living a better life.

Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
Summary:
René Descartes (1596-1650) had a remarkably short working life, and his output was small, yet his contributions to philosophy and science have endured to the present day. He is perhaps best known for his statement "Cogito, ergo sum". By a mixture of "intuition" and "deduction" Descartes derived from the "cogito" principle first the existence of a material world.
But Descartes did not intend the metaphysics to stand apart from his scientific work, which included important investigations into physics, mathematics, psychology, and optics. In this book Tom Sorrell shows that Descartes was, above all, an advocate and practitioner of a new mathematical approach to physics, and that he developed his metaphysics to support his program in the sciences.

Summary:
"Most Eugenists are Euphemists. I mean merely that short words startle them, while long words soothe them. And they are utterly incapable of translating the one into the other, however obviously they mean the same thing. Say to them 'The persuasive and even coercive powers of the citizen should enable him to make sure that the burden of longevity in the previous generation does not become disproportionate and intolerable, especially to the females'; say this to them and they will sway slightly to and fro like babies sent to sleep in cradles. Say to them 'Murder your mother,' and they sit up quite suddenly. Yet the two sentences, in cold logic, are exactly the same."

Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
Summary:
In this powerful classic, the eminent Swiss philosopher Max Picard argues that though the flight from God is not a phenomenon unique to this age, man has nevertheless put himself and society in an extremely dangerous situation with the progressive secularization of Western culture. In the age of faith, Picard says, a man had to make a conscious decision to separate himself from the world of faith. Today, the world, not just the individual, is in flight, and men must extricate themselves from modernity and make a deliberate decision to find and affirm faith.
Gabriel Marcel says Picard is among the few who appear capable of redirecting the thinking elite toward an awakening of reason, without which it is impossible not to despair of mankind. The Flight from God is one of the most acute, and yet hopeful, analyses of modern man and society.

Summary:
Marcus Aurelius, Emperor of Rome from AD 161 until his death in 180, was the philosopher-king envisaged by Plato. A stoic philosopher, Marcus Aurelius wrote a series of spiritual exercises (now known as his meditations) while engaged on a series of border wars in the Danube region.
His writings, intended only for himself, reveal a mind of great humanity, humility, and insight. For over 2,000 years, these writings have inspired men and women to engage in the philosophical life, which involves two goals: to "know yourself" and then to ask, "What is the right way to live?"

Summary:
In this latest work, J. Ibeh Agbanyim, in collaboration with Raveen Arora, expands on the precepts of his previous works and addresses the idea of metacognition or mindfulness and the potential within all of us to affect the condition of our immediate social environments. By taking basic philosophical tenets ranging from the Book of James to Descartes, and by expanding on psychological ideas such as Jung's shadow aspect, Agbanyim and Arora attempt to show us ways in which we can eradicate our default triggers of unconscious biases and actually control our reactions in the moment. To think about how we think, and to recognize when we are slaves to preconception, are the keys to unlocking the door to a more tolerant and thoughtful universe. Holding up the belief systems of icons such as Mother Teresa of Calcutta and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Agbanyim and Arora define our various forms of ignorance and guide us to a healthier state of awareness and tolerance. This book is a poignant introduction to the idea of mindfulness and an eloquent beginning for those seeking talking points on behavioral change for societal advancement.

Rousseau's Discourse sets out to explore the origin of inequality among people, a journey that sees him trace the evolution of humans from the savage man to the foundations of civil society. With verve and passion, the philosopher argues that the birth of private property was the "beginning of evil". Throughout the book we are led to consider the development of language, reason, self-preservation, benevolence, pity, and law - all through the lens of perhaps the most original thinker of the 18th century.

Please note: This is an analysis and review of Meditations and not the original book.
The Roman Empire had many highs and lows throughout its existence, but none rivaled the Second Century AD. It was a time of relative peace and prosperity. During this time, there were five emperors, often called the "Five Good Emperors." The last of these emperors was Marcus Aurelius.
Marcus Aurelius is most known for his philosophical musings, especially one brand of philosophical thought called stoicism. This philosophy has as much application in today's world as it did in his age. Marcus put his philosophical musings to paper; this work is now famously known as the Meditations.

It can be a medium for technological and social change changes in fashion may signal economic and political shifts. Yet fashion can also trap us. We can be slaves to fashion if we feel trapped by the roles dictated by the clothes we wear, and we can be slaves to fashion, literally, as in the case of sweatshop workers who make most of the clothes we wear today. This audiobook explores the diverse and sometimes contradictory aspects of fashion in a series of lively, entertaining thoughtful essays from prominent philosophers and writers.

Summary:

Summary:
Philosophy for busy people. Listen to a succinct account of the philosophy of Foucault in just one hour.
The French philosopher Michel Foucault set about his task rather like a historian. After painstaking research, he concluded that knowledge and power were intimately related throughout history. He illustrated this central idea of his philosophy through studies of madness, sexuality, and discipline and punishment, arguing that there is no such thing as absolute truth, only different truths about reality at particular moments truths that fulfil the needs of power.
This audiobook is an expert account of Foucaults life and philosophical ideas entertainingly written and is above all easy listening. Also included are selections from Foucaults work, suggested further reading, and chronologies that place Foucault in the context of the broader scheme of philosophy.
