We Love Our Tribe - GTT02005 Jun 201700:32:36
Google News and Updates (2:42) Featured Content (9:44)

I have a 3rd student that took what I taught her about using G Suite, specifically from your episode #9 about Google forms and applied it to an "Entrepreneurial" venture! She created a Google form titled- "Eliana's Summer Pet Sitting and Mail Collection Service" then she had her mother post it to her friends to collect potential customers' information in a Google Sheet. As you can imagine, I was beaming with pride and thought you would like to hear about this real-life application being made at such a young age. This is proof that if we spend the time to train our kids to use these creative digital tools, they will do remarkable things!

I spent this school year teaching and developing a curriculum for an elementary version of a "Chrome Squad" for our building. My goal was to develop a resource to train kids to use G Suite using basic language that kids can understand. I have a "Kids Teaching Kids" type of program which has now evolved into my kids actually teaching our busy teachers to use Google tools as well.

I started with 10 kids and now have over 30 kids in our Chrome Squad. If you are interested, I can get you more information on my ebook coming out over the summer- "Chromebooks for kids- Training your Elementary Chrome Squad."

As a high school teacher, she redefined her English classroom as not only a place to learn about literature but also explore how technology is shaping the future of communications. She continues this exploration as an Education Services Consultant for AEA 267 in Iowa. There, her primary focus is on technology, literacy, and Authentic Intellectual Work. Shaelynn is a staff developer, literacy coach, and supports districts in the implementation of initiatives. She is a Google Certified Innovator and has training in Project Based Learning from the Buck Institute, Instructional Coaching, and Reading and Writing Workshop from Lucy Calkins.

In episode 10 you asked about ways for people to submit files through Google Forms if they are outside of your domain. Since that feature is limited to use within your domain, here is a different idea that districts may want to try if they need parents or other folks to be able to submit files which get automatically saved to your Drive...

An option to consider might be to use the "Save Emails and Attachments" add-on for Google Sheets:

You can see full details on how it works here:

Basically instead of using a Form, people would send an email to a specific address (I would suggest setting up one specifically for this purpose like dropbox@myschool.org). Emails sent to this address will trigger the add-on. Any attachments they send would be saved into a Google Drive folder you specify (which could be shared with the appropriate people for access).

Carrie Baughcum is a self-described inspiration junkie, idea spreader, and learning enthusiast! Most importantly, she is a passionate believer that all children can learn, we just need to find out how.

Baughcum is currently the 6th, 7th and 8th-grade Extended Resource Special Education class in Arlington Heights School District 25. In her classroom, Carrie integrates technology, creative thinking, a fearless attitude, the power of gamification and endless doodles to enable her students to access information and materials, enhance their learning and empower them to achieve things they never knew they could do or be a part of.

Carrie is also the mother of two daughters, 9 and 11 years old. At home, she encourages them to explore, learn and try anything their imagination can think up. She works hard to create and involve them in activities and experiences with exploration, creativity, problem-solving and making.

She shares her experiences from her classroom, adventures, experiences and time with her husband and daughters with other at conferences and at carriebaughcum.com.

    • Matt, I love your site! Need to spruce mine up. I like the new Google Sites (been using Classic Google Sites), but it seems a bit limited. What do you use for your Ditch That Textbook site? Did you design it yourself? I hope you do not mind, I will be presenting and sharing some of your blogs at our next teacher tech training in Feb! Keep up the good work, I find your passion for educational technology to be exuberant!

The new Google Sites allow for a beautiful design with easy click to add, drag and drop elements including Google files (Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms, Charts).

The new sites also allow creators to embed maps, YouTube videos, calendars on easy to manage and arranged pages. The themes are elegant to design easily and collaborate to let others edit a site.

Great a good entry point for newer users and those that don’t need fancy options when designing websites.

Ways to use Google Sites:
  • Websites for projects

Insta360 cameras (two fisheye lenses on each side). Connect the phone to the device via wifi. The phone is like the shutter. Stitches image together as one spherical image. Transfer back from the camera to phone: what to do. Retouch ($2 app) erases yourself out of the photo. Use Google Street View app: upload to google maps. Tiny Planet photography.

Kids write about aspects of the community. (Early standard in elementary.) Use camera: photograph police station, firehouse, city hall, school, etc. Publish to account. Use tour creator to write about the significance. They can’t write collaboratively but can take turns. (Fire department: didn’t know what certain things are. Study: what that is what does it do?) Tourist opportunity: where to enjoy an afternoon, historical locations, etc.

Digital Citizenship Resources for All Levels - GTP10503 Feb 202000:30:22

Before we start today’s show, we wanted to make a quick announcement. The podcast is undergoing a name change. It’s a small one, but an important one. We’ve decided to shorten the show’s name to be called the Google Teacher Podcast. We’ve heard from several of you that there are problems with including the word “tribe” in the name of the show. The last thing we want to do is create a show that is disrespectful or offensive to anyone -- especially in its name.

Don't Ditch That Tech! - GTT10427 Jan 202000:48:47

Google News and Updates

The Five Principles of Don’t Ditch That Tech

  1. Technology should be used to enhance students’ learning and should rely on evidence-based practices. There is no substitute for great teaching or great student-to-teacher relationships.
  2. Technology should help us work with content in interactive, meaningful ways.
  3. Technology should help teachers and students cross varied developmental levels.
  4. Technology should eventually empower students to be designers of their own learning. The goal is for students to become critical thinkers and life-long learners.
  5. Technology should promote reflection and metacognition.
