Season 6, Episode 1
In the world of music, where artists often find themselves defined by genre, Read Southall stands as a testament to the fluidity and freedom of musical expression. Known for his unique blend of rock and country, Read Southall recently sat down for an interview that reflects his journey, inspirations, and deep-rooted love for his hometown in southwest Oklahoma.
Read Southall's musical journey is one of growth, evolving over 15-16 years. From playing overseas to experiencing immense growth back home, Read's reflections on the road reveal a life filled with adventure, challenges, and blessings. The hecticness of touring hasn't slowed his passion; rather, it's fueled his creative process.
Read's experience playing at legendary venues like Red Rocks left a significant mark on him. He describes the overwhelming feeling of performing at Red Rocks, where the natural beauty and the filled seats create an unforgettable atmosphere. Read compares this experience to another remarkable venue, Humphreys on the Bay in San Diego, both offering their own unique charms.
When asked about his musical identity, Read embraces a dual nature. Much like Blackberry Smoke’s ethos of being “too rock for country and too country for rock,” Southall’s music finds a home everywhere, yet nowhere in particular. This versatility allows him to thrive in diverse musical settings.
Read's exposure to other artists like Steven Wilson Jr. and The Glorious Sons has also influenced his art. He speaks highly of these collaborations and how they have expanded his musical horizons, encouraging him to break the creative ceiling he once found himself under.
Despite the whirlwind of touring, Read Southall cherishes his connection to southwestern Oklahoma. He speaks fondly of the familiar sights, the feeling of coming home, and the grounded nature of the local community. His upbringing evidently shaped his character and, in turn, his music.
Read’s father played a pivotal role in encouraging his musical pursuits, advising him to seize opportunities and explore the world before settling down. This guidance is something Read hopes to pass on to his own daughter, who he wishes to raise with similar values in mind.
Currently, Read is on an anniversary tour, revisiting his first album from ten years ago. This tour has allowed him to reconnect with the early songs that first garnered attention, bridging the old with the new. The challenge remains in balancing fan favorites with new material, but Reed takes it in stride with humor and resilience.
As Read Southall gears up for future performances, including a potential local Six String Sorrow show, his appreciation for those who have supported his journey is palpable. From his family to his newfound fans, their unwavering support and connection to his music continue to motivate him.
Read’s music is more than just songs; it's a reflection of his journey, his roots, and the community that shaped him. With a new tour and album lined up, there's no doubt that Reed Southall’s journey is far from over—he's just getting started.
