Together they tell the story of William Argie, a physician assistant in New Hampshire who was married to Maureen, a social worker. This week Tina is once again joined by Justin Alves. Together they tell the story of Nikki Cappello, a critical care nurse who was married to private investigator Jim Cappello. Jim had suspected that his wife Nikki was attempting to conceal a substance use disorder and was planning an intervention when he was found dead in his home under suspicious circumstances. This week Nurse Keith is back to guest host a very special episode of Good Nurse Bad Nurse. In this episode, we will be bringing awareness to the problem of survivors of domestic abuse being criminalized. They open the show with the story of Brent Mott, a nurse from Merseyside, UK. Brent and his wife Kate had reached the end of their marriage and divorce loomed on the horizon. On the night of January 21, 2010, a physical altercation erupted between the couple. Brent claimed that he was returning home from an evening out when Kate, also a nurse, lunged at him with a peeler knife during an argument over the divorce proceedings. Brent alleged that his actions that followed stemmed from self-defense.  

The good nurse story is an update to a story we previously did on nurse practitioner Tracy McCarter. Tracy's community defense team reached out to us to let us know that while we mostly discussed correct information, there were some parts that we got wrong. They gave us a couple of articles that contain more accurate information for us to reference. 

Tracy had divorced her abusive husband and was living in her own apartment. After a night of drinking, he came to her apartment after locking himself out of his own. He became enraged at one point and was injured by a knife Tracy had picked up to defend herself against him. Tracy immediately got help and began trying to offer aid to him. McCarter was arrested and held without bail on Rikers Island for six months. On September 2020 her case was submitted before a grand jury by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. She was indicted for second-degree murder and manslaughter and released to home confinement and electronic monitoring where she still is trying to fight for her freedom. 

Tracy's daughter Ariel joins Tina and Nurse Keith to discuss Tracy's case and help shed some light on her mother's story and others' like hers.

Together, they tell you the tragic story of a shooting that took place at a plastic surgeon's office in 1997. On July 3, 1997, Dr. Michael Tavis and his office manager Kay Carter were gunned down in cold blood when they arrived to work that morning. Investigators would have to sift through multiple patients who had sued Dr. Tavis for negligence and malpractice in order to find the person who committed this heinous crime.

This week Tina is joined by Mark, her better half and head of all things IT for Good Nurse Bad Nurse. Together they tell the story of Dr. Infgolf Tuerk. A renowned urologist from Brighton, Massachusetts. For years, Tuerk was recognized for his contributions to medicine, worked as the chief of urology, was featured in videos and billboards promoting the hospital, and was loved by all his patients. But it all started to unravel in 2019 when he was investigated for Medicare fraud and fired from the hospital. As he began to spiral downward, his wife took the brunt of his rage and instability which ultimately led to a horrible tragedy. 

For the good nurse story, they talk about one of three US Congresswomen serving currently who are nurses. Congresswoman Cori Bush was elected in 2020 to serve Missouri’s 1st Congressional district. She is the first Black woman and first nurse to represent Missouri and the first woman to represent Missouri’s 1st Congressional District. She received a nursing degree from Lutheran University of Nursing in 2019 and spent the next decade serving the community as a nurse, ordained pastor, community organizer, and childcare worker.

This week Tina is joined by Annie Fulton of the educational nursing podcast Up My Nursing Game. Together they tell the incredibly disturbing story of a cardiovascular intensive care nurse who is accused of unthinkable crimes involving his patients. On February 8th, 2018, investigators were called to a meeting at a prominent heart hospital in Tyler, Texas. The hospital staff and their counsel had a list of seven patients who were involved in a series of incidents that took place between June 2017 and January 2018. Five patients suffered “significant injury” and two of them died. William George Davis, a registered nurse, was working in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit on all of the dates of these events. They close the show with a story about a nurse who has worked tirelessly to advance the nursing profession including groundbreaking research in the area of nurse-to-patient ratios.

Dr. Mikos was making between 250 – 300 thousand dollars a year, which was a couple hundred thousand dollars over what other podiatrists were making in the area. When the federal government started interviewing his patients, they discovered he had been billing for hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of procedures that seemed suspicious for a foot doctor. He was able to manipulate his patients into lying for him...all but one that is. A disabled and retired nurse refused to play his game and was all set to testify against the doctor until one night just days before the hearing, she was silenced forever. They close the show with the inspiring story of 75 doctors in South Florida who created a united front in order to emphasize the importance of being vaccinated.

Although the twin sisters were very close, they were also very different. Peggy was the beautiful, popular, homecoming queen type, and Betty opted for a wilder group of friends. Both married shortly after finishing high school, Peggy to a Baptist Choirmaster and Betty to a doctor she met in her nursing program. When Betty found her husband dead after a day of self-pampering, Betty and Peggy would find themselves accused of planning the murder. They close the show with a fascinating story of a famous jazz singer who left behind a very successful career singing and entertaining to go to nursing school.

One morning, Rhonda awoke and ran to the neighbor’s house screaming for help, saying her house was on fire and her husband was trapped inside. Jimmy used a wheelchair to get around due to a childhood illness that caused his legs to be extremely weak. What really happened that night?

This week, Nurse Leah joins Tina to tell the inexplicable story of a doctor and nurse couple whose wedding day went horribly wrong. From the outside looking in, Scott and Kelly seemed the perfect couple; the two worked together at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Indiana. She was a nurse and he an anesthesiologist. They had a beautiful home and had planned a wonderful wedding. Their coworkers, friends, and family happily attended the nuptials, which quickly deteriorated with the addition of alcohol. Scott and Kelly got into an argument over money. And after his card was declined at the reception venue, Scott took off without his new bride. The party followed them back to their home, but guests quickly left after an explosive argument broke out.

When investigators arrived, he told them how his beloved girlfriend had killed herself 24 hours earlier. Together they tell the story of a nurse, Dee Winzer, who was married to a man who became a paraplegic after being hit by a bus. Many years after getting married, Winzer was accused of poising her husband. However, the evidence was shaky at best, and Dee had no apparent motive, nor was she even home when the alleged poisoning happened.
