| Baker! Darnold! Indiana Jones! Aaron Rodgers?! The Art of the Quarterback Revival with Lindsay Rhodes | 24 oct. 2025 | 00:53:31 | |
Baker Mayfield is squarely in the MVP hunt. Sam Darnold's renaissance rages on in the Pacific Northwest. And raise your hand if you saw the Daniel Jones revival coming. Elsewhere, Carson Wentz's fairy tale story isn't so merry. Aaron Rodgers? It is... complicated. On this episode, we explore quarterback revivals (and a hell of a lot more) with the exceptional Lindsay Rhodes of SumerSports. There's a good chance you remember Lindsay from her days running the show at NFL Network. Now? She's helping fans see a totally different game on Sundays. At SumerSports, she analyzes the sport on a deeper level. Together, we try to solve some of the biggest questions this season... with a blend of analytics and human nature. Over at GoLongTD.com, your home for longform, we've got a feature LIVE on the state of the Buffalo Bills. I spent a day hunting for answers inside the locker room. Also, it's Jordan Love vs. Aaron Rodgers under the Sunday Night Football glow. Here's my column on what this game means for the new face of the Packers franchise. | Warren Moon on his trailblazing Hall of Fame career, power of belief and mentoring Tennessee Titans QB Cam Ward | 22 oct. 2025 | 00:45:49
The NFL wasn't ready for an African-American star quarterback in the late 70s. Warren Moon forced the league's hand. We chat with the legendary Pro Football Hall of Famer all about his unparalleled rise from to the University of Washington to the CFL to nine-time Pro Bowl passer. Moon previously hung out with Go Long subscribers on a Happy Hour. He's now opening up on the burden he carried as a star in college and the pros. Moon never really was able to enjoy all of his success and openly wonders how he would've performed with a clear mind. But today? His impact on the sport is obvious every Sunday. We also get into his mentorship of No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward. He's always giving the Titans quarterback advice. Which QBs does Moon like to watch today? Josh Allen is near the top of his list. | Ty & Bob Pod S4 E7: J.J. McCarthy Decision, Micah Parsons' obliteration, Bears go 4-2, Lions lower boom | 22 oct. 2025 | 02:03:45
Things are heating up. Once again, the NFC North is shaping into the league’s best division.A year ago, Sam Darnold was a major reason why… and the Minnesota Vikings decided to use their money elsewhere in the offseason. J.J. McCarthy’s ankle is still hurting. After Carson Wentz’s struggles vs. Philadelphia on Sunday, we can’t help but look back at the team’s monumental quarterback decision. Elsewhere, the Green Bay Packers’ all-in trade for Micah Parsons continues to look genius. He was a menace in the desert. Chicago’s run game was more of a freight train against the Saints. Ben Johnson’s off to a strong start. And that decimated Lions secondary edged Tampa Bay’s decimated receiving corps. Here’s your weekly two-hour dissection of everything NFC North with Pro Football Hall of Famer Bob McGinn. Paid subscribers to GoLongTD.com can access an ad-free version of this episode. | GL Pod: Tre Watson on NFL reality, Packers Outlook, Baker Mayfield & the return of his brother Christian | 15 oct. 2025 | 00:42:54
This has been a funky season, hasn’t it? No dominant team. Philadelphia’s fall. Baker Mayfield’s rise. Baltimore’s disappearance. And we’re really just getting started. Loved chatting this week with former pro linebacker Tre Watson. He spent the summer of 2019 in Miami Dolphins training camp before bouncing around the XFL, CFL, UFL and you may recognize Watson as the brother of Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson. Today, he’s coaching high school football, commentating college games for ESPN, raising two kids and co-hosting the Hitman’s Haven Podcast with his father. We hit on an array of topics here on the Go Long Pod.
Thank you for listening and subscribing, everyone. You can follow Watson on X @MDQue_33. Video and audio is available above. | Ty & Bob Pod S4 E6: Wild Bears MNF finish, Brian Branch's punch & Packers survive Cincy | 15 oct. 2025 | 01:41:49
Don’t look now but after a pair of 25-24 wins, the Chicago Bears are 3-2 with winnable games ahead. Here on the Ty & Bob Pod, we dissect the Monday night game in full. What’s sustainable? What isn’t? It wasn’t pretty. Issues remain. But Ben Johnson is proving he’s worth every nickel as this team’s head coach. Meanwhile, the Detroit Lions met their physical match in a hungry Kansas City Chiefs team. Safety Brian Branch — a player who enjoys crossing the line — will now pay the price for a terrible cheap shot, too. It was a rough second half for the Lions offense. Jared Goff may be in the MVP conversation, but something was missing in this game. Finally, we get to the Green Bay Packers fending off a pesky Bengals bunch. Josh Jacobs gives this team an element of physicality it’ll need when the games really count. The full 1-hour, 42-minute show is available to our paid subscribers. Our Bob McGinn, as always, guides you through his film review. Position to position, you’re guaranteed to learn something new. Thank you for supporting our independent journalism. | Substack Live: Talking Jayden Daniels & Caleb Williams with Ben Standig | 08 oct. 2025 | 00:56:31
The Washington Commanders and Chicago Bears take the Monday Night Football stage this week, a matchup featuring the No. 1 and No. 2 overall picks from the 2024 draft. We’ve explored both the Commanders and Bears at length here at Go Long. Loved having the opportunity to chat with Ben Standig who launched his new Substack “Last Man Standig” this fall. | Ty & Bob Pod: The Detroit Lions' ass-kicking tour rages on | 07 oct. 2025 | 01:40:29
Here’s your weekly dose of NFC North talk with my co-host Bob McGinn. The Lions steamrolled the hapless Cincinnati Bengals, 37-24, back in David Montgomery’s hometown. This one meant something special to the hard-charging back. Be it Jared Goff’s pinpoint precision, Jahmyr Gibbs’ jukes or Amon-Ra St. Brown’s brilliant route running, these Lions have A-level players all over the field. And the best of the bunch just may be the man the Lions sorely missed last season: Aidan Hutchinson. He saves his best for last in games. Elsewhere, the Minnesota Vikings inched past Cleveland across the pond. Justin Jefferson proved he’s QB-proof. McGinn dissects his special game. Finally, McGinn relives Brett Favre’s unforgettable debut at Lambeau Field vs. the Bengals. We appreciate you all listening, watching and sharing with a friend. ICYMI: * PATRIOT REIGN? | GL Pod: NFL Revolution with Michael Silver | 07 oct. 2025 | 01:17:31
Back in August, I caught up with my pal Michael Silver at Buffalo Bills training camp in Pittsford, NY. It’s always a treat. One of Silver’s stories invariably leads to another. And another. And another. And another. And this day, we were discussing the eccentric main characters of his book, “The Why is Everything: A Story of Football, Rivalry and Revolution.” Silver clearly got the goods. I couldn’t add it to Audible fast enough. Somehow, his book managed to exceed all expectations. Kyle Shanahan, Sean McVay, Matt LaFleur, Mike McDaniel and Raheem Morris drove the sport in a very new direction. Their innovations became commonplace. But to my surprise, Silver’s epic is far, far more than X ‘n Os. The personalities of all the above are fascinating. Thus, I couldn’t wait to welcome Silver onto the Go Long Pod here to discuss in full. Video and audio are above. You can also check this episode out on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, everywhere you pod. (Be sure to rate, review and share on the platform of your choosing!) Of course, we naturally weave the coaches into this 2025 season. McDaniel is feeling the heat in Miami. LaFleur is trying to get Green Bay over the hump. Most of all, do yourself a favor and work “The Why is Everything” into your library. The Amazon link is here. You’ll be left wanting more. Be sure to read all of Silver’s excellent work at The Athletic. He’s also on X @MikeSilver. Thanks, all. ICYMI… The New England Patriots are coming. But how exactly did the Bill Belichick Era turn to rubble? Why did Jerod Mayo fail? We look backward and forward in our latest longform piece at Go Long for paid subscribers. | Ty & Bob Pod S4 E4: Inside the 40-40 Scorigamai, Chicago's wacky win, Vikings issues multiply & Lions O-Line Watch | 30 sept. 2025 | 01:55:52
What a week it was in the NFC North. Micah Parsons’ grand return to Dallas had no fairy tale ending. Only questions for that Packers defense… and special teams. (Yikes.) The good news? Romeo Doubs, profiled here, took charge. It wasn’t pretty in Las Vegas. Ben Johnson lost his cool, too. But Caleb Williams’ late drive was enough. Are the skies clearing up for injury-riddled Chicago? J.J. McCarthy returns to practice soon. However, Minnesota’s issues run deeper than the quarterback position at the moment. Harrison Smith is still going strong, but for how long? Meanwhile, Detroit rolls along vs. offensively challenged Cleveland. We get into everything with Hall of Fame scribe Bob McGinn. Time stamps are below. And thank you for sharing Go Long with a friend. * Packers-Cowboys: 12:28 * Bears-Raiders: 46:31 * Vikings-Steelers: 1:09:13 * Lions-Browns: 1:29:41 Monday Column, icymi. | GL Pod: Matt Schaub on the NFLPA's fight ahead | 30 sept. 2025 | 00:37:57
Leverage. Leverage. Leverage. In sum, that is what matters most for the NFL’s players ahead of the next round of CBA negotiations with owners. And right here at Go Long, former NFL quarterback Matt Schaub announced his candidacy to run as Executive Direction of the NFLPA. In exceptional detail, he lays out his plan for the players. I cannot recommend reading his arguments enough. Here on the Go Long Pod, we continue the conversation. Schaub could bring clear, concise, bold direction to a group that sorely needs leadership. Above all, his master plan for leverage is something NFL players have never attempted before: creating their own league. One thing’s for certain. The NFL itself is piecing together plans as we speak. You can watch/listen to our chat above or anywhere you pod, including Apple, Spotify and YouTube. Be sure to follow Schaub on X. At the end of our conversation, we also hit on a few current NFL topics. Did Michael Penix Jr. turn the corner? Also, what makes Kyle Shanahan unique? Schaub worked with the 49ers head man back with the Houston Texans. Thanks, all. We appreciate you rating, reviewing, sharing the podcast with a friend. | Happy Hour Replay: Allen Robinson | 26 sept. 2025 | 00:37:35
Happy Valley… to Jacksonville… to Chicago… to several other stops at the tail-end, Allen Robinson experienced a little bit of everything as an NFL wide receiver. Poor QB play. Super Bowl expectations. A torn ACL. 1,000-yard seasons. Contract disputes. Revis Island. Stafford ‘n Goff. There’s a lot to get into and the longtime NFL wide receiver is much obliged. We welcomed Robinson onto our latest Zoom Happy Hour at Go Long this week, and he didn’t disappoint. Thanks to all who joined, and be sure to keep an eye out for future hangouts. | GL Pod: On the scouting trail with John Middlekauff | 15 sept. 2025 | 00:56:56
Perhaps it’s not time for teams to call 9-1-1, but there’s a stench in the air. A few houses are starting to burn. Two weeks into this 2025 NFL Season, I thought we should catch up with the sharp John Middlekauff of the “3 and Out” podcast on The Volume network. Middlekauff is a former scout with the Philadelphia Eagles and always brings a fresh perspective on his show. Here on the Go Long Pod, we naturally dig into the art of scouting — is there a right way to do it? — and riff on a myriad of NFL topics: Cincinnati’s QB conundrum, why Anthony Richardson failed, the traits to look for in a young quarterback, The Honey Badger and what qualifies as a red flag, Ryan Poles’ Chicago Bears gone wrong and Patrick Mahomes. For the first time in his career, Mahomes has lost two games in a row. Many are saying it’s time to PANIC. We both had a much different take on his performance in the Chiefs’ 20-17 loss to Philadelphia. | GL Pod: Let's discuss the '24 Quarterback Class with Mike Tanier | 11 sept. 2025 | 01:05:47
All respective NFL franchises placed their bets the spring of 2024. Some teams did more homework than others. And in Year 2 of a quarterback’s development, major progress is expected. Each week, all season long, I’ll be joined by a new guest to dissect what we see on Sunday and look ahead. First up: Mike Tanier of Too Deep Zone. Mike always brings an insightful ‘n entertaining flair to his analysis. We previously talked about the best QBs in NFL history on the Go Long Pod. In the aftermath of our Bears series, it only makes sense that we get into everything Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, J.J. McCarthy, Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. Where are these careers headed? Thanks to all who’ve upgraded to a paid subscription and shared Go Long with a friend. | GL Pod: It's J.J. McCarthy Time in Minnesota | 21 août 2025 | 00:49:37
He’s the only quarterback from the 2024 class who didn’t see the field as a rookie. Finally, the wait is over. J.J. McCarthy is the starting quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings, and this is fairly unprecedented terrain. The Michigan product takes over a 14-win team with clear Super Bowl aspirations. GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O’Connell spent big bucks on both lines this past offseason after seeing their team get pushed around by Detroit and the L.A. Rams to finish last season. Sam Darnold regressed sharply in both games and the veteran who threw for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns was allowed to walk in free agency. Not many teams would let a quarterback with those numbers exit the building. So, how good is J.J. McCarthy? We get plenty of insight from Matthew Coller of Purple Insider. | GL Pod: Why James Cook is worth the money for the Buffalo Bills, with Jon Scott of WGRZ | 14 août 2025 | 00:53:04
And just like that, Brandon Beane has locked in his core: Khalil Shakir, Christian Benford, Greg Rousseau, Terrel Bernard and, now, James Cook all inked contract extensions this offseason. Tip of the hat to Terry Pegula for spending this kind of money. The Buffalo Bills know the Super Bowl window is open and wanted to secure their own. Cook’s contract stalemate got testy at the end, but it was always smart for these two sides to meet in the middle. It sends a strong message in the locker room, too. To discuss it all, let’s welcome Jon Scott from WGRZ onto the Go Long Pod. * We analyze Cook’s deal, Cook’s value and why he’s worth a four-year, $46 million contract even as a two-down player. * Will Keon Coleman elevate his game in 2025? The Bills are counting on the wide receiver taking a giant step. He’s had an interesting summer. * Brandon Beane is maximizing Josh Allen’s prime. It just looks different. * Which player surprised Jon most at St. John Fisher? I didn’t see this player’s name coming. * Our causes for concern this season. Cole Bishop’s health is near the top of that list. The Bills’ safety play must improve when a January date with Patrick Mahomes is inevitable. | GL Pod: Tom Silverstein on why the time to strike is now for the Green Bay Packers | 08 août 2025 | 00:38:32
Always love talking ball with my former colleague at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal: longtime beat man, Tom Silverstein. Nobody covers the team beter than “Spoon,” and you can read all of his work right here. Here on the Go Long Podcast, we get updates and analysis on everything Packers… * Jordan Love enters Year 3 as the starter. How is he adjusting his game? The Packers quarterback opened up on how the 2024 injuries affected his running. One year ago, we billed him a future all-time great. It’s a massive season for the $220 million quarterback. * How will rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden factor into the offense? Silverstein believes Matt LaFleur sees shades of Deebo Samuel in Savion Williams, too. * Who leads the Packers in receiving this season? Our friend’s answer may surprise you. * This roster constructed by GM Brian Gutekunst is strong. This is a year-in, year-out playoff team. But who are the A-to-A+ players that get Green Bay to a Super Bowl? * Matt LaFleur is entering his seventh season. As analyzed in the aftermath of his latest playoff loss, it’s not easy for coaches this deep into a tenure with a win to go all the way. His job’s safe but the pressure’s always high at 1265 Lombardi Ave. For those asking, YES, the “Ty & Bob Pod” with Bob McGinn will return for another season. Cannot wait. I’ll share details as we close in on the season. Enjoy. | GL Pod: Which NFL teams shock the world in 2025? A chat with SI's Conor Orr... | 29 juil. 2025 | 00:48:19
Always a joy to welcome on one of my best friends from the college days at Syracuse: Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated. Great writer. Better father. Loved our conversation on all the above. Each NFL season, there’s a team that sneaks up on everyone. Nobody outside of Dan Quinn’s staff expected the Washington Commanders to reach the NFC title game in 2024. Who goes on an unexpected run in 2025? We discuss. I’m guessing my NFC pick won’t come as a shock. Feel free to offer your surprise teams in the comments, too. | GL Pod: Cleveland Browns Quarterback Roulette with Zac Jackson of The Athletic | 22 juil. 2025 | 00:43:21
Joe Flacco or Kenny Pickett? Dillon Gabriel or Shedeur Sanders? The Cleveland Browns are finally freeing themselves of the Deshaun Watson disaster this 2025 season, and the quarterback room has a chance to be more fun than you think. Our season preview features roll along this week with a close look at Grant Delpit and the Browns’ road map to kick ass. So here on the Go Long Pod, let’s chat with Browns beat writer Zac Jackson of The Athletic and host of “Zac Jackson and Friends” podcast. We get a full sense for the state of the Browns in this bareknuckle AFC North. Cleveland would love to become an ornery, violent operation. And after getting outscored by 177 points last season, there are many starters playing with one year left on their deals. Motivation should not be a problem. | GL Pod: FITZMAGIC! | 18 juil. 2025 | 00:42:33
Odds are there’s someone in your life who knows next to nothing about the NFL — but they know Ryan Fitzpatrick. Especially in Buffalo. That’s the power of “Fitzmagic.” The former seventh-round pick from Harvard played for nine different teams through a wildly entertaining 17-year career. There were highs. There were lows. And there was one very specific turning point when Fitz realized he’s got to have fun playing this sport. As you can imagine, Fitzpatrick brings the goods whether we’re reliving his pulsating 2011 win over the New England Patriots, Fred Jackson wrestling teammates inside the locker room, raising seven kids as a nomadic quarterback and… chest hair. And back hair. Because, hell, why not? Fitz sees 2025 as the year for the Bills and offers very rare perspective on what makes Josh Allen different. Video and audio is available above. As always, be on the lookout for words. I’ll transcribe our conversation for those who’d prefer to read. Thanks, everyone. Our 2025 NFL Season Preview features are rollin’ with a look at Dalton Kincaid. The Buffalo Bills tight end opens up on the AFC Championship, living at One Bills Drive all offseason and how he psychologically moved on. A few words from Micah Hyde went a long way. | Substack Live: Inside the Cincinnati Bengals' blurred lines of business and football, with Paul Dehner Jr. | 15 juil. 2025 | 00:28:33
Joe Burrow is 100 percent correct: the Super Bowl window is always open as long as he is the starting quarterback. Now, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins are secured long term. A new defensive coordinator should help young talent grow on that side of the ball. We’ve explored the team’s brilliant offensive mind on staff, too. Dan Pitcher is a wizard and should be an NFL head coach in 2026. So, why do things still feel… off? The business has a way of spilling over to the football field in Cincinnati. The organization is butting heads with its top draft pick (Shemar Stewart) and the NFL’s reigning sack king (Trey Hendrickson) still wants a new deal. At 30, he knows the time is now to cash in. To dissect it all, we place a Substack Live call to our friend Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic and The Growler Podcast. He’s the best of the best on this beat. In fact, our chat with Paul back in March was one of our most-watched episodes of the year. A lot has happened since then. This team has more issues to sort through, but there’s a path toward success… even on defense. Video and audio is accessible above. | GL Pod: Is THIS the year the Buffalo Bills finally slay the Kansas City Chiefs? A chat with Jay Skurski. | 15 juil. 2025 | 01:02:58
They’re bound to meet again. Bills. Chiefs. Four out of the last five postseasons, they’ve collided. And each winter, of course, Patrick Mahomes has the right stuff. This offseason — more than any other — GM Brandon Beane overhauled the defense. As training camps across the NFL close in, let’s welcome back a recurring guest: Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News. The worst thing anyone can do is doubt The Dad Bod. Mahomes is already an all-timer. But there are signs that maybe… possibly… finally… the Bills are able to take down their tormenter. On paper, this renovated defense should give Sean McDermott options aplenty. We analyze in full. Also on the GL Pod, we discuss the subject of our most recent feature story: Dalton Kincaid. Do not be surprised if Kincaid is a top 5 tight end in Year 3. He took his work to a different level right at One Bills Drive. Either way, Josh Allen needs a go-to guy in the playoffs. Finally, we wrap up with AFC East talk. Who’s the top challenger — Miami or New England? Be sure to follow Jay on social and read all of his excellent work at The Buffalo News. You can access video and audio of this episode above, as well as on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, everywhere you pod. Be sure to rate, review, comment, engage however you’d like. Most of all, I greatly appreciate everyone who has upgraded to a paid subscription to read our story on Kincaid. He was remarkably candid on that fourth and 5 play and everything that came next. | Substack Live: Inside the Dallas Cowboys' vicious cycle — and an NFC East preview — with Bob Sturm | 11 juil. 2025 | 01:07:26
For 30 years, the Dallas Cowboys were a shining city on a hill. Titles galore. Landy to Jimmy. The next 30 years? Well, there’s technically been shine. This is the richest sports franchise in the world. But this is also the only team in the NFC that hasn’t reached the conference title game. We’ve examined the organizational rot, Jerry’s World and most recently welcomed ex-Cowboys wideout Brice Butler onto the Go Long Pod for his sharp insight (podcast and words). Now, let’s bring on an expert who’s covered this team through all the turbulence: the excellent Bob Sturm. Be sure to work “The Sturm Stack” into your reading. He’s all over Dallas sports. Together, we try to make sense of the Cowboys’ way of doing business, examine the Jason Garrett & Mike McCarthy eras and look ahead to 2025. Is anyone catching those Howie Roseman-constructed Philadelphia Eagles? Go Long is powered by you. Thank you for joining our community of readers around the world. | GL Pod: Brice Butler unlocks the door to Jerry's World and these maddening Dallas Cowboys | 10 juil. 2025 | 01:11:21
It’s no coincidence the Dallas Cowboys are now the only team that hasn’t reached the NFC Championship Game since 1995. We’ve tried to make sense of this wacky team before. Those inside the front office detailed the cycle of organizational rot most recently right here. Also, here’s a big-picture view of Jerry’s World from 2021. On the Go Long Pod, I catch up with one former player who’s unafraid to take you through those spooky hallways at The Star. Warning: It’s not pretty. Wide receiver Brice Butler spent four of his pro seasons in Dallas. He’s seen the good times up close. His 2016 team could’ve won it all. He’s seen exactly why Jerry Jones’ team always falls short, too. Video and audio of our conversation is above. You can also access the Go Long Pod on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, wherever you pod. Here’s the transcript: A handful of topics discussed… * The joys of fatherhood. * Why Butler got emotional thinking back to his NFL exit. It’s never easy to say goodbye. * Football is cutthroat. Most all businesses outside of those white lines are not. This tends to get Butler (and many others) into trouble. And yet? Imagine our society if feelings took a backseat to productivity. * Reliving the moment Dak Prescott took over for Tony Romo and became the face of the Dallas Cowboys. (Butler was in the huddle.) * One moment Dak’s the anonymous backup at a club who girls don’t care about at all. The next? He’s the richest man in the sport. Butler saw the transformation. * The major difference between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys. * Why Butler genuinely believes that winning games is not a priority for this franchise. * Seeing Jones emasculate the head coach, Jason Garrett, right in front of the team. * Is there any hope for the Cowboys on the horizon? Butler loves Prescott but also fears it really doesn’t matter how well the QB plays. He doesn’t believe Patrick Mahomes would win a ring here. A ton of insight and a ton of laughs were had through this hour-plus. Be sure to follow Butler across the socials. He’s usually on a golf course over at X and Instagram. Feel free to share with a friend and, hey, it’s a perfect time for those on our free mailing list to upgrade. Our 2025 NFL Season Preview features will launch Friday AM. Paid subscribers can access them all. More on the Cowboys. And we explore the defending champs. This is a public episode. | GL Pod: Khari Blasingame and the art of making yourself indispensable | 25 juin 2025 | 00:53:36
He was ready to coast into retirement. This is often how it ends for players. Cut loose by a floundering Chicago Bears team, Khari Blasingame had his second baby due soon and was visiting his wife’s family in South Carolina. Mentally, he was ready to move on. The NFL appeared ready to move on from him. And then his agent, Blake Baratz, called: “Hey man, you want to go win a ring with Philly?” Blasingame carved out a niche on the Philadelphia Eagles and experienced Super Bowl glory inside the Superdome. The last 20 years, we’ve been told the fullback is dying. True, the days of Lorenzo Neal mowing down linebackers are over. But there’s still a way to make a living in pro football playing this position. Blasingame is living proof. He switched from safety to running back in college, latched on as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Vikings in 2019, and then spent time with the Tennessee Titans and Chicago Bears before his capstone ‘25 in Philadelphia. Early on, Blasingame accepted the fact that he’d need to excel on special teams. Not many players do. Above all, his ability to adapt, evolve and thrive can apply to all listeners in all walks of life. You’ll enjoy this conversation. Here on the Go Long Pod, we explore countless topics. * His rise, and how Blasingame naturally gravitated toward the fullback position. * He originally planned to be a doctor at Vanderbilt. One Calculus class helped change his mind and his football career took off. * Life in Chicago vs. Life in Philadelphia. They are not the same! * Are you also a Dad worried about screens dominating the world your kids are growing into? We try to make sense of these digital times. * The traits that made the 2025 Eagles truly unique. * Why he believes Jalen Carter will be in the Hall of Fame. * His future. Blasingame — a finance junkie — would love to help pro athletes learn how to deal with money. Full video and audio is above. | Substack Live: Is this the year the Atlanta Falcons (finally) rise up? A chat with Justin Felder... | 18 juin 2025 | 00:37:18
There’s not another general manager in the sport quite like Terry Fontenot. At Go Long, the Falcons GM guides you through all of his colossal decisions the last two years, and he knows the time to win is now. He doesn’t care what anybody thinks, either. As Fontenot says: “If you’re worried about pleasing everybody, you’re going to be a failure.” He most certainly is not afraid. Our entire piece is available to paid subscribers: On Substack Live, I continued the conversation with our good friend Justin Felder of Fox 5 Atlanta. | GL Pod: Tiki Barber on the present — and future — of the New York Giants | 11 juin 2025 | 00:45:58
The New York Giants needed to get the quarterback position right this offseason. And yet, this wasn’t exactly the year to be quarterback hunting. Options were limited. Now that the dust has settled, can GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll sell a vision to ownership? I caught up with one of the franchise’s all-timers — running back Tiki Barber — on the Go Long Pod this week to learn more. After inking Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston in free agency, the Giants stuck at No. 3 overall to take perhaps the best player in the draft (Abdul Carter), before then managing to jump back into the first round for Ole Miss passer Jaxson Dart. This division is loaded, but there are signs of hope on this roster. Barber, who calls the team “unwatchable” a year ago, believes the Giants can find an identity. He recently spoke to the team, too. Video and audio of our chat are both available above, and you can also access the Go Long Pod over at Apple, Spotify and everywhere you pod. After diving into Barber’s life a while back, we stick to the Giants of today on this episode. Here’s the written transcript if preferred. Barber hits on everything Giants. A handful of topics discussed…. * Life post-Saquon. * The “juggernaut” Philadelphia Eagles. Barber can’t help but love what his arch-nemesis has created. * What went wrong for Daniel Jones? * What can go right for Jaxson Dart? Personalities — finally — have a chance to match. * Joe Schoen, Brian Daboll and the identity both are trying to create for this team. * The moment Barber started to believe in rookie Eli Manning. And of course, you can always catch Barber’s analysis in the New York sports media scene. He co-hosts “Evan and Tiki” on WFAN. Go Long is completely independent. | Substack Live: Is all A-OK between James Cook and the Buffalo Bills? | 10 juin 2025 | 00:18:12
James Cook likes his money. He made that much clear with his actions and words at mandatory minicamp Tuesday. It sounds like he’ll be good to go for training camp, too. And yet, the Buffalo Bills’ starting back would like to get paid. Obviously. Will GM Brandon Beane — who explained his reasoning in our 1 on 1 — be inclined to strike a deal with Cook’s camp? | GL Pod: Browns/Vikings great Leroy Hoard on 90s Football, Ninth Ward life, Concussion Aftermath, Bill Belichick | 05 juin 2025 | 01:08:03
Through a full decade of pro football — 1990 to 1999 — Leroy Hoard specialized in zapping the will to fight from defenders. His goal? Make you quit by the fourth quarter. The sight of No. 33 in Cleveland and No. 44 in Minnesota barreling through defenses helped define this glory era of the sport itself. Hoard ran with power, speed, attitude. And oh my, he has stories to share. The former NFL running back hangs out on the Go Long Pod to relive it all. During a Pro Bowl season in 1994, Hoard led the Browns to the playoffs with 1,335 total yards and nine touchdowns. Of course, he also remembers the scene in ‘95 when the Browns played their final games at Municipal Stadium. He’d later resurrect his career with the high-flying Vikings of the late 90s. Full audio and video is above, and available within your Apple and Spotify feeds. I’ll share the written transcript later today. Topics include… * Life as a running back in the 1990s, from the old AFC Central to the NFC Central. * Growing up in New Orleans’ dangerous Ninth Ward. * The worst collision of his football life. * The time the Browns moved from Cleveland to Baltimore. * The time he arrived in Minnesota on a Tuesday, started on Sunday and it felt like living in China. * Concussions. Pain. Life has been hard for Hoard since he retired. Did he have suicidal thoughts? Was he depressed? Hoard explains this empty feeling. * Finding purpose as a radio commentator today at 560 WQAM in South Florida. * Bill Belichick. His former coach in Cleveland has made offseason waves. We get Hoard’s thoughts. * Analysis on the Browns today, Kevin Stefanski and the failed Deshaun Watson experiment. Thank you for fueling our independent journalism here at Go Long and sharing with a friend. Hoard previously hung out with us back in November 2021 if you’d like to check out that conversation, too. | Substack Live: Talkin' Steelers, Tomlin, Rodgers with Brian Batko of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette | 30 mai 2025 | 00:43:36
We don’t necessarily need to shape-shift into flies on the wall. Mike Tomlin and Aaron Rodgers surely had an excellent meeting earlier this offseason in Pittsburgh, Pa. There’s a very good chance that both head coach and quarterback view this looming partnership as a chance to stick it to the doubters and reclaim control of their narratives. Tomlin hasn’t won a playoff game since the 2016 season, albeit with teams that never finish with a losing record. Rodgers hasn’t been a good quarterback in four years. How did the Steelers get here? How will this all end? On this week’s Substack Live at Go Long, I chat with Brian Batko of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Always love seeing Brian on our trips to Steelers Country. He offers a sharp perspective on everything Tomlin and Rodgers. Yes, those Steelers of 2019 fought like hell — it was fun following that group for a B/R feature — but those wins with “The Duck” ‘n co. present a bitter counterfactural. We explore. As a reminder, you can always join our Substack Live videos by downloading the app here and turning notifications on. I’ll also schedule episodes ahead of time so you can add them into your calendar. | GL Pod: The Unrelenting Joy of Joe DeLamielleure | 23 mai 2025 | 00:46:21
A decade ago, we met in the lobby of a Canton, Ohio hotel ahead of the Pro Football Hall of Fame inductions. I’ll never forget Joe DeLamielleure — NFL great — offering this total stranger a seat. Before we knew it, an hour passed by. That’s “Joe D.” He’s 74 years old now, which is easily 90+ in Football Years for a man who absorbed endless head slaps as an NFL lineman in the lawless 1970s. Yet, you’d never tell. His mind is extremely sharp… and there’s good reason for that. DeLamielleure’s day-to-day life supplies real hope to all former players worried about their concussions leading to dark days. Loved catching up again with the man who made six Pro Bowls through a 13-year career with the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns. Audio of our chat is above, and available on Apple, Spotify, everywhere you pod. Here’s the written transcript: Topics discussed… * Joe DeLamielleure and Joe Ferguson were the first two players to ever walk into Rich Stadium. This 2025 season will mark the Bills’ final season in this bowl. * What kind of teammate was O.J. Simpson? * Remarkably, O.J. wasn’t Joe D’s only friend who killed somebody. * How his “Electric Company” offensive line followed Vince Lombardi’s Packers blueprint with the help of Jim Ringo. * A pair of Tom Dempsey stories — DeLamielleure’s comedic timing was spot on. * In 2013, a doctor told him he’s living with CTE. Unlike fellow NFL lineman Mike Webster — whose life took a very haunting turn due to head trauma — DeLamielleure feels strong as ever in 2025. Both mentally and physically. How is this possible? * Why Joe D believes current Bills quarterback Josh Allen is “one in a million.” * Don’t forget about those Browns days. DeLamielleure helped me out with the Ozzie Newsome chapter in “Blood and Guts” and again looks back to his crushing Red Right 88 playoff loss against the Oakland Raiders. (Damn those scuba gloves!) * A story about his father you will not want to miss. Thank you for listening, subscribing and sharing Go Long with a friend. | Substack Live: In Manning, Brees, Rodgers Super Bowl runs, Buffalo Bills (and all teams) can find clues | 21 mai 2025 | 00:40:38
You nailed it. You found a star at the most important position in sports: Quarterback. Now, what? That’s the question Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane has been wrestling with since correcting choosing Josh Allen over Josh Rosen. This spring, he pumped a slew of defensive resources into the roster. As we write this week, the plan can work. There’s logic to follow. Not only can we look back at the Philadelphia Eagles’ boa-constriction of a Super Bowl win in February — the playoff runs of Hall of Fame Super Bowl champs past supply plenty of clues. Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers all needed a boost. We discuss on this week’s Substack Live video. To join future shows, download the app here. | GL Pod: Joe Theismann, Washington Redskins legend, on why mental toughness is 'like tempering a sword' | 15 mai 2025 | 00:36:53
He wasn’t tall. He wasn’t big. There wasn’t anything imposing about this athlete physically. Joe Theismann was doubted through high school, college, right into his CFL and NFL days. But the man never lacked bravado. This quarterback was fueled by true belief. Here on the Go Long Pod, I chatted with the Washington Redskins great at length about his truly unique rise from South River, N.J. to Heisman Trophy runner-up, College Football Hall of Famer, 1982 Super Bowl Champion and 1983 NFL MVP. Theismann was as tough as nails, too, in starting 163 straight games — quite a feat considering his prison-rules era of football. Topics discussed include… * One brutal, tough-love lesson from his father. * How he won the job at Notre Dame. Upon arrival in South Bend, Theismann was one of 13 quarterbacks. * The day he pissed off Don Shula. * Power of “mental toughness.” Call it spite or pride — Theismann says he was obsessed with proving people wrong. * How he started 163 straight games. Theismann recalls the time Ted Hendrickson dropped him on his head. * What made his 1983 Redskins historic to this day. * Why he believes in Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels. Video and audio is available above. You can also catch this episode on Apple, Spotify, YouTube and everywhere you pod. Thank you for fueling everything here at Go Long. | Substack Live: Trey Hendrickson Drama! What now for the Cincinnati Bengals? | 14 mai 2025 | 00:26:06
What a bizarre week in Cincinnati. Trey Hendrickson is not happy with his superiors, and he let everyone know. We discuss on this week’s Substack Live. Yes, the Bengals might’ve missed a golden opportunity to trade their star defensive end in March. But at this point? They can prove its a new day by paying the man and gunning for a Super Bowl title. | Substack Live: George Pickens trade fallout, Howie Roseman's mastery, Buffalo Bills talk with Matt Lombardo | 09 mai 2025 | 00:40:38
Greetings! We’ve got another Substack Live for you here at Go Long. I was joined by Matt Lombardo of “Between the Hashmarks.” Be sure to check out his site. Matt’s always talking to coaches and execs around the NFL. Through this 40-minute chat, we hit on the George Pickens trade (what it means for both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys), why Howie Roseman is a step ahead of everyone else and Brandon Beane’s big move on defense. The Buffalo Bills GM has a plan, and he’s sticking to it. (Our Q&A for Go Long subscribers, icymi.) Want to join future Substack Live videos? | Substack Live: Let’s wrap up the 2025 NFL Draft | 05 mai 2025 | 00:36:37
Good afternoon! As always, thank you to everyone for hanging out on Substack Live. Want to join a future chat? Download the app and flip notifications on. The 2025 NFL Draft is behind us, so let’s discuss. We touch on a handful of topics here, including the New York Giants’ pursuit of ass-kickers, the New Orleans Saints finally wising up, the Arizona Cardinals’ sneaky-good draft and why those New England Patriots are trending up. Miss our Q&A with Buffalo Bills GM Brandon Beane? It’s available here. Go Long is hitting the road this week for more longform. Our journalism is only possible because of you. Appreciate all who’ve joined our community of readers from around the world. This is a public episode. | GL Pod: State of the AFC East with Phil Perry... how high will the New England Patriots climb? | 30 avr. 2025 | 01:20:32
Roles have reversed. After a generation of the New England Patriots (and Tom Brady) tormenting the Buffalo Bills, the AFC East has been running through Western New York five straight years. Not even those Jim Kelly-, Thurman Thomas-, Bruce Smith-, Andre Reed-powered Super Bowl teams earned five straight division crowns. Yet, there’s renewed hope in Foxborough. Mike Vrabel knows exactly what he wants on this roster and has rapidly, dramatically created a new identity. Games against his Patriots promise to be rock fights. With free agency and the draft complete, it’s a perfect time for a joint podcast with our good friend, the excellent Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston and The Next Pats Podcast. We talk Bills… and my 1 on 1 with GM Brandon Beane that’ll be available to subscribers very soon. (We got into everything.) We talk Patriots… will Drake Maye follow the Josh Allen trajectory? I really enjoyed this conversation, right on through our psychological breakdown of Bill Belichick. | GL Pod: Analyzing the 2025 Buffalo Bills draft with Jay Skurski | 28 avr. 2025 | 00:55:27
On one hand, the Buffalo Bills’ defense has been a mess at the worst possible moments. On the other, Super Bowl teams tell us repeatedly that it pays to load up on weaponry. I wrote about the Bills’ defense-heavy draft here, icymi. Now, let’s bring on old friend Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News. Today’s episode of the Go Long Pod is available here — video and audio above — as well as Apple, Spotify, everywhere you pod. Thank you for listening and sharing. (Good news: The same day we recorded this, a few of those potholes were filled on Boston State Road.) ICYMI: * NFC North Rounds 2-3 Analysis: Which surprising pick will pay off? * NFC North Round 1 Analysis: The Green Bay Packers (finally) draft a WR early * A defining draft for the New York Giants This is a public episode. | Substack Live: Max Hairston and the Buffalo Bills' need for Round 1 speed with WGRZ's Jon Scott | 25 avr. 2025 | 00:16:08
At No. 30 overall, the Buffalo Bills selected Kentucky cornerback Max Hairston. His services are most certainly required. This is a defense in need of a corner capable of sticking with receivers step for step in the playoffs. Nobody ran faster than Hairston at the NFL Combine, and scouts describe him as mentally tough — “a cocky little guy” who’s “electric as far as change of direction, movement, speed.” The 5-foot-11, 183-pounder had 89 tackles, six interceptions, three pick-sixes and 10 passes defensed in 20 games the last two seasons. He’s got limitations physically. The Bills needed to step outside of their comfort zone with this pick and we’ll explore more in full later. Here’s a quick chat on Substack Live with WGRZ’s Jon Scott into the wee hours at One Bills Drive. To join future live videos, be sure to download the app and flip notifications on. Thanks, all. | Substack Live: Can the New York Giants generate hope this week? A chat with Joe Praino. | 23 avr. 2025 | 00:33:33
Good morn! Happy NFL Draft Eve, everyone. There’s a ton at stake for all teams, but nobody needs to nail the draft quite like the New York Giants. To discuss, I recorded a Substack Live with noted comedian (and long-suffering Giants fan) Joe Praino. He runs his own Substack — “Miscellaneous” — and is the co-host of the “Dirty Sports” podcast. I first got to know Joe when he produced the Adam Carolla Show for about a year. Naturally, he’s got many thoughts when it comes to these Giants. We both try to chart a logical quarterback journey forward for Joe Schoen, Brian Daboll and the Giants. Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston give the organization some breathing room but these Giants are obviously still on the quarterback search. It’s been a bear. Also, what happened to Daniel Jones? I wrote about his exit late last season, and explore more this conversation. We’ve been bullish on this regime at Go Long. This is a crucial moment for both Schoen and Daboll. Thanks to everyone who watched lived. Always a pleasure to have you on. To join future shows, be sure to download the Substack app: We’ll have you covered all three days of the NFL Draft right here at Go Long. Bob McGinn’s 41st annual draft series is also live. All links are below: * Part 1, WR: Tetairoa McMillan, and then... what? * Part 2, TE: Is Tyler Warren the next Great American NFL Tight End? * Part 3, OT: Inside the hunt for the next stalwart left tackle * Part 4, G/C: Who let the dawgs out? * Part 5, QB: Do NFL scouts view Cam Ward & Shedeur Sanders as franchise quarterbacks? * Part 6, RB: 'Rare human being and a rare player,' but when to draft Ashton Jeanty? * Part 7, DL: Meet the Brawlers * Part 8, Edge: Herd of QB Hunters arrive with warnings... * Part 9, LB: Jihaad Campbell, Alabama's latest ass-kicker, leads class full of playmakers * Part 10, CB: The generational talent of Colorado's Travis Hunter * Part 11, S: Why Malaki Starks, 'A+ across the board,' can run your defense * Part 12, ST: Is it worth drafting a kicker anymore? | Ty & Bob Pod: 2025 NFL Draft with Hall of Famer Bob McGinn | 18 avr. 2025 | 01:32:46
A true 40-yard dash time. (There’s a method to his madness.) Mock drafts. (They are poison.) Anonymous sourcing, and why it matters. (We relive Chris Ballard’s sharp criticism of Bob’s Adonai Mitchell report.) PFF and the cottage industry that is… film review. This 2025 Quarterback Class. And what was the most jarring thing he heard from NFL scouts? Oh, boy. Our Bob McGinn has many, many thoughts. Let’s flesh them all out here on a special edition of the “Ty & Bob Pod.” Video and audio are both above. Thank you all for making Go Long at GoLongTD.com your home for unvarnished draft coverage. All 12 parts to McGinn’s 41st annual series are linked below. Learn how the NFL views this year’s prospects. New here? We’d love to have you join our community today.
