The time has finally come to take a deep dive into the 'H & Claire' story.

In Part 1 we are deep diving into the formation of the duo and the 3 singles ‘DJ’, ‘Half a Heart’ and the AA side ‘All Out Of Love/Beauty and the Beast’.

We went into this with the goal to celebrate an era that has been somewhat ignored or a taboo topic at times. As we look back it's hard not to appreciate the incredible body of work, performances and content they did in just 12 short months and we will forever manifest the album to get its well deserved flowers in the future with a vinyl release (hint hint H, Claire, Fascination…. Part 2 focussing on the album 'Another You, Another Me' and the end of the H & Claire era, is coming in just a week's time on Monday September 16th.

To celebrate it's 13th anniversary, we are diving into the 2011 documentary series 'Steps Reunion', which followed the band as they celebrated their tenth anniversary since their split. The show led to the 'Ultimate Collection' topping the charts and the sold-out 'Ultimate Tour'. It also inspired the similar show 'The Big Reunion', featuring other pop acts reuniting after their own splits.

Despite its success, 'Steps Reunion' stirred up controversy by revealing long-held secrets and rivalries, culminating in a tense dinner scene where the band confronted their issues. While Steps have moved on from the split, the documentary remains a crucial part of their story, contributing to the success of their 2011 reunion and their pursuit of a happy ending.

Our guest today, Conor Sullivan, was the production secretary on the documentary and worked closely with the band throughout the entire filming process. Most importantly, he is a Steps enthusiast like ourselves and we know you are going to love some of the incredible behind the scenes stories Conor shares with us from this time.

We had the absolute pleasure of talking to Gavin Scott from Chart Beats recently. While many of you may know him as the co-host of "A Journey Through Stock Aitken Waterman" and "A Journey Through Aussie Pop," for us, he's the former editor of Smash Hits Magazine here in Australia.

Gavin initially worked for TV Hits in 2000 before transitioning to Smash Hits in 2001. As a massive Steps fan himself, he always made an effort to feature them in the magazines, even facing internal resistance at times. We actively read and consumed his work during this period, so it was incredible to discuss this moment in time and gain an understanding of what it was like working for these ICONIC magazines.

In this chat with Gavin, we delve into the Steps Aussie journey during the 'Buzz' and 'Gold' era (which you might have heard snippets of in our previous episode). We explore what he did to ensure Steps received coverage, sharing incredible stories from the times he interviewed Steps and providing insights into the pop music landscape in Australia in the early 2000s.

We are very excited to FINALLY be bringing you the next instalment in our Australian deep dive, talking all things ‘BUZZ’ and ‘GOLD’ down under.

To tell this story we knew we needed to enlist the help of Gavin Scott from @chartbeatsau (host of A Journey Through Stock Aitken Waterman and A Journey Through Aussie Pop) who during this time was working for TV Hits and Smash Hits magazine (where he became editor until 2005). Without his passion and love for the group, we would not have received half the coverage we did in these iconic magazines during this period.

While in the UK they were riding high with sell out tours, another #1 single and multi-platinum album, this era was undoubtedly the most frustrating time to be a Steps fan in Australia. We were dealt with a 14 month gap between releases, low charting singles and minimal support from TV & Radio.

It's hard to believe, but it has been 25 years since the release of Steps debut album ‘Step One’, a record that has gone on to become one of the most iconic pop albums of the 90s. Released on September 14th 1998 in the UK, it would produce 5 hit singles, 4 of which went Top 10 and of course that #1 million selling AA side.

Worldwide sales are currently over 3 million and as of August 2023 it has a total combined number of nearly 100 million streams on Spotify. Not bad from an act who in the beginning, the label saw Steps as a one-off novelty record act.

We take a HUGE deep dive into the album, our memories of this special time and take you on a journey by talking through each track. As you can imagine, Brad has lots of thoughts and feelings about the infamous 'Track 7'.

It is just a few days before Lisa takes to the stage at Mighty Hoopla for her first solo performance in over a DECADE, so we are officially calling this LISA SCOTT-LEE week and bringing you this BONUS episode to help celebrate.

With the BIGGEST thank you to friend of the pod Leo Stubbing at Sound Museum for providing us with the interview, it was first broadcast on Joy 94.9 in 2006 and conducted by Damian Nicholas. Leo worked at Joy throughout the late 00's and early 10's and dug this out of his archives for us. We are so happy this forgotten interview has resurfaced and we are able to share it with you all.

Note: This interview was conducted 17 years ago and transferred from tape to digital, so the sound quality does mirror this in places.

On May 12th 2003 Lisa Scott-Lee released her ICONIC debut solo single 'Lately' via Mercury Records, becoming the only member of Steps to score a SOLO Top 10 single (and one she co-wrote) as well as inventing what we now know as 'Hun Culture', without even realising she was doing it at the time. We think that is worth celebrating!

Join us as we deep dive into everything regarding the single, from the styling (jeans and a fancy top with a kitten heel), the video, LIVE performances (thats right, our pop girly was serving LIVE vocals on Saturday morning TV in 2003) and not forgetting Lisa's stint as the OG Momager (Kris Jenner who?) to her brothers 3SL.
