| 89. "Should I split the money I made selling shares?"... and more dilemmas | 04 Sep 2024 | 00:14:40 | |
We had a lot of fun running a personal finance edition of AITA a few episodes back. More importantly, our listeners seemed to enjoy it as well – which is why we’ve chosen to run it again. This time, the dilemmas are juicer than ever. For the first dilemma, we tackle an inheritance-based quandary, in which a poster asks: “AITA for not sharing the money I made selling the stocks I inherited when my sister made a lot less selling the stocks she inherited?” Next, we discuss an issue in a share house: “AITA for thinking my flatmate should replace my blender after she broke it?” Finally, we explore a conundrum in which the poster won some money – and is still reluctant to loan their sister $25,000. If you’ve lived through any of these dilemmas, you’ll want to hear this session for its insights. And if you haven’t, you’ll want to hear it for the drama. | 88. The First Home Buyers' Guide – What's it like seeing a mortgage broker for the first time? | 02 Sep 2024 | 00:33:38
Knowing where to begin as a first home buyer can be a challenge. Alien terms abound – from “home loan pre-approval” to “stamp duty”. One such term is “mortgage broker”, which manages to sound both vague and specific at the same time. Fortunately, mortgage brokers don’t need to be another source of confusion. In fact, they can shed light on many of the mysteries surrounding first time home ownership. What’s more, they can help you navigate the sometimes labyrinthine mortgage application process. In this episode, Tash from the Get Rich Slow Club chats with Kobe Clarke-Jacobs from Finance with Kobe. Together, they explore how mortgage brokers can help first home buyers. This includes how brokers make their money from helping clients; which other professionals a first home buyer might want to see; and the government schemes from which a first home buyer might benefit. | 79. Tax time FAQs | 31 Jul 2024 | 00:30:51
Last episode, Tash, Ana, and award-winning accountant Natalie Lennon discussed some of the most common queries around taxes. In doing so, their aim was to remove the shroud of uncertainty that so often surrounds tax time. However, the Get Rich Slow Club is, first and foremost, a community-led podcast. That’s why, in this episode, Tash and Natalie respond to tax-related questions from their listeners. From “Is it worth seeing an accountant if I earn a low income?” to “Do I need to pay tax on my shares if I haven’t withdrawn anything from them?”, these queries run the gamut. Tun in, because to quote your old high school teacher (you know which one): “If someone else has asked the question, you probably will as well.” Disclaimer Any advice is general and does not consider your financial situation needs, or objectives, so consider whether it’s appropriate for you. | 78. Demystifying tax in Australia & what you can claim as a deduction | 29 Jul 2024 | 00:27:38
I think we can all agree that, unless you work for an accounting firm or the ATO, tax is preeeeetty mystified. Fortunately, this episode has emerged from the ethers of EOFY to right that wrong. In this session, Tash and Ana are joined by award-winning accountant Natalie Lennon, and together, they demystify tax. Wondering about marginal tax rates? They discuss them! Have questions about tax on investments? You’ll want to hear their answers! Together, they run the A to Z on the ATO’s domain. After this episode, tax time will feel that little bit more manageable. During our chat about claiming working from home expenses, Nat refers to occupancy expenses. As with all tax deductions it is important to get advice on your individual situation. | 77. Is it better to buy individual shares or ETFs? | 24 Jul 2024 | 00:21:10
Value investing is a strategy often favoured by those seeking to play a more active role in their investments. Touted by Warren Buffett, it involves finding companies that the investor believes to be undervalued, then buying them before the market recognises their worth. To be fair, it’s not as speculative as some other active styles of investing. Even so, its focus on beating the market puts it at odds with the Get Rich Slow philosophy. It also usually prioritises individual shares over ETFs, which long-time listeners will know we love. Of course, you might not share the Get Rich Slow Club’s reservations around value investing. Seeking potentially undervalued individual shares over ETFs might align perfectly with your risk tolerance. So, in the spirit of open dialogue, Tash and Ana spend this episode delving into value investing. To add more flavour to the discussion, they’re joined by Brandon from New Money – a staunch supporter of value investing. Whether you prefer individual shares or ETFs, you won’t want to miss this! | 76. First Home Super Saver scheme and what you need to know about it | 22 Jul 2024 | 00:20:54
In case you’ve missed it, the First Home Super Saver (FHSS) scheme is an initiative that does what the name suggests. With the FHSS, you can save for your first home deposit within your superannuation. By doing so, you can aim to benefit from certain advantages that don’t apply to shares or savings accounts. Like so much in super, the details surrounding the FHSS can feel a bit muddled. That’s why Tash and Ana have devoted this session to discussing the FHSS, how it works, and how it can help you save for a home. Give them an episode, and they’ll give you a primer in the First Home Super Saver scheme! | 75. How one of the world's best investors averages 20% returns every year | 17 Jul 2024 | 00:37:33
The name “Warren Buffett” has almost become synonymous with investing success. As the 10th richest person in the world, Warren Buffett is arguably one of the world’s most famous investors. You’d be forgiven, then, for assuming his investing strategy involves access to assets most of us could never even fathom. Surely, without his deep pockets and mind for numbers, his approach would be too risky for the rest of us. …right? Actually, no. For all his investing returns, Warren Buffett’s investing philosophy closely resembles that of the Get Rich Slow Club. It’s steady, methodical, at times boring, and accessible to everyone. And in this session, Tash chats with Brandon from New Money about how Buffett does it. Your crash course in Warren Buffett’s investing strategy awaits! | 74. Why we need systemic financial change | 15 Jul 2024 | 00:48:03
Conversations around gender-based financial inequality often focus on how far we’ve come as a society. While it’s important to celebrate, we also shouldn’t lose sight of how much change remains ahead of us. To this day, financial hardship and homelessness still disproportionately affect women in Australia. And for all of our collective focus on individual efforts, there needs to be systemic financial change if we want to see results. In this episode, Tash and Ana speak with someone who is striving to bring this systemic inequality to an end. A financial educator at Sprout Education, Jenny Rolfe-Wallace also hosts the international award-winning podcast It’s Not About The Money (Australia). Join Jenny as she talks with the Get Rich Slow Club about financial intersectionality, gender-based poverty, and what we can do about it. | 73. Why a year of sacrifice is needed feat. Emma from the Broke Generation | 10 Jul 2024 | 00:38:54
Tash and Ana’s conversations with Emma from The Broke Generation have become the stuff of legend. In past episodes, they’ve covered an array of topics, spanning from budgeting techniques to moisturiser. This time around, they get a bit more philosophical – and you’ll be glad they did. In this session, Emma shares her learnings from a year of sacrifice, and how the experience shaped her money habits. By finding lessons in adversity, we’re able to build resilience and inform our get-rich-slow strategies at the same time. And that’s precisely what Tash, Ana and Emma hope you take from this ep. | 72. What are the differences between investing in and out of super? | 08 Jul 2024 | 00:31:47
Tash and Ana recently received a thought-provoking question from a listener named Angela: “I’m new to the world of investing and looking to get started. What are the differences between putting more money into superannuation, compared to ETFs? I’m a sole trader, so I can decide how much I invest in super.” Firstly – thanks for sharing your question, Angela! Secondly – this is a pertinent topic, since we’ve received versions of this questions from multiple listeners. That’s why, in this episode, we set out to compare the potential pros and cons of super and ETFs. As a bonus, we also discuss the tax changes in this new financial year, and how they may impact you. | 71. What buying a $100 moisturiser taught me about money feat. Emma from the Broke Generation | 03 Jul 2024 | 00:39:36
Emma from The Broke Generation has shared some deep wisdom on this podcast. However, while practical strategies and structured insights are useful guides, there are moments in which we learn all we need from a single experience. In this session, Tash details how the purchase of a $100 moisturiser altered her relationship with money. At a glance, it seems like a strange catalyst for change. However, for Tash, the moisturiser symbolised a fork in the road – a choice about the life she wanted to live. Whether or not you use moisturiser yourself, you’ll be able to relate; we all have our own “$100 moisturiser”, and how we respond to it can influence how we manage our finances. | 70. Card Points 101: How to make the most of rewards | 01 Jul 2024 | 00:27:27
As a general rule, the Get Rich Slow Club approaches credit card points with a wary eye. Anything that compels us into spending more money clashes with our philosophy, and points can fall into that category. With that said, there are obviously times when we need (or simply want) to spend money. At moments like these, points can be a nifty hack in our quest to get rich slow. That’s why, in this episode, Tash and Ana dive into the weird world of bonus points. Beyond providing an overview on how they work, they also compare the pros and cons of different points systems; explore how to earn them easily; and discuss how to spend them for maximum effect. | 87. Is relocating for work worth it? & how Harry 10x his salary | 28 Aug 2024 | 00:26:40
You may have met someone who relocated for work. You may have done it yourself. Whether it’s for a higher-paying role, cheaper real estate, or simply a tree change, it can be an appealing thought. But when you weigh up all of the competing financial factors, is relocating for work worth it? This obviously isn’t a question anyone can answer with a simple “yes” or “no”. There are a range of factors which can influence the outcome, from the location to the job opportunity. Even so, when considering such a move, it can help to have a decision matrix. That’s why, in this session, Tash and Ana welcome a guest who is a living case study for relocating. Harry Wallace is a buyers advocate at home buyers advocacy firm Wallace Advocates. He also considerably grew his salary by relocating for work. In this session, he and the hosts discuss their experiences with professional relocation, and what they learned each time. | 69. Is investing in VDHG long-term a good idea? | 26 Jun 2024 | 00:25:45
VDHG is a very popular investment within the Australian long-term investing community. It was no surprise, then, when a listener recently asked us: “Is investing in VDHG long-term a good option?” At the Get Rich Slow Club, we don’t like to deal in “good investments” or “bad investments”. After all, the right investment for you might be the wrong choice for someone else. That’s because VDHG’s (or any asset’s) suitability for you can depend on a range of factors, from your risk tolerance, to the amount you want to invest. In this session, we discuss these different factors in-depth. By doing so, we hope to help you feel empowered about choosing your investments – whether it’s VDHG or anything else. | 63. Dividends 101: What to do with any dividends you earn | 03 Jun 2024 | 00:22:40
Receiving dividends can be one of the great joys of investing. For starters, they can serve as a reward for your investing patience. Secondly, if you reinvest them wisely, and the market conditions are favourable, they can maximise the effects of compound interest. However, the act of navigating the dividends process can sometimes feel a bit murky. To clear the waters, Tash and Ana devote this episode to all things dividends. Throughout this session, they cover what dividends are, how they’re paid, and which investments have historically paid them. They also explore how to reinvest any dividends you earn, along with the pros and cons of dividend reinvestment plans. Think of this episode as your crash course in dividends! Starting a business can be an effective way to accelerate your wealth, but it doesn’t come without risk. Jai Howitt is a travel photographer and entrepreneur who founded a company which skyrocketed to $3 million in revenue. | 61. "I only invest in two ETFs. Am I diversified enough?" | 20 May 2024 | 00:17:17
Recently, a Get Rich Slow Club listener asked Tash and Ana an interesting question (which we’ve paraphrased below): “I invest in two ETFs which track the S&P 500 and the ASX 200. Should I be diversifying even more, or should I stick to what feels good (and easy), which is automatically investing in the ETFs I currently have?” Tash and Ana love questions like this, because they get to the crux of getting rich slow. That’s why they’ve committed this episode to approaching it from every angle. If you’ve ever wondered how much diversification is “enough”, you won’t want to miss this session! On the journey to getting rich slow, frugality can often seem like a less flamboyant travel companion. | 57. How to work towards Financial Independence Retire Early (FIRE) feat. Dave Gow from Strong Money Australia | 22 Apr 2024 | 00:46:54
“Financial Independence Retire Early – or FIRE”. The name is so epic that the concept practically sells itself. However, there’s nothing clickbaity about the road to FIRE. Like many topics we cover on this podcast, FIRE requires structure, consistency, and a long-term plan. The good news? With enough of those three qualities, FIRE can be attained by virtually anyone. Few people embody this better than Dave Gow, founder of Strong Money Australia and co-host of the Aussie FIRE podcast. Having reached FIRE by age 28, Dave now shares his FIRE experiences with people across Australia. | 56. Which ETFs should you buy together? | 15 Apr 2024 | 00:22:05
Many investors are perfectly happy to invest in just one ETF (or none, for that matter). However, some of our listeners prefer to invest in a diverse portfolio of Exchange-Traded Funds. For these investors, choosing the right ETF pairing can make a big difference. After all, some ETFs overlap in their assets, while others are diametrically opposed in their strategies. In this episode, Natasha Etschmann (Tash Invests) and Ana Kresina (Head of Product & Community at Pearler) discuss which ETFs pair well together. They also detail what to look for if you’re trying to choose complementary ETFs. After listening to this episode, you’ll feel much more confident in choosing the right range of ETFs for your goals. | 54. HECS-HELP debt: should you pay it off early? | 01 Apr 2024 | 00:17:51
Are you an Australian citizen who has started a local uni degree in the last 35 years? If so, you’ll know about HECS-HELP debt. In the early stages of your career, HECS-HELP debt can be pretty easy to forget about. For starters, you don’t need to start making payments until your income reaches a certain threshold. And even then, it’s deducted from your salary, meaning it simply feels like another form of tax. It stands to reason, then, that many people would decide to let time and pre-tax income whittle it away. But here’s the kicker: the more you earn, the more you’re required to pay towards the principle. And here’s the second kicker: the debt is indexed to inflation. In other words, when inflation increases, so does what remains of your HECS-HELP debt. Armed with this knowledge, is it worth making additional payments to clear your HECS-HELP debt? In this session, Natasha Etschmann (Tash Invests) and Ana Kresina (Head of Product & Community at Pearler) explore this very topic. In doing so, they discuss how HECS-HELP debt works, and then dissect the arguments for and against paying it off early. By the show’s wrap, you’ll have a clearer idea of how to make the right decision for your goals. And by considering these factors in-depth, each listener can come closer to the right answer for their goals. For this Get Rich Slow Club session, Tash and Ana tackle some of their favourite personal finance-focused AITA threads. One of the threads raises the question: “AITA for retiring early while my girlfriend works a stressful job?”. Another ponders: “AITA for not paying for my friend’s broken sunglasses?” And as you might expect, Tash and Ana approach both through a Get Rich Slow lens. Whether you’re hoping to retire early or have bickered with your friends over money, this episode has something for you!
