16 Feb 2022 | Ep. 20: The Disney World Alligator Attack (feat. Frank "Alligator" Robb) | 01:17:05
On June 14th, 2016, the Graves' lives were turned upside-down when their 2-year old son, Lane, was killed by an alligator outside of Disney's Grand Floridian Resort. We also sit down with alligator expert, Frank "Alligator" Robb, who has been working for over 26 years in Florida responding to nuisance wildlife calls. We ask him how to live safely and peacefully alongside alligators, and how to fight a gator off if you're unlucky enough to find yourself in their jaws. We also had no idea how famous he was until towards the end of our interview with him, so if you haven't heard of him already, you'll learn at the same time we did why he's so famous in a state that doesn't have alligators naturally in the wild. You can learn more about Frank and his non-profit at EEARSS.org and listen to his new podcast, the EEARSS Podcast here. 02 Mar 2022 | Ep. 21: The Boy Who Cried "Tiger" | 00:58:42
On Christmas Day in 2007, Carlos Sousa Jr. and his friends Paul and Kulbir Dhaliwhal decided to spend their afternoon at the San Francisco Zoo. One of the last exhibits they wanted to see before the zoo closed that night was the zoo's 4-year old and 243 pound (110kg) Siberian Tiger, Tatiana. The boys just didn't realize exactly how close they were going to get. This case was extremely rare, especially in an AZA-accredited institution. 16 Mar 2022 | Ep. 22: The Most Misunderstood Fish (feat. Jaida Elcock) | 01:11:23
The morning of August 19th, 2003, started like every other for Deborah Blanche Franzman: She went swimming in the ocean at Avila Beach in California. But tragedy struck as Deborah was swimming with a group of seals and a Great White Shark struck her. In this episode, we have the pleasure of speaking with Jaida Elcock, co-founder of Minorities in Shark Sciences (MISS), and PhD candidate in the MIT-Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. We talk all things shark - Why do bites happen? Are they actually trying to eat people? Do sharks sleep? And what the heck is a Wobbegong anyways? You can read more about the shark finning industry here, and read more about worldwide shark encounter statistics here. And we forgot to mention in episode - you can download the OCEARCH Shark Tracker app and track shark migrations in real time! 30 Mar 2022 | Ep. 23: Death From Above | 00:51:35
For this episode, we're going way back - 2 million years back. The discovery of the Taung Child skull was huge for two reasons; That modern-day humans originated in Africa, and early human ancestors used to be preyed upon by large birds. Which bird is best? Which is the smelliest? Should we be worried about being attacked from above? Ashley serves as the expert for this episode as we talk all things raptor/bird of prey. And for our Patrons, stayed tuned for a bonus episode where we chat with a Golden Eagle falconer to talk about the dangers associated with handling such large and powerful birds. In June of 2019, Kyler Bourgeous and his parents were on their favorite trail in Antelope Island State Park. The island is home to hundreds of bison, which Kyler was very used to seeing. But June 1st was different, and Kyler was charged and gored by a bison. Three months later, he finally returned to the park with a girl he just started seeing, Kayleigh Davis. Everything started off normal, until the unthinkable happened again. To learn more about the bison at Antelope Island State Park, visit their website here. 11 May 2022 | Ep. 26: A Fatal Swan Dive | 00:41:28
In April of 2012, Anthony Hensley began his day of work for Knox Swan and Dog, a company that uses dogs and Swans to deter Canada Geese. No one could've anticipated that on this day, he'd be drowned by a Mute Swan. Typically when people get too close to Swans, they will hiss, flap their wings and rush at you. But swimming near or paddling near Swans and their cygnets can lead to a Swan charging, biting, and hitting you. If you'd like to learn more ways to deter Canada Geese besides using Swans, you can visit maine.gov or email us at getoutalivepodcast@gmail.com to learn more. OUR MERCH STORE IS LIVE! 08 Jun 2022 | Ep. 28: When Swimming with Dolphins Doesn't Go Swimmingly | 00:42:02
~Please excuse the poor audio quality, if this is your first experience with Get Out Alive, maybe don't make this your first episode?~ This week, three pals get together to talk about how dangerous it can be to swim with Bottlenose Dolphins and some people who were seriously injured when swimming with dolphins. And what is a dolphin, anyways? And should we be swimming with them? If you are visiting the Gulf of California in Mexico, please keep an eye out for Vaquitas and people with Gillnets. If you see someone with a gillnet or a Vaquita entrapped, please call the NOAA Fisheries Enforcement Hotline at (800)-853-1964. If you are visiting North Padre Island or the surrounding ocean in Texas, keep an eye out for the aggressive male dolphin and find more resources at fisheries.noaa,gov. We also talk about the dog attack experienced by dog trainer Laura Monaco Torelli three years ago in her Chicago neighborhood, and how it changed her and her dog forever. At the end, we briefly touch upon the feral dog problem in India, and the staggering amount of dog attacks that happen there each day. 31 Aug 2022 | Ep. 34: Night of the Grizzlies - Part 2 | 00:58:17
In Part 2 of our coverage of Night of the Grizzlies, we find out exactly who was screaming and why. Although most of our stories are graphic, this one is especially so. Listener discretion is advised. Julie Helgeson and Michele Koons became the first recorded victims of a fatal grizzly bear attack in Glacier National Park, on the same night, by different bears. Their deaths changed the way that National Parks, especially Glacier, manage their grizzlies. Their deaths could have been avoided if park officials had responded to the reports of the increasing number of negative grizzly encounters, and the continued habituation of the bears. And for years to follow their deaths, the North American grizzly population suffered greatly. Now, in 2022, we know better and must do better. If you'd like more details on this story, see Jack Olsen's Night of the Grizzlies. You can also check out Montana PBS's coverage here. 14 Sep 2022 | Ep. 35: Steve Irwin | 00:40:37
On September 4th, 2006, the world's most famous conservationist, Steve Irwin, went out on the ocean to shoot a documentary called Ocean's Deadliest. No one could've anticipated that he'd be killed by an animal that wasn't even on the Ocean's Deadliest list. Steve was beloved by the world for his passion for wild animals of all kinds, especially crocodiles. So many of us grew up watching Crocodile Hunter and were inspired to work with animals (Ashley included). So what happened on that day in 2006 that led to his death? Should we be worried about stingrays? Tune in to hear how we can all recreate around stingrays safely. November 15th is Steve Irwin Day. He'd encountered grizzlies in the past, but he never had an encounter bear spray couldn't stop. But his whole life changed when he was put between a mother grizzly bear and her cub. Jeremy was attacked not once, but three times that day. Tune in to hear how he got out alive. This episode contains graphic imagery. Listener discretion is advised. 12 Oct 2022 | Ep. 37: The Zanesville Massacre | 00:44:33
Content Warning: Animal abuse This week on Get Out Alive, we cover a tragic day in October of 2011 that led to the death of over 40 exotic animals in Zanesville, Ohio, that had been kept in terrible conditions. This case led to Ohio changing its laws around exotic animal ownership, and sparked a countrywide debate about owning exotic animals, that was of course later blown up by Netflix's Tiger King in 2020. If you'd like to know more about how USDA APHIS Animal Care inspects and regulates these facilities, you can check out their Inspection Guide or Animal Welfare Act and Animal Welfare Regulations. Who's the girl that survived symptomatic rabies? We're also joined by long time listener and renowned bat lover, Sophiane (@HonkIfURHoary) ! She helps us answer some big questions like, what should you do if there's a bat in your home? Where's the best spot for a bat box? What is White Nose Syndrome, and how can we help bats in our area? 09 Nov 2022 | Ep. 39: The Thak Man-Eater | 00:43:13
In Ashley's first solo episode, she covers the final hunt that renowned man-eating cat hunter, Jim Corbett, embarked on. We covered one of Jim's more infamous killers in our first episode, the Champawat tigress, with Sam Helle. We highly encourage you to listen to that episode before this one to get more insight on human-tiger conflict and what could cause attacks from Sam. Although the Thak man-eater did not kill as many humans over such a long period of time as the Champawat tigress did, the fear she caused was long lasting and very real to those that had to experience her. 07 Dec 2022 | Ep. 41: The Kirov Wolves | 00:55:11
Nick is back! And in this week's episode, we discuss the Man-Eating Kirov Wolves - a very long series of shocking wolf attacks that occurred in the Kirov Oblast in Russia during and directly after WWII. There were many things that could've contributed to the cause of these attacks, but many biologists and conservationists at the time contested the validity of these attacks because predatory attacks by wolves are so rare. To this day, Russia still has 30-40,000 wolves that can be hunted year-round. In America, the status of Gray Wolves is entirely different; Towards the end of the episode we discuss Colorado's reintroduction of wolves. I had the pleasure of guesting on Pangolin: The Conservation Podcast hosted by Jack Baker, to talk about our favorite conservation stories from 2022. The other guests included the hilarious Ellen Weatherford from the Just the Zoo Of Us Podcast and the fabulous Vikram Baliga from the Planthropology Podcast! I talked about the Black-Naped Pheasant Pigeon, a bird 'lost to science' since its discovery 140 years ago. 21 Dec 2022 | Ep. 42: 2022 Wrap Up | 01:02:23
In our final episode of 2022, we're carrying on the tradition of going over attacks that happened this year that we didn't get a chance to cover. We'll also be releasing a Patreon bonus episode before the end of the year to cover even more stories. In this episode we discuss: A mountain lion attack in September in Santa Clarita, the recent euthanization of conservation icon P22, a rabid bobcat entering a home in Vermont, a black bear attack in Connecticut, a chimpanzee zoo escape in Sweden, and finally a tragic hiking accident that occurred in New Hampshire in November. You can find P22's eulogy written by Beth Pratt on the National Wildlife Federation's website. Because we talk about them so much...if you'd like to learn more about Ben Kilham's Bear Center in New Hampshire or donate, visit kilhambearcenter.org. You can check out the Furuvik Zoo's Facebook page here for more updates on the escape. And to learn more about hiker safety tips, visit hikesafe.com. In this episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Babu Ram Lamichhane, Senior Conservation Officer/Officer in Charge of the NTNC Biodiversity Conservation Center in Chitwan, Nepal. He is also a member of the IUCN/SSC Asian rhino, bear, and crocodile Specialist Groups. He got his doctorate in biology, and his PhD thesis is titled "Living with the Large Carnivores: The interaction between humans, tigers and leopards in Chitwan National Park, Nepal". What's it like to grow up and live around leopards? Do they really live up to their reputation as human hunters? Are there any patterns to the types of people they kill, and how can you avoid being attacked by one? Tune in to hear the answers to these questions and more in our interview with Dr. Babu Ram. 01 Feb 2023 | Ep. 45: Killed by Coyotes | 00:48:28
Taylor Josephine Stephanie Luciow (aka Taylor Mitchell) was an up and coming country folk singer in Canada, but since October of 2009, she has been famous for a much different and darker reason: She's the only human (on record) to have been killed by a coyote. What happened in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park that led to this? A recent study titled "Severe environmental conditions create severe conflicts: A novel ecological pathway to extreme coyote attacks on humans" shed light on exactly why this death happened, and we go over it all. We also go over a TWS article and other scientific paper called "Spatiotemporal relationships of coyotes and free-ranging domestic cats as indicators of conflict in Culver City, California" about why so many cats were being killed in an area where coyotes lived (spoiler: it's not the coyotes fault). If you'd like to visit the Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Canada and want to know how to stay safe around their wildlife, you can visit their website here. If you visit the park and have a negative encounter with a coyote, call and report the incident to 1-877-852-3100. 01 Mar 2023 | Ep. 47: The Animal Most Likely to Kill a Human | 00:58:30
Why does National Geographic call the Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) the animal most likely to kill a human? And why do they claim the Nile Crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) is a "vicious man-eater"? In this episode, we dive deeper into why certain crocodiles are considered more aggressive than others, while looking at two case studies of killer crocodiles. If you're in Australia and see a Saltwater crocodile, please report it to 1300 130 372 [select option 1] or report it online or on their QWildlife App. You can also check out their BeachSafe website to find a safe beach near you. 15 Mar 2023 | Ep. 48: The Likelihood Of Being Attacked By A Walrus Is Never 0 | 00:53:08
Our patrons voted: Walruses! Walruses (Odobenus rosmarus) are large pinnipeds that can be up to 11 feet long and weigh nearly 2 tons, with tusks up to a meter long extending from their mouths. They typically live in the arctic, meaning their interactions with humans are limited... But there are early accounts of walruses attacking humans, and even captive walruses are known to attack humans. We cover some attack stories, along with why and how walruses play with dead birds, and how some transient walruses have been causing trouble in the last few years. Visit the US Fish and Wildlife Service's website to find out more ways you can stay safe around wild walruses while keeping them safe too. What the residents of Grafton (both new and old) didn't expect was the explosion of conflicts that ensued with resident black bears, including a handful of bear attacks. We're back after a short break with our first episode of 2024, so why not start the year off by talking about one of the most controversial topics in wildlife: Wolves and the Endangered Species Act. In late December of 2023, Colorado released 10 wolves into the state, marking the first time in decades that wolves have called the state home, but this was met with a fair share of controversy. We talk all about the release, plus the plight of the Mexican Wolf in New Mexico, and how their recovery is being hindered by the government that set out to save it. If you'd like to leave a tip to Wyoming Game and Fish about poaching, you can call 1-877-943-3847 or text WGFB and your tip to 847-411. If you'd like to submit a poaching tip to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, contact 1-877-COLO-OGT or email game.thief@state.co.us. 21 Feb 2024 | Ep. 72: Timothy Treadwell: Grizzly Man | 00:38:35
Timothy Treadwell (aka Grizzly Man) was renowned for his extremely close relationships with the brown bears in Katmai National Park. He spent 13 summers living amongst the bears, and in his last 5 years got over 100 hours of footage of the bears and red foxes in the park. But his close relationship with the bears ultimately led to a fatal attack on him and his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard. 20 Mar 2024 | Ep. 74: The Truth Behind the Screen | 01:43:30
What's really going on behind the scenes in all those 'cute' videos of people interacting with their pet jaguars, tigers, leopards, and bears? Can people really get that kind of social media content without ever being injured? And are the animals really taken care of? In Part 1 of this episode, I sit down with wildlife ecologist and science communicator Sophiane Nacer (@HonkIfURHoary) to go over the extensive research she did on Single Vision Inc., the 'organization' behind the popular TikTok accounts SingleVision and SafariSammie. We go over some of the abuse going on behind the scenes, and in Part 2 (which is available now on Patreon) we go over some criminal charges lingering over the organization and some deaths caused by a very similar 'organization'. 17 Apr 2024 | Ep. 76: India's Big 3 (Feat. Mathen "Rajeev" Mathew) | 01:03:26
I had the pleasure of speaking with wildlife researcher and human-wildlife conflict specialist, Mathen "Rajeev" Mathew, about the animals he studies that cause some of the most dramatic conflicts in India: Tigers, leopards and elephants. I was stunned by how many attacks occur by each of these animals a year, and we dive into why these attacks and deaths happen. Just be warned, it does get graphic. 18 Aug 2021 | Ep. 6: Colorado man vs. Coyote pack | 00:47:00
Probably our most feisty episode yet - join us this week to hear about how Andrew Dickehage survived a gruesome attack from a pack of coyotes as he was walking to work at 2am. In this episode we also discuss a lot of America's history with coyotes, which is not always a pleasant one - like we say in the episode, if you'd like to discuss coyotes with us further, contact us on our socials. 25 Aug 2021 | Ep. 7: Coyotes Part 2 - Rabies | 00:35:05
As a continuation (kind of) to last week's episode, this week Ashley and Nick tell the story of Ian O'Reilly, who spent 10 minutes strangling a coyote to death after it tried to attack his son. This launches us into a long conversation about rabies - how is rabies spread? What animals get rabies? How can we protect ourselves against it? We also give a tad more history on coyotes, including how mange was purposefully spread to the western U.S. just in an attempt to eradicate coyotes. 24 Nov 2021 | Ep. 14: Travis the pet Chimpanzee | 00:52:00
On February 16th, 2009, an entirely avoidable event occurred: Charla Nash had her face ripped off by her friend Sandra Herold's pet chimp, Travis.Travis was a 200 pound, 14 year-old Chimpanzee. His owners "adopted" him for $50,000 from a place called the Missouri Chimpanzee Sanctuary, and raised him as a mix between a pet and a child. He ate at the dinner table with them, drank wine, slept in their beds, and DROVE. CARS. You can imagine Ashley and Nick have some strong opinions in this one.And yes, we also touch on Harambe. This is our most graphic episode yet - if you are of the faint of heart, this may not be the episode for you.Somehow we didn't mention Jane Goodall (despite her being Ashley's idol), but you can learn more about her amazing chimpanzee work at JaneGoodall.org Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, Tiktok, check out our website GetOutAlivePodcast.com and join us on Patreon (where you can now follow us for free)! In the late 1890s, an area of Kenya called Tsavo was terrorized by two mane-less male lions. Depending on who you ask, they killed between 35-300 people. Join Nick and Ashley for this long tale of two cats, and how for many months they evaded over 8,000 men, one of which was John Henry Patterson (who wrote a book about his journey in The Man Eaters of Tsavo and Other East African Adventures), despite him staying up every night to try to stop their killing spree. 22 Dec 2021 | Ep. 16: Kangaroo Jack You Up | 01:02:56
In this episode, Ashley and Nick discuss four different kangaroo attacks in Australia, all with different causes of attack. There are also many questions about kangaroos answered: How high can they jump? How many species are there? How much damage can they really do? How can you protect yourself? And what is a kangaroo cull anyways? The Conservation is a great website with resources on how you can avoid collisions with wildlife in Australia. And if you live in or visit Australia, aami.com has a great table on what places experience more wildlife crashes at what times of the year. You can find information on the 2021 Kangaroo Cull here. 19 Jan 2022 | Ep. 18: Otterly Vicious Attacks | 00:40:13
In the later half of 2021, a series of attacks were reported in Anchorage, Alaska, carried out by river otters. Also in late 2021, a man in Singapore visiting the Botanic Gardens says he believes a group of smooth-coated otters would've killed him had his friend not intervened. Ashley and Nick break down the possible causes of these attacks, while making some (not so great in Nick's opinion) puns along the way. They also chat about some other totally tubular Mustelids, and the plot of the Zootopia movie. It's a wild start to 2022, folks. We had the pleasure of speaking with retired police officer and the world's leading fatal dog attack expert, Jim Crosby. He has a Master's degree in Veterinary Forensics from the University of Florida, and is currently working on a PhD studying fatal dog attacks. He also wrote the newest U.S. Dept. of Justice curriculum on police-dog encounters so officers can respond to calls with aggressive dogs and not have to take physical action. How common are human deaths from dogs? What happens to a dog that's bitten or killed someone? How can you spot signs of aggression in your dog or another dog? Find out the answers to those questions and more in Part 1 of our interview with Jim! You can find Part 2 of our interview with Jim on our Patreon right now at the $5 or $15 level, otherwise you can find it on our regular feed next week! Next week we answer - are certain breeds more responsible for attacks? We decided not to cover our own story at the beginning like we usually do because we felt that most people who own dogs or know people who own dogs have heard of dog attack stories or have unfortunately been a victim in a dog attack. If you or someone you know has been struggling after a dog attack, check out the American Psychological Association's website for tips on helping someone who's struggling, or you can find a licensed therapist through Psychology Today. If you have an aggressive dog, you may want to seek help from a veterinary behaviorist. There is another podcast called The Bitey End of the Dog by Michael Shikashio (CDBC) that explores the topic of dog aggression further, and Michael's website AgressiveDog.com has great professional resources related to dog aggression and behavior. Tune in for the final portion of our interview with the world's foremost expert on fatal dog attacks, Jim Crosby. In this portion, we ask more hard-hitting questions: Are certain breeds the cause of more attacks than others? Can dogs that have been bred to fight in illegal dog fighting be re-integrated back into society? How can you stop an approaching aggressive dog? If you or someone you know has been struggling after a dog attack, check out the American Psychological Association's website for tips on helping someone who's struggling, or you can find a licensed therapist through Psychology Today. If you have an aggressive dog, you may want to seek help from a veterinary behaviorist. 15 May 2024 | Ep. 78: Bear Lady Kay | 00:50:54
Kay Grayson was by no means a conventional woman. After leading a wild life living on boats and training attack dogs, she settled in North Carolina where she fell in love with black bears. Kay took her love of bears farther than most, by feeding the bears and allowing them to live in her trailer with her. But when she's found dead one day, authorities are left to wonder if the bears she loved so much caused her demise. For more information on how to live safely with bears, check out Bearwise.org.
