Episode 422 - One Thing You Should Never Do14 Jan 202500:05:40

In this episode I discuss the importance of focusing on your personal health journey rather than comparing oneself to others.

I emphasize that everyone's wellness journey is unique and that comparisons can lead to unrealistic expectations and decreased motivation. Instead, listen to your own body, identify personal health struggles, and focus on consistent improvements over time.

At the end of the day, your health is about you. Progress doesn’t happen overnight, but each small, consistent improvement gets you closer to living your best life.

Episode 355 - Chronic cardio: The silent killer of your fitness goals!07 May 202400:07:27

In this episode, I discuss the concept of chronic cardio and its negative effects on the body.

Chronic cardio refers to overly stressful cardiovascular workouts that are conducted at rates that are too high and without sufficient rest. This pattern of exercise can lead to overuse injuries, chronic fatigue, and compromised health and weight loss goals. The primary stress hormone cortisol remains elevated for long durations, suppressing immune function and hormonal balances.

I would recommend the Phil Maffetone method, which involves training at a heart rate below your maximum aerobic function threshold. I also suggest incorporating resistance training and occasional intense workouts for optimal health and results.

Episode 293 - Higher HRV = Better health. Here's how to improve yours 🚀03 Oct 202300:10:52

This week I am discussing HRV (heart rate variability) and how it can be used to help optimize your daily performance and health.

HRV is a measure of the time between heartbeats. HRV measures vary by person and over time, fluctuating based on lifestyle choices and lived experiences, from stress levels to sleep patterns, exercise habits, and levels of physical exertion the body, day-to-day.

Paying attention to changes in your HRV trends over time is also a way to track the success of lifestyle interventions like fitness routine or dietary changes. A rise in HRV shows that your efforts are paying off, while a drop in HRV could indicate that further adjustments need to be made.

Using a Whoop or Oura Ring would be one way to understand your HRV trends. These wearables could be useful but I don't recommend always relying on technology for your health trends. What are some ways to improve your HRV?

 - Regular Exercise

 - Proper Sleep

 - Healthy Diet

 - Light Exposure

 - Meditation

and Cold Thermogenesis!

If you have any HRV questions, feel free to email me at brian@briangryn.com

Have a great day!

Episode 95 - Eliminate This One Thing!26 Oct 202100:09:10

Over the years, Big Food was able to convince us that snacking was not only acceptable, but it was also healthy! A whole new category of food was created and it needed to be cheap and easy to eat. So most snacks consist of crackers, pretzels, cookies or anything that is a refined carbohydrate. Sugar and flour was the perfect match for snacking because it never spoils and can be eaten on the run!

The pattern of the increase in snacks throughout the years was a great money maker for Big Food companies which increased the risk of insulin resistance. Insulin resistance requires 2 things - high levels and persistent levels. High levels of insulin are provided by refined carbohydrates found in snacks. Persistent levels are provided by the increased eating opportunities.

Insulin resistance is the ultimate outcome of all this snacking. Instead of a balance between the insulin dominant (fed) state and the insulin deficient (fasting) state, we now spend most of our time in a 'fed' state. And you wonder why we gain weight?

Try eliminating snacking and eat 3 satiating meals. If you have the urge to snack, wait, take a drink of water, tea or black coffee (no sweeteners) and let the hunger wave subside!

Episode 277 - What's the Difference Between Omega 3 and Omega 6 Fatty Acids?08 Aug 202300:08:58

This week I discuss the difference between Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids and what role they could play in your health. There are some conflicting views regarding PUFA's so I recommend you do your own research, self experiment and come to your own conclusion.

Omega-3 fatty acids are a group of polyunsaturated fats that are essential to the human body. They are composed of three main components, EPA, DHA, and ALA. EPA and DHA (found in fatty fish, shellfish and some algae), which are the most important forms of Omega-3 fatty acids as they’re easily absorbed by the human body and support numerous bodily functions, including heart and brain health. ALA, on the other hand, is found in a range of plant-based foods, including flaxseed, chia seeds and nuts like walnuts.

Omega-6 fatty acids are also polyunsaturated fats and are found in a variety of foods, including plant oils (such as corn, sunflower, soybean, and safflower oils), nuts and seeds. The main omega-6 fatty acid, known as linoleic acid, is considered to be essential in our body, and it supports a variety of functions, including stimulating skin and hair growth, supporting the transport of nutrients throughout the body, and maintaining a strong immune system.

I believe a good rule of thumb is to not cook with the Omega-6 fatty acids because they become oxidized and create inflammation in your body. Stick to cooking in the more stable saturated fat because they are extremely resistant to damage, and they aren’t converted to dangerous compounds.

Jay Feldman is against any PUFA's while Dr. Bill Harris believes Omega 3's are beneficial in every way possible. I will leave links to Jay's article on PUFA's and Dr Harris' research on Omega 3's below. I recommend listening to my interview with Jay and my interview with Dr. Harris in order to come to your own conclusion.

Have a great day!

Episode 45 - Are you Challenging Your Brain?27 Apr 202100:06:01

As you age it’s important to understand that you can generate new brain cells - learning new things, gaining skills, being in unpredictable situations or challenges can trigger neuroplasticity and neurogenesis. More importantly, doing so has a range of other important benefits, including improving mood, increasing memory formation, and preventing the decline associated with aging.

Different areas of the brain can be challenged by different tasks.

  • Prefrontal is improved by puzzles, chess, or meditation.
  • Temporal lobes can be improved by memory games and musical instruments.
  • Parietal lobes by logic games and/or juggling.
  • Cerebellum is improved by yoga, dancing, and coordination games like tennis.

Pick one thing that you have been wanting to do and commit 10-20 minutes per day to do it.

Find a Creative Hobby. Don't focus on the amount of time you practice at first, but rather aim for consistency. Devote what time you can, but be firm with your commitment.

  • Create Artwork - Painting, mosaics, or pottery are options
  • Learn an Instrument  - I have been taking piano and devote 20 minutes per day with one 30 minute lesson a week.
  • Learn a new language - Take a class or do it at home (i.e. Rosetta Stone)

Getting weekly lessons will also help your progress and keep you on track.

Episode 229 - New Study: Intermittent Fasting + Protein vs. Caloric Restriction!21 Feb 202300:08:37

This week I discuss an interesting 8 week study comparing intermittent fasting (5:2) along with protein pacing (IF-P) vs. heart healthy caloric restriction (CR). Protein pacing involves eating an optimal amount of protein at regular intervals throughout the day.  Caloric restriction of a heart-healthy diet consists of an increased intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and liquid plant oils and minimal intakes of processed foods, added sugars, salt, and alcohol (65% carbohydrate intake, 20% fat, and 15% protein) [(1516)]. In comparison, the IF approach is a modified IF regimen, which allows consumption of 20% to 25% of energy needs on scheduled fasting days (1-2/wk), combined with a protein meal plan consisting of 35% to 45% carbohydrate, 20% to 30% fat, and 30% to 35% protein for 5 or 6 days weekly.

Conclusion: IF-P resulted in greater (p < 0.05) reductions in weight (−9% vs. −5%), total (−16% vs. −9%) and visceral (−33% vs. −14%) fat mass, and desire to eat (−17% vs. 1%) and increased fat-free mass percent (6% vs. 3%) compared with CR.

Episode 162 - How to Control Hunger21 Jun 202200:14:27

This week I discussed hunger and ways to overcome it throughout the day!

For the most part, hunger is a conditioned response based on certain times throughout the day. By randomly skipping meals and avoiding refined foods we can break this conditioned response of hunger pains throughout the day. Also, avoiding snacking by eating only at the table (not your car, movie theater or on the couch) is a great place to start if you rather not skip a meal. Here are a few other tips to avoid hunger:

- Drink sparkling water

- Stay busy

- Eat Satiating Meals (High protein and fat)

- Drink Tea or Black Coffee

- Avoid the Kitchen after a certain time

and put junk food in places you can't reach. (or just don't buy it at all :)

I hope this episode helps change your relationship with food and gives you some helpful tips to overcome hunger throughout the day!

Episode 110 - REM Sleep: What It Is and Why You Need It!21 Dec 202100:10:40

REM, which stands for “rapid eye movement” is one of the 4 stages of sleep that your body’s sleep cycles consist of. It is known as the “mentally restorative” stage of sleep when the brain converts short-term memories into long-term ones. Your brain is very active during REM sleep and it is when the most vivid dreams occur.

REM sleep is essential for keeping your brain and body healthy, and a sufficient amount is required in order to perform at your best. It also plays an important role in mood regulation as well. Additionally, research suggests when people are deprived of REM sleep they are less capable of remembering things they’ve learned prior to falling asleep.

REM sleep is the time when new learnings from the day are committed to long-term memory. It’s significant to athletes from the perspective of technical skills worked on or practiced that day–they are retained during REM sleep, so failing to get the proper amount at night can prevent you from seeing the benefits of your practice that day.

Adults should aim to spend about 20-25% of their time asleep in REM sleep, with 90 minutes being what is commonly suggested.

If you have concerns that you’re not getting enough REM sleep, these are a few potential causes (outside of sleep disorders) you should make efforts to avoid:

  • Feeling stressed during the day
  • Late meals or eating close to sleep time
  • Screened device usage in bed
  • Sleeping in a new place or a bed that’s not your own
  • Alcohol consumption before going to sleep

One thing in particular that really stands out regarding how to increase REM sleep is a concept we call sleep consistency–going to bed and getting up at similar times each day. Your body is able to function more efficiently on a regular schedule, and that applies to your sleep schedule too.

The second big thing is to stay away from alcohol before bed. When your body is forced to process alcohol during sleep, it has difficulty getting past light sleep and into the deeper stages.

6 WAYS TO IMPROVE REM SLEEP:

  • Hydrating properly over the course of the day (not before bed, which can disrupt sleep for trips to the bathroom)
  • Warm shower or a steam room before bed
  • Blue-light blocking glasses before bedtime
  • Reading in bed (the old-fashioned way) prior to falling asleep
  • Sleep mask and/or earplugs while sleeping
  • Dairy products can be sleep promoting, and foods with serotonin (cheese / eggs /pineapple) also prompt your body to produce the sleep hormone melatonin
  • Tart cherry juice is high in melatonin itself and is a popular sleep aid
  • Sound machine or other white noise during sleep

Hopefully, these REM sleep tips will help you sleep like a superhero! :)

Episode 158 - What is your reason WHY?07 Jun 202200:08:57

It is 6 months through the year and what are your health goals for the next part of the year?

  • lose inches around your waist?
  • get rid of those unwanted pounds we put on over the last 5-10 years ago?
  • have more energy?
  • have a clear mind?
  • sleep better?

What's even more important is understanding WHY you want to reach those goals?

  • Have the energy to spend time with our kids or grand-kids
  • Be alive to see our kids/grandkids grow up
  • Live a disease free life
  • Not rely on prescription drugs
  • Have more confidence in the bedroom and in day to day activities (golf, gardening, walking stairs...etc)

Reaching these goals are all about taking daily steps and putting TIME on your side!

Position your DAILY ACTIONS so time is working for you instead of against you. Because time will either promote you or expose you.

In today's world, everyone wants to go directly from plant to harvest.  For example, we plant the seed by joining the gym and then get frustrated when a few days go by and there's no fitness harvest (strength gain).

You must plant (join the gym), cultivate (consistent actions over time - workout 3-4 times a week) and finally you harvest (build strength)

So what daily actions can you start taking today to put you on the right side of the success curve and what is your WHY?

Have a great week!

Episode 77 - How Many Carbs Should You Eat?17 Aug 202100:09:13

The ideal amount of carbs to consume can vary from person to person. On a Ketogenic diet, daily carb intake should typically fall between 30-50 grams. (5-15% of macronutrient intake)

- That # can change depending on your level of physical activity, how insulin sensitive you are, degree of keto-adaption you are and how long you fast for on a daily basis.

- When you weight train and fast for periods of time you deplete your glycogen quite rapidly and you can get away with higher carb consumption without jeopardizing ketosis.

- Every day consumption of carbs could fall between 10-30 grams and on harder workout days you can go up to 50-100 grams

- Short periods of zero carb carnivore (nose to tail) can be beneficial for gut health especially if you are sensitive to lectins/anti-nutrients in vegetables

- Integrating plant foods strategically for glycogen reloading to improve insulin sensitivity, optimize thyroid and adrenal function might be necessary for certain individuals

Here are some healthy/less toxic carb options:

Avocados, Dark Chocolate (80% higher cacao), Raw Honey, Fermented Foods, Seaweed, Seasonal Fruits, Occasional Nuts (sprouted), and Sweet Potatoes/Squash

Eating nutrient dense nose-to-tail foods are an ideal strategy. This, along with occasional (and tolerable) plant foods, is a great place to start!

Episode 102 - How alcohol affects your appetite, fat loss goals, and athletic performance!23 Nov 202100:07:56

Alcohol inhibits lipolysis (fat burning) and glycolysis (glucose burning) because it is the first to burn.

"First to burn," meaning you will process ingested alcohol calories first, delaying the burning of other fuels until the alcohol has been metabolized.

As far as appetite - We all know that alcohol gives you the munchies, triggering an area of the brain that controls hunger. And when you do eat, those calories are more likely to be stored as fat. When alcohol is consumed in conjunction with carbohydrates, such as in most mixed drinks (daiquiris, margaritas, etc.), carbohydrate metabolism is put on hold while the alcohol calories are burned.

Alcohol can also detract from fat loss goals by contributing empty calories (that you will burn before tapping into stored body fat), interfering with other ingested calories (promoting the conversion of ingested carbs into fat), and like mentioned earlier increasing appetite.

If alcohol is to be consumed, it is best consumed alone to mitigate fat storage concerns, and, of course, in a moderate manner.

Alcohol can also compromise athlete performance and recovery in varied ways. It can mess with your deep sleep cycles, and the critical hormonal processes (such as the release of Human Growth Hormone during deep sleep) that repair and rejuvenate your body for the next day.

As long as you aren’t looking to lose weight, a modest drink here or there shouldn’t make much of a difference. If you’re looking to lose weight, however, I would suggest avoiding alcohol altogether.

If you are going to have a drink - don’t make a mixed drink and reach for a high quality Tequila or a rich, high quality organic red wine. Organic red wine boasts higher antioxidant and resveratrol content as well as lower OTA mycotoxin contamination while tequila, when compared to wines, beers, and ciders, contains no carbohydrates, no sugar, and fewer calories.

Episode 148 - Important Heart Disease Blood Tests!03 May 202200:13:13

Get your pen and paper out! Here are a few important blood tests to take to your doctor or a local walk-in lab.

The mainstream medical community emphasizes total cholesterol and total LDL cholesterol readings, and dispenses a prescription statin without digging deeper. An overreliance on this single metric misses the true complexity of heart disease. A better assessment looks at the big picture and includes a range of different tests, such as the following:

 - Triglycerides to HDL ratio

 - Blood Pressure

 - Vitamin D

 - Fasting Blood Insulin

 - HbA1C

 - Triglycerides

 - Hs-CRP

 - Homocysteine

 - ApoB

 - LDL particle size / advanced lipid profile testing

 - Coronary calcium testing

Hope this helps give you an idea of some other important tests to get a true status of your health and heart disease risk. Make sure to test, not guess!

Have a great day!

Episode 142 - What's the Difference Between Keto and Paleo?12 Apr 202200:12:53

This week I discuss two diet styles that have grown in popularity - Keto and Paleo. What are they? How are they different? Which one is right for you? As you will hear, they are very similar to one another. One thing is certain, if your diet focuses on whole foods you can't go wrong!

Paleo is composed of meat, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and tubers. In general, eating Paleo means eating foods our ancestors ate. Paleo disallows grains, legumes, processed foods, added sugar, and (sometimes) dairy. These foods tend to trigger inflammation, especially in the gut.

The Keto diet is a very low-carb diet designed to promote a metabolic state called ketosis. In this unique state, the body runs primarily on fat and ketones for energy. It's all about self-experimentation and finding out what works best for you. Personally, I am probably a combination of both of these eating styles.

I hope this episode helps to clarify both diets and helps lead you down the right path to optimize your health! Have a great day!

Feel free to email me at brian@briangryn.com with any questions concerning these diets along with any other health and wellness related questions you might have, I'd love to hear from you!

Episode 57 - Steps to Improve Gut Health08 Jun 202100:10:13

Gut health has become a hot topic lately, with research indicating that the state of the bacteria in the intestinal tract influences many elements of health.

Poor gut health is revealed by digestive conditions such as constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea, and acid reflux.

The gut is home to 100 trillion microorganisms in the form of bacteria and yeast, also called flora. The body depends on this flora to help regulate immune function, digestion, and intestinal mechanisms, and to help defend against infection and inflammation.

The immune system in particular depends upon a healthy balance of bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, a state characterized by a predominance of "friendly" bacteria over the "bad" bacteria that can cause illness.

What could cause poor gut health?

Poor dietary habits (processed foods), environmental stressors (i.e. pollution), and adverse lifestyle practices (too much stress, not enough sleep, etc.) can cause harmful bacteria to override the GI tract.

Poor gut health could also cause issues outside of the intestinal tract such as  allergies, asthma, acne, migraines, psoriasis, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, autoimmune disorders, and systemic inflammation.

This goes to show you the importance of focusing on gut health!

Gut bacteria account for approximately 80 percent of the immune system as well, plugging up holes in the gut lining so that pathogens can't enter and spread infection!

Steps to take to improve Gut health:

Reduce your intake of processed foods

Foods such as deli meats, cakes, biscuits, and chips are more likely to contain preservatives, emulsifiers and artificial sweeteners that may contribute to inflammation in the digestive system and have been linked to certain types of cancers such as stomach and colon cancer.

Limit alcohol consumption

Whilst small amounts of alcohol may have some health benefits, excessive consumption has been shown to harm gut health by causing inflammation in the lining of the digestive tract. Alcohol can also delay the digestion process and contribute to the growth of bad bacteria.

Slow down

Digestion starts in the mouth! Taking the time to slow down and chew your food properly is a very simple yet important aspect of good digestion and can also help to ensure you are extracting as much of the nutrients as possible from the food you’re eating. Eating in a calm, stress-free state can also help to ensure you’re properly breaking down food, and reduce symptoms such as diarrhoea or constipation.

Add Probiotics

Healthy intestinal flora is promoted by the consumption of probiotics, which are healthful living organisms present in certain foods that, when consumed, take up residence in your digestive tract. Fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, pickles, kimchi, and fermented soy products (miso, tempeh).

Add Resistant Starch to your diet

Resistant starch boosts the integrity and function of your gut, flushes away harmful microbes, and even contributes to satiety. Recent research from the University of Toronto showed that supplementation with resistant starch decreased hunger and reduced subsequent food intake.Try taking concentrated sources of resistant starch such as potato starch, tapioca starch, or plantain flour, or emphasizing foods that are very high in resistant starch, such as green bananas, and or Cooked-and-Cooled Potatoes.

However, some people (especially those with compromised gut health) may want to proceed with caution, as it's possible to succumb to gastrointestinal distress (gas, bloating, constipation) from the sudden alternation in typical dietary habits. If you experience any digestive distress as you attempt to add potato starch or other resistant starches to your diet, reduce intake for a while.

Episode 59 - Is Snacking Beneficial?15 Jun 202100:10:59

Trends in America show that in the 1970s people were mostly eating 3 meals a day — breakfast, lunch, and dinner. By 2004, people were eating closer to 5 to 6 times per day and the trend has continued to 2020.

Controlling blood sugar and insulin is key to optimal health and having sustained energy throughout the day. Keeping glycemic variability to a minimum will help prevent type 2 diabetes and avoid crashing throughout the day.

Here are some common food cravings and what they could mean for you:

When you crave something crunchy like pretzels or potato chips, you could be yearning for salt, which could indicate you are thirsty and need to drink more water.

Sugar releases serotonin, the feel-good chemical, which fires off in your brain. If you’re craving sweets, you may actually need a mood boost.

If you want starchy white carbs like bread, pasta or crackers, your craving comes from the same place as your craving of sweets; your body treats them the same way. If you’re mentally or emotionally exhausted and need a boost, you may crave these calorie-dense foods.

When you’re feeling down, you may crave the foods your parents made for you when you were sick or sad as a child. Chicken noodle soup, meatloaf, lasagna, mac and cheese and mashed potatoes are all examples of heavy comfort foods that you may still believe will make you feel loved.

TIPS To Help with Snacking:

-Eat nutrient-dense satiating meals (as mentioned above). It will be easier to wait longer for your next meal.

-Don’t buy senseless snack food, drink mineral water between meals and close the kitchen between meals.

-Make it a habit to eat your meals at a table.  That way you are not eating in the car, movie theatre, on the couch, and anywhere else.

-Drink Mineral or Sparkling Water when feel hunger coming on.

-Distract Yourself — Go for a walk, play a game or read.

Bottom line is if you want to gain weight eat 4-6 meals per day or if you want to lose weight eat 1-2 meals with minimum snacking. The main idea is to eat less often, not to eat less.  Also, by avoiding frequent snacking and not eating till you are actually hungry, you can normalize your ghrelin levels (hunger hormone).

Episode 33 - What to eat during a day of Intermittent Fasting!16 Mar 202100:10:57

There is not a one size fits all answer but here are some good guidelines to follow as far as eating between fasts. A good goal right off the bat is to focus on having 2 quality meals per day. Stay away from high amounts of processed carbs, grains, industrial meat and dairy. Modern diets typically have lots of calories but not a lot of nutrition.

So start with following these guidelines:

- Cook for yourself

- Quality protein should be the main focus of each meal

- Eating grass fed grass finished nose to tail has tons of nutrients (B vitamins, Vitamin A creatine...etc)

- Eggs, and Wild fish another way to get quality protein and amino acids

- Protein and quality fats won't raise insulin as much and will help prepare you for fasting

- Don't overeat - feel 80% full

- Focus on whole foods that expire

- Cook in ghee, grass fed butter, tallow, avocado oil and coconut oil

- Drink mineral water, tea and black coffee (in moderation)

Eating clean will give you more energy, build muscle, reduce inflammation, keep your insulin levels low and make fasting a lot easier.

If you are looking to get started with intermittent fasting check out 21dayfastingchallenge.com to help make fasting a lifestyle change. Have a great day!

Episode 132 - What NOT to Eat08 Mar 202200:14:05

This week I discuss 4 food items we should avoid when doing intermittent fasting. Avoiding the bad could be more critical than adding the good. When you avoid these items it will make fasting that much easier.

1. Refined Carbs - Processing foods lowers the nutrient density of it and increases glycemic load and inflammation.

2. Sugar - table sugar is bad and it's added to almost every packaged food imaginable. Even "healthy meal replacements'' or low carb bars have hidden sugars as well.

3. Veggie Oils / Trans Fats - Highly inflammatory and high in Omega 6's! Surprised at how many "healthy" or organic foods are packed with bad oils.

4. Artificial Sweeteners - Despite non-calorie content it still can raise insulin and make you crave more sweetness. Avoid aspartame, sucralose, saccharin, ACE K and sugar alcohols.

Start with this list and you will be surprised how much it cleans up your diet! Enjoy the rest of your week and see you on Friday!

Episode 373 - Say goodbye to stubborn belly fat! Here's how!09 Jul 202400:07:15

This week I go through my 5 steps to help you burn belly fat as you age! The following steps can help improve overall health, reduce visceral fat, and set individuals on the path to success.

Here they are:

  • Increase non-exercise activity thermogenesis to burn more calories throughout the day.
  • Decrease stress through daily meditation to regulate cortisol levels and prevent weight gain.
  • Build muscle with resistance training to increase resting metabolic rate and burn more calories.
  • Replace processed foods with whole single ingredient foods to improve overall health and promote weight loss.
  • Implement a hard stop on eating three hours before bed to improve digestion and prevent weight gain.

Be sure to start with one at a time and implement it over a 15-30 day period until it becomes habitual. If you have any questions please let me know.

Have a great day!

Episode 263 - Don't Stop Moving: The Science Behind Moderate Intensity Walking Exercise for Overweight or Obese Individuals20 Jun 202300:09:41

In this episode, I discuss how incorporating walking into your daily routine as a low-impact and achievable form of physical activity can support health and well-being.

Many studies have shown that walking is one of the most effective ways to reduce abdominal fat (in particular visceral fat that lays around your abdomen), improve insulin resistance (become more insulin sensitive), and reduce serum cytokines (inflammatory markers).

Lastly, walking induces chemicals in the brain that promote feelings of happiness and well-being, which can reduce stress and anxiety.

Hopefully today's episode will inspire you to get outside, enjoy some great weather and start walking! Oh and bring someone with you as well!

Episode 227 - What I Eat in a Day!14 Feb 202300:21:35

Today I discuss a typical day of eating for myself and the reasoning behind it!

I have been adding in more whole food carbs (mainly fruit) into my diet to see how it helps me perform and recover. I also have been eating more calories (500 to 700) by implementing a third meal into the day as well. My main goals have been around maximizing my cellular energy and making sure to not overdo certain stressors like low carb and fasting.

I have been low-carb and fasting for years and it was a great journey but over the past 4-6 months I wanted to see how I performed with additional calories and carbs. So far so good and I wanted to give you the rundown of a typical eating day for me! I will put links below regarding some of my favorite foods that I utilize during the day. Hope you enjoy this episode and let me know what you think!

Episode 209 - Workout Routine for the New Year!06 Dec 202200:07:46

This week I wanted to talk about my resistance training regimen over the years and how it has progressed.

Perhaps this will give you a blueprint that you want to follow or just get you motivated to get back in the gym! When I started lifting I did a 3 workout split per week (chest/arms, back/shoulders, and legs) which worked well for me and allowed for sufficient recovery and consistency. As I have progressed through the years I wanted a way to increase the volume/frequency of my workouts with an emphasis on increasing hypertrophy as I continue to age. I was inspired by my interview and research by Eugen Loki @pheasyque

This is my current routine:

12-20 hard sets per muscle group (i.e. 6 sets per bodypart per workout)

4 weekly training sessions

A(upper body) - B(lower) - rest/mobility/yoga day - A(upper) - B(lower)

2 times per week for each muscle group

48 hours of rest between muscle groups

I have found that this routine has worked well with my current lifestyle. It has resulted in increased hypertrophy and gives enough time for recovery between workouts so that I'm not overtrained and burnt out.

Let me know if you have any questions about building a routine to fit your lifestyle and goals! Send me an email to brian@briangryn.com

Have a great week!

Episode 31 - Benefits of Cold Exposure09 Mar 202100:05:51

Adding cold exposure either through showers or plunging in a tub is a great way to become stronger both mentally and physically. This is something that I have added into my routine and it's a game changer! Don't do cold exposure if you are over stressed or sick. Do it when you are healthy and feeling good.

Here are some reasons to add cold exposure into your life:

- Promotes focus, vigilance, attention and mood

- Decrease inflammation

- Strengthen immunity

- Activates brown adipose tissue which improves mitochondrial functioning, metabolism and thermoregulation

- Increases mental toughness by getting out of your comfort zone

Start small either through showers and/or plunging for 30 seconds once or twice a week and build from there. Also, focus on deep breathing for the first 30 seconds to a minute.

I definitely recommend adding this to your routine along with fasting and exercise!

Episode 97 - Void These Items from Your Kitchen02 Nov 202100:09:28

There is a common ingredient in the Standard American Diet and it’s wreaking havoc on our health.

They’re found in heavily processed snack or frozen foods, deep-fried menu items, baked goods (chips, crackers, cookies, etc.), margarine-type spreads, and bottled vegetable oils (canola, corn, safflower, etc.). They’re also arguably the most dangerous items you can eat.

----Refined high-polyunsaturated vegetable/seed oils

Excess intake of these vegetable oils, which comprise predominantly omega-6 fatty acids, contribute to systemic inflammation

When exposed to heat, these oils oxidize, contributing even further to inflammation and free radical damage. Refined vegetable/seed oils are so unstable that they can start to oxidize when exposed to air, light, or moisture.

Accordingly, ingesting these agents promotes oxidative (free radical) damage to cells and tissues inside the body. Over time, free radical damage causes premature aging, skin disease, heart disease, liver damage, immune dysfunction, and even cancer.

Upon eliminating refined vegetable/seed oils and dangerous chemically altered fats, you can then cook with temperature-stable saturated fats that will not oxidize. These include coconut oil, butter/ghee, animal fats (bacon grease, lard, etc.). Olive oil and avocado oil are also great options for cooking and dressing your food.

These are the items to eliminate from your kitchen first:

  • Bottled vegetable/seed oils (canola, cottonseed, corn, soybean, safflower, grapeseed, and peanut oils)
  • All foods containing refined high-polyunsaturated oils and especially partially hydrogenated trans fats. Read the labels on any foods that come in a box, jar, bottle, or bag. You’ll be shocked at how many products contain these sneaky oils.
  • Buttery spreads and sprays (Smart Balance, Promise, Country Crock, I Can't Believe It's Not Butter)
  • Margarine
  • Vegetable shortening/Crisco

Episode 19 - This Hormone Can Help You Reach Your Weight Loss Goals26 Jan 202100:06:01

Have you ever noticed that once you start eating it just leads to more and more eating?!

Well let me introduce to our new friend called Ghrelin. Have you ever heard of it?

It is the hunger hormone!

It is termed the 'hunger hormone' because it

-stimulates appetite,

-increases food intake and

-promotes fat storage.

Ghrelin causes those stomach rumblings as a physical reminder to eat.

This is an important hormone to understand and control in order to reach our weight loss goals.

So, if you want to lose weight on a long term basis, you need to bring down Ghrelin.

One would think that in order to bring down hunger we should eat/graze all day but the answer is actually the opposite - fasting!

Main points we should take from a study done on ghrelin by Society of the European Journal of Endocrinology 1

-Ghrelin levels are lowest first thing in the morning (9AM) which is the longest time of the day where you have not eaten (fast through the night) - proves the point that hunger is not a function of 'not having eaten in awhile'

-Hunger comes in waves - 3 slight peaks of ghrelin levels (lunch, dinner and next day's breakfast) but then it goes back down after 2 hours even if you don't eat. Think of a time when you worked right through lunch and didn't even realize it.

-Over the day of fasting, ghrelin levels stayed stable or decreased! Eating nothing over 24 hours made you no more or less hungry than when you started.

-It might be concluded that the secretion of ghrelin is subjected to processes of classical conditioning (i.e. Pavlov's dogs)

So Ghrelin, our main hormonal mediator of hunger does not increase to crazy levels from Intermittent or extended fasts (it actually decreased!). One would think you would be ravenously hungry after fasting but usually the opposite is true and the hunger disappears.

So perhaps it's time to mix things up if you have been trying the same thing and getting the same result?!?

Remember - this is not calorie restriction (eating small amounts throughout the day) - this is going periods with no food but when you eat you can have a full, satisfying meal and then go back into fasting mode :)

Have a great rest of the week :)
