The Alliston & District Humane Society (ADHS) has been serving the community since 1988, providing shelter and care for stray, unwanted, and neglected animals across several townships. Operating a no-kill policy for adoptable animals, ADHS runs a comprehensive range of programs, including a dog, cat, and small animal adoption service, as well as a feral cat neutering program. The shelter is supported by volunteers and medical staff and offers humane education and wildlife services to the community. Since opening their first permanent facility in 2010, ADHS continues to be a vital resource for local animal welfare.

Emily's journey into dog training began after rescuing an aggressive dog named Zip, which inspired her to pursue formal education in applied animal behaviour at the University of Washington. With her extensive experience in the veterinary field and certifications like Karen Pryor and Fear Free, Emily is committed to helping overlooked dogs in shelters get the behavioural support they need to increase their chances of adoption.

1. You’ve had a life of adventure with animals with travel and schooling across the globe. How did you end up in Australia and what was your time there like both in vet school and in practice? Is it remarkably different from BC?

4. What constitutes ‘holistic’ varies from person to person. What does holistic veterinary work look like to you?
5. The world of nutrition (for both pet and humans) is highly charged with emotionally powerful beliefs. The same is true when it comes to holistic vet care vs western medicine or our common day vet care. You’ve taken on two really challenging stances – fresh food and holistic wellness – amid a field of peers that typically do not embrace either. What has that journey done to you as a person? Has it been a hardship; have you become stronger? How do you hold on to your beliefs when many around you question them?
