This week on Geek Girl Soup, Susan, Kelly, and Cort dive deep into the Apple TV+ two-part documentary Number One on the Call Sheet. The series honors Black excellence in Hollywood, focusing on the journeys of Black leading men and women who’ve redefined what it means to be at the top. • What it really means to be number one on the call sheet

13.01: It’s a Miracle (Texas)! The 6th Annual “The Leftovers” Rewatch11 Oct 202301:04:20

“Welcome to Miracle National Park, the most populated bordered area unaffected by the Sudden Departure. We hope you leave heartened by this living reminder of the world as it was and what it can be again.”

Don’t forget to keep your wristbands on at all times. Stay out of the swimming hole. And don’t bother the locals!

Guess what. Susan and Kelly took a lil’ ol’ road trip over to Jarden and did, in fact, bother the locals!

Oh, my lord, we found the actual Durst/Garvey and Murphey houses, the fire station, the church, and the courthouse! Unfortunately, the goat-sacrificing diner had shut down. But we found a cozy little café down the street fr lunch. See some photos on the website!

In this episode, we chat with Amelia about her experience watching the first episode. Then we answer some “deep questions” about the series.

And, if you didn’t notice, this episode is the first one of… SEASON 13! Woo hoo! By our rough count, this is episode 583 overall!

Next week: We’re celebrating National Alaska Day! We’ll be watching something along the lines of “The Grey” (max), “30 Days of Night” (AMC+), or “Grizzly Man” (AMZ Prime). We’re also considering two rentable options: “Into the Wild” and the Christopher Nolan version of “Insomnia.”

12.56: Hollywood Legacy Families05 Oct 202301:09:34

After all the kerfuffle last year about the negative connotation of “nepo babies” in the entertainment industry, we thought we’d put a positive spin on Hollywood legacy families.

We don’t choose our parents, right? Sometimes, kids end up being as good as—or even better than—their parents. Not always, of course!

And that’s what we’re discussing in this episode. We take a totally subjective look at some Hollywood legacies. We discuss who made it bigger than their parents, who’s just as good/big as their parents, who’s a great actor, who’s a “fine” actor, and who’s, well, not so great. And we talk about a few films/shows that feature a parent and their kid.

Some examples:

  • Miley Cyrus
  • Jamie Lee Curtis
  • John David Washington
  • Margaret Qualley
  • Alexander Skarsgard
  • Domhnall Gleeson
  • Kate Hudson
  • Kiefer Sutherland
  • Colin Hanks
  • Angelina Jolie

Correction: “Love Story” came out in 1970. I’ve rethought Mariska Hargitay vs Jane Mansfield through the lens of who may be more remembered in 50 years.

Next week:

Can you believe we start season 13 next week with the 6th annual rewatch of HBO’s “The Leftovers”? You can bet that we’ll have new insights and commentary for you. And… we’re even planning a little roadtrip!

12.55: Peter Gabriel Now and Then27 Sep 202300:52:10

We watched the documentary film “Classic Albums: Peter Gabriel - So,” but mostly we’re talking about our favorite PG music and concert moments. And, of course, we just had to watch “Say Anything.” Wouldn’t you?

Kelly saw Peter’s I/o Tour live in Pittsburgh this past weekend. So, we talk about that and how it holds up to his past concerts.

Susan and Kelly are old enough to have fallen in love with Peter’s music during his 1 - 4 phase, also known as Car, Scratch, Melt, and Security. We mostly listened to “4” this past couple of weeks, while Cort mostly listened to “So.”

A few highlights from this episode:

  • “Solsbury Hill” was Peter’s first solo single
  • Due to some confusion, Peter first rejected Cameron Crowe’s request to have “In Your Eyes” for “Say Anything.” Cameron kept pushing because all the other songs he tried totally failed to have the impact he wanted.
  • There were hundreds of variations of the song “In Your Eyes,” pieced together with 96 different versions on multitrack
  • Manu Katché recorded the drums for “Sledgehammer” in one take
  • The Pittsburgh I/o concert was excellent, even most of the new songs (Kelly highly recommends!)
  • “So” producer Daniel Lanois locked Peter in a barn to get him to finish some lyrics
  • “So” was the quickest album Peter had made up to that point in a “speedy” 10 months
  • Four Peter Gabriel songs appear in our beloved series “The Americans”
  • We do not break out into song in this episode (copyright infringement!), but we do share a few lyrics!

Next week: Hollywood Legacy Families!

12.54: Yentl 40th Anniversary23 Sep 202300:43:45

In 1985, Gen X had “Just One of the Guys.” Remember that gem? (We did love it!) Maybe we’ll watch it on its 40th anniversary. But this week we went back to 1983 and watched “Yentl,” same Shakespearean premise of a woman pretending to be a man to succeed in a man’s world.

Yentl is an Ashkenazi Jewish girl living in Eastern Europe in 1907 in a community where women are not permitted to study the Talmud. But her forward-thinking father does indeed teach her the sacred texts. When her father dies, Yentl cuts her hair, leaves town, finds a religious school, and takes on the name Anshel so that she can become a Jewish scholar.

The film is directed by and stars Barbra Streisand. She was even nominated for best director at the 1984 Academy Awards. Mandy Patinkin and Amy Irving also star in the film as fellow Talmud scholar (the former), wife (the later), and dual love interests.

Watch the film on max!

Next week: Kelly is seeing Peter Gabriel’s I/o tour in Pittsburgh, so we’re watching the documentary “Classic Albums: Peter Gabriel - So” on Amazon Prime with ads.

12.52: Hollywood Strike Talk with Erik C. Andersen07 Sep 202300:37:45

Our Hollywood insider, Erik C. Andersen, is back to give us the scoop on the writers and actors strikes that have movies and tv shows at a standstill.

Erik is an Emmy Award-winning editor who has joined writers and actors on the picket line to show his support for fair wages and judicious/limited use of AI in film and tv.

This episode is the full interview Susan and Kelly did with Erik, an excerpt of which you heard in episode 12.51.

In this episode, Erik shares:

  • A clip from the picket line
  • An example of how one actor was barely paid for the use of her likeness in a film
  • Some of the issues of using AI in editing
  • Other insider details about the strikes

12.51: Celluloid Solidarity: Exploring Labor Issues On and Off Screen04 Sep 202301:04:49

We’re celebrating Labor Day at Geek Girl Soup with a few movies and a TV show that explore various working conditions.

We start with the HBO limited series “Telemarketers,” which looks at the horrors both of how telemarketing companies treat their workers, and also how these companies deal with consumers and the “nonprofits” they allegedly raise money for. This is a scrappy little series that had almost no budget. It has original footage from inside one of the earliest scummy telemarketing companies.

We move on to Sally Field in “Norma Rae.” You’ve probably seen this Oscar-winning film in which Norma Rae helps unionize the textile factory where pretty much the entire town works.

We also watched “Up in the Air,” in which George Clooney spends nine months of the years traveling the country firing people.

For fun, we watched “Working Girl” and “9 to 5.” We were disappointed that “Working Girl” pits woman against women. You know, “there can be only one” women in the boys club. Sigh. But yay for the glorious sisterhood of Lily, Dolly, and Jane!

You’ll hear an excerpt of a discussion Susan and Kelly had with Erik C. Andersen, Hollywood editor. We talk all about the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. If you want to listen to our full interview with Erik, it will be out later this week.

Next week: We’re celebrating the start of Hispanic Heritage Month!

12.50: We’re Going Back to the Future!31 Aug 202301:25:13

“Wait a minute, Doc. Are you telling me you build a Time Machine… out of a DeLorean?” Can you believe that we are 8 years past the future in “Back to the Future Part II”?! That’s right. Marty and Doc went to October 21, 2015. Heavy, right?

Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale got FaceTime and flat-screen TVs right. But we still don’t have flying cars or hoverboards. Or do we?

This week, we welcome back Geek Girl Amelia as we discuss her Favorite Films of All Time: “Back to the Future.” We watched a couple of “documentaries” about the “Back to the Future” trilogy.

First up, the real documentary: “Back in Time. This is an excellent look at the cultural impact of the “Back to the Future” trilogy in pop culture. This feature film came out in 2015 for the 30th anniversary of the original film—and in the future year that Doc and Marty went to.

The other “doc” we watched was “Expedition: Back to the Future.” Not really a documentary, this was a set-up with Josh Gates and Christopher Lloyd who are tasked with finding the iconic DeLeorean Time Machine to deliver to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for a fundraiser. Totally contrived but still cute. And we do get a glimpse at the amazing collection of father-son BTTF aficionados Bill Shea and Patrick Shea. If you can imagine it, they have collected it… and then some!

Finally, Amelia shares with us some of the fabulous array of BTTF memorabilia that she has collected over the years. And, yes, she can indeed quote the dialogue verbatim!

Always remember: “The Future isn’t written. It can be changed.”

Happy Hip-Hop-iversary! Geek Girl Soup is celebrating women in hip-hop with “Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop” (Netflix).

This fabulous docuseries delves deep into the history of the impact women have made in hip-hop. We look back at power of Roxane Shanté, MC Lyte, and Queen Latifah. We examine the backlash at Sister Souljah. We discuss the new wave of ladies with Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, and Chika. So many more awesome ladies in the doc, too!

Do check it out!

Next week: We’re going back to the future, which is now in the past! Since we’ve watched the source material more times than we can count, we’re watching a couple of documentaries: “Back in Time” (Peacock) and “Expedition Back to the Future” (YouTube).

14.33: The Serial Killer You’ve Never Heard Of — And the Family that Refused to Stay Silent27 Mar 202501:12:35

—> After listening to this episode, Maria has this say: “I was just thinking about the irony of my podcast interview and how much of what I said is so relevant to mom passing away as we release the film (joy and pain!). And I had no idea mom was going to die.” <—

In this unforgettable episode, we sit down with Maria Semander Crawford to discuss The Empty Chair, a short film that tells the story of her sister Elena’s murder by little-known serial killer Coral Eugene Watts—and the decades-long fight for justice that followed.

This isn’t your typical true crime tale. It’s a deeply personal, emotional journey about grief, advocacy, and how one family refused to be silenced by a broken system. Maria opens up about the day her sister was murdered, the years of legal hurdles her family faced, and the extraordinary activism of their mother, Harriett Semander.

Sadly Harriett passed away just before the film became available to buy. She did see it, though. As much as this story is about Elena, it's more so about Harriett. May she rest in peace.

Along the way, we also discuss:

  • Marvel’s mega-livestream casting chaos
  • The cartoon apocalypse trend (seriously, what are they doing to Mickey Mouse?)
  • TV picks including Happy Face, The Pitt, and more
  • A Looney Tunes movie that surprisingly hits the apocalypse vibes 😆

12.47: Fly the (Not-So) Friendly Skies with Idris!11 Aug 202300:39:12

When you hear the sound of the bell, what does that signify to you? Seat belts can be removed? It’s dinnertime? Or Tio Hector urgently needs to tell you something.

In this episode of Geek Girl Soup, we’re covering seat belts and Tio Hector, that is Idris Elba in “Hijack” and the passing of beloved Mark Margolis. (You can figure out dinner on your own!)

There have been too many deaths in the entertainment industry recently (we’ll talk about William Friedkin next week). We discuss Sinead O’Connor, Paul Reubens, Angus Cloud, and Margolis.

Then we swoon all over Idris in “Hijack” on Apple TV+. We get totally spoilerific for that part (second half). So, you can listen to the first half about everyone who just died and skip Idris if you haven’t watched “Hijack” yet. (What are you waiting for?!

Next week: Cort will be in Houston! We’re watching “Joy Ride,” “Bridesmaids,” and “Girls Trip.”

12.46: Child Actors All Grown UP05 Aug 202300:53:28

Did you know that some of your favorite actors started out in commercials, appeared in TV shows, or jumped right into film when they were mere tots? Of course you did! Today we’re talking about just a few who came to mind—not nearly an exhaustive list!

Some highlights:

  • Reese Witherspoon in “The Man in the Moon,” directed by Robert Mulligan of “To Kill a Mockingbird” fame
  • Ethan Hawke in “Explorers,” also starring River Phoenix
  • Malcolm Jamal Warner in a certain Show
  • Frankie Muniz in “Malcolm in the Middle” and “Big Fat Liar”
  • Will Smith in “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” (does that count? He did start rapping at age 12.)
  • Shannon Dougherty in “Little House on the Prairie” and others

We discuss then and a few from now. That is, a few things we’ve seen them in recently. For example: “The Morning Show,” “The Purge,” “Accused,” and “Emancipation.”

Next week: You’ll hear in the episode that we were planning to discuss films by indigenous filmmakers. We’re pushing that to later in the year. We’ll be chatting about “Hijack” on AppleTV+ (Idris Elba!) and the late Mark Margolis.

12.45: Christmas in July 202328 Jul 202300:20:42

For this Christmas in July, we went a very non-traditional route with our movie choice and watched “The Apology” on Hulu. Thankfully, we also watched “A Storm for Christmas” and “Die Hard,” two actual Christmas shows. We definitely needed something more jovial after “The Apology”!

“The Apology” takes place on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. But this is no Christmas movie. Yes, a gift or two are given. A meal is prepared. Decorations are hung. But no one is festive or celebrating.

And, in the dark and snowy night, just as a 19-years-sober mother-of-a-missing-teen (missing for 20 years) is about to take a drink of vodka, the mother’s former brother-in-law knocks on the door. Oops, his car just happened to break down nearby. Umm.

Actually, he’s stopped by to make an apology. Fun. (Not.)

The movie is really solid, actually, starring Anna Gunn, Linus Roache, and Janeane Garofalo and directed by Alison Locke. Check it out, just not for Christmas.

12.44: Barbenheimer27 Jul 202300:57:21

Last weekend, we were Barbie girls in Oppenheimer’s world! Life’s atomic, it’s so comic. Podcast without a care; listen everywhere! (Sorry, Ice Spice and Nikki Minaj!)

For realz, though. No Barbenheimer double features for us. Cort did see both films. Kelly saw “Oppenheimer” twice. Susan skipped ‘em both. You know, biopics. (Yes, “Barbie” counts as a biopic, ahem.) We do plan on dragging Susan to “Barbie” when Cort is in Houston in a couple of weeks, though!

So, our verdicts? All the love in the world, baby!

Spoilers abound in this episode. We discuss “Oppenheimer” first. We all know that The Manhattan Project was a success and that we dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. So, if you want to hear about the glory of the film, the acting, the directing, the score, the cinematography, and so on, then listen in even if you haven’t seen it… yet. Because you must see it!

If you never plan on watching “Barbie,” go ahead and listen to that part, too. Cort’s discussion will make you want to see it!

Next episode is Christmas in July (sort of.)

Ever since a certain prestige streamer went a bit, shall we say, low-rent, AppleTV+ has soared to the top of our list as our number 1 favorite streaming service. What AppleTV lacks in quantity, it well more than makes up for in quality. And it’s doing it’s damnedest to catch up in quantity!

In this episode, we give you a rundown on:

  • What we’re watching now on AppleTV+
  • What’s coming soon
  • And what you should pull up out of the Apple archives

Starting at 43:17, we talk about the writers and actors strikes that have shut down the film and TV industries. (Go, unions!) We discuss some of the issues the actors are fighting for, including healthcare and not being replaced by AI. Yes, really. Check out this part of the episode to hear all about it.

Next week: “The Apology” on Hulu. Why? It’s Christmas in July!

12.42: Lone Star State of Mind: “Friday Night Lights”15 Jul 202300:52:26

For Kelly’s birthday, we’re in a Lone Star state of mind! I mean, not everything is messed up in Texas, right, y’all? We watched a shoot-ton of episodes of “Friday Night Lights” to get fully in the mood.

This was Kelly’s first time watching, and she had no idea that Jurnee Smollett, Michael B. Jordan, Jesse Plemons, Adrianne Palicki, and Zach Gilford were in it—all actors she loves from other shows/movies!

This show’s got football, gun violence, abortion, and segregation/gerrymandering/redistricting. None of this is unique to Texas, of course. It’s also got young love, crime, inspiring speeches, cheerleaders, babies, engagements, drugs, and “compromise.” (Really, sir?)

Go check this out on Netflix if you’ve never seen it! Clear eyes, full hearts, y’all! (Watch and you’ll understand.)

Next week: It’s everything AppleTV+… our favorite streamer since a certain other streamer became Max. We’ll be sharing everything we’ve been watching there and what’s coming soon.)

12.41: Cape Fear05 Jul 202300:36:49

For the Fourth of July, we decided to watch three takes on one film, part of which happens over July Fourth weekend. We watched the 1962 and 1991 versions of “Cape Fear” and s5 e2 of “The Simpsons”: “Cape Feare.”

Check out our views of the two films: Similarities, differences, scare factor, and cameos. Find out why Scorsese did a remake of this film at all and who was originally attached to direct. See who we think is the “better” bad guy. And discover how “The Simpsons” episode compares to the films!

Next week: It’s Kelly’s birthday, Kelly’s choice! Since she just moved back to Houston, she’s feeling all Texas-y. So, we’re watching as many episodes as we can of “Friday Night Lights.”

12.40: What's on The Menu?29 Jun 202300:35:38

Even though this delicious film came out seven months ago, somehow Kelly did not get spoiled on the actual meat of “The Menu.” And, don’t worry, we won’t spoil you here. But we do spoil you in this episode!

Anya Taylor-Joy is delightful as pretentious foodie Nicholas Hoult’s “dinner date.” Ralph Fiennes shines as Chef Slowik as he prepares his best dish ever. Not the one you expect.

Judith Light and Reed Birney are totally wrong about the fish. John Leguizamo as the movie should have made a better movie. And Hong Chau is superb as Elsa.

We’re down for the milk snow. Maybe not for the algae. And definitely not for the s’mores. Weird, right? (Unless you know what we’re talking about!)

Next week: We’re celebrating July 4th with “Cape Fear” (1991 on Tubi).

12.39: We Have Questions. The Pope Has Answers.23 Jun 202300:33:56

We have a slew of questions we’d love to ask Pope Francis. Sadly, we did not get the opportunity. But a lucky group of Spanish-speaking young people did in the Hulu documentary “The Pope Answers.”

Listen in as we recap some of their juicy topics and the Pope’s responses:

  • Loneliness and suicidal thoughts
  • Abortion
  • Immigration
  • Sex and masturbation
  • Cell phones (Our most burning question: Does the Pope have one???)

12.38: Tina Remains Simply the Best19 Jun 202300:43:09

Today we celebrate the powerful life of the fabulous Tina Turner. Better than all the rest! Really, what else is there to say about Tina? We have not just a bit more, as does the documentary “Tina” (2021, on Max) that we watched for this episode.

Authorized by Tina, and exec-produced by her widower Erwin Bach, “Tina” takes us into many aspects of Tina’s life—from her childhood to her time with Ike Turner to her massive success as a solo artist and to her finding enduring love with Erwin. You will love Tina even more after watching this doc!

We see a bit of the making of the film “What’s Love Got to Do with It” and why Tina never watched it. We learn what interview questions Tina loathed and how she had hoped her autobiography (written with the late Kurt Loder) would end those questions. Sadly (and understandably), the book fueled them.

Next time: “The Pope Answers” documentary on Hulu.

14.32: Let the Mystery Be — Severance Edition22 Mar 202501:23:40

The theme this week is, obviously, Severance (season 2). But… we spend the first 39 minutes discussing other stuff.

-> Ted Sarandos (Netflix) being a dick about Apple TV+. Two dudes on BlueSky being the best fans ever (after us) about Apple TV+. (We said what they said five years ago.)

-> A few recommendations: Dope Thief (Apple for the win). Adolescence (Netflix, yes, we still like you.)

-> Cort’s Corner, which has now taken over two corners!

-> Then all the spoilers all the time about Severance s2.

If you haven’t finished watching all of s2, you can listen to the first part of our episode. All the laughs. For us anyway.

The title of this episode? If you know us at all, you’ll recognize a nod to The Leftovers, specifically s2. (Ooh, s2 of Severance and s2 of The Leftovers. What does it mean?!?)

We’re not sure what that means. But we chat about all the mysteries, the answers, and the remaining questions about Severance. And guess what. We’re getting season 3, baby! (Hopefully it won’t take three years this time.)

TIMESTAMPS

00:01:00 — Entertainment News & Apple Love

00:10:00 — Recommendations

00:19:00 — Coming Soon

00:20:00 — Fuck a fucking duck

00:38:30 — Comment on how we've been recording for 55 minutes. I can't tell time.

00:39:00 — Severance Season 2 – Deep Dive [SPOILERS start here!]

  • Helly R. and Helena, Mark S. and Mark Scout (and their complicated love triangle with Gemma and Ms. Casey)
  • Cold Harbor and the meaning of reintegration
  • Can Ms Cobel be trusted?
  • The goat. The dance. The band. And of course, Milchak’s rhythm.

12.37: Football Is Life (The "Ted Lasso" Finale?)12 Jun 202300:40:46

It’s been a minute, but we’re finally discussing the season/series(?) finale of Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso.” Is it really the end? Will there be a spinoff? Maybe a continuation?

In this spoilerific episode, we chat about:

  • Nate’s redemption
  • Rebecca’s psychic’s predictions
  • Keeley and Jack and Roy and Jamie
  • Collin’s coming out
  • Rupert’s chilling out
  • And so much more!

We also go off-script, as usual, and discuss:

  • The recent warning from the founders of ChatGPT about human extinction
  • “The Little Mermaid”
  • Kelly’s (mis)adventures in moving

12.36: Searching for the Truth in Air06 Jun 202300:29:55

Susan sat this one out since Cort and Kelly are discussing a biopic. We’re chatting about the movie “Air,” about the creation of the Air Jordan shoe and signing Michael Jordan to the fledgling Nike basketball division.

Susan avoids biopics because they present just one “truth”—and that “truth” may be a fiction. In the case of “Air” (available on Amazon Prime), the story is but one version of many—which we discuss in this episode.

We really enjoyed this film, directed by Ben Affleck and featuring Affleck, Matt Damon, Viola Davis, Jason Bateman, Chris Tucker, Chris Messina, and Marlon Wayans. The soundtrack is awesome. If you were sentient in the 1980s, you will love the music!

12.35: The Finale Show (Not Ours!)02 Jun 202300:49:08

This week, the Geek Girls discuss two series finales and one season finale. It’s the end of HBO’s “Succession” and “Barry” and the season-2 end of Showtime’s “Yellowjackets.”

Succession: Who wins the iron throne? (Wrong show. Or is it?) Do they deserve it? Who gets ousted? Do the White Walkers (er, GoJo) take over? Do Tom and Shiv live unhappily ever after?

Barry: Janice’s dad! Hank (no, not DEA Hank—oh, the irony)! Mr. Cousineau! What happens to young John? What’s with all these flash forwards? (Is this LOST?)

Yellowjackets: Where’s the baby?! Barbecue! Queen of hearts! Ice holes!

12.34 Love to You, Donna Summer24 May 202300:44:28

This week, the Geek Girls discuss the wonderful documentary “Love to You, Donna Summer,” co-directed by Donna Summer’s daughter Brooklyn Sudano and Roger Ross Williams (first Black man to win an Oscar for Best Director—short film “Music by Prudence”). The HBO documentary is an intimate look at Donna’s life behind the glitz of the disco queen.

We read a complaint on Twitter that the doc doesn’t pay enough homage to Donna’s fans. This doc isn’t about her fans. It’s about Donna and who she was as a person.

Based in great part on hours of footage that Donna took of herself and on numerous interviews that Donna gave over the years, the doc shows the multidimensional life of the star offstage. Donna herself says multiple times how her onstage self is a persona. She was an actress playing a part.

We also hear from her daughters and friends about their perspectives of Donna and their relationships with her.

Of course, we get lots of footage of Donna’s performances. We dare you not to get up and dance!

You can watch the doc on… the new streaming service Max. Ugh. Bye bye, HBO Max. Long live HBO.

By the way, the Donna Summer discussion starts at about 21 minutes. Yes, we have a lot of other stuff to chat about first!

Another by the way, Kelly misspells succor at the beginning. Jeez.

Next week… The Finale Show (Not Ours).

12.33 Silo Episodes 1 to 319 May 202300:19:12

Apple TV+ is quickly becoming our favorite streaming service… especially as original favorite HBO Max transitions into Max. (Sigh.) Today Cort and Kelly are chatting about the excellent new series “Silo,” based on the books by Hugh Howey.

“Silo” features David Oyelowo, Rashida Jones, Rebecca Ferguson, Common, Tim Robbins, and Will Patton. The basic story is that we’re in dystopian future where outside is uninhabitable. So, this group lives in a large underground silo built who-knows-when by who-knows-whom. There are strict rules in the silo and harsh punishments for breaking the rules.

The show effectively builds the world for us so that we quickly feel the hope, tension, fear, etc. that the characters experience. And we’re just three episodes in!

We’re releasing this episode on the day that episode 4 of the series comes out. So, catch up, then listen to this spoilerific episode! We’ll be doing a few more episodes to keep up with the series!

12.32: Michael J Fox Still (Always) Has Our Heart17 May 202300:55:25

In this episode, we chat about the wonderful new documentary “Still” about Michael J. Fox. The documentary goes back to his childhood, moves forward through his acting career, and goes deep into his life with Parkinson’s Disease.

Directed by Davis Guggenheim (director of “An Inconvenient Truth”), “Still” finds Michael getting very personal about Parkinson’s—how he was diagnosed, what he did to hide it for so many years, and how he manages it now. We discuss how some documentaries make you feel voyeuristic and “wrong” for watching and how others (like this one) engage you in a freeing and nonshameful way.

The style of this doc is so magnetic, using myriad clips from Michael’s movies and TV shows to mirror what he discusses in the interview. Whatever you already love about Michael J. Fox, you will love even more as you watch this film. We’re now planning a rewatch of the “Back to the Future” trilogy!

The film is available on Apple TV+.

12.31: The Killer Nurse, the Good Nurse, and the Danish Nurse10 May 202300:42:20

Nurses are the real heroes of the hospital. But today we’re chatting about two nurses who killed their patients and the nurses who helped stop them.

We watched the documentary “Capturing the Killer Nurse” and its docudrama counterpart “The Good Nurse” with Jessica Chastain and Eddy Redmayne. Then we watched the docudrama “The Nurse” based on the true story of a Danish nurse who helped stop a killer nurse in her hospital. Yes, spoiler. But there wouldn’t be a series made about it if that killer nurse hadn’t been caught!

We do spoiler everything in this episode. So, listen only if you’ve already watched these Netflix movie and shows or if you just don’t care about being spoiled. They are fascinating stories. We especially loved “The Nurse”—the Danish limited series. Do go watch that one at least!

12.30 Moms of Distinction03 May 202300:56:27

Movie and TV moms: the good, the bad, and the truly despicable. We grew up wishing that certain TV moms were our mom. We’ve watched movies wondering, “Oh, my lord, what is she doing?!”

Today we’re discussing moms of distinction in TV and film: those we love and those we love to hate.

Our official homework this week is “Mommy Dead and Dearest” on HBO Max—the documentary about mom Dee Dee Blanchard and her daughter Gypsy Rose Blanchard. Dee Dee told Gypsy, her doctors, and the world that Gypsy had multiple serious illnesses, lied about her age, overmedicated her, and actually kept her ill since babyhood. Gypsy freed herself from her uber-toxic mom when she had her boyfriend brutally murder Dee Dee. The story was turned into a docudrama limited series in 2019 on Hulu called “The Act,” featuring Patricia Arquette, Chloe Sevigny, and Joey King.

We also discuss some role-model film and TV moms. Some are probably yours, too, especially if you were watching TV in the 1980s! And one of our moms of distinction may surprise you! Think horror movie!

Finally, Cort shares Soap Time, and we catch you up on a few other things we’ve been watching.

12.29 Death Note and the Rise of Kira26 Apr 202300:47:51

“The world is rotten, and those who are making it rot deserve to die.” So states Light Yagami in episode 1 of the Japanese anime “Death Note” after getting acquainted with the notebook of the same name.

What would you do if you happened upon a notebook that would kill anyone whose name you wrote in it? Would you rid the world of evil, as Light claims to be doing? Would you try to destroy the book? Give it back to Ryuk, the Shinigami death god? Lock it away so that no one else could use it for evil?

The Geek Girls have fun chatting about this series—with an audio clip from Geek Guy Chris!

12.28 Tainted Meat: David Choe Ruins "Beef" PLUS the Ridiculous Fun of "Cocaine Bear"21 Apr 202300:54:20

We had to scrap the episode we had previously recorded on the Netflix series “BEEF” after we learned about the David Choe scandal. So, we’re replacing it with a discussion of the Choe incident(s) and a blow-by-blow of the “Final-Destination”-esque deaths in “Cocaine Bear.”

In 2014, on his podcast DVDASA (Double Vag, Double Anal, Sensitive Artist), Choe admitted to “rapey behavior” and said that “the thrill of possibly going to jail” was a turn on for him. (Nice.)

Previous to that, some 23 years ago, Choe wrote the following in an open-letter, cuss-y tirade to people in the comics industry (Choe is also a graffiti artist and was working on comics for Marvel at that time):

“I’ll donate it to some r**ards or the special Olympics organization, you know, the real ‘mutants,’ the f***ers with the real genetic disorders.” (Um, yeah.)

Should the casting directors and show runners of “BEEF” have vetted him better before hiring him? Why haven’t Netflix, the show runners, and stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong made statements about Choe’s words yet? We talk about this and more.

In the light, happy part of this episode, we chat all-things “Cocaine Bear”—now streaming on Peacock! Oh, my lord, what ridiculous fun, inspired by the true story of a black bear that ate a bunch of cocaine but killed no one.

This is Ray Liotta’s last film. We do not hear Isaiah Whitlock, Jr., say “shiiiit.” O’Shea Jackson, Jr., gets to kick ass in a park bathroom. Keri Russell wears the most ‘80s of outfits ever. Matthew Rhys and character-actress Margo Martindale die spectacular deaths. And Rosette gets a happy ending!

12.27 "Introducing Brian Broome" with Filmmaker Chris Ivey12 Apr 202300:48:01

Y’all know how much we love documentaries. Today we’re discussing the hilarious, profound, and deeply moving “Introducing Brian Broome” with producer and director Chris Ivey.

The film is based on Brian Broome (duh!), Pittsburgh-based award-winning author of the memoir Punch Me Up to the Gods. It is a series of intimate conversations with other Black Pittsburgh creatives, including:

  • Deesha Philyaw, award-winning author of The Secret Lives of Church Ladies (Y’all remember Deesha when we interviewed her about her book, now being made into a series for HBO Max!)
  • Damon Young, columnist and author of What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Blacker
  • Vanessa German, citizen artist and creator of the photo series The Blacks

Interspersed among the conversations are a few fabulous dramatic/comedic reenactments. You will love them!

Awesome quote: “There is no thing in the world that is more important than you living the life that you want to live.” —Brian Broome

While the film is ostensibly about Brian, we also get a peek at this defining moment in time as some of these creative geniuses are getting ready to leave Pittsburgh—once ranked a top “livable” city in the United States, but not for Black people. Chris Ivey—who is known for bringing a keen and unflinching eye to urban issues, such as gentrification in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh and the Grenfell Tower fire in London—also uses this film to shine a spotlight on a city that has never supported its Black artists.

While we do share spoilers in this episode, feel free to listen even before you watch the film. You’ll be falling all over yourself to watch if you haven’t yet!

You can rent the film on Amazon or Vimeo.

12.26 Something is Risen: "Midnight Mass"07 Apr 202300:52:20

It’s Easter weekend, and you know what that means… our second annual (?) rewatch of Mike Flanagan’s “Midnight Mass”!

This episode is dark and full of spoilers as we discuss some details of this Netflix limited series. We also delve into some questions we have about Christianity and religion in general. Such as:

  • Is the fixation on Good Friday part of a death cult?
  • Will we recognize Jesus when he returns?
  • What if Jesus returns as a woman or a trans person or a person of color?
  • If Jesus’ message was “love they neighbor,” then why aren’t we doing that?

What does all of this have to do with “Midnight Mass”? Watch it and listen in to find out!

He is risen, for y’all who celebrate!

Chag Sameach, for y’all who do Passover. (Yeah, more of those islanders in “Midnight Mass” should have that!)

And happy listening to all y’all!

Check out last year’s episode here.

12.25 Reality Geeks: Small Deck Energy01 Apr 202300:26:11

Introducing the newest show in the Geek Girl Soup network: Reality Geeks. With the new show, we present a new cohost, Catherine. Like Susan and Amelia, she feels no guilt watching some of the “trashy” reality shows like 90 Day Fiancé, Below Deck, Real Housewives, and more.

In this premiere episode, we break down the trailer (frame-by-frame) for the new Below Deck: Gulf Coast series based in Galveston. We saw a few familiar faces among the crew and can’t wait to see the full season starting soon. Join us for week to week coverage with your espresso martinis and thoughts on the debauchery.

12.24 Luther: The Fallen Sun29 Mar 202300:46:24

Idris is back, baby! Yes, we’d love more of Luther than just a two-hour and 9-minute movie. But this totally worked!

“Luther: The Fallen Sun” brings back Idris Elba as our favorite bad-boy DCI John Luther. We also get the exquisite Cynthia Erivo as DCI Odette Raine and the most excellent Andy Serkis as literal bad guy David Robey.

As the IMDb synopsis indicates (so, not a spoiler!), Luther gets sent to prison, breaks out a prison, then goes on a hunt to find a “sadistic serial killer who is terrorizing London.”

Does Luther catch his man? Does he butt heads with DCI Raine? Who else gets caught in the crossfire?

12.23: Women Directors: The Woman King and Women Talking22 Mar 202300:47:18

Just because the Oscars didn’t recognize any women directors this year doesn’t mean there weren’t awesome films made by women in 2022. This week, Kelly and Cort discuss two of our favorite films of 2022 that were directed by women: “The Woman King” and “Women Talking.”

“The Woman King” was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and wasn’t nominated for even a single Academy Award.

“Women Talking” was directed by Sarah Polley, was nominated for two Oscars, and won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Spoilers abound in this episode!

12.20: Reflections on the Spirit Awards and a Look Ahead to the Oscars08 Mar 202300:37:34

Geek Girl Soup is your source for the latest news on the Spirit Awards and the Oscars! Join hosts Susan, Kelly, and Cort as we recap the Spirit Awards and make predictions for next week’s Academy Awards.

We discuss all-things-“Everything Everywhere All at Once” and celebrate Stephanie Hsu’s first individual win! We’re thrilled that “Women Talking” won the Robert Altman Award and are disappointed that Jeremy Pope and “The Inspection” went away empty-handed.

We ponder how shows such as “Severance,” “Station Eleven,” and “Abbott Elementary” were considered “independent” when they seemed to be back by bid studios. What do we know?

For the Oscars, we share our opinions on why “The Fablemans” and Spielberg may take Best Picture and Best Director awards, and why we’re hoping “Women Talking” will win Adapted Screenplay.

Quotes:

“If anyone else had won that award, that would have been my Denzel versus Al Pacino moment.”

“It's like, ‘You'll be working soon.’ ‘But I need the insurance now just in case. That's the point of it.’”

A few highlights:

  • The Bullitt Frontier Whiskey Producer’s Award/Ad
  • What makes a film or TV show “independent” and the voting guidelines of Film Independent (we’re all voting members)
  • Best Actor speculation for the Oscars (Brenden vs Colin)
  • Ke Huy Quan’s incredible comeback story and his year without health insurance
  • The New Scripted and Non-Scripted Series at the Spirit Awards
  • Award Recognition for Everything and Stephanie Hsu's Performance

12.18 This Is Not a Soap Opera Podcast22 Feb 202300:39:05

This week, when we’re not chatting about Cort’s soap opera and whomever Sprina is kissing now, we’re loving on two films that we watched for the Film Independent Spirit Awards: “The Inspection” and “Bruiser.” Coincidentally, they both feature the theme of toxic masculinity, shown from two different perspectives.

“The Inspection” is based on a true story and stars Jeremy Pope and Gabrielle Union. It is written and directed by Elegance Bratton, the story on whom the film the based and whose character Pope plays in the film. Bratton was a “troubled” teen and was estranged from his mother. He joined the Marine Corps, which ended up being more difficult for him than for the average Marine because he’s gay.

Pope, who was recognized at the 2023 Golden Globes by Ryan Murphy, stands out in this role and gives a deeply heartfelt performance. As of this posting, the film is rentable.

“Bruiser” is the story of 14-year-old Darious (played by Jalyn Hall) who is caught between his father (played by Shamier Anderson) and an enigmatic and charismatic stranger (Porter) who suddenly shows up in his life (played by Trevante Rhodes). It turns out that his dad and Porter have a complicated history, as do Darious and Porter. Darious is severely lacking in positive role models.

The film is Miles Warren’s directorial debut. It is currently available on Hulu.

All this sounds pretty serious, and the films definitely are. But y’all know us. I don’t think anyone has ever asked us “why so serious?” 🤣

14.30: Oscars 2025: The Good, the Bad, and the Brooches06 Mar 202501:20:40

Hollywood’s biggest night has come and gone, and we’re here to break down everything—from the jaw-dropping wins to the record-breaking speeches, the best-dressed stars, and, of course, those iconic brooches.

This week, Susan, Kelly, and Cort are joined by our annual Oscars expert, Erik C. Andersen, to discuss the unexpected wins, the indie film takeover, and Conan O’Brien’s hilarious hosting.

Timestamps & Highlights

[00:00:00] Welcome Back, Erik! – A Geek Girl Soup Oscars tradition! Plus, a little love for soap operas before we get to the main event.

[00:04:00] Adrien Brody Sets a Record (And Not in a Good Way) – Five minutes and 40 seconds of speech? Make it stop.

[00:06:00] The Indie Film Revolution – This year’s Oscars had a record number of indie wins. Anora cleaned up, The Brutalist made waves, and Flow got Latvia its first-ever Oscar!

[00:10:00] Best Bit: The Sandworm – The Dune visual effects may have won an Oscar, but that Sandworm gag stole the show. (Also, we know the guy inside it!)

[00:14:00] Kieran Culkin, Oscar Darling – He’s hilarious, he’s talented, and he keeps winning awards.

[00:18:00] Mick Jagger, Elton John, and the Music Industry at the Oscars – A rock ‘n’ roll takeover!

[00:23:00] No Other Land: The Speech That Mattered Most – A powerful moment from the Best Documentary winners.

[00:30:00] The Best Fashion Moments – Coleman Domingo’s perfection, Halle Berry’s disco-ball dress, and brooches galore!

12.17 The 2023 Soupy Bowl!15 Feb 202300:54:27

This year, like some magical, multidimensional kismet, the Soupie Awards took place on Superb Owl Day. Naturally, we turned the occasion into the 2023 Soupy Bowl—an awards show with musical halftime extravaganza!

This being an audio-only podcast, you won’t get to see the dancing zombies. But you will hear the awesome music they danced to. Use your imagination, dude. It was a wonder to behold!

Back this year is the Soupie’s oldest and most prestigious award: The Kelly Smith Memorial Binge-Watching Award. (No, Kel’s not dead.)

Susan changed her award to the Susan Memorial WTF Did You Just make Me Watch award. And we’ve got the Cort Memorial Horror Award: I Am Just Horrified and the Lights are Staying on Tonight!

These ain’t no Golden Globes! Listen in to check out the other awesome awards!

We get just a tad spoiler-y in this episode as we chat about this freakin’ adorable film, featuring Jenny Slate and Isabella Rossellini. We watched it with the Film Independent Spirit Awards. You can now rent it! (Go do that!)
