This podcast episode is dedicated to the most recent findings of the James Webb Space Telescope, which seemed to indicate that the abundance of very massive galaxies, very early on, are at odds with the standard theory and might require a higher value for the age of the Universe or a different cosmological theory.

This kind of observation is not new - in fact, with my first paper I studied how observations of early massive galaxy clusters could be used to study alternative theories of the Universe.

In the last months, one of the first randomized control trial study on  masks  entitled "NORMALIZING COMMUNITY MASK-WEARING: A CLUSTER  RANDOMIZED TRIAL IN BANGLADESH" was published first as a NBER paper https://www.nber.org/papers/w28734  then as a Science article: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abi9069  

Newspapers and media outlets from all over the places celebrated it with  titles such as:   "We conducted the largest study on masks and covid-19: They work" - Washington Post  "Surgical masks reduce COVID-19 spread, large-scale study shows" - Stanford Medicine News  "First randomized trial on masking affirms efficacy, Yale study says" - Yale News  "Huge, gold-standard study shows unequivocally that surgical masks work  to reduce coronavirus spread" - Live Science  

However, is the methodology and the data contained in the paper adequate  enough to back such claims?  Together with Pat Flynn we discuss the major flaws of this study and  raise some concerns on the way the media misrepresented it for political  purposes.

The debate around Covid- containment policies has been shaped from the very beginning by the experts' opinions and (allegedly) science.  However, as data and evidence from all around the world started to gather, it became increasingly clear that the official narrative (namely, that infections grow exponentially until reaching herd immunity, and only strong public interventions such as lockdowns and widespread closure can prevent this) was at odds with the data. 

In particular, data from Sweden, Japan, South-East Asia, US States such as South Dakota and Florida did not align with these predictions. Also a closer look at European countries shows that the policies could not explain the curves' descent, as in most cases, in fact, drops in R(t) or infections can be shown to take place days or weeks before the lockdowns or stricter policies are enacted. Moreover, data on mobility reduction and lockdown stringencies also do not appear to be correlated with infection fatality rates or ICU occupancy.  Keynes once famously said - "I change my mind when the data changes. And you, what do you do sir?"  So, when data and evidence starts pointing to another direction, scientists should do the same. Unfortunately, this did not happen.  Instead, it became increasingly clear that the adherence to the proposed pandemic-reduction policies was not anymore driven by the data but rather by a sort of fact-free religious attachment to dogmas and prejudices under the guise of scientific language.   

At this time, adherence to the strict policy dogma has all the main traits of a religious cult: attachment to a symbol (the mask), the witch hunt i.e. reporting the heretics (people not following the guidelines) to the police, the priestly unquestionable role of the experts (despite their contradictions and failed forecasts), despising the sinners who dare to question the "settled science", continuous denial of evidence and praise of self-inflicted suffering and isolation as a mean to reach "the greater good". Hysteria and messianism have already replaced common sense and rational debate. 

 Gatto and Aleks will discuss from this perspective the current political madness on both sides of the pond.
