Why do some games still look brilliant years later, while technically impressive games can date so quickly?
This week we look at games where art direction did more lasting work than raw graphical power. We revisit The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Shadow of the Colossus, Journey, Ōkami, Limbo, Return of the Obra Dinn, Cuphead and Hades.
From cel shading and ink brushwork to silhouettes, one-bit graphics and hand-drawn animation, we ask what makes a visual style stick.
We also look at newer games and ask which of today’s releases might still turn heads years from now.Which game’s art style has stayed with you, and which current game do you think will age best? Tell us in the comments.

We also look at Microsoft’s patent application for context-aware interruptions in games, Rockstar’s $399.99 GTA VI collector’s box without the game, and the other news on our radar.
Then we share what we’ve been playing, including Control Resonant, Silent Hill: Townfall, Hellraiser: Revival, Retro Rewind and Twisted Tower.

This week, we revisit the launches, policies and business calls that left players asking what the companies were thinking.
From the PlayStation 3’s $599 launch model and the Xbox One’s original online and used-game plans to the Wii U’s muddled reveal, we ask whether these were bad ideas, bad timing or bad communication.
We also debate Nintendo sticking with cartridges for the N64, Sega’s exit from Dreamcast hardware, Guitar Hero overload, Google Stadia and the Vita’s costly memory cards.
Some of these stories ended in a comeback. Others did not.
Which decision would you reverse, and which one do you think gets judged too harshly?
Tell us in the comments, and let us know which blunder we missed.

8 Game Mechanics Modern Games STILL Can’t Beat
vendredi 4 septembre 2026 • Durée 01:00:50
What was the last genuinely NEW game mechanic that blew your mind?
Struggling?
That's kind of the problem.
This week on Gaming Views we're looking back at eight games that introduced mechanics so clever, influential or downright satisfying that — years or even decades later — we're asking whether anybody has actually managed to beat them.
-Portal and the Portal Gun
-Left 4 Dead's invisible AI Director
-Burnout 3: Takedown turning crashing into a reward
-Counter-Strike's single-life rounds and economy
-F.E.A.R.'s terrifyingly convincing enemy AI
-Demon's Souls and its death/retrieval loop
-StarCraft: Brood War's asymmetric factions
-Half-Life 2 turning physics into an actual gameplay language
Along the way we dig into:
• How Portal grew from a student project into one of gaming's greatest ideas
• Why Left 4 Dead's AI wasn't simply trying to kill you
• How Burnout made violence fuel speed
• Why Counter-Strike created a competitive formula still being copied today
• Why F.E.A.R.'s enemies can STILL feel smarter than those in modern shooters
• The mechanic Demon's Souls quietly gave an entire genre
• How StarCraft stayed competitively relevant for decades
• And whether Tears of the Kingdom has finally beaten Half-Life 2's physics
Gamescom 2026 Actually Delivered… And GTA 6 Looks INSANE
mardi 1 septembre 2026 • Durée 01:05:51
Gamescom 2026 is over — and somehow we’ve come away with even MORE games we need to find time to play.
The Witcher 3 is getting a surprise remaster.
Gears of War: E-Day finally looks like the Xbox game we’ve been waiting for. Metro 2039 is dragging us back underground.
Remedy has made Control Resonant even stranger.
Exodus might be the Mass Effect successor we’ve been looking for… and apparently Dungeons & Dragons needed a battle mage throwing furniture at people.
And then Rockstar dropped its huge extended look at GTA 6.One of us had been deliberately avoiding the hype.
That lasted about five minutes.
This week on Gaming Views Pulse, we break down the Gamescom announcements that really caught our attention.

Plus, we throw in a few mechanics that narrowly missed the main eight, including Batman: Arkham Asylum, Resident Evil 4, Super Mario 64, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, Shadow of the Colossus and Tetris.
So here's the question:
👉 What game mechanic has NEVER been bettered?
And perhaps even harder...
What's the most recent genuinely original mechanic you remember playing? Tell us below — because we want to hear the ones we've missed.
