49. Unlocking the Power of the Vagus Nerve with Rebecca Arsena17 Sep 202400:31:46

Have you heard of the vagus nerve? This episode is for you if you suffer from conditions like anxiety, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, migraines and more. A healthy vagus nerve may just be the secret to feeling your best.

Rebecca Arsena is back on the show today. She is a certified functional nutrition counselor and functional medicine certified health coach dedicated to empowering women over 40 to optimize their gut health and get to the root cause of chronic symptoms.

Unlike other coaches who focus on surface level strategies like macro and calorie counting, Rebecca digs deeper because she believes women deserve more than just symptom management!  Her mission is to help women reconnect with their body’s signals and break free from one-size-fits-all nutrition advice so they can heal and thrive!

We learn:

  • How the vagus nerve plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health and well-being
  • Dysfunction of the vagus nerve can lead to various health issues, including digestive problems, anxiety and inflammation
  • Simple and free techniques such as gargling, humming, chanting, prioritizing sleep, social connection and external vagus nerve stimulators can help regulate and improve vagus nerve function
  • Awareness and measurement, such as heart rate variability (HRV) and bowel transit time can be used to track improvement in vagal tone
  • Caffeine and alcohol can have negative effects on the vagus nerve
  • Devices can be used to improve vagus nerve function, but more research is needed
  • Breathing exercises and laughter are simple ways to support the vagus nerve

37. Why Gut and Liver Health Matter for Healing Thyroid and Hormonal Imbalances with Dr. Katelynn Nardulli23 Apr 202400:37:20
This episode is for YOU if you’re curious how gut health impacts your thyroid and hormones. We learn all about the gut hormone connection!  Dr. Katelynn Nardulli is a doctor of chiropractic, functional diagnostic nutrition practitioner, founder of Flourish Wellness Practice and Creator of the Gut Restoration Program. Dr. Kate specializes in gastrointestinal health and shares that hormonal imbalances won’t be fully resolved until gut health is optimal.  We learn: Dr. Kate’s personal story of being diagnosed with thyroid disease (Hashimoto's), the role her gut health played and how this led her to help others. The gut is the second brain and plays a crucial role in managing autoimmune conditions and balancing hormones. Leaky gut, where the gut lining becomes permeable, can lead to an influx of toxins in the body and stress the immune system. Supporting liver and gut health through diet, probiotics, and stress reduction can help manage estrogen dominance and hormonal health. The importance of evaluating and strengthening gut health even if there are no severe or obvious gut symptoms. The GI Map test as a way to assess gut health and identify underlying issues such as leaky gut. Slowing down and practicing deep breathing before and during meals can improve digestion and nutrient absorption. Drinking dandelion root tea or lemon water first thing in the morning can support the liver and balance hormones. Coffee on an empty stomach in the morning has a negative effect on the gut and hormones. Dr. Kate has a special offer for our listeners. It’s $299 off the Gut Restoration Program. Use code FMP. 31. Helping Men Over 45 Lose the Belly and Gain Energy with Kimberly Salzmann12 Mar 202400:28:51

This episode is for you if you have a man in your life who is struggling with his weight and health. Research shows men are less likely than women to get the preventive care they need which can lead to a lower life expectancy.

Kim Salzmann is a functional medicine certified health coach who is helping men 45 and older lose their bellies and take back their health. She was tired of seeing the men around her struggle to lose weight. They would cut calories, drink diet soda or light beer and go to the gym like they did in their 20s. Their go-tos weren’t working anymore and they didn’t feel comfortable asking for help.

We learn:

  • Men over 45 may experience belly weight gain due to insulin resistance and blood sugar imbalances.
  • Calorie counting and excessive exercise are not effective for sustainable weight loss.
  • Managing stress, improving sleep quality, and monitoring heart rate variability are crucial for weight management.
  • Including non-starchy vegetables, balancing macronutrients, and practicing mindful eating are key components of a healthy eating plan.
  • Adding movement after meals can help regulate blood sugar levels and support weight management.
  • Asking for help can shorten the timeframe for making positive changes.
  • Easy tips -- serve 2 vegetables with dinner and roast frozen vegetables for convenience. Move for 10 minutes after meals to lower blood sugar.

46. Picky Eating: Causes and Solutions with Christine Miroddi Yoder06 Aug 202400:55:15

This episode is for parents of picky eaters! Whether you have young children or older teens with limited foods they will consume, we are going to find solutions today.

Christine Miroddi Yoder is a pediatric feeding expert, mindset coach, and owner of Foodology Feeding. She is a thought leader in this field and has developed the concept of Mealtime Mindset, which is a holistic, positive mindset approach to feeding.

Christine has a Master’s in Speech Pathology and has taken over 30 courses in feeding that span from infants with bottle aversion to picky eaters, sensory processing difficulties, nutrition, oral motor, myofunctional therapy, sleep disordered breathing and more!

We learn:

  • Picky eating is different from problem feeding, which is more severe and involves a limited number of foods, fear of trying new foods and difficulty handling mealtimes

  • Processed foods (think chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, breads) may contribute to the rise in picky eating, as they are easier to eat and can lead to muscle weakness and sensory issues

  • How to get to the root cause of picky eating and how food allergies and reflux can play a role

  • Why you should avoid asking children to try new foods or commenting on their eating habits

  • The impact of braces and tongue ties on eating habits and how even adults can have undiagnosed tongue ties

  • The importance of creating a positive mealtime environment and changing both parent and child mindsets around food

  • How looking at foods, infections, toxins and stress all affect hormones and can contribute to the root causes of depression

Dr. Stein is a board-certified psychiatrist and has been in practice for 25 PLUS years. Propelled by her son’s mental health crisis in 2010, she found functional medicine which resolved all his mental health problems as well as her own. She has a busy private practice called Functional Mind LLC in Riverside, RI where she sees patients for functional medicine and psychotherapy.

As a companion to her book, she offers programs to find and reverse all of the root causes of your depression-like symptom. It's a perfect alternative to medication for people with chronic mild to moderate depression-like symptoms that does not respond to antidepressant medications.
