SCIENCE: The astronauts of Apollo 11
Saison 100 · Épisode 33
dimanche 14 juillet 2019 • Durée 29:15
This week on science I continue the month-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11. The three astronauts that were a part of that historic mission, Michale Collins, Neil Armstrong, and Buzz Aldrin, are all known in the annals of history. But there are some things that are not as widely known about the men that went to the moon, and I wanted to highlight each of them on this week's show, and I learned a lot. Like how Michael Collins created the iconic mission logo, or how Neil applied to be an astronaut almost too late, or how Buzz wrote in his doctoral thesis as a student that he wished he could join the astronauts one day.

Launching in 2026 this new mission will put a flying science lab of a rover on Titan to search for signs of life and answers about the origins of the universe.
Then I kick off a month-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, as the newly finished restoration of the historic mission control at Johnson Space Center has been completed.

Joe and Paul DeGeorge are brothers with a shared love of Harry Potter. In 2002 they accidentally started a band and put together a bunch of songs about the magical franchise. Now, Harry and the Potters have toured multiple times, playing many all-ages shows at public libraries across the countries, and they have released four albums, their newest Lumos out now that draws its themes from the seventh Harry Potter book, The Deathly Hallows. They are known for spawning the wizard-rock genre in music and have also co-founded a charity organization The Harry Potter Alliance.

SCIENCE: The oldest Pictish fort
Saison 100 · Épisode 31
dimanche 30 juin 2019 • Durée 14:16
This week on science the oldest Pictish fort has been found in Scotland. The Picts were around in the late iron age and early medieval period, and have left behind Pictish Stones as some of the earliest and best-preserved markers of their existence. The oldest of those stones we have found date back to the 6th century, but this new site is even older and could shed new light on life in eastern Scotland during that time. Then, two new exoplanets have been discovered in the habitable zone surrounding a red dwarf only 12 light years away. Not only could these planets support water, but they also could possibly be breeding grounds for extraterrestrial life in the universe.

SCIENCE: The rings of Saturn
Saison 100 · Épisode 30
dimanche 23 juin 2019 • Durée 18:27
Scientists have been pouring over the data from the Cassini mission and have drawn some new conclusions about Saturn's rings. Details about the tiny moons in the rings are showing that they actually help shape the rings themselves, and the rings have definitive textures that do not overlap, leading to even more questions about they form. These new insights and more on this episode help to frame questions about how our own solar system was formed as well, as more data is analyzed from Cassini.
Also, NASA is getting ready for the next Falcon Heavy launch, which will be bringing a lot more scientific experiments into space. One of these is the new Green Fuel developed by NASA to hopefully replace the toxic rocket fuel used today.
