Champagne run is over01 Sep 202400:48:47

You might have had problem getting Oasis tickets this weekend, but during August Watford didn't have any problems getting a win or two. However, that run of wins came to an end with a defeat at Bramell Lane against the Blades of Sheffield.

Jon, Jordi, Kieran and DCW met to discuss the turning points of the game, Tom Cleverley substitution choices and how the Hornets did going behind to a compariatively strong side. They also grade Gino and Watford's business in the summer transfer window plus Matt Furniss had a chat with Mattie Pollock at this weeks Fan Chat.

4 wins and 1 lose, not a bad place to be as we head in to the first international break

In our first data podcast of the season, Matt Furniss, Watford fan and Opta data guru, returns and joins Jon and DCW to analyses the Hornets start to the season and look at the performances in a slightly different way?

  • What are the chances of Watford getting relegated?
  • Why is Matt excited about new signing, Piere Dwonah
  • And what on earth do stats people mean by/calculate momentum on one of their fancy graphs?
  • Is Mattie Pollock is the player of the season, so far?

Bloomfield Awful + How did we fall out of trust with Gino?08 Oct 202201:08:18

After the second defeat in 4 days, Lionel Birnie joins the podcast to discuss the performance away at Blackpool, which led to a 3-1 defeat against the Tangerines.

And, without the burden of the results on their mind, Jon and Mike discuss the state of our relationship wiith club owner, Gino Pozzo. Where did it turn sour - the merry go round of the Head Cocahes, his transfers vision and execuation or his lack of communication and how little we know about him and this thinking?

It's another From The Rookery End where we try our best to keep a level head when being a Watford fan seems to be very naff.

NOT MAKING THE WEIGHT - Watford 1-2 Swansea05 Oct 202200:39:22

Watford once again struggled to live up to their billing as a heavyweight Championship contender, coming unstuck against Swansea in a game that lasted a marathon 110 minutes.

Of that 110 minutes precious few of them were memorable from a Watford perspective, so it was a tired and dispirited Jon, Colin, Jason and Mike that gathered when the final whistle finally came, running the rule over the latest Vicarage Road false start.

The boys also touch on the slightly happier goings on that took place at Stoke City last Sunday - a game that already feels an age ago - with celebrity Stoke fan Nick Hancock sharing his views on what life can be like lingering in the Championship…

It’s been naother rough one at The Vic, but we haven’t been counted out just yet, and we’re with you through it all. This is From the Rookery End. Come on you ‘Orns.

The Taylor Trek01 Oct 202200:59:31

This weekends podcast is with you a bit early, and looks back on Jon and Mike’s day on the Taylor Trek, which saw them walk 18 miles, starting and ending at Vicarage Road, to raise money for the Watford CSE Trust.

During the walk, the boys were joined by Dave Messenger, who was instrumental in helping Jon and Mike settle on a former Watford XI, with each player having to have arrived with at least an element of excitement, only to go on to have a disappointing Hornets career.

After a difficult week, this is a podcast palette cleanser. Enjoy, and Come on You ‘Orns!

17 Head Coaches, 1 Gino Pozzo26 Sep 202200:42:47

It’s a familiar story, but I’m it’s not the next chapter Watford fans seemed to want. Following the news of Rob Edwards’ surprise sacking, Jon, Jas and Mike gathered to record their thoughts on yet another tumultuous day at Vicarage Road.

Is the decision justifiable? What does it mean for the future? What does it say about the owner? Will all be forgiven if Slaven Bilić guides the Hornets back to the top flight? What should we, as fans, be feeling and doing? We discuss all this and more on the latest in an all too long line of emergency podcasts on this, the brand new From the Rookery End.

Persistent Problems - Watford 2-2 Sunderland 17 Sep 202200:46:06

 PROBLEMS PERSIST

It was another frustrating afternoon for Watford fans, with the Hornets conceding a late goal to Sunderland to end up drawing their fifth match of a stuttering Championship campaign.

Jon, Colin, Mike and DCW were on hand at the final whistle to discuss a whole host of Watford related issues, ending up focussing on the three G’s - the Game, Giaretta and Gino…

Game: After a reasonble start, with Davis leading the line well, where did it go wrong? Were the changes the catalyst for the collapse?

Giaretta: What does his departure mean for Watford and is it a positive?

Gino: Does the buck stop at the top? If so, can he turn it round?

As always, there’s plenty to discuss and we give it our best shot. This is From the Rookery End.

On and off pitch concerns - Watford 2-3 QPR28 Aug 202201:02:12

Mike, Jason and Jordi convene after Watford's 3-2 loss to QPR to pick the bones out of the match and assess what is not quite working for Rob Edwards' side on the pitch at the moment, and there's discussion of the many off pitch issues too as the squad continues to exist in a state of flux ahead of the window shutting next week.

There's also a chat with Adam Leventhal for the latest on the status of Joao Pedro and Ismalia Sarr, plus we hear from Xisco Munoz after Adam caught up with him exclusively for The Athletic last week.

AND with the 100 years of Vicarage Road celebrations about to kick into full gear on Tuesday at the match v Middlesbrough, we hear from Geoff Wicken about the new book he has written to celebrate this landmark date in Watford's history.

ROLL WITH THE PUNCHES - Preston 0-0 Watford20 Aug 202200:47:41

An eventful week in the world of Watford was ended with another point on the road and another clean sheet, although the game at Deepdale was arguably less interesting than off-field developments…

Mike and Jon got together shortly after the final whistle to discuss the Preston stalemate, with praise for a clutch of Hornets, and persisting question marks over others.

In discussing the squad situation, the boys try to get their heads round the situation with transfers; attempting to find a bit of balance during what feels like a tumultuous time.

40th Anniversary Special: Watford at Wembley 198418 May 202401:14:19

This is another special retrospective episode of From the Rookery End.

In these podcasts we take an in depth look back at some of the most pivotal moment in Hornets history, having previously covered the 1997 thrashing of our friends up the M1, the breathless Play Off Semi Final victory at St Andrews in 1999 and of course, our tribute to THAT goal by friend of the podcast, Troy Deeney.

Well, they say you never forget your first time, so on this podcast we are going to make sure, by going back 40 years to the day (if you are listening on release day!) to look at Watford’s first ever appearance in the FA Cup Final.

Of course, the result didn’t exactly go to plan (we don’t think this is a spoiler!) but it was still a historic day, and one which is looked back upon fondly by generations of the Hornets faithful. In this podcast we try to encapsulate what it was like to be a Watford fan during that famous cup run, culminating in that sunny day at Wembley in May 1984.

This show ahs been brought to life by a wide range of contrinbutiors, without whom this simply wouldn’t have been possible, so a huge thanks to Olly and Geoff Wicken, Frances Lynn and Adam Cummings - the voice of Vicarage Road’s Radio Hornet during the 70’s and 80’s.

You’ll also hear from three familiar voices - men who were boys back in 1984 - Matt Rowsson, author Lionel Birnie and our very own Jason Bailey. Thanks to them all for their amazing contributions, which we’re certain you’ll enjoy. It’s 1984, and thi is From the Rookery End.

A Fixer Upper - Blues 1-1 Watford17 Aug 202200:42:07

With Watford’s season four games old, Mike and Jon are joined by author, journalist and Hornets fan Lionel Birnie to take a look at the latest away performance, alongside a wider look at the state of Watford’s squad.

Lionel reports back from a wet and rather sorry looking St Andrew’s, where Ray Manaj secured a deserved point for Rob Edwards’ men, before turning his attentions to the currwnt situation at WD18, with the help of a few decorating analogies on the way…

It’s a slightly unsettling time to be a Watford fan, with the transfer window ajar and letting in a troubling draught, so kick back and relax as we try to make sense of it all.

There’s never a dull moment. Let’s enjoy it as best we can. Come on you ‘Orns.

REWIND: One tense night in Birmingham15 Aug 202200:22:21

As Watford fans head back to St Andrews for an early season, Championship fixture, we thought we'd replay a documentary we made during the lockdown season about Watford's Play Off Semi Final win against Birmingham City, in 1999.

We asked a bunch of Watford fans to share their memories of being a Watford fan before, during and after the historic penalty shoot out. It fascinating and wonderful to look back on the time and how fans got tickets and followed the game from a far.

A huge thank you to Matt Rowson, Pete Fincham, Frances Lynn, Steve and Nick Catley for their contributions.

SUPER DAN - Watford 1-0 Burnley13 Aug 202200:47:22

Watford continued their decent start to the season with a hard earned win over Vincent Kompany’s Burnley; thanks in large part to another terrific performance from Austrian stopper Dan Bachmann.

Mike, Jon, Jas and DCW convened in the balmy Friday night heat to discuss another absorbing night at the Vic, which saw Captain Tom score on his birthday, fan favourite Kamara see red, Yasser Asprilla make an eye-catching debut and most importantly, Watford claim the three points against a fellow promotion hopeful.

It’s good to be back to winning ways. Come on you ‘Orns.

We Weren’t Beaten Away - WBA 1-1 Watford09 Aug 202200:42:27

Watford remain unbeaten after their first away game in this Championship campaign, but how?! Well, Jon, Mike and his brother Andy gathered at the final whistle to try and work out exactly that.

It was a tough watch but a welcome point; sensational then slack from Sarr, interspersed with some brilliance from Bachmann and defiant defending, all combining to mean the Hornets escaped the Hawthorns with what has to be deemed a lucky point.

As well as the West Brom debrief, Jon spoke to the incredible Ann Swanson at the recent Junior Hornets fun day, and another bona fide legend in the shape of Sir Nigel Gibbs, who was in attendance at the launch of the Vicarage Road centenary exhibition at Watford Museum.

Two legends, a legendary goal and a point on the road. What’s not to love? This is From the Rookery End. Come on you ‘Orns.

FTRE Draft - Pozzo Era Debutants19 Jul 202201:16:15

With a few weeks still to go until the all new Watford season kicks off, we thought it was time for another of our draft podcasts.

Under the watchful eyes of Jon, Mike, Jason, Jordi and DCW compete under draft conditions to competitivly pick the best XI of players who made their debut for the mighty hornets during the first 10 years of the Pozzo Era. So Foster, Deeney, Cathacart and Cleverly are out but the huge eccletic list of players the Pozzo network have hunted down.

There are some great players, who gave fans some memerable moments, and there are also some terrible ones, who you might have blocked from your memory..

Rob Edwards (13.1)09 Jun 202200:36:38

The season may be over, but FTRE isn’t going anywhere!

One of the big stories of recent weeks has been the appointment of new Head Coach Rob Edwards, and we were recently lucky enough to spend some time with him at Vicarage Road. In this very special podcast, you’ll get to hear exactly what he said.

Mike, Jon and Jas chat to the new man about a host of topics including learning from Graham Taylor and Kenny Jackett, what his friends thought when he took the precarious job at WD18, his style of play and hopes and expectations for the new season.

Rob (as you’ll hear him insist we call him!) is open and honest and we think the chat will make for a great listen.

It’s a new era at Vicarage Road; this is your opportunity to hear directly form the man charged with making it a successful one. Welcome to Watford, Rob.

As the end of the season finally (finally!) hives into view, and with the new Head Coach signed, sealed and delivered, attentions are starting to turn to the Watford squad, and which of them will be staying or going.

That’s the focus of this, the latest From the Rookery End podcast, in which The Athletic’s Adam Leventhal is joined by Mike and DCW to discuss what is sure to be a busy summer of ins and outs at Vicarage Road.

The futures of big names such as Ismailia Sarr, Emmanuel Dennis and Imran Louza are all discussed, with your hosts also trying to identify what is needed if the Hornets are to have a successful season back in the Championship.

We got a draw.... We got a draw11 May 202200:30:06

A point at home... How strange! In a match that will not go down in Premier League history, with two poor sides, Watford fans left Vicarage Road with a very strange positive vibe... but we're not really sure why.

After the final whistle, Jon, Mike and Jason met outside the Hornet Shop to discuss the game, the players who were fit and healthy enough to get on the pitch and, of course, they had to discuss the appointment of Watford's new Head Coach - Rob Edwards.

This week Adam is joined by DCW and Mike to discuss what is shaping up to be an interesting shortlist of potential names for the soon to be vacant position of Head Coach at Vicarage Road.

Your hosts discuss the pros and cons of a former Hornets hero taking over the hot seat, while also debating the attributes that any potential boss will need and should possess.

There is also a fairly brutal assessment of Roy Hodgson’s time at WD18, as the team try to work out where his appointment ranks alongside other Pozzo choices.

Broken by Burnley01 May 202200:37:48

With their 2-1 home loss to Burnley, Watford continued to break records for run of home defeats and Jon, Mike, Jas and Tom Wickes (Editor of Golden Pages Fanzine) gathered outside the Hornet Shop to basically console each other.

As well as talking about the good (at times) but ultimately poor performance, they also discuss the future and purpose of fan representation. You'll hear a clip from Oh My Word, a podcast all about supporting Watford in the 90s. Their most recent episode had Pete Fincham on and he discussed the start of and current state of fans involvement with Watford FC.

Plus they really depress themselves when pondering the possibility of Marco Silva, Bourenmouth and Luton swapping places with the Goldens.

Strategy, Connections and finding the Truth19 Mar 202200:58:50

Whilst Watford took an FA Cup enforced weekend off, Jon, Mike and Jason gathered to discuss fans' views on an array of topics. After asking fans to Twitter, "We’ve asked this question before, but it seems like a good time to raise it again. You’re at a Fan’s Forum with Scott/Gino. You have the mic. What question are you asking? The caveat is that you have to be genuinely willing to ask it in a face to face situation."

So we decided to take the best ones and discuss them. We aren't answering the questions, remember we aren't the club, we are just a few fans sharing our ideas and wondering how they would go down.

The hot topics include: not sticking with a manager, finding a connection with the club, what are the clubs targets and should someone else take over the control of the club's football operations.

A win at St Marys - An Junior Hornet away day to remember13 Mar 202200:40:39

They've been very rare this season so a 2-1 win away at Southampton made for an extremely happy day - but it wasn't just because of the match. Jon and Mike went down to St Marys on the Junior Hornets bus with the legend, and still a force of nature well into her 80's, Ann Swanson.

After the midweek loss away at Wolves, the podcast starts with some reflections, but also some external reflections from Jacqui Oatley, who was commentating on the match. And of course they chat about Sunday's win, the Cucho Hernandez goals and a performance that we hope starts the run in for Watford and our Premier League survival.

THIS IS FROM THE ROOKERY END

Better, but beaten06 Mar 202200:50:06

It was a more enjoyable afternoon at Vicarage Road, with a superb Cucho Hernandez finish the undeniable highlight, but it wasn’t enough to avoid an eighth straight home defeat for Watford.

Jon, Jas and Mike gathered outside a cold Vicarage Road to discuss a game that may well have provided entertainment to any neutrals, but delivered another example of how costly mistakes can be for long suffering home fans.

The boys work their way through the team as they run the rule over a performance that was better, but ultimately not enough.

There is time, there is a chance, and while hope is fading fast, From the Rookery End will be with you every step of the way. Come on you ‘Orns.

Roy makes his point at Old Trafford26 Feb 202200:44:32

Jon, Jason and Mike are back with the latest From the Rookery End podcast, discussing an unexpected but most welcome away point (and clean sheet) at Manchester United.

The boys discuss the ending of a run of 10 straight defeats at Old Trafford, and while not exactly doing cartwheels, it’s fair to say they are happier than a few days earlier…

There is praise for a spirited defensive performance and nod to the ever improving Imran Louza, while there are a few questions asked of what is evidently a forward line shorn of any confidence.

The team also discuss Roy’s prickly post Palace patter, talk about hope and also touch on the Watford career of Danny Webber after he chatted Watford with fellow Hornets’ fan Charlie Zazzera.

A point at Old Trafford is never to be sniffed at. Enjoy it and enjoy this, the latest episode of From the Rookery End. Come on you ‘Orns.

Stalemates & Season Awards21 Apr 202401:19:34

Zero goals and still no home win, but there is still plenty to discuss on the latest From the Rookery End.

Mike, Jon and Jas talk through the stalemate with a largely toothless Tigers, run the rule over the Player of the Season contenders (including a controversial suggestion from Mike) as well as looking at the impact and importance of Junior Hornets events like the one held on Saturday. The visit of Aidy Boothroyd to Vicarage Road also gives the boys an excuse to reminisce about one of the most unexpected and enjoyable season la of recent times.

In short, there is plenty to go at. Thanks for listening to From the Rookery End. Come on you ‘Orns.
