Only 3 Years: When Compounding Takes Over20 Sep 202600:14:48

In this week's episode, I break down the relationship between savings rate and timelines to FI, and share a breakthrough that has me flipping conventional FI wisdom on it's head. What I realized is that for my specific situation, there is only a few years difference in my FI timeline if I continue to save at my current rate vs stopping saving completely. And so the reframe I am doing is: instead of having to wait until FI to make any career changes, examining the tradeoff between doing my current job for the next 10-15 years, vs. pivoting to a different one, since the reality is that even if I save nothing in a new role, the FI timeline wasn't as different as I expected. This reframe changed the way I am thinking about the next 10 years of my life. Hopefully this will be useful for those of you in the messy middle as well.

Reflections on Community - 202607 Sep 202600:12:03

In this week's episode, I reflect on how my perspective on community has changed over the course of this year. I have had several realizations about ideal communities this year, inspired by trips I took this summer to visit friends and family. Ever since, I have been thinking more clearly about what kind of community I am looking for, and where I might find it. There are no big decisions in this episode, but hopefully the content is food for thought for your own life and community.

The Money/Time x Happiness Sweet Spot08 Aug 202600:12:05

In this week's episode, I reflect on how some people optimize for money and time to the detriment of their happiness, and how there is a sweet spot for both. I emphasize the importance of designing our best life first and creating it from there rather than letting money or time optimization lead into a life not aligned with our ideals/happiness. I also reflect on a recent mainstream media article about a FIRE person who early retired and is lonely, and I comment about how that media is incentivized to make FIRE look bad or controversial for clicks.

Goal Update & Asians Finding Purpose26 Jul 202600:17:35

In this episode, I cover progress towards my 2026 goals across a range of topics (podcasting, finance coaching/advising, friends & family, cooking, piano, and more). I also do a media segment this week where I highlight different Asian men at different stages in life going through a purpose conversation that I have been following recently on Youtube. Many of them are on the FIRE path (accidentally or purposefully) and they are all figuring our their purpose, career, and/or ikigai.

Relocation Risks & Rewards19 Jul 202600:11:57

In this week's episode, as I have been considering my own potential relocation, I have been thinking a lot about my mom's big relocation (from South Korea to the US). She made this decision in her early 20's and made some serious sacrifices to make it happen (she took her family with her and became the main provider). Relocation has both risks & rewards, and in this episode I reflect on what I suspect were a few for hers. And I close admiring her for making such a leap of faith with benefits that compounded long after she was gone.

Episode 50: Reflections on Past, Present & Future12 Jul 202600:19:49

For my 50th episode (roughly speaking), I am reflecting on the podcast's origins, where I am at in the present with the podcast, and how the message of the podcast is being incorporated into my own life. I also touch base on my hopes for the future of the podcast. Finally, I throw in some lessons learned about podcasting AV setup and editing software for others to learn from if they are looking to start their own podcast! I hope you enjoy this reflection and update.

Reruns: Explaining FIRE to a Newbie (My 1st Episode!)06 Jul 202600:15:12

In the lead-up to my 50th podcast episode (I can't believe we're here!) I am re-broadcasting my very first episode, which discusses my backstory and explains FIRE or FI (Financial Independence) to a newbie in an approachable way. Sometime in the next few weeks, I will be reflecting on the podcast's origins, how things have grown and improved, and where I am headed in the future. Pardon the slight audio issues in this episode - it turns out that one of the things I have improved on over time is my audio quality. Hope you enjoy this reflection with me on my past work!

Why Stock Picking Profits Are Misleading & Why Index Funds Win29 Jun 202600:14:00

In this week's episode, I discuss the math of day trading or individual stock picking over buying and holding index funds, and why those stock pick wins in the short term are surprisingly misleading & don't tell the full story (much like rent vs. buy, where similar issues can occur). At the end of the day, you have to do the math for yourself and compare net gains to the alternatives, and often, in the case of index funds vs. individual stock picking, index funds win in the long run.

This week's episode is part 1 of a new Paychecks to Purpose series with Meghan of the EverydayFI podcast. In this series (initially kicked off with Aubrey Williams last year), I have 2-way conversations with people on the FIRE journey. We discuss going from paychecks to purpose in our careers, as well as how we define and live a good life. In this episode, we discuss our respective childhoods and how our career journeys have evolved, partially using the Job Phases framework (I defined this a while back to help think through different types of jobs you can have in your career). Tune in next week for part 2, where we'll round out the career section and talk about how we live a good life.

How Mainstream Media Misunderstands FIRE17 May 202600:27:52

In this week’s episode, I discuss how mainstream media misunderstands FIRE. I debunk a lot of the common mainstream critiques of the movement and talk about how I interpret it. I also briefly review of my new e-reader and I tease media of the week (two media that misinterpret the FIRE movement and an episode of This American Life where you learn about the host’s relationship with his parents through the years).

In this week's episode, for my main segment I cover all sorts of ways I "hack my brain" (or get myself to do things that are good for me) with technology (i.e. reminders, widgets, streaks, etc.) and I also cover some key psychological tactics that I have used to hack my brain as well (i.e. gamification, boundaries, task pairing, etc.). For my Did You Know? segment, which is a small hack or explainer, I highlighted a new device that is helping me drive safer and generally experience less friction with my CarPlay in my car. For my media of the week, I highlighted the If Books Could Kill podcast's episode on Grit, as well as a video on someone regretting buying a rental property, and why.

Deep Pursuits: A Way to Find Purpose in Life22 Feb 202600:17:49

In this episode, I discuss a term I coined called "Deep Pursuits". In short, Deep Pursuits are special kinds of of hobbies, activities, or callings that allow us to do one or more of the following:

1. Find purpose

2. Find or foster community (and give back!)

3. Find the flow state

4. Build skills and use creativity

(Bonus points if you can do multiple!)

I go in-depth to describe examples of Deep Pursuits in my life, describe why having Deep Pursuits and finding the flow state is so important, and I also throw out a bunch of examples of brainstormed Deep Pursuits ideas to get you thinking about how to add Deep Pursuits to your own life.

Food, Diet, & More05 Jan 202600:45:35
