Angeli Rose Gomez, the subject of the powerful documentary, UVALDE MOM, along with Director Anayansi Prado, sat down for a heartfelt interview about the film and persevering in the face of unimaginable tragedy, as well as the failures of political and legal systems in protecting their own citizens.

UVALDE MOM is a documentary that tells the story of Angeli Rose Gomez, a farm worker and single mom who in May 2022 ran into Robb Elementary in Uvalde, TX to save her two sons during a mass shooting, while nearly 400 armed officers waited 77 minutes to intervene. When a video of her running out with her sons goes viral, Angeli highlights the inaction of law enforcement that day. However, she soon faces harassment from authorities, making her vulnerable due to her tumultuous past. As Angeli's narrative unfolds, the Uvalde community demands accountability and change. Conflicting narratives emerge from authorities, and the U.S. Department of Justice launches an investigation.

We had a blast with the stars and filmmakers behind three of Dances with Films 2023's most exciting indies. Tune in special coverage of one of our favorite film festivals.

Heightened Writer, director, and actor Sara Friedman stole our hearts with her film Heightened, which also stars real-life couple Xander Berkley and Sarah Clarke of 24 fame. This film is cognitive behavioral therapy for the soul and we loved every minute. We talked with Sara about themes that mean a lot to us - anxiety, therapy, and finding love. 

Bibi  Elizabeth Paige's soul-stirring performance in Chrisopher Beatty's haunted mansion thriller, Bibi, scared the pants off of us and evoked those spine chills reserved the for likes of the Shining. Dig into this conversation that covers everything from scary carpet to Mike Tyson.

This time, Becky and Shai are on the ground in Tucson with special coverage of I Dream in Widescreen 2023, the 18th annual showcase of senior thesis films made by UArizona’s brilliant next generation filmmakers. Filmmaker Alexis Jacknow joins the pod to discuss her feature film Clock, which premiers on Hulu April 28th. Clock, written and directed by Alexis, is a body-horror thriller about a woman who joins a clinical trial in order to fix her “broken” biological clock. We discuss the film’s multi-layered symbolism, Jewish themes, and filming with a live tarantula. And just when you'd least expect it, we jam about Eurovision's Oscar snub.

Filmmaker Noam Argov joins Shai and Lily to discuss her short film Sulam, which premieres this week at both the Aspen Film’s Short Fest and the Florida Film Festival. A beautiful film about a first generation Israeli-American teenager, Sulam explores cultural clashes between mother and daughter. We also talk about Argov’s short Let Me Assist You, which is a fantastic sci-fi rom-com you can watch on YouTube.

Ki Griffin and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs, Only the Good Survive), stars of the “Traumedy” Bloody Hell, join Friday Night Movie to discuss their roles in this beautiful and impactful film. Bloody Hell is a unique coming of age story follows 16-year-old Lindy (Maddie Ziegler) who is unexpectedly diagnosed with a reproductive condition, MRKH syndrome. The diagnosis upends her plans to have sex, her presumptions about womanhood and sexuality, her relationship with her mother (Emily Hampshire), and most importantly, herself.

Holly Montgomery (Holly Montgomery, the Boneshakers, Mustangs of the West) and Jenny Langer (the Boneshakers) are taking the SXSW music festival by storm with their soulful vocals and contagious grooves. They sat down with Friday Night Movie to talk about their musical journeys, music in movies, and answer the question: if your band was a movie, which one would it be? Holly is playing in three showcases at the Saxon Pub including two on March 14 (solo band, Boneshakers) and one on March 16 (Mustangs of the West). Jenny is the lead singer of the Boneshakers who are playing a showcase at the Saxon Pub on March 14.

He stopped by Friday Night Movie to talk about his pilot, A Guide to Not Dying Completely Alone, a funny and emotional series about mortality, forgiveness, and starting over, all from a gay Asian perspective. Visionary director Ally Pankiw (Schitt's Creek, Shrill, the Great) joined Friday Night Movie to talk about her powerful, insightful, and darkly funny film, I Used to Be Funny, starring Rachel Sennott, premiering at SXSW on March 13. We also jammed on our mutual favorite band - Muna - and Ally's work with them on three epic music videos (Silk Chiffon, Anything But Me, What I Want). And we made sure to talk about the greatness of Caleb Hearon (I Used to Be Funnny, Silk Chiffon), an outsanding actor and comic, as well as one of the fixtures of the "Ally Pankiw-universe" (which is our pod's nickname for her amazing body of work).
