| Martin Belmont talks Ducks Deluxe, The Rumour, Pub Rock and The Guest List | 04 Mar 2026 | 00:45:58 | |
Martin Belmont was about 11 or 12 years old, a kid growing up in England, when he asked his parents to buy him a guitar. The first record he got was “Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis Presley. Around that time, The Shadows, out of London, were a popular instrumental group. America had The Ventures, England had The Shadows. Young Martin was fascinated by the look and sound of Hank Marvin’s Fender Stratocaster. In art school, Martin made friends with other guitarists and musicians and after leaving school, he moved to London. Through a mutual friend, he met the members of two bands, Help Yourself and Brinsley Schwarz. The Brinsleys were in need of a roadie. Martin played that role for about a year before forming his own band, Ducks Deluxe. They signed with RCA, the label Martin’s childhood hero Elvis had been on. The next band he co-formed along with guitarist Brinsley Schwarz and keyboardist Bob Andrews was The Rumour, best known for backing Graham Parker with Andrew Bodnar on bass and Steve Goulding on drums. The rest, as they say, is history. Photo courtesy of Martin Belmont. Save on Certified Pre-Owned ElectronicsPlug has great prices on refurbished electronics. | Straight From the Hat – The Return of Ben Vaughn | 18 Feb 2026 | 00:30:39
Back in 2022, I talked with Ben Vaughn, whose music and radio show I’ve been a fan of for years. Ben has enjoyed a great career as a performer, songwriter, composer for film and TV, and record producer. He’s produced records by Ween, Arthur Alexander, and Charlie Feathers, and also collaborated with Alan Vega, Alex Chilton and Los Straitjackets. His songs have also been recorded by artists including Marshall Crenshaw, The Morells, and Deer Tick. Needless to say, Ben Vaughn has encountered some colorful characters in his musical journey. His friend Laura Pochodylo, who works for Sun Records in Nashville, wrote the names of those colorful characters down and placed them in a hat. Names like Jonathan Richman, Arthur Alexander, Willie Nelson, Nancy Sinatra and more. So, what do they do with those names? Laura selects a few at random and Ben relives the stories—no pre-planning, no filter —just telling it like it was, straight from the hat. The new podcast is called, of course, Straight from the Hat and on today’s episode of Frets, I happily welcome…the return of Ben Vaughn. This is my second interview with Ben Vaughn. Check out my 2022 interview here. Songs featured in this episode: “Quote Unquote” by Ben Vaughn Listen to Straight From the Hat here. Find music by Ben Vaughn here. Jefferson Hart and his stepdaughters Lila and Ella are Secret Monkey Weekend, a family band who were the subject of an Emmy Award-winning PBS documentary. Jeff plays guitar, Lila plays drums, Ella plays bass and all three provide wonderful vocals and harmony. The documentary tells the story of how the band came to be, through loss and heartbreak – but also of a family coming together and bonding over their love of music and their love for each other. Listen as Jefferson Hart talks about music, love, family and Secret Monkey Weekend. Photo by Bill Reaves. | Tense Music Plays – Murray Attaway Returns | 07 May 2025 | 00:46:19
I was a big fan of Guadalcanal Diary, so when Murray Attaway appeared on Frets back in 2022, I could hardly believe I was talking with their lead singer and main songwriter. The band released four major label albums throughout the 1980s and Murray went on to record In Thrall, a solo album that features Jackson Browne, Nicky Hopkins, Jim Keltner, Aimee Mann, Steve Nieve, Sid Page and Benmont Tench among others. Murray has also composed music for independent film scores and his songs have been featured in many films and television shows. This week sees the release of Murray’s new solo album, Tense Music Plays, and returns this week on Frets to tell us all about the new record. Hope you’ll enjoy my interview with Murray Attaway. | Peter Holsapple Returns – The Face of 68 and The Paranoid Style | 16 Apr 2025 | 00:58:52
In June of 2024, I talked with Peter Holsapple about the reissues of two classic albums by the dB’s – “Stands for Decibels” and “Repercussion”. I had the pleasure of talking to Peter again recently, this time about his soon to be released solo album, The Face of 68. The song you’re hearing, “Larger than Life” , is the first single from that album. It was great to catch up with Peter to hear about his very busy 2024, the recording of the album, touring, his continued work as a member of The Paranoid Style, and some candid, honest talk reflecting on his lifestyle in the past and his outlook on life and love these days. Hope you’ll enjoy my second interview with the one and only Peter Holsapple. Photo by Bill Reeves. My first talk with Peter from June 2024 is also available here. | Paul Rappaport – Airships, Airplay & the Art of Rock Promotion | 09 Apr 2025 | 00:58:55
Paul Rappaport is an accomplished guitarist who first heard guitar when he was a kid in California, watching a live local TV show featuring country guitar players…a show that was broadcast from a huge L.A. car lot. He learned to play, fell in love with the instrument and by high school was playing in bands. While attending college at UCLA, Paul got a job offer. A very appealing offer from Columbia Records. The position sounded good, but what really sweetened the deal was when he learned he could have all the records he wanted…for free. During his 33 years at Columbia, Paul Rappaport proved to be gifted at promotion and marketing and at forming close relationships with artist and bands, who knew him as Rapp. He gave Elvis Costello the red Rickenbacker used on Armed Forces. Pink Floyd asked Rapp to join them onstage at the London Arena. And he created some of the most memorable and visually stunning event promotions in rock history. All of this is told in Rapp’s fascinating new book – Gliders Over Hollywood: Airships, Airplay, and The Art Of Rock Promotion. | Syd Straw – Singer, Songwriter, Guitarist and a Wonderful Person | 13 Aug 2024 | 00:50:53
It was a wonderful experience talking with someone I've admired for so long. I love her songs, I love her voice. And she’s just incredibly cool. In additional to her solo work, there’s such a long list of great bands and artists she’s performed with. A list that includes – Pat Benatar, The dB’s, The Del-Lords, Dave Alvin, The Golden Palominos, Marshall Crenshaw, Van Dyke Parks, Vic Chesnutt, Wilco, Richard Thompson and many more. Syd’s debut solo album Surprise featured a lot of her pals from that list and her second album, War and Peace was backed by none other than that fantastic and much-loved band from Springfield, The Skeletons. I hope you’ll enjoy listening to this episode as much as I enjoyed talking with the one and only…Syd Straw. Find great deals on guitars, amps, audio and recording gear. Or sell yours! | Beth Bombara – a Wonderful Songwriter, Guitarist and Musician | 20 Jun 2024 | 00:38:24
While growing up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a young Beth Bombara took piano lessons in grade school. By the time she was entering high school, she had become interested in another instrument: her Mom’s electric guitar. She formed a punk band, Green Means Go, wrote some songs with her bandmates, and before long was playing for local audiences and gaining a loyal following. After attending college in both Michigan and Illinois, Beth moved to St. Louis, where she lives today. And, that following she had in high school…has now grown into a very large fan base. She stopped by the Frets studio today and I really hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed talking with this very talented singer-songwriter and guitarist. “Wasted Wonderland” serves as the title of a great compilation of songs by Bob Collum. A singer-songwriter and guitarist, Bob grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, then spent a couple years in Chicago before making a big change. In 2001, he moved to the UK. The list of artists Bob has supported include Dave Alvin, Ron Sexsmith, The Handsome Family, John Wesley Harding, Robbie Fulks, Marshall Crenshaw, Alejandro Escovedo, Amy Rigby, Robert Earle Keen, and Wilko Johnson. He continues to write, record and perform with his current group, simply referred to as…The Bob Collum Band. | From Kippington Lodge to The Rumour - an Interview with Brinsley Schwarz | 15 May 2024 | 00:53:15
Brinsley Schwarz met Nick Lowe at school in the 1960s. They played in various bands with different group names and different members. In 1969, the band took the name of their lead guitarist, Brinsley Schwarz. On their studio albums, all from the 1970s, the band was made up of Brinsley along with Bob Andrews, Nick Lowe and Billy Rankin, with the addition of Ian Gomm on guitar and vocals, starting with their third LP, Silver Pistol. After releasing their final studio album The New Favourites of Brinsley Schwarz, Brinsley and Bob would become part of Graham Parker & The Rumour. Brinsley is not only a fine guitar player and vocalist, he also plays saxophone, keyboards and percussion, and…is also a luthier, working on guitars and amplifiers. These days he’s still writing and recording wonderful songs. It was a pleasure…and an honor, to talk with a guitar hero since I was in my teens. Hope you’ll enjoy my interview with Brinsley Schwarz. | Tom Hartman – The Aerovons, Amazing Journey from St. Louis to Abbey Road | 15 Apr 2024 | 01:02:28
In 1968, St. Louis band The Aerovons were getting noticed in clubs around town. Still in high school, their leader and singer, Tom Hartman, was composing their songs. The band was being managed by Tom’s mother, Maurine. She was determined to see her son and his bandmates make it big. Tom was 16 years old when he, his band and his manager mom made their first pilgrimage to England with demos in search of a record deal. They signed with Parlophone, but were asked to head back to St. Louis and write more material. A year later, the boys entered EMI Studio Two to record their debut album unaware that next door, in Studio One, their heroes The Beatles were recording their classic album, Abbey Road. Parlophone released some singles by The Aerovons, but problems among band members resulted in them falling apart. For several decades, their album Resurrection stayed in a vault before RPM in England released it on CD. Now, this legendary album has been remastered and reissued on vinyl. Stay tuned to hear the story of The Aerovons, as told by its founder and leader, Tom Hartman. Find great deals on guitars, amps, audio and recording gear. Or sell yours! | Richard Lloyd – Everything is Combustible: from Television to Today | 16 Nov 2023 | 00:32:10
A founding member of the profoundly influential band Television, Richard Lloyd has led a fascinating life. He covers a lot of that life in his book Everything Is Combustible: Television, CBGB’s and Five Decades of Rock and Roll: The Memoirs of an Alchemical Guitarist. In addition to his time with Television, he played on albums by Matthew Sweet and John Doe and has produced many albums. It was great, and a great honor to talk with Richard Lloyd. | Tyler Armstrong – The Band Feel and a Man of Many Guitars | 18 Aug 2023 | 00:49:09
Tyler Armstrong grew up in Springfield, Illinois and as a young kid, started banging on pots and pans, developing a love for percussion. Through his parents, he was exposed to both Contemporary Christian music and also secular music. Through his older sister, he also heard a great mix of pop and punk. Tyler appreciated good music, no matter what the genre. His dad was into classic rock, which opened another musical window. He got a guitar, and over time, became an incredibly great guitarist. At 18, he moved to Nashville for a while and was knocked out by what he heard from the musicians there. He’s played in bands that have opened for Cheap Trick, Molly Hatchet and .38 Special just to name a few. Tyler does session work, produces other artists his space Harbor Studios, and is currently playing and recording with FEEL on lead guitar. On my recent visit to Harbor, I got to hear Tyler Armstrong’s story in his own words and see at least some of his many guitars, amps and gear. Hope you’ll enjoy my interview with Tyler Armstrong of The Band FEEL. Find great deals on guitars, amps, audio and recording gear. Or sell yours! | Mary Huff and Rick Miller – Southern Culture on the Skids | 19 Jun 2023 | 00:47:19
In the early 1980s, Rick Miller formed the first lineup of Southern Culture on the Skids. Rick had grown up dividing time between his father’s home in North Carolina and his mother’s home in California. Mary Huff, from Roanoke, Virginia was a cello major who also played bass guitar. Upon hearing that Rick’s band was looking for a replacement bass player, Mary joined and also recruited her long time friend Dave Hartman on drums. The trio of Rick, Mary and Dave would go on to become a much-loved, very fun and extremely talented band who have recorded and toured for several decades now. I’ve seen them play shows over the years, most recently at The Duck Room in St. Louis. And I had the pleasure of talking with Mary and Rick who called in from their rehearsal space and studio, The Kudzu Ranch. Hope you enjoy my very fun interview with Mary Huff and Rick Miller. If you’ve either listened to, or experienced live performances by Midwest area bands including Stillwater, Waterloo, Magnolia Summer, Rough Shop and Cave States, you’ve heard music by Chris Grabau. Chris has composed songs and provided guitar work and vocals for all of those groups and his band Cave States is now in its tenth year of recording and performing. There’s also a long list of bands that he’s shared the stage with and also lent his musical talents to in the studio. He’s appeared with bands at several well known Midwest music festivals and also in Austin at South by Southwest. Chris has performed over the years with the likes of Chuck Prophet, Alejandro Escovedo, Robyn Hitchcock, Buddy Guy, Matthew Sweet, Jeff Tweedy…and even St. Louis legend Chuck Berry. That’s just a fraction of the artists and bands that have recognized the talents of the prolific Chris Grabau. Chris took time out of a very busy schedule to talk with me in the Frets studio. Before her family moved from the Philippines to California, a teenage June Millington heard a girl playing guitar at school. Soon after, June and her sister Jean were playing acoustic guitars and ukuleles at variety shows. Before long, they were playing in bands, now with electric guitars. After several personnel changes and band names, The Svelts and Wild Honey, they landed a recording contract. | John McFee – From Clover to The Doobie Brothers and Jackdawg | 17 Nov 2025 | 00:36:05
John McFee formed San Francisco-based band Clover in the ’60s. Their first, self-titled album on Fantasy came out in 1970. Several years later, they came to realize some key people in the UK pub rock scene were big fans of their music. Nick Lowe, Brinsley Schwarz and also drummer Pete Thomas, who called Clover to see if they would audition for the up and coming Declan MacManus, who would soon change his name to Elvis Costello. Clover got the gig, backing Elvis on My Aim is True and John McFee’s great guitar work is what you hear on all the classic tracks like “Alison” and “The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes”. John also played steel guitar on Van Morrison’s Tupelo Honey and St. Dominic’s Preview. The long list of artists he’s contributed guitar, pedal steel and vocals for includes Carlene Carter, Nick Lowe, Emmylou Harris, The Grateful Dead, and Boz Scaggs. In ’79, John McFee was asked to join The Doobie Brothers, replacing Jeff Baxter. He also formed Southern Pacific with Keith Knudsen of the Doobies and Stu Cook of Creedence. In the ’90s that trio became Jackdawg. The release of their fantastic self-titled album was delayed due to the death of their manager. A CD release was temporarily available in 2009, but the album was out-of-print for years. That is, until now. Tune in to my interview with singer, songwriter, guitarist, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist, John McFee. | Adam Reichmann – from Sourpatch to Nadine to One Adam One | 26 Jan 2023 | 00:59:22
After moving from the Chicago suburbs to St. Louis in the late ’80s, Adam Reichmann met Todd Schnitzer at Washington University. Both were wanting to form a band. They did just that, and the two became an early version of what would become Nadine, a group that would not only get a lot of attention in the Midwest, but in Europe as well. Nadine received critical acclaim from major music publications after releasing some very fine records. Adam Reichmann continues to write and record solo. His new album, Where Do I Begin under the name One Adam One, was produced by none other than his long-time bandmate, Todd Schnitzer. I caught up with Adam for a great talk about bands, songwriting and of course…guitars. | Sarah Borges – The Broken Singles and a Rockin’ Solo Career | 12 Jan 2023 | 00:32:42
Over the last couple decades, Sarah Borges has built a loyal following, playing live shows and releasing several albums. Her first record, Silver City, was praised by NPR’s David Dye for showcasing “an unusual knack for mixing alternative rock with country” She stays very busy writing, recording and touring – but in early 2020, Sarah, like many musicians, became isolated from concert halls and even recording studios. Missing that audience connection and camaraderie of working with other artists, she continued to write and record from home, singing vocals into her iPhone utilizing her clothes closet as a vocal isolation booth. Stay tuned to hear more about how that experience took shape in the form of her latest album, Together Alone. The track you’re hearing, “Wouldn’t Know You” is from that album. | Addicted to Noise – Michael Goldberg Returns | 29 Nov 2022 | 00:55:13
In the early days of the World Wide Web, former Rolling Stone senior writer and associate editor Michael Goldberg published an online music magazine. Addicted to Noise, or ATN was the first online magazine to include audio samples with new album reviews. The list of bands and artists interviewed include Neil Young, R.E.M., Patti Smith, Sonic Youth, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, Tom Waits, Lou Reed, Paul Westerberg and Prince. Michael conducted many of the interviews but also enlisted music critics like Dave Marsh, Greil Marcus, Deborah Frost and NPR’s rock-and-roll historian Ed Ward, one of the founders of South by Southwest. Some guest columns and reviews were written by musicians themselves. Among the contributors were Joey Ramone, Lenny Kaye, David Was and Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker. Michael’s best interviews, essays and profiles not only from Addicted to Noise, but also from Esquire, Rolling Stone, DownBeat, Creem, New Musical Express and The San Francisco Chronicle are collected and available in his new book. | Molly Healey – Lacewings, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, her String Project and Looping | 21 Oct 2022 | 00:32:41
When playing solo, or when playing with her full band, multi-instrumentalist Molly Healey is a looping extraordinaire. She creates a piece of music, loops that piece, then skillfully plays accompaniment, on instruments including cello, violin and guitar. That sound, combined with her classically-trained voice, produces atmospheric music – often with full string arrangements performed entirely by Molly, multi-tracking in the studio. She’s opened for and played with many bands – and in addition to her solo work, continues to play violin for The Ozark Mountain Daredevils. Plug has great prices on refurbished electronics. He’s currently based in St. Louis and continues to perform and record both solo and with his Americana spirituals project, The Unlawful Assembly. I’ve never met anyone quite like Walter. While living in Columbia, Missouri, Deke Dickerson formed the much loved garage rock band, The Untamed Youth. He was 17. In the early ’90s, at the age of 22, Deke moved to L.A. and has enjoyed great success as an excellent guitarist. He once had a regular column in Guitar Player, has written several books on guitar, he’s even scored and contributed songs to film soundtracks. Two of Deke’s songs are featured in the newest Disneyland ride, Cars Land, at Disney’s California Adventure theme park. In 2019 he won the Ameripolitan Music Award for Musician of the Year. And, the Hallmark Guitar Company of Maryland manufactured a Deke Dickerson signature guitar. Those of us who follow Deke know that he stays very busy touring – not just in the states, but also in Canada and Europe. He’s always on the go, but I managed to track down the one, the only, Deke Dickerson. | Steve Scariano on Bass Guitar – A Rock and Roll Life | 17 Jun 2022 | 00:48:46
Steve Scariano was in high school when magazines like Circus, Creem, Phonograph and Rolling Stone were not only publishing articles on guitar gods and rock ’n roll frontmen, but offering record reviews of bands one might not hear on most FM stations of that era. Steve loved reading about and discovering new music, and before long, he was playing bass for bands in and around St. Louis and Champaign. Record albums are still very much a part of his life. He’s surrounded by thousands of them in his office, tucked away in the lower level of Euclid Records. And those who know his story, know that Steve Scariano…has led a rock ’n roll life. | Larry McCray – Blues Guitarist, Singer-Songwriter “The World Needs to Know Who He Is” | 03 Jun 2022 | 00:29:58
Larry McCray spent his early years on an Arkansas farm, the second youngest of nine siblings. His older sister Clara introduced Larry to the guitar and to the music of the three Kings of the blues—B.B., Freddie and Albert. Virgin Records subsidiary label, Point Blank signed Larry as its first artist. And over the past three decades of nonstop touring and recording, Larry has shared the stage with B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Albert King, Johnny Winter, Keb Mo, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. His new album, Blues Without You, was produced by Joe Bonamassa. According to Joe, “Larry has a lot to say, and the world needs to know who he is.” Hope you’ll enjoy my interview with the great blues man Larry McCray. | Wicked Game: Author Michael Goldberg on James Calvin Wilsey | 20 May 2022 | 00:47:09
Michael Goldberg’s new book: “Wicked Game: The True Story of Guitarist James Calvin Wilsey” goes deep into the life of a brilliant but doomed unsung genius who we lost too soon. Jimmy wasn’t just a great and unique guitarist, but a music pioneer. Michael met Jimmy Wilsey in 1982 at a Silvertone gig and a few years later interviewed him in 1987. Not long after that, they became friends. His book tells the story of a charming, incredibly talented guy who ultimately succumbed to the dark side of addiction. It’s riveting, funny at times, heartbreaking and tragic, but fascinating – and hard to put down. Find great deals on guitars, amps, audio and recording gear. Or sell yours! | D. Clinton Thompson of The Symptoms, The Morells, The Skeletons and Ozark Mountain Daredevils – Part 1 | 14 Jan 2022 | 00:53:13
A guitar player’s guitar player. A “riff archivist”. D. Clinton Thompson has been a guitar hero of mine since the first time I saw him play onstage. His mastery of guitar, combined with an obvious great sense of humor, complements his unique vocal style. I really think you’ll enjoy this fascinating, often hilarious discussion with Donnie about his early days, crossing paths with Lou Whitney, and the many bands and artists that he’s contributed his incredible talents to. | Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, Love and Rockets and Ashes and Diamonds - an Interview with Daniel Ash | 29 Oct 2025 | 00:28:13
Daniel Ash, along with Peter Murphy and brothers Kevin and David Haskins, formed Bauhaus, a band who were pioneers of goth rock. Their debut single, “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” is considered by many to be the first record of the gothic-rock genre. They released five studio albums, and during that period, Daniel and Kevin formed the post-punk band Tones on Tail in the early 1980s. In 1985, David Haskins, now as David J, rejoined his Bauhaus bandmates, minus Peter Murphy, and they became Love and Rockets. Where Bauhaus was known for its gothic sound, Love and Rockets’ had a brighter, more pop feel. They enjoyed a succesful run in the ’80s and ’90s, touring internation-ally and were featured prominently in the glory days of MTV. And now, Daniel Ash, along with drummer Bruce Smith of Public Image Ltd. and bassist Paul Spencer Denman who backed Sade, is back. The band is Ashes and Diamonds. The atmospheric sound of their debut album, Ashes and Diamonds are Forever, is fantastic. It releases October 31st and according to my talk with Daniel, the Halloween release is “appropriate”. He was such a pleasure to talk with and I think you’ll enjoy…my interview with Daniel Ash. Photo by Regan Catam @raygun1111 Ashes and Diamonds Are Forever is available through Cleopatra Records.
