Maria (Vocalist of Future Palace) – Berlin Post-Hardcore Trio, New Album ‘Run’ via Arising Empire

On this episode of Fresh is the Word, we have Maria from the Berlin Post-Hardcore trio Future Palace who was on a recent Fresh is the Word Twitch stream. Future Palace just released their new album Run via Arising Empire. During our conversation, Maria shared the topics explored on Run, as well as the design of their album cover and music videos, along with her childhood music influences that shaped her as an artist. It was really fun to chat with Maria and Run is a great addition to where music rooted in Hardcore can go with depth and melody. It’s definitely an album you should check out.

The guest for this episode is Los Angeles-based model and actress JoAnna de Castro, star of the comedic horror-thriller Blood Pageant, now available on DVD and on demand on all streaming platforms. This is de Castro’s first leading role in a film as she plays “Crystal”, a contestant on the American Dream Pageant where her religious beliefs are tested during what happens to become a battle for her life and everyone else involved in the show.

Blood Pageant stars the likes of Stephen Baldwin, David Chokachi, Ted Lange, Beverley Mitchell, Ellia English as Madame Destiny, and introducing Juliana DeStefano and JoAnna de Castro as the film’s main characters, along with Snoop Dogg, Matthew Marsden, and Danielle C. Ryan playing themselves as the pageant’s celebrity judges.

During our chat, de Castro shared her upbringing and how she got the acting bug, the process of auditioning and landing the role of “Crystal” in Blood Pageant, some of her favorites parts of the movie, and how the idea of “faith” is defined and tested throughout this movie, along with much more. JoAnna de Castro was a blast to have on the podcast and I hope for nothing but the best for her in future endeavors.

The guests for this episode are comic book artist/illustrator Lisa Sterle and writer Matthew Erman. This husband and wife duo are co-creators of the series Long Lost, which has been optioned by writer Jenny Klein for development into a TV show. Sterle also is the co-creator of the comic series Submerged with writer Vita Ayala along with developing The Modern Witch Tarot Deck, a modern interpretation of the classic Rider-Waite tarot deck. Sterle's beautiful illustrations have been used for companies like Vault Comics, IDW, BOOM! Studios, and many others.

Currently, Erman is working on an original graphic novel coming out in 2020 called Bonding with artist Emily Pearson, coming out through Vault Comics’ YA Imprint, Myriad. Also coming later this year via IDW is the Care Bears: Unlock the Magic series written by Erman along with writer Nadia Shammas with art by Agnes Garbowska.

During our chat, we talked about the creation of Long Lost and the opportunities it created for them both, their goals on projects, Submerged, their upcoming projects, how they both deal with being a married couple that are both comic creators, the facets of collaboration, and much more.

The guests for this episode are Alethea Van Holland and Jaxon Joubert, creators of the comic series Bad Luck, published by Inbeon Studios.

Bad Luck is a dark comedy/supernatural series set in an alternate 1950's America, witches, demons, and magic are real. Oliver, a bitter incubus is accidentally summoned by Ava, a very forgetful witch, as her familiar. Together, they must explore the far reaches of the world to obtain rare components to complete the ritual that would break their bond, setting Oliver free. However, their adventure doesn't come without a price. A group known as Harvesters are hunting witches like Ava down, and their leader seems to have taken an interest in the pair. Oliver and Ava must learn to work together while avoiding the Harvesters at all costs to see their journey through to the end.

During our chat, we talk about the Bad Luck comic series and we dissect the inspirations behind the characters, how they both became comic creators, how they work together, their styles, Sailor Moon, and so much more.

This episode features the spotlight panel that your Fresh is the Word host Kelly "K-Fresh" Frazier moderated at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival 2019 (TCAF 2019) with Vivek Shraya and Ness Lee about their book Death Threat, released via Arsenal Pulp Press. Vivek Shraya is an artist living in Calgary, Alberta whose body of work crosses the boundaries of music, literature, visual art, theatre, and film and Ness Lee is an illustrator/artist based in Toronto and her work explores the sensitivity of emotional expression using wide range of mediums and surfaces such as ceramics, drawing, painting, mixed media sculpture and murals.

During the panel, we talked about why they did the book based on the transphobic hate mail that Vivek began receiving in 2017 and what they hope people get out of it, why they did the book in that particular style, horror and humor, using comics to tell this story, how the book fits in with Vivek’s work in other media, social responsibility when you are part of a marginalized group, the roles of allies, getting “trapped” in your brand/identity and the struggle to break out of it.
