Send us a text

In this week’s episode of Freelancer Training, I sat down with Barb Davids, SEO strategist and founder of Compass Digital Strategies, to demystify one of the most misunderstood topics in online marketing: Search Engine Optimization.

Spoiler alert: SEO isn’t rocket science.

Barb breaks it down in simple, practical terms—and shows how SEO closely aligns with content marketing and organic lead generation.

💡 Key Insights from the Episode:

🌱 SEO & Organic Lead Gen

✅ Don’t expect traffic just by publishing a website.
✅ Use a blog strategy and embed lead magnets into posts.
✅ Exchange value (like a free download) to grow your email list.

🔍 Free & Paid Keyword Research Tools

  • Google Ads Keyword Planner – Free tool, helpful for brainstorming, but limited insights
  • Keywords Everywhere – Chrome extension with paid credits, shows competition level and top-performing keywords per page
🧠 Pro tip: Know who you’re targeting and what exact phrases they’re using—then build blog content around those search terms.

🧭 Google Indexing & Site Structure

Use site:yourdomain.com to see what pages Google has indexed and how your meta titles, headers (H1-H6), and descriptions appear in search.

📌 For example, try: site:entrepreneurialtranslator.com
(My own site now has more than 200 indexed pages)

✍️ Quick Blog SEO Tips

  • Aim for 800–1200 word blog posts
  • Add target keywords to image alt text
  • Use the Yoast SEO plugin (I do!)
  • Stay consistent—SEO is a long game

Ep 68. Gareth Everson Reveals How a Summery Glass of Iced Lemonade Can Spark Your Marketing Efforts23 Jul 202400:49:29

Send us a text

This week on the podcast I caught up with systems marketing expert Gareth Everson.

Gareth helps solopreneurs small business owners to fix their lead and sales funnels using CRM and sales and marketing automations. Whether you're adding systems to your business for the first time, or are getting poor results by doing it yourself or hiring the wrong person to do it the first time around, Gareth is great at working with you to address the challenges that you face.

Here are a few notable nuggets from our wide-ranging conversation:

Systems marketing is management of sales and marketing processes more effectively and in a more automated way.

Only 3% of website visitors who discover you are ready to buy from you immediately. A lot of your leads fall through the cracks.

The corporate lifestyle is not for all of us and can lead to loss of family connection. Gareth is now a corporate refugee focused heavily on business technology.

Glossary of terms used in this episode

Education marketing – a 90-120 day automated marketing process that sends email out giving prospects insights into how to solve their problems

Chat widget– consider using an all in one CRM e.g. Go High Level (not an affiliate link). Prices from $97 p.m.

Recurring revenue is synonymous with leveraged income (some work upfront then revenue comes in automatically).

If you’re not hitting your intentional goals set PIVOT to find your ideal clients and do the type of work you want to. This was commonplace in the pandemic.

Product-market fit. Think about how you can tweak this to tailor your offer to your target audience.

He recently made a strategic career move from his sales role at Wordfast (the go-to CAT tool for Mac users) to Wordbee, a powerful cloud-based TMS and CAT tool all in one.

💡 Here are some standout takeaways from our conversation:

✅ Career Growth Through Change

John believes that every 10 years or so, it's healthy to switch roles. “In your comfort zone, you consume value. Outside your comfort zone, you create it.”

✅ Understanding AI in Translation

We discussed how Large Language Models (LLMs) operate—particularly the “temperature” parameter, which controls how predictable the output is word by word. As John puts it, “LLMs are nothing but clever magic tricks—one word at a time.”

✅ AI Adoption is Non-Negotiable

Translators who embrace AI tools to boost productivity will ultimately replace those who don’t. The message is clear: adapt and thrive.

✅ Smart Work Over Hard Work

We reflected on one of John’s favourite quotes by Abraham Lincoln:
“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”

Ep 63. Four Essential Shifts for High 5 Figure Growth in your Freelance Translation Business14 May 202400:07:57

Send us a text

In freelance translation, scaling your business beyond a certain point, usually €36k a year, can seem like a very daunting task. However, by implementing strategic shifts in your approach, you can unlock new levels of growth and profitability. In this blog post, we’ll explore four key shifts that can help you scale your freelance translation business to high 5-figure or yes even 6-figure income. From niching down in your industry to leveraging AI and investing in your growth, these tactics will empower you to thrive in your niche in a competitive market and futureproof your career.

Niche Down in Your Industry:

As a freelance translator, specializing in a specific niche can significantly enhance your marketability and command higher rates. Rather than trying to be a jack-of-all-trades talking to everyone, identify a niche where your language skills and subject matter expertise intersect. Whether it’s legal, medical, technical or marketing translation, niching down allows you to become a trusted shoulder-tapped expert in your specific field.

By lasering in on a niche, you can tailor your marketing efforts to target clients within that industry, demonstrating your understanding of their unique language needs and terminology. This specialization not only makes you stand out from the competition but also enables you to charge premium rates for your specialized services.

By way of example consider a health coach. Perhaps he or she wants to serve men (far too broad a market). Let’s say he wants to serve men over 50 (soon to be my case). Narrower but still too broad. What about men over 50 recovering from heart failure (also my specific case). Fewer and better. Now that’s a well-defined niche he or she can quite easily target.

Use AI to Leverage and Automate Processes:

I´m a technophobe and I was reluctant to embrace AI at the start. I still think machine generated output is quite mediocre. However, in today’s digital age, AI-powered tools can quite simply revolutionize the way freelance translators work, allowing them to streamline processes and increase productivity. From machine translation and CAT (Computer-Assisted Translation) tools to project management software such as Click-Up or Trello, AI can automate routine tasks, such as file formatting, terminology management and quality assurance.

Ep 61. LinkedIn Expert Virginia Katsimpiri Teaches Us Her Tips to Attract High-Caliber Clients and Turboboost Our Freelance Translator Business Growth23 Apr 202400:38:47

Send us a text

This week on the podcast I caught up with Virginia Katsampiri of V Mentoring (Business Coaching for Translators).

Virginia Katsimpiri, PhDc, is a certified translator & translation business owner at vtranslations.gr and business strategist and mentor at vmentoring.com with over 15 years' experience. Holding an ΜA in translation and an executive MBA in client acquisition strategies, she has helped hundreds of freelance translators/interpreters and small business owners worldwide to attract international high-quality clients and rapidly build their profitable business through her mentoring programs.
Virginia is the creator of the Fully Booked Translator Formula & the Ultimate LinkedIn Prospecting System, the first comprehensive, results-oriented Business Mentoring Programs for Language Professionals. She is also the founder of the Ask Your Mentor Anything initiative; a virtual live show where she and other experts discuss translation business-related issues on a weekly basis. Virginia teaches translator mentoring methods and provides seminars, webinars, eBooks and free resources such as “60 Ways To Get Clients As a Translator”. She gives talks at the industry’s biggest international conferences and has appeared in numerous online publications, podcasts and marketing shows. Currently, Virginia studies translators/interpreters’ business performance at PhD level and runs two businesses: www.vtranslations.gr & www.vmentoring.com.

Virginia and I discussed the hot topic of LinkedIn for robust freelance translator personal branding. LinkedIn is an efficient way to directly find clients by leveraging the platform. After she saw results for her own freelance translation business Virginia started teaching her strategies to other industry colleagues.

Virginia tells us that content marketing (the best way to nurture an audience) takes 6-12 months of consistent effort to see results. However, her own teaching focuses mostly on strategic outbound marketing methods.

Her ULPS programme also includes specific automation tools and sales navigator to contact ideal target prospects at scale.

NB: remember that sales navigator is not a mandatory purchase and there are always special offers available if you hunt them down after signing up for a trial version.

Business management tools help you increase productivity and automate processes. Some good examples are XTRF, lsp.expert and Plunet (a tool very commonly used by many agencies these days).

Don’t forget that a sound money mindset is a must have before you build out your entrepreneurial skills.

Here’s why I´m more than happy to promote ULPS to colleagues. In short, because Virginia gets very positive business outcomes for her clients. Just see for yourself

Ep 53. 💡 How to Build the Business of YOU20 Feb 202400:05:21

Send us a text

1. Craft Your Identity in a Crowded Space
Your personal brand is your reputation, digitally amplified. It starts with clarity—who you are, what you stand for, and who you serve. Then, align that message across your LinkedIn, website, content, and interactions.

2. Be Authentically You
Audiences crave real connection, not polished perfection. Share your passions, values, and lived experiences. Authenticity builds trust—the most valuable currency in business today.

3. Embrace the Challenges of Visibility
Staying consistent, relevant, and true to yourself isn’t always easy. But showing up as you are, even when it's hard, is what creates long-term credibility and loyalty.

4. Use Storytelling as Your Superpower
A strong personal brand weaves together a clear, consistent narrative—across your visual identity, messaging, and mission. Stories make you memorable. They also make your business human.

5. Align Personal and Business Values
Your personal and professional selves aren’t separate—they’re interconnected pillars of your success. When your brand reflects who you truly are, growth becomes more natural and sustainable.

💬 Final Thoughts

Your brand isn’t your logo. It’s your voice, your values, your vision.
As a small business owner, I’m continually learning that the secret to a strong brand is showing up fully aligned—with purpose and personality.

I encourage you to do the same, my friend.

Ep 51. 🧠 How to Use Storytelling to Drive Sales Through Content Marketing06 Feb 202400:03:58

Send us a text

If you want to build a daily, weekly, or monthly lead engine for your business, there’s one skill you can’t afford to ignore: storytelling.

In today’s crowded digital space, facts inform—but stories sell. When done well, storytelling captures attention, conveys emotion, and drives the kind of meaningful engagement that actually converts to sales.

🎯 Why Storytelling Matters in Marketing:

It brings your brand to life. It humanises your message. And most importantly—it creates connection.

Here’s how I use storytelling in my own content strategy:

1️⃣ Choose a relevant, relatable story

Think: a personal anecdote, a client win, a memorable experience, or a case study. The key is relevance—your story must align with the service you offer and resonate with the pain points or goals of your audience.

2️⃣ Convey emotion and values

Your stories should reflect your brand values and evoke emotion—trust, inspiration, relief, even urgency. This builds connection and makes your content more memorable.

3️⃣ Use visual language (and visuals)

Paint pictures with your words. Add compelling images or design elements to enhance impact. The more visual and vivid, the more your story will stick.

✅ Remember:

Storytelling is more than fluff—it’s a strategic selling tool that builds credibility, sparks conversation, and moves people to action.

Because at the end of the day...

Stories sell. It’s as simple as that.

Ep 48. 📝 My First Ever Online Journaling Workshop (And Why You Should Try It Too)11 Jan 202400:07:27

Send us a text

Last week, I did something completely new—I spent four full hours in an online journaling workshop. And surprisingly? It flew by.

Journaling is a deeply personal practice with wide-ranging benefits:
 🧠 Self-reflection
 💡 Enhanced creativity
 😌 Stress reduction
 📈 Personal and business growth
 🎯 Goal clarity and focus

There are many styles: gratitude journals, bullet journals, dream logs, reflective diaries...

Me? I’m all about gratitude journaling—simple, powerful, and grounding.

This time, I kept it digital and used content prompts in a basic Google Doc. No fancy platform—just intention and time.

Why do I journal?

To think more clearly.
To plan more intentionally.
To track growth and solve problems creatively.

Yes, it was a challenge at first to time block and sit down. But like brushing your teeth, it can become second nature with consistency.

Ep 46. 🎯 Stuck on What to Say Online? It Might Be Time to Revisit Your ICA19 Dec 202300:06:01

Send us a text

Ever sat down to write a blog or social post and just… froze?

Not because of imposter syndrome (that’s real too), but because you weren’t actually sure what your ideal customer wants or needs from you?

It can feel like you're pulling content ideas out of a black hole—and that’s a sign of a deeper issue.

In this episode of Freelancer Training, I’m unpacking how to define your Ideal Customer Avatar (ICA)—and why this one person is the cornerstone of your business success.

💡 Why This Matters:

If you don’t know exactly who you’re serving and why, you’re not building a business—you’re guessing. And guesswork doesn’t scale.

Your ICA is your perfect-fit customer. The one person:

✔️ Who actually wants what you offer
✔️ Who needs your content or services
✔️ Who you love working with

Once you’ve defined this person—what they value, what they struggle with, what they dream about—everything changes.

✅ Content becomes easier to write
✅ Offers become easier to sell
✅ Marketing becomes clearer, sharper, and more effective

This isn’t fluff—it’s foundational.

Ep 44. How Freelance Translators Can Market to Direct Clients05 Dec 202300:09:04

Send us a text

If you're a freelance translator looking to transition from agency work to direct client relationships, this episode is packed with marketing strategies and client prospecting tips to help you secure higher-paying projects.

🚀 Why Work with Direct Clients?

Direct clients often offer better rates, faster communication and greater control over project quality—no intermediaries slowing down responses or limiting your professional input.

But working directly with businesses and institutions also comes with new challenges, such as higher expectations and extra service requests like DTP, additional language combinations or consulting services.

💡 Marketing Ideas for Finding Direct Clients:

✅ Use your agency end clients as inspiration (DO NOT POACH!)

✅ Target European higher education institutions with academic programs in English

✅ Explore industry professional associations that offer membership directories and event listings

✅ … And much much more!

Ep 43. 🎯 Year-End Reflections + What’s Next in 202423 Nov 202300:16:29

Send us a text

It’s that time of year when many of us pause to reflect, give thanks, and set our sights on what’s ahead.

As you look back over the past year, ask yourself:

📈 Have I built a steady, sustainable income stream through my services?
💡 Have I moved closer to the kind of business and life I want?

As for me?

The year unfolded completely differently from how I imagined. In the best—and most stretching—ways.

Late November (already?!), is always a key moment for me:

 ✔ Reflect on what worked
 ✔ Release what didn’t
 ✔ Recalibrate for what’s next

2023 was a year of validated learning—testing ideas, launching offers, and getting real feedback. It was uncomfortable at times, but also deeply rewarding.

🚀 I said some bold YESes.
🌱 I grew as a business owner and as a person.
💬 I welcomed my first cohort of early adopters.
🙌 I saw the real impact of what I’ve built.

Looking ahead to 2024, here’s where I’m focusing:

✅ Design a business that gives me more of the work I love
✅ Build consistent, sustainable momentum
✅ Stay aligned with what moves the needle
✅ Embrace the long game—one intentional action at a time
✅ Keep relationships personal, relevant, and real

In this special year-end episode, I walk you through my biggest lessons of the year and preview what’s coming next.

Ep 31. The Power of a Robust Online Presence for Language Professionals Part II25 Jul 202300:04:51

Send us a text

Here comes yet another truthbomb.

The Significance of a Personal Website: yeees, while LinkedIn offers a valuable platform for professional networking, language professionals should ALSO consider establishing their own personal websites. Here's why:

  1. Enhanced Professional Image: A personal website acts as a centralized hub where language professionals can showcase their work, expertise, and accomplishments. It provides a more personalized and professional image compared to a social media profile alone. A well-designed website conveys a sense of professionalism and helps establish trust with potential clients.
  2. Increased Visibility: Having a website allows language professionals to be found easily through search engines. By optimizing their website for relevant keywords and regularly publishing high-quality content, professionals can improve their search engine rankings and attract organic traffic to their site. This increased visibility can lead to more inquiries and business opportunities.
  3. Portfolio and Testimonials: Language professionals can utilize their personal websites to showcase their portfolio of work, including translations, writing samples, or language tutoring materials. Additionally, including testimonials from satisfied clients can further strengthen credibility and instil confidence in potential clients.
  4. Flexibility and Customization: Unlike social media platforms, personal websites offer more flexibility and customization options. Professionals can design their websites to reflect their unique style and branding. They can also integrate various features such as contact forms, online booking systems, or blog sections to engage with their audience and offer additional value.

My take? In today's digital landscape, language professionals cannot afford to overlook the significance of a robust online presence. Platforms like LinkedIn and personal websites offer unique opportunities to connect with potential clients, expand professional networks, and establish a strong personal brand. By leveraging these tools effectively, language professionals can elevate their visibility, credibility, and ultimately, their success in the industry. So, whether you're a translator, interpreter, language tutor, or any other language professional, it's high time to embrace the digital realm and harness its power head-on to unlock new opportunities.

 You’re welcome.

Ep 29. The Power of a Robust Online Presence for Language Professionals Part I11 Jul 202300:04:52

Send us a text

Truthbomb.

In today's digital era, having a strong online presence is vital for professionals across all industries. But it's especially important for language professionals who rely on effective communication to connect with clients, build their reputation, and build out their professional network. This 2-part episode explores the significance of a robust online presence for language professionals, with a special focus on two powerful platforms: LinkedIn and personal websites.

Here's the thing.

LinkedIn has emerged as the go-to platform for professionals across various domains, including language professionals. With over 740 million members worldwide, LinkedIn provides a unique opportunity to showcase your skills, experiences, and expertise to a vast audience of potential clients, collaborators, and employers.

  1. Professional Networking: LinkedIn serves as a virtual networking hub, enabling language professionals to connect with like-minded individuals, industry experts, and potential clients. By actively participating in relevant groups, engaging in discussions, and sharing valuable content, professionals can establish themselves as thought leaders in their field.
  2. Personal Branding: A well-crafted LinkedIn profile allows language professionals to create a strong personal brand. By highlighting their skills, certifications, and accomplishments, professionals can build the know, like and trust factor among their target audience. Recommendations and endorsements from clients and colleagues further enhance their reputation and increase their visibility.
  3. Job Opportunities: LinkedIn is an excellent platform for language professionals seeking job opportunities. Recruiters and employers often turn to LinkedIn to find qualified candidates for language-related positions. By optimizing their profiles with relevant keywords and showcasing their expertise, professionals can increase their chances of being discovered by potential employers.

My conclusion? In today's digital landscape, language professionals just cannot afford to overlook the significance of a robust online presence. Platforms like LinkedIn and personal websites offer unique opportunities to connect with potential clients, expand professional networks, and establish a strong personal brand. By leveraging these tools effectively, language professionals can elevate their visibility, credibility, and yes, ultimately their success in the industry! So, whether you're a translator, interpreter, language tutor or any other language professional come to think of it, it's time to embrace the digital realm headon and harness its power to unlock new opportunities.

Our next episode explores personal websites in much greater depth.

You’re welcome.
