40. How To Limit Food Waste & Improve Sustainable Pheasant Consumption10 Jun 202200:34:17

While some people may see the pheasant as nothing more than a game animal, it is important to remember that every creature has a role to play in the food chain. This means that when we play a role in the killing of a pheasant, we have a responsibility to ensure that all parts of the bird are used and consumed. There are many ways to make use of a pheasant. The meat can be eaten by humans or dogs, the feathers can be used for fly fishing, and even the bones can be used to make stock. Nothing should go to waste! Not only is it important to respect the animal by using all of its parts, but it is also important from a practical standpoint. Wasting food is simply not an option, especially when there are so many people and animals that go hungry every day.

In this podcast, we talk to Amy Lowe about how Hoddy’s Premium Dog Food use pheasant carcass in their dog food to ensure more of each bird is used.

29. How Do I Tell The Dog The Shooting Seasons Over? 25 Mar 202200:30:51

It's been a long season working hard, and your dog deserves a break. But how do you tell them that the shooting season is over now?

This podcast episode hosted by LWDG Founder Joanne Perrott is all about transitioning your dog from a busy work schedule to a more relaxed lifestyle during the training season.
Emma Stevens and Abbie Reid, Experts from the LWDG Group, shared their tips for making this transition successfully.

They recommend using the offseason to work on obedience training, fixing any problems that arose during the last season, and gradually introducing your dog to the things they'll be doing during the upcoming season.

By taking things slowly and consolidating old skills before moving on to new ones, you'll help your dog be successful in the next season. Make sure to listen to this week's podcast, and check out the blog at www.thelwdg.com

26. Grouse Counting And Gundogs04 Mar 202200:43:50

You may have heard of the grouse count, but have you ever wondered what it is?

The grouse count is an annual event carried out by moorland keepers in the UK. It helps to determine whether grouse shooting will take place on an estate during a particular year or not. LWDG Featured Expert Lucy Hall explains to LWDG Founder Jo Perrott how the grouse count is done and how important these times of year are for the shooting season.

Lucy explains what grouse counting is, how important it is for moorland keepers, and how it is done. We also look at some of the dogs commonly used for this task and explore why they have been traditionally used for this job.

More about Lucy:

Passionate and creative with a personal touch, Lucy Claire Events specialises in bespoke event and party planning. With meticulous attention to detail, a classic style with a contemporary twist and a bursting little black book of contacts and trusted suppliers, we create memorable and magical experiences, always with the client at heart.

I've been blessed with a wonderful country upbringing, with shooting and working dogs playing a huge part of my life. I've grown up with my father working pointers (English) and setters, and both parents having a springer each for the shooting season. I now have 2 English setters and 2 x springers of my own, all of which I work.

Working setters and pointers is a huge passion of my father's, which he has passed on to me. So I've been shooting over pointers and setters - mainly grouse - for the last ten years, and have been trialling, grouse counting and running my own English setter for shooting parties on the grouse moors for the past five years. I've also a young ten month old English setter who is showing great promise with his fabulous pace and style that I'm really excited about!

I am also a 'makey learny' judge (lol) for the pointer and setter trials, so far having carried out two appointments. I have two further ones this spring, one on the moors and one on the partridge, which I'm very excited about.

25. Working With The Dog In Front Of You 25 Feb 202200:27:25

Welcome to this week's episode of LWDG PODDOG. This week we will be speaking about the fact that every gun dog is unique and how you can learn to work with a dog in front of you.

In this podcast, LWDG Founder Joanne Perrott is joined by  Experienced Trainers and LWDG Group Experts – Claire Denyer, Sam Thorneycroft-Taylor,  Emma Stephens, Jemma Martin and LWDG Featured Experts Abbie Reid, Nicci Kenny and  Rose Setten, as they discuss how we can give our working dogs individual training that suits them.

The team chats about how they individualise their training programmes to fit the dog rather than expecting it to fit into a pre-determined gundog training programme. They also talk about how important it is to know your dog as an individual and not just as part of a breed or type.

Thank you for joining us this week on LWDG PODDOG. We hope you have found this episode informative and helpful. As always, we would love to hear from you, so please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Join LWDG Founder Jo Perrott with Experienced Trainers and LWDG Experts – Claire Denyer, Sam Thorneycroft-Taylor, Rose Setten, Emma Stephens, Abie Reid, Nicci Kenny and Jemma Martin as they discuss how we can give our working dog ‘choices’ when training.

As a dog owner and handler, I'm sure you have seen a lot of bad choices made by trainers, owners and dogs when it comes to obedience and behaviour, and it seems that many people have lost sight of the true meaning of the word "choice" when it comes to training their dogs.

The word ‘choice’ is both a contentious and emotive issue, as the LWDG Experts reveal in this highly engaging and informative discussion. In this episode of LWDG PODDOG, we'll be discussing what choice means for a dog and how to train them to make the right choices.

16. The Science Behind Correction- How To Correct Constructively24 Dec 202101:03:13

Join our amazing Featured Experts Emma Stevens, Claire Denyer, and Samantha Thorneycroft-Taylor as they deliver a live session to 100 participants on the topic of Correction.

This webinar took place on the 1st of June 2021 and is jam-packed with information on anything and everything to do with correction. The Featured Experts provide examples of a variety of corrections, along with explanations of where they may be used.

Please Note: Examples in this webinar include corrections our Featured Experts WOULD NOT USE. They are there for information and understanding purposes only. Our Featured Experts are experienced and qualified trainers and want you to learn the science behind correction so that you can understand further how it can be used constructively, and where its use may not be constructive.

9. Understanding Reactive, Fearful or Aggressive Dogs05 Nov 202100:33:06

Reactive, fearful or aggressive dogs cause a lot of stress to their owners and the people around them.  It's hard for dog owners to understand what is going on with their dog,  and are often desperate for help when their dog is reactive, fearful or aggressive.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution to these issues because every situation is different - the causes can be complex and multi-layered. It’s not always clear what approach will work best for your dog's specific needs.

This weeks podcast episode provides a chance to learn from an experienced professional.  LWDG Featured Expert Helena Woodfield explains common causes behind reactivity in dogs and how she approaches these cases so you can decide if it might be helpful to you too!
