For this episode of the Foto Podcast, I am sharing a conversation I had with Rashod Taylor in early 2021 during a photography conference I was hosting.
In Rashod’s work, you’ll find themes of race, culture, family, and Legacy. He often photographs his son, family, and friends during everyday life. Rashod frequently uses large format cameras and also teaches others how to do wet plate photography.
Rashod has exhibited and published his work across the United States and internationally. The Museum of Fine Arts Houston has acquired his work, and he is the 2021 recipient of the Arnold Newman Prize For New Directions in Photographic Portraiture. He’s a 2020 Critical Mass Top 50 Finalist, winner of Lens Culture’s Critics Choice award, and a 2021 Feature Shoot Emerging Photography Awards winner. Rashod’s clients include National Geographic, Essence Magazine, ProPublica, and Buzzfeed News. His work has been featured in CNN, The Atlantic, The New Yorker, The Guardian, Feature Shoot, and Lenscratch, among others. He is currently working on a series called Little Black Boy, where he documents his son’s life while examining the Black American experience and fatherhood. Make sure to see more of his work at rashodtaylor.com and on Instagram at rashodtaylorphoto.

Welcome to the Foto Podcast!
In this episode, I delve into the world of large-format photography with the talented Kate Miller-Wilson, whose captivating work predominantly revolves around her close-knit family in Minnesota. Kate embraces the beauty of imperfection, exploring the power and vulnerability that lies within the flaws of her images, a departure from the pixel-perfect precision often sought in digital photography. We discuss her self-portraits and the empowerment in controlling one's representation. Kate also sheds light on the journey she’s shared with her son creating a deeper connection between them through the experiences of his autism and her photography.

Richard Sharum - Part Three
vendredi 1 septembre 2023 • Durée 28:05
Welcome to part three of our series with renowned photographer Richard Sharum.
As someone deeply rooted in the study of history, especially the tumultuous Civil War era, Richard showcases an intense drive to understand the divisions that plague modern America. He discusses his transformative journey to unravel the mystery of the Central United States, an area often dismissively labeled "flyover country." This stretch of land, primarily covering states like Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and the Dakotas, has, for many, become a blind spot—overshadowed politically, socially, and culturally.
Motivated by global perceptions, historical events, and, notably, the shocking Capitol storming on January 6th, Richard embarked on a mission to capture the heart and soul of these regions, free from the constraints of political bias. His project, "Spina Americana" (Latin for "American Spine"), sees him traverse a 100-mile wide corridor stretching from the US-Mexico border to the US-Canadian border. Through his lens, Richard hopes to offer a fresh perspective, allowing the world to see the people of this region as they genuinely are—diverse, complex, and unequivocally American.
Join us in this compelling episode as Richard shares anecdotes from his travels, his approach to spontaneous photography, and his undying passion for discovering the hidden depths of his homeland. Whether you're a photography enthusiast, a history buff, or someone seeking to understand the multifaceted narrative of America, this episode promises enlightening insights and thought-provoking conversations.

Richard Sharum - Part One
jeudi 24 août 2023 • Durée 45:19
Welcome to the Foto Podcast.
This is episode 7, and it’s the start of a 3-part episode series with documentary photographer Richard Sharum.
In this episode, Richard talks about his approach to documentary photography, why he’s passionate about creating more empathy, and how photography can help bring people together.
In Part 2 and Part 3 of my conversation with Richard, we will dive deep into two of his ongoing projects.
In Part 2, we will talk about his ‘American Homicide’ project, where he covers murder in Dallas, Texas.
In Part 3, we will talk about his ‘Spina America’ project, where he is documenting the people he meets in a 100-mile side corridor from the Texas/Mexico border up to Canada.
His first book is titled “CAMPESINO CUBA” through GOST Books. In my conversation with him, we did not talk much about his work in Cuba, but I recently purchased a copy. After receiving it and going through it briefly, I will vouch for how high-quality Richard’s photography is and how well the book is printed. Richard’s work in Cuba is unique and worth your time to explore all the layers within it.
You can support Richard’s work by purchasing any remaining copies of his ‘Campesino Cuba’ book or schedule a portfolio review with him through his website. Either way, his deep understanding of photography will move you, and he will challenge you to create more meaningful work. You can also follow Richard on Instagram.
