| What's Driving The Ongoing Surge In Homeschooling? | 18 Jan 2024 | 00:08:41 | |
In 2019, before the pandemic, 3.7% of children aged 5 to 17 were schooled primarily at home either by parents or through virtual classes, up from 2% in 1999, according to a survey by the National Center for Education Statistics, which attributes that increase in part to information technology making home instruction more feasible. The NCES doesn’t have more recent data yet, but an analysis by the Washington Post found the number of homeschooled children has surged 51% since the 2017-18 school year. Meanwhile, private school enrollment rose just 7% while public school enrollment declined 4%. The big spurt in homeschooling came during the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years, when virtual classes and mask mandates were widespread. Since then, as public schools have returned to (more or less) normal, homeschooling numbers have dropped some, but held on to much of their pandemic era gains. Notably, some of the students who fled public school for home during the pandemic are now enrolling in microschools. Emma Whitford, an education reporter for Forbes, joins ‘Forbes Talks’ to discuss the factors contributing to the surge in homeschooling. | Where Tiger Woods May Go Next After Ending His $500 Million Nike Partnership | 18 Jan 2024 | 00:10:23
After 27 years with Nike as his biggest sponsor, Tiger Woods confirmed Monday in a statement on X that he and the apparel giant were parting ways, ending a partnership that has paid him more than $500 million (before taxes and agents’ fees), according to Forbes estimates. The deal accounts for more than a quarter of the 48-year-old golfer’s estimated $1.8 billion in career pretax earnings—a record total for an active athlete, roughly $300 million ahead of No. 2 Cristiano Ronaldo—and dwarfs the PGA Tour-record $121 million he has made in prize money. It is also a big reason that Woods joined Forbes’ billionaires list in 2022, becoming one of only two athletes to enter the three-comma club while still active in their sports, along with NBA superstar LeBron James. (Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson are the other two athlete billionaires, but each reached the milestone long after he had retired from basketball.) Woods, who led Forbes’ list of the world’s highest-paid athletes every year from 2002 to 2011, now has an estimated net worth of $1.1 billion. Brett Knight, Forbes SportsMoney reporter joins Forbes 'Talks' to discuss the end of the Tiger Woods and Nike partnership and whats ahead for the golf superstar. | Cryogenic Industries Founder Pledges $400 Million Fortune To Caltech | 29 Dec 2023 | 00:04:01
Engineer Ross M. Brown, who built and sold an industrial conglomerate for more than $400 million, is donating nearly all his wealth to promising mid-career chemistry and physics professors at a range of universities. Caltech announced Friday morning that engineering entrepreneur and alumnus Ross M. Brown is donating $400 million to the university to support fundamental science research. However, there’s an unusual element to the generous gift, called the Ross Brown Investigators Program: It’s designed to support mid-career physics and chemistry professors–but the academics getting the financial awards won’t be at Caltech. This is the first large gift of its kind where the recipient of the donation will turn around and give nearly all of it to faculty at other universities. “Caltech won't be eligible to receive any of the investigator awards, just because of the conflict of interest, nor will they be allowed to sit on the science advisory board. So it's really Caltech’s general interest in science itself that has led them to get to where they are,” explains Brown, who graduated from Caltech in 1956 with a degree in mechanical engineering and obtained a master's degree from the Pasadena, California university the following year. Caltech will administer the program, while an independent review board will choose eight fellows annually from more than a dozen invited universities across the country. Each chosen investigator will receive a $2 million, five-year fellowship. Caltech will administer the program until 2070, assuming sufficient returns on invested funds. | From Iga Swiatek To Eileen Gu: Here Are The Highest-Paid Female Athletes of 2023 | 23 Dec 2023 | 00:08:19
Iga Świątek, Eileen Gu and Coco Gauff are the top earners for the past 12 months as tennis players continue to dominate the annual pay ranking. With Serena Williams retired and Naomi Osaka sidelined for the year as she recovered from injuries and then childbirth, the list of the world’s highest-paid female athletes has a new No. 1: 22-year-old Polish tennis star Iga Świątek, who made an estimated $23.9 million in 2023 (before taxes and agents’ fees). Since Forbes introduced the ranking in 2008, Maria Sharapova is the only other woman to have claimed the crown, reigning for eight straight years until Williams took over in 2016. Świątek’s monster year included the women’s singles title at the French Open, and four new endorsement deals, but it’s also no coincidence that she—like Osaka, Williams and Sharapova before her—plays tennis. Twelve of the world’s 20 highest-paid female athletes, and nine of the top 10, come from the sport, which offers sizable prize money and ample marketing opportunities for female athletes. Golf and soccer each have two athletes represented in this year’s top 20, with badminton, basketball, gymnastics and freestyle skiing rounding out the list with one athlete apiece. Combined, the 20 top-earning women made an estimated $226 million in 2023. That is a 13% drop from 2022’s $258 million, but the decline can be attributed almost entirely to the loss of Williams (who hauled in $41.3 million on last year’s list) and Osaka’s tumble to $15 million (from $51.1 million in 2022) amid her long layoff. Forbes SportsMoney Reporter Justin Birnbaum, joins 'Forbes Talks' to list the highest paid female athletes. | Why Students Should Pursue College As A Place To "Learn How To Learn" | 23 Dec 2023 | 00:13:33
If we view the economic value of college based solely on the direct outcomes of post-graduation performance, then perhaps we're evaluating the investment based on incongruent objectives and misaligned time horizons. That is to say, my career-based decisions should be based on my career goals. As such, I should choose the best course of action to increase my likelihood of achieving them. For some, that might mean a college degree; for others, perhaps not. If we only measure the value of college based on immediate value realization, then we likely ignore the long-term financial benefits that college provides, like the network. | How To Choose A College That Will Pay You Back | 22 Dec 2023 | 00:13:35
As the cost of college continues to rise, public discourse around higher education has sparked debate about whether the investment is worth it. Considering that college graduates' salaries have been outpaced by the costs of a degree, it's no wonder that consumer confidence has waned. Any other economic exchange would warrant such scrutiny, so it's essential that we view college in market terms, not just as a social chevron. But what is the economic exchange between higher ed and would-be students? Prior generations were indoctrinated with the belief that a college degree promised a "good job" and good-standing status in society. However, the democratization of technology has reduced barriers to entry and created new opportunities for budding entrepreneurs and savvy creators to subvert these traditional paths and still obtain similar benefits that would typically come with having a degree. Some even argue that these outcomes are more likely to be achieved without the debt that so many students must accrue to get the degree and realize its potential benefit. | Beyoncé's New Worth Hits $800 Million | 18 Dec 2023 | 00:12:54
“It should cost a billion to look this good,” Beyoncé sings on “Pure/Honey” from her 2022 album, Renaissance. Given the stellar year the 42-year-old entertainer has had, money doesn’t appear to be a problem—she is now on a glidepath to becoming a billionaire, with a net worth of $800 million, Forbes estimates. In June, Beyoncé ranked No. 48 on Forbes’ annual list of the richest self-made women in America, with a net worth of $540 million. The dramatic boost to her fortune can be attributed to her substantial 2023 earnings—she banked an estimated $100 million (post-tax) from the Renaissance World Tour—as well as an adjustment to Forbes’ estimate of her music catalog and her art collection. Sources tell Forbes the singer’s catalog is now worth some $300 million. The remainder of her net worth is made up of the personal assets she shares with her billionaire husband, Jay-Z, as well as her business holdings through Parkwood Entertainment, which she founded in 2010. (Representatives for Beyoncé did not respond to Forbes’ request for comment.) One of the major drivers to the increase to Beyoncé’s net worth was her blockbuster Renaissance tour, which ran from May to October and spanned 39 cities in 17 countries. Renaissance brought in more than $579 million in revenue, making it one of the top 10 highest-grossing tours in history, according to Billboard. “She’s one of the music gods,” IAG chairman Dennis Arfa, who represents acts including Billy Joel and Metallica, tells Forbes. “The business she does, and the amount of people that she draws, that she can do a movie on her own. She can do things most can’t.” Stay Connected Forbes newsletters: https://newsletters.editorial.forbes.com Forbes on Facebook: http://fb.com/forbes Forbes Video on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/forbes Forbes Video on Instagram: http://instagram.com/forbes More From Forbes: http://forbes.com Forbes covers the intersection of entrepreneurship, wealth, technology, business and lifestyle with a focus on people and success.
