| Iron Sky | 02 Sep 2024 | 01:06:11 | |
As the boys venture off the list, we present to you a new sub-series: THE DOGS OF WAR... for... you know... bad war movies.
This week on Dogs of War: the kitchen is heating up as Jason and Brendan go to pawn their DVD player for a copy of 2012's Iron Sky on DVD. The problem becomes obvious when they get home and Brendan's VHS player won't accept the disc; this means war. Jason has dug a trench and erected many machine guns around Brendan's home as Brendan prepares to send his tiny doggy, Max, to the moon in a homemade rocket to establish a beachhead for his family's new life. Eventually they watch the movie on the internet and talk about it on Skype.
Next week: back to one of the worst German dudes.

The humour train continues as the guys talk about the ICONIC comedy Borat. Can they pinpoint all the points in history when people embraced the film, rejected it and then embraced it again after enough time had passed? What exactly IS a humour coach? Isn't it quaint how these shocking reactions from people are viewed in the world of 2006? Are the nice people actually nice or just very convinced that foreign visitors know absolutely nothing about customs? All this and more!
Next week: time to get sad again... with Mike Leigh!

| Ashes and Diamonds | 10 Jun 2024 | 01:32:02 | |
We talked about Kanal so why not talk about another Wajda War™ film - Ashes and Diamonds. While this one focuses less on war itself and more of the implications of post-war and one's own morality, this is our podcast so don't tell us what to do, MOM!!!
Ahem.
Anyhoo, the fellas chat it up about this film and discuss the scene with very realistic (if not real?) drunk acting, the stark imagery particularly with religious symbols, the massive changes between this and the propagandistic source material, the Polish James Dean and much more.

| Four Lions | 16 May 2022 | 01:53:18 | |
This week, the guys go the dark recesses of what you can get away with in comedy with a discussion of Chris Morris' satirical Four Lions. How carefully does this movie skirt the line between bad taste and good fun all the while avoiding harmful stereotypes? Does the movie actually address more than one sect of Muslims? What famous conspiracy theorist does Barry remind the guys of...? Does this movie pass the Riz Test? All that and much more!
Next week: yet another ICONIC comedy.

| Porky's | 04 Apr 2022 | 01:23:16 | |
Before they move back to the realm of British, Brendan and Jason decide to talk about a "Canuck Puck," a Canadian film pick from each of them that they have never seen before... and it's Brendan's turn first - Porky's. Yes, it's the Floridian Canadian classic from director Bob Clark that answers the question "can something that ages this horribly still be funny?" with... well, you'll have to listen to find out. Kim Cattrall's committed howling performance, super horny "teenagers," washroom peepholes, clumsy attempts at addressing racism in the 50s - it's all here, baby!
Next week: the second of our two Canuck Pucks. It's back to podcast favourite Sarah Polley with a discussion of her film Away From Her.

It's time for some Maritime shine as the guys break down the classic 1970 rags-to-rags (?) story about two Nova Scotians traveling to Toronto for the promise of better work - Goin' Down the Road. How authentically Maritime is this movie? Did director Donald Shebib use authentic transients and war veterans for key scenes? Does Jayne Eastwood make a seemingly thankless role worth something just based on her facial reactions alone? Does the movie have an anti-Capitalist stance? It's time to start with the next venture - OUR Screen, OUR Country. Brendan and Jason take a look at the Top 10 Canadian Film (as released by the Toronto International Film Festival in 2015). To begin though, they go through some of their favourite pieces of Canadian film and television. Does Canadian humour bridge the gap between American and British comedy? Why does very little Canadian comedy make a splash in other countries? Does anyone remember Kevin Spencer? All this and more in this week's episode!
Next week: we start the list with #10 - the French-Canadian docufiction Les Ordres.

| Run Silent, Run Deep | 27 May 2024 | 01:18:29 | |
You wanna go down, son? You wanna go all the way down? This ain't no Jim Cameron tour, fella, this is mortal combat at 150 feet below! Light up a Lucky and peel your shirt off 'cause it's getting real sweaty down here in 1958's Run Silent, Run Deep. Clark Gable, Burt Lancaster and Don Rickles crammed in a tube! Man... I wish Rickles was the captain. Now, that would have been a film! But no - they wanted Clark and I was like "fine." Stupid studio politics.
Next week: going off the grid again... and more naval warfare!
