The Athletic’s Josh Yohe: Undefeated Pittsburgh Penguins Host Matthew Shaefer and the Isles 10/09/2509 oct. 202501:01:09

The Athletic’s Josh Yohe: Undefeated Pittsburgh Penguins Host Matthew Shaefer and the Isles 10/09/25

Joined today by The Athletic’s Josh Yohe, Jordan DeFigio and Jeff Taylor are back for a Thursday afternoon, Penguins-Home-Opener edition of Fly Penguins Fly Podcast.

Will the Penguins build on Tuesday night’s defensive clinic of a victory over the Rangers, or will they revert to what Pens fans have come to know as ‘the NEW Penguins Hockey’ aka let the Islanders come into PPG Paints Arena and spoil the home opener?

Josh Yohe shares a story involving Sidney Crosby and Ben Kindel that we think you’ll love, plus the panel imagines a scenario in which the Pittsburgh Penguins overachieve and make the playoffs: Hey, why not dream? Yeah, yeah, we know.

Josh Yohe doesn’t drink coffee. But don’t let that dissuade you from enjoying a delicious cup of Espresso A Mano’s Ardi Ethiopia roast, available weekly at EAM’s brick and mortar cafes.

Pittsburgh Penguins Opener: 7th Avenue Freeze-Out 10/03/2503 oct. 202500:55:21

Pittsburgh Penguins Opener: 7th Avenue Freeze-Out 10/03/25

Today’s episode kicks off with a special appearance by one of our favorite baristas at our partner, Espresso a Mano’s Dormont café.

After some armchair Penguins Hockey quarterback’ing by co-hosts - Jeff Taylor and Jordan DeFigio, opining is conducted as to which NHL hockey club various Marvel / DC superheroes and supervillains might support - if they were in fact …real.

The problem of the Penguins’ 2025-2026 likely netminding personnel is bemoaned, partly analyzed, though mostly complained about. Jeff and Jordan talk about a couple upcoming music performances and releases of their own, and the location of Madison Square Garden - the site of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ season opener against the hosting NY Rangers - is clarified in spite of the much-used phrase, ‘On Broadway’ when referring to the Rags’ home rink.

Pittsburgh Penguins Hockey Is Back: Fidge Flies Solo 09/20/25

Flying solo for the first time in a while, Jordan DeFigio has it all covered:

  • Kyle Dubas continues along in his unenviable quest to both rebuild and appease a confoundingly-still-elite Sidney Crosby …and his super-agent, Pat Brisson

  • The Steelers are Steeler-ing ...and there’s no end in sight

  • Fly Penguins Fly Podcast looks ahead to an exciting October 2025 collaboration with the OHL’s Erie Otters

  • …and much more!

The Unthinkable: Pittsburgh Penguins Captain Sidney Crosby Has Requested A Trade 09/13/2513 sept. 202500:49:06

The Unthinkable: Pittsburgh Penguins Captain Sidney Crosby Has Requested A Trade 09/13/25

Sell the team to whomever you want, we don’t care. Put whoever you want in goal on September 27th when the Pens play meaningless hockey against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Yeah, even Marc-André Fleury. For the record, we’ve done the Farewell-to-Flower thing at PPG Paints Arena THREE times already. cough-cough .. money-grab .. cough-cough…

None of that matters anymore, because…

Sidney Crosby, via his longtime agent, Pat Brisson has for all intents and purposes made it known that he would like to be traded; essentially he’s requested to play NHL hockey for a team other than the Penguins. This is a developing story and we, Jordan DeFigio and Jeff Taylor found out about it AS we were recording this episode. So YES, Flyers fans, Devils fans, Rangers fans, etc: This Bud’s For You. And LEAFS fans? Yinz have REALLY earned this one. Drink it up, you know it’s literally all you have.

Josh Yohe’s article, discussed in this episode:
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6616219/2025/09/11/sidney-crosby-pittsburgh-penguins-trade-rumors/

00:00 - Marc-André Fleury signs PTO contract with Penguins
09:49 - Reflections on 24th ann. of 9/11 and coming together as a country
15:47 - Prospects Challenge: What it means and who to look out for
19:42 - Pittsburgh Steelers Dub in Week 1: Chris Boswell vs. Terry Bozzio
25:09 - Jordan discovers, in real time that Sidney Crosby has requested a trade. All hell breaks loose.
35:07 - Dan Muse: How young will the new HC run the Penguins' bench - especially with a potential Crosby trade on the horizon
41:54 - Pittsburgh Penguins 2025-2026 Promotional Schedule: Which items are the most covetable?

Pittsburgh Penguins For Sale 09/04/25

Rumors inspired journalistic deep-dives, with the resulting articles giving way to a fanbase-wide assumption that the Fenway Sports Group’s tenure as owners of 1967’s most successful expansion NHL franchise may come to an end - sooner than most anyone would have thought.

On today’s episode, FPF co-hosts Jeff Taylor and Jordan DeFigio take you through two written pieces, recently published in The Athletic. Written by frequent guests of the program Josh Yohe and Rob Rossi, Penguins fans can read up on probably the final bits of Summer 2025 news and speculation regarding their favorite hockey club.

Josh Yohe’s article, discussed in this episode:

Happy 38th Birthday to Sidney Crosby 08/07/2508 août 202500:17:07

Happy 38th Birthday to Sidney Crosby 08/07/25

There are two things about Sidney Crosby’s birthday which every Penguins fan knows by heart. For one, the date of our Captain’s arrival on Earth is emblazoned on Crosby’s back-and-shoulders, any time he skates for the Pittsburgh Penguins: “8/7.” Secondly, Sid’s birthday means that training camp is just around the corner, signaling an encouraging “midpoint” in an otherwise mundane summer offseason.

Pittsburgh Penguins Hockey At The Center Of The Sun 07/22/25

In the style of what fictional Chief Of Staff to POTUS, Leo McGarry (played by the great, late John Spencer) once called “Big Block Of Cheese Day,” Jordan and Jeff have gathered up a whole slew of random Pittsburgh Penguins ‘news’ items for YOU, the listener. And in the way that only your esteemed co-hosts can, these bits and pieces of chum are tossed into otherwise hockey-less Summer waters, tiding Yinz over until our next episode drops. Mario Lemieux’s Hockey Clock 07/16/2516 juil. 202500:47:18

Mario Lemieux’s Hockey Clock 07/16/25

Renewed media buzz has gathered steam around the potential reacquisition of the Pittsburgh Penguins by the Lemieux/Burkle/Morehouse ownership group. Kris Letang’s summer workout videos have surfaced and they’re - of course - completely insane and sweat-inducing. Erik Karlsson still seems somewhat un-trade-able, in spite of a significant increase in the NHL’s salary cap. The Canucks goalie Arturs Silovs has been traded to your Pittsburgh Penguins - and it could be a game changer for the Pens: more on that NEXT episode.

In Bryan Rust We Trust - or - FTLOG Kyle Dubas: Please Do Not Trade Bryan Rust

With the 2025 NHL Entry Draft (June 27-28) just barely in our rearview mirrors and free agency upon us (July 1st), Jeff Taylor and Jordan DeFigio wax hockey about what binds Pittsburgh Penguins fans together - a love of the game, a deep appreciation what Sidney Patrick Crosby has given this town - and hockey fans around the world, and the stark realization that we are in for a stinker of a 2025-2026 regular season campaign.

Commiserate and ponder with us, as we all - listeners included - head into a much-needed national holiday weekend. Stay cool, friends, and stay safe.

Pittsburgh Penguins Fandom ft. Anthony Jardine 06/02/25

Woven into this full-length conversation with lifelong Penguins fan Anthony Jardine are the recognizable sounds of the Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby eras of Pittsburgh hockey.

We revisit our 2023 chat with 2x Stanley Cup Champion Jay Caufield, as the former NHL enforcer and current Penguins broadcaster reminisces about his successful re-training of Lemieux for the legend’s 2000 NHL comeback.

At the 24:20 mark, listeners can close their eyes for just a few seconds and be transported back to “The Igloo” itself, as producer Jeff Taylor digs up and strings together the sounds of Pittsburgh Penguins hockey at the old Civic Arena.

Destination And Subject: Kyle Dubas and Pittsburgh Penguins Commence Head Coach Search 05/05/25

Rick Tocchet, David Carle, and others have been widely discussed as candidates to fill the vacancy Mike Sullivan left when he departed the Steel City. Jeff Taylor and Jordan DeFigio have at least one warm-to-hot take as to who might fit the bill behind the Pittsburgh Penguins' bench, especially while the team undergoes its nearly inevitable transitionary period.

Sidney Crosby's agent, Pat Brisson told Pierre LeBrun this weekend that his client would be traveling to Sweden to participate in the IIHF Men's World Championships. What's more, Crosby's longtime teammate and dear friend Marc André Fleury will be making the trip as well, representing Team Canada alongside his old captain.

Sid won't be Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia's sole ambassador in the tournament, though. Nathan McKinnon, newly unoccupied as his Avalanche were eliminated from contention in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, will dress beside Crosby and Fleury in Canada's locker room.

WARNING This episode contains samples of Dr. Claw's voice. He's really scary. Ok, you've been warned.

Jeff Taylor and Jordan DeFigio convene for a season’s-end chat, at the tail end of the Penguins’ 24-25 campaign. A resounding victory over Alex Ovechkin and the first place Capitals is bittersweet on the tongue, as the Pens best the Caps in game 82.

Heading into Newark, NJ for the final road game of their 2024-2025 campaign, the Pittsburgh Penguins will look to upset a very fast, very playoffs-bound Devils team. Even without star forward Jack Hughes the Devils have yet again managed to punch their ticket to Lord Stanley’s fabled dance.

Our hearts go out to the family of former Penguins GM, the late Ray Shero. Rest In Peace, Ray.

Meaningful Hockey 04/07/25

The Pittsburgh Penguins have officially been eliminated from contention in the race to qualify for the 2024-2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. And with less than a handful of regular season games remaining on their schedule, the Penguins are at home tonight for the back half of a home-and-home matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Jeff and Jordan convene remotely for today’s episode - doing their very best to keep their respective spiritual trains on their metaphorical tracks - as we all get ready for another Penguins-less NHL postseason.

Future Marker: Our 250th Episode featuring The Athletic’s Josh Yohe 04/03/25

Dear Listeners,

It’s hard to believe we’ve made it to our 250th episode.

We’re joined today by The Athletic’s Josh Yohe, Pittsburgh Penguins beat reporter and one of our first proper guests. Josh is a fine example of someone who’s become a good friend and a generous collaborator in this unrivaled U.S. hockey town.

I started Fly Penguins Fly Podcast in the attic of the old Jersey City where I lived, along with my wife leading up to when we moved to Pittsburgh.

I still get a thrill out of creating and posting each episode, especially at this time when the Pittsburgh Penguins are rebuilding, in preparation for what - hopefully - will be an exciting, successful new era of hockey in the Steel City.

Thanks for listening, stay tuned as we continue to cover this hallowed franchise.

All my best,
Jeff Taylor

In short, a humbling final push to the big 250th episode, featuring Josh Yohe and coming at you tomorrow from the studio.

Disclaimer: The audio quality of the majority of this episode is pretty darned poor. Traveling for work meant no way to get into an isolated space, so Jeff recorded this one (literally) out in the streets of Jersey City.

Mr. Consistent: Sidney Crosby Grabs Gretzky’s NHL Point-Per-Game Record! 03/27/25

With an original working title of ‘Passenger Princess,’ production/release of this episode was delayed until close to the start of this evening’s road game versus the Sabres. And wouldn’t ya know it? Just as I sat down to knock out the edit and get this one posted, Sidney Crosby does what he does best: Contribute to his team’s offense.

It was a beautiful goal, featuring many of Crosby’s best attributes as an athlete and a teammate: On-ice awareness, positional intelligence, and a practiced ability to have quick hands, even from tough angles.

The puck ended up on Sid’s stick as he floated to the net front, and even though it was in-tight to his body, the captain managed to get a super-fast shot off, beating Billy Reimer high on the glove-side. Just incredible.

From us here at Fly Penguins Fly Podcast: Congratulations to Sidney Crosby on a monumental achievement, as he passes Wayne Gretzky to possess the longest-ever season streak of point-per-game play in the NHL.

Multiple references are made to The Office (American edition), plus you’ll get to know the four newest acquisitions made by Pittsburgh’s front office: Kolyachonok, Timmins, Dewar, and Novak.

Not mentioned on the podcast, but holy cow: Your admin had completely forgotten that Danton Heinen was a Penguin again! Ha.

Sidney Crosby Will Play with special guest Ashley Taylor 02/10/2510 févr. 202500:19:49

“Sidney Crosby Will Play” with special guest Ashley Taylor 02/09/25

It has been a MINUTE since Jeff’s wife, Ashley Taylor joined the podcast. With Jordan DeFigio taking a scheduled maintenance day away from the team, Ashley steps in to chat Penguins hockey, 4 Nations Face-off, Sidney Crosby, and Star Wars… sort of.

Sidney Crosby will, in fact play for Team Canada, despite aggravating one of his wrists in a SO loss to the NJ Devils last week. The hockey world rejoices that Crosby will don the handsome Team Canada sweater and participate in the tournament, but what contribution will he make to the team’s goal of coming out on top in the …sort of best-on-best competition? Don’t ask us, we’re mostly being goofy today.

In the midst of back to back weekend victories, the Pittsburgh Penguins made a big trade with the Vancouver Canucks. Gone are the Pittsburgh days of Sweden’s Marcus Pettersson and New Jersey’s Drew O’Connor, for henceforth they will both suit up in blue sweaters emblazoned with orcas.

Jeff and Jordan try to let it really sink in: The Penguins are in full-on rebuild mode, welcoming in as they have defenseman Vinny Desharnais and back-again forward Danton Heinen.

The Great Thaw 01/27/2527 janv. 202500:46:24

“The Great Thaw” 01/27/25

We’re not going to pull punches here, folks: The Pittsburgh Penguins are dismally bad at winning right now. They just can’t get over the hump most nights, particularly when they’re playing bottom-dwellers like the Ducks or Sharks. As the Pens head into the Shark Tank this evening for a 10:30pm puck drop against Macklin Celebrini and Co., it is this podcast’s opinion that (a Penguins fan) ought not get one’s hopes up.

The schedule over the next month is chalk-full of divisional games, versus teams the Pittsburgh Penguins haven’t necessarily fared too well agains. Frankly, in the interest of contending next season, this organization might do well to take the next 10-15 games as an ‘opportunity’ to climb in the draft lottery standings.

We close this episode out with a full discussion of Robert Eggers’s “Nosferatu,” a captivating new film that Jeff and Jordan took in, together, just last week. Warning, it’s definitely not a flic for the ultra-faint-of-heart.

After a great victory in Los Angeles, the Penguins head down to Anaheim for a showdown with the Ducks. Jordan and Jeff have plans to gorge themselves on some fresh Nosferatu tonight, so look forward to the review of THAT insane-looking Eggers flic, next time they record.

Jesse Marshall: The Cost Of Winning 01/16/25

The Pittsburgh Penguins yesterday placed franchise goalie Tristan Jarry on waivers, effectively banishing him to the American Hockey League on an indefinite basis.

We’re lucky enough to be joined today by The Athletic’s own Jesse Marshall. An experienced hockey writer for numerous outlets, Jesse is the co-creator of the Dying Alive podcast, as well as a regular contributor to McKeen’s Hockey. With elite hockey IQ - at least as a writer and a keen analyzer of game tape - it is the opinion of our producer and co-host Jeff Taylor, that it’s long past time Kyle Dubas hired Jesse in a hockey analytics role.

Diehard But Curious 01/13/2513 janv. 202500:40:43

Diehard But Curious 01/13/25

Sweet sleeping zambonis. The Pittsburgh Penguins underachieved at biblical levels over the past handful of games, save a predictably unexpected stomping of their perennial daddies, the Edmonton Oilers. In that game, Sidney Crosby put on an absolute SHOW of offense and playmaking, but every other game since last Tuesday’s loss to Columbus has been a let-down.

Once Jordan and Jeff recap the Pens’ aforementioned standings skid, your co-hosts take some time to figure out which non-Penguins team they’ll potentially root for heading into a Pittsburgh-less playoffs. Add to that some good-natured film reviews and a couple shoutouts, and you’ve got yourself a Monday afternoon hockey podcast, do… you… not.

Taking The Night Off 01/09/25

We’ve had it for now. At least until the back-to-back this weekend. Tuesday’s SO loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets positively broke Jeff’s brain. Jordan doesn’t seem too well-for-ware over it, herself. Your co-hosts had posted up at a South Hills gin mill for what they’d hoped would be a gratifying win over what Matt Vensel called “Border Rival” Columbus - alas, the story was all too familiar, with Jarry flailing to make even a single save in the shootout.

Enjoy this spirited catch-up and hockey chat. The Penguins are probably going to get their asses handed to them tonight when McDavid and the Oilers visit the Paint Can, but there’s more hockey this weekend, against far more ‘human’ teams. We’ll be back with you on Monday morning!

Back To The Grind 01/06/2506 janv. 202500:30:53

Back To The Grind 01/06/25

It was a weekend that saw the Pittsburgh Penguins visit the defending Stanley Cup Champions in Florida, then a team, in the Canes, who perennially gives the Pens fits - especially when the matchup happens on the road in Raleigh. On one hand, the song remained the same in that Pittsburgh put a great game on the ice against the Cats, essentially stealing a point against a first-class Florida lineup. On the other hand, the Penguins proceeded to do one of the things they do best: They blew (another) 2-goal lead against a divisional rival. After a great multi-goal first period in North Carolina, the Pens seemed to doze their way through the second frame and found themselves trailing after forty minutes. Another consolation point was salvaged, thanks to a late-game tally from Erik Karlsson, but neither players nor coach were left with a good taste in their mouths.

Jeff and Jordan preview a tough, tough week of upcoming matchups including the Columbus Blue Jackets (nearly tied with the Pens in the WC race) on Tuesday night, and the Edmonton Oilers (defending Western Conference Champs) on Thursday.

Before They Even Stop Crying 01/03/25

Coming out of Christmas break, the Pittsburgh Penguins dropped four of six points against vulnerable squads. The Pens’ schedule gets exceptionally tough starting tonight, when they visit the Cats of Sunrise, FL. Jeff is sucked up into an emotional twister by his first-ever experience with the story of “Wicked,” and Jordan would bring The Bus back to The Burgh if she could.

Sara Civian: Hating On Hate 12/23/24

Jeff Taylor and Jordan DeFigio are joined today by storied hockey writer and founder of The Civ Report,* Sara Civian! As a co-host of the Too Many Men Podcast, Civian has also reported for Bleacher Report and The Athletic.

Maybe it’s because the holidays are upon us, but few conversations we’ve shared with our guests have been quite as delightful as this one with Sara Civian. As is often the case on Fly Penguins Fly, our topics of conversation wound their way around some strange and hilarious bends in the road. See time codes below to customize your listening experience, or just buckle up and take in the full hour.

We deeply appreciate YOU, our listener. Fly Penguins Fly podcast is here to provide a safe space for you to unwind and hang out with us, to laugh at the ridiculous side of our great game and to ponder some of the weirder corners of the social media wastelands we all frequent.

In said spirit, we really feel that Sara brought some very cool insights and experiences to the table, recounting her own navigations of the unpredictable digital tundras, airport terminals, and aging hockey barns we all can’t help but love.

Hardly Best On Best 12/16/2417 déc. 202400:29:04

“Hardly Best On Best” 12/16/24

On the way to stealing a point from their loss to the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night, the Pittsburgh Penguins lost Marcus Pettersson to what has proven to be a week-to-week lower body injury. That’s not good, especially for a team who’ve just recently begun banking points en route to a possible wildcard berth.

Jeff’s gears have been ground. The culprit? The NHL’s decision not to include Russian players in a so-called ‘best-on-best’ tournament. Promoting an event as featuring the world’s most elite talent is far from genuine, when the odds-on favorite for Hart Trophy winner, Kirill Kaprizov is at home or on vacation. Alexander Ovechkin. Artemi Panarin. Igor Shesterkin. The list goes on, and none of them will be participating in what could otherwise have been a truly killer shindig.

“Defying Gravity” 12/12/24

Jeff and Jordan are back at it for this Thursday edition of Fly Penguins Fly podcast, and there’s plenty on tap. Songs from Wicked and Aladdin are on the menu, as well as long-held grudges against former GM’s who shall - if at all possible - not be named. The Penguins are in Montreal this evening to take on les Habitants, the childhood favorite team of both Sid Crosby and Kris Letang.
