Last time Missouri’s NHL franchise were in town, the Pens came from behind in a tough-fought victory over a team who did just about anything they could to get under Pittsburgh’s skin - literally - including a brawl that led to a bleeding cut on the bridge of 87’s nose. It wasn’t a good game plan for Berube’s Blues, though, as the Penguins emerged with a 5-3 comeback W and, in the words of Josh Getzoff, a “2-pt Party on 5th Ave.”

“Double Lucky” PIT@PHI 11/25/22

Malkin attempted to throw his game-winning stick, up over the protective glass and into the crowd not once, but twice as he celly’d his way up the halfwall to Dan Vladar’s left. The game finally over, Malkin’s 1001st NHL tilt tucked neatly under his belt, the W secured for Pittsburgh. In the cosmic sense, Evgeni Malkin has truly done it all: Three Stanley Cups, a Conn Smythe trophy, the Art Ross, the Ted Lindsay, and the Hart Memorial trophy. And there’s more, some of it perhaps yet to come. But right now, what Geno tells us he wants, more than anything, is another Stanley Cup with his Penguins. Tonight’s matchup against Philadelphia has all the makings of a Pittsburgh loss. The Flyers are on a losing streak they’d love more than anything to break, and they’ve got home ice and a nationally broadcast game as the setting for such an upset. Moreover, the Penguins are only-just-barely finding a team-wide balance, sitting as they are a single point out of the eastern conference playoff picture. Thanksgiving has come and gone, and many will tell you it’s time to sing or get off the stage, so to speak. Well, if Philadelphia is the stage, Pittsburgh has the performer best suited for it. Sidney Crosby has been going on a mega-tear of late, most recently earning the NHL’s 1st Star Of The Week honors. Philly is Crosby’s favorite point-scoring proving ground, historically, and so today’s Black Friday tilt holds more promise for 87 and his Penguins than many others might.

“1001: A Penguins Odyssey," or,  "A Conversation With Shane Taylor” CGY@PIT 11/23/22

Before the puck drops tonight, the Penguins will honor the 2009 Conn Smythe Trophy-winning, three time Stanley Cup Champion, Penguin-for-life Evgeni Malkin with a special ceremony. Although 71’s 1000th NHL game already came and went, a 5-3 victory for his team, on the road in Chicago, the hometown fans have something to give Geno: A tsunami of clapping, shouting, board-pounding, foot-stomping, and whistling to be precise. The applause will last, it will echo through the rafters of PPG Paints Arena for as long as the Penguins’ current barn stands, as long as there are ice hockey games played within its property lines. Malkin, who has played his entire career both in Pittsburgh and in the shadow of one of the Hockey-Rushmore caliber Sidney Crosby, is a treasure of this franchise, of this league, and of the sport of hockey. Cherish these, the last years of what has been a magnificent career for 71.

“Evgeni Malkin’s 1,000th NHL Game” PIT@CHI 11/20/22

Last night in Winnipeg, Tristan Jarry and the Pittsburgh Penguins played hard-and-smart for the FULL sixty minutes of regulation. They got rewarded, in the form of their very first shutout victory of the season. Following a historically bad losing streak, the Pens needed two things to come together in order for the team to feel stabilized. For one, they needed to play their game for the entirety of three periods. Then they were going to need their top goaltender to ratchet-strap the payload down to the bed of the bed of the pickup, chisel the ice off the tow hitch, and get back to work. Forget the recent 7 game losing streak, because when it comes to playing on the road in Chicago, the Penguins haven't won in that barn since 2009. So on the night Geno hits the 1.000-game mark, I'm hoping we see the Penguins throw that particular monkey off their back.

My head is full of music and actual bagels and pizza, as I play out-of-town gigs with my band in the states Garden and Empire. I’ll be home in the Burgh for Thanksgiving week, and so will the Penguins - kind of. First, though, they’ve got to get through Minnesota (tonight), Winnipeg, and Chicago, none of which sounds easy and each of which seem, after the past few weeks of miserable hockey played by the Pens, almost like a likely L for a team who simply can’t seem to find its game. We pray to the hockey gods tonight, for cohesion among a team stacked with talent, for a W, for …just about any damned thing.

“Blueger Set To Return?” TOR@PIT 11/15/22

Matt Murray. The very first thing that should come to mind, when a Penguins fan sees that name in print, is that he lifted the Pens to back-to-back Stanley Cups. Period, end of sentence. And tonight, “Muzz” is back on the Leafs’ active roster, set for a return to the ice at PPG Paints Arena. I, too, will make my return to the ice with last season’s beer league team, out here where I’m currently traveling for music gigs. I just happen to have my hockey bag and they just happen to have a game. My jersey number: 53. Now, is it pure coincidence that on this very night, Mr. Teddy Blueger (also #53, in case you were unaware) is himself set to make his own way back onto the Penguins’ active roster? I think not. If you’re buying a lottery ticket, placing sports bets tonight, etc… make sure the number fifty-three is in there somewhere. It should be a great game in snowy Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania tonight. Leafs at Pens, Reverse Retro Jerseys pulled over your Pengweenos, and one of them will say: BLUEGER.

It’s time to get one back from the team who handed the Penguins their first loss of the season. Tonight at le Centre Bell, Mike Sullivan’s waddling, flightless wonders will step onto the ice - for the first time today - around 6:30pm Eastern time. The Penguins did not hold a morning skate on this Saturday, the second half of a back to back. That’s become the norm for a team whose average age is higher than any other such cumulative figure in the NHL. I wonder who we’ll see in net tonight. There are rumblings of various explanations as to why we haven't seen Tristan Jarry in net, but suffice to say DeSmith has more than answered the bell. Speaking of Bells, will Casey go again tonight at Centre Bell?

“Mom and Grandma” PIT@TOR 11/11/22

Tonight, your Penguins pay the Toronto Maple Leafs a visit at Scotia Bank Arena in Ontario Province. The recent seven-game losing streak snapped in Washington just two nights ago, the Pens go back to goaler DeSmith, comma Casey, of Rochester, NH in an attempt to ride the momentum of whatever chemistry may have led to the team’s first victory - 4-1, over the Caps - in over two weeks. Felt longer than that, didn’t it? Sam Poulin is sent down to WBS, Mark Friedman is recalled but didn’t skate this morning. What seemed like it might be a wiping out of PIT’s D-Corps by a bruising Capitals team earlier this week …apparently wasn’t. All defenseman were present for today’s morning skate. Let’s hope the Penguins of Pittsburgh can keep a good thing going. And finally, a moment of silence in Remembrance of one Cheeks Klapanen, a healthy scratch again tonight as the Pens take on 42’s old team.

“The Banshees of Cranberry” PIT@WAS 11/09/22

Tonight, your Penguins visit the Washington Capitals for what is surely “just another” must-win game, because what game isn’t, when you’re in the midst of a historical, longest-in-the-Mike-Sullivan-era, epic-ass losing streak? Do I feel better? Yep, I do. Thanks for letting me try out some words. And now that I got that off my chest, exactly what *was it* were we talking about? Oh, right. The Caps. Yeah, they convincingly defeated the Edmonton Oilers a couple nights ago, even on a night when Connor McDavid did Connor McDavid things. 

So, do I expect the Penguins to go into the nation’s capital and defeat the team who sent EDM home with their tails between their legs? Nope. And don’t mistake my tone, here: I’m not giving up on these Penguins, not even for this season. Far from it. But to turn this ship around, while inserting into your lineup names like *Big Jeff Carter, Teddy Blueger, and Fillip Hallander, not to mention major D-pairing shuffling… Let’s just say I’d be happy with a game where the Pens play hard, leave it all out on the ice, and heck, I’ll even make a bit of a prediction here: Take home a loser’s point. That, to me, would be a step in the right direction. If, by hook or by crook the Penguins can eek out the W you won’t hear me complain. Longest episode notes ever? Check. My first - if inadvertent - stab at ‘writing a teeny tiny piece’ on this team, in 103 episodes? Yup. That, too.

Late on Monday morning, the Pittsburgh Penguins took the ice at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry, PA. Your oh-so-intrepid co-host, Jeff Taylor was on location.

In addition to chatting with The Athletic’s Rob Rossi, Jeff of course gathered the sounds of NHL regulars working a struggling power play unit. But it isn’t the professional athletes who are the stars of today’s epsiode…

On this installment of Fly Penguins Fly, you’ll meet Meghan Crawford from C.A.R.E.S. of Western PA, as well as young Ethan Domingues, an up and coming goalie from Connecticut. Jeff also shares a bit of “play-by-play” from Penguins practice - if we dare call it that - as Allegheny County’s NHL hockey club prepared for this evening’s home ice showdown with the Arizona Coyotes.

Connor McDavid and company ran the Boys-from-the-Burgh straight outta Rogers Place last night, scoring four goals against PIT in the 2nd frame alone, and outshooting the Pens 26-4 in the process - just in that one period. Yeah. And so, heading into tonight’s matchup with Calgary, there’s surely some tightening up and re-committing to be done in the minds and practice of the Penguins.

I was at MSG for Game 5: It was BONKERS being there in person. Obviously the result wasn't what we Penguins fans were looking for, but regardless it was a true rush getting to be inside the world's most famous arena for such a consequential night of Penguins hockey. In this emergency episode, I briefly express my mini-rage about the non-call on Trouba's elbow to Crosby's head, plus I sit in and briefly chat with Josh Getzoff (play-by-play voice , Penguins Radio Network), as well as  Mike DeFabo and Matt Vensel (Penguins beat writers, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette).

Just a little bonus content for ya in this haze of playoff madness we find ourselves in!

Jordan has identified an individual who, theoretically, could end up being the Mule tasked with collect Jeff’s rightful Sidney Crosby bobblehead. More on this soon.

Tonight in Tampa Bay, your Penguins make their second visit to Amelie Arena in less than a week. The Pittsburgh team hopes to recreate some of the winning magic that sent them home victorious last time - though likely WITHOUT the help of a goalie goal, as scored by Tristan Jarry in their previous matchup.

This is simply a fun episode, something to enjoy between periods, after the game, or throughout the week as the holiday season rolls on.
