The Historical Narrative of Horse Meat Recipes & Cuisine in Italy:
When it comes to culinary customs, the journey across different cultures often presents moments of profound divergence. These encounters with unfamiliar foods can evoke a sense of cultural shock, prompting reflections on the intricate relationship between food and society.
Horse meat holds a unique place in the culinary landscape of Italy, where it is revered as a wholesome and nourishing delicacy, positioned somewhere between the flavors of beef and venison.
Horse meat is often recommended for the young and infirm, believed to possess numerous health benefits due to its lean protein content and rich iron levels.
You may be surprised to learn that some well-known multinationals have Italian baby food subsidiaries that have embraced the tradition of horse meat in their product lines: Mellini (a Danone subsidiary) and Plasmon, a subsidiary of the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based H. J. Heinz Company. Their products include purees and ready-to-eat meals, and cater to parents seeking nutritious and culturally relevant options for their infants.
This is a fascinating, eye-opening podcast episode with @mangiawithmichele and....you just might learn a few recipes! (Don't worry...you can also make them with beef!)

Lucca, the Jewel of Tuscany23 janv. 202400:26:06

Blogger couple Ilene and Gary Modica of Our Italian Journey share why they chose Lucca in Tuscany for their retirement home almost from the moment they entered this charming walled city.
Lucca is a city on the Serchio river in Italy’s Tuscany region. It’s known for the well-preserved Renaissance walls encircling its historic city center and its cobblestone streets. Broad, tree-lined pathways along the tops of these massive 16th- and 17th-century ramparts are popular for strolling and cycling. Casa di Puccini, where the great opera composer was born, is now a house museum. - Google
Food writer Mark Bittman says Lucca's "food is among Italy's most compelling -- almost certainly the best in Tuscany -- and the town is a draw in its own right. Enclosed by walls whose broad tops look out over the town's lovely towers and broad, calm piazzas on one side and park grounds on the other..."
Lucca has everything within its walls: art, music, cycling, food, festivals...plus it's easy to get here!

All Things Move: Learning to Look in the Sistine Chapel "tells the story of Marshall’s relationship with one of our most cherished artworks. Interwoven with the history of its making and the Rome of today, it’s an exploration of the past in the present, the street in the museum, and the way a work of art can both terrify and alchemize the soul. An impassioned defense of the role of art in a fractured age, All Things Move is a quietly sublime meditation on how our lives can be changed by art, if only we learn to look."

Piedmont Wines and Wineries - Episode 17107 nov. 202300:51:48

Last week we took a deep dive into Piedmont and its luscious food and wine, closing our visit at the 500 year-old Tenuta Carretta for lunch. The Tenuta has several restaurants - one a Michelin star restaurant - great accommodation, and wines.
Piedmont wines are world-renowned and this remarkable wine region produces more DOCG wines than any other Italian region. It also ranks sixth among the Italian regions in annual production volume. Piedmont produces all kinds of wines from sparkling whites, to rosés to red wines.
Perhaps the best known wine in the region is Barolo. As it turns out Barolo is not a kind of wine or a grape varietal, but rather the name of a town where luscious Barolo red wine is produced from the Nebbiolo grape. If your pocket won’t allow you to drink Barolo wine regularly then consider some of the other wonderful wines produced using this grape.

Villa Taverna & Palazzo Taverna, two Roman jewels - Episode 16708 oct. 202300:23:26

The fifteenth century Villa Taverna, commissioned by Cardinal Consalvi. Beginning in 1933, the U.S. Embassy rented the Villa from Taverna’s daughter. During World War II the property managed to avoid destruction by serving as a convalescent home for the Italian military. Returned to the U.S. Government in 1944, the Villa and gardens were purchased in 1948 from Princess Ida Borromeo-Taverna. Throughout the 1800s Roman nobility escaped the summer city heat here. In 1824 Pope Leo XII opened the Papal Seminary College, and for the next one hundred years, many illustrious scholars frequented the well-known center of learning.
Palazzo Taverna is a palace in Rome, located on the Via di Monte Giordano and first built under orders of Cardinal Giordano Orsini, who wished to turn his ancient castle on the Monte Giordano into a residence. The Palazzo passed to the Gabrielli family in 1688 and they used it to host members of the Bonaparte family such as Eugénie de Montijo. In 1888 it passed to the Taverna family.

Villa Taverna & Palazzo Taverna, two magnificent historic Rome properties - Episode 16706 oct. 202300:23:26

The fifteenth century Villa Taverna, commissioned by Cardinal Consalvi, was first rented by the U.S. Embassy in 1933.  The Villa and its historical gardens are filled with valuable art from antiquity through the Renaissance, to the nineteenth century.
The Villa and gardens were purchased by the U.S. Embassy in 1948 from Princess Ida Borromeo-Taverna. The Villa has since served as the residence for 19 American ambassadors, and is protected by Italian law for cultural heritage.
This property is huge: one city block or 7000 m². It's filled with spectacular hand-painted ceramic pavement from Vietri and magnificent gardens. You can only visit the Villa if you have the good fortune to be a guest at the Villa Taverna ambassadorial residence, which we were last week.

Villa Taverna is not to be confused with Palazzo Taverna, also magnificent and not only visitable, but this exquisite Palazzo occasionally has a few outstanding apartments for rent.

Have a listen to learn about both of these unique and historic Rome properties.

Italian: its dialects, history, quirks...and learning to speak it! - Episode 16516 sept. 202300:23:55

If you think Italian has been around forever, you'd be wrong: up until 1871 when the Kingdom of Italy was formed, the Italian peninsula consisted of multiple independent city states...and lots of local dialects!
And each and every city state was strongly influenced by diverse cultures that impacted each area culturally.
Think northern Europe, the Arab influence, trade going through Venice. Each and every one of these impacted the Italian language, its history and the creation of its many dialects.
This episode delves into some of the quirks of the Italian language, the dialects and the rich history of Italian.
And then, of course, some anecdotes and stories and tips on learning Italian.
Tomorrow, along with Italian with Davide, I'm running a free live class on learning the Italian language with a special focus on food and drink at 6 PM Italian time, noon EST, and 9 AM PST.

See you tomorrow!

What Italian Kids Eat - the unfiltered lowdown from two local Italian experts… age 4 and 8 - Episode 16404 sept. 202300:28:24

No better way to understand What Italian Kids Eat than speaking to two local Italian experts… age 4 and 8!
My podcast guests today are a charming four-year-old girl, and an equally charming eight-year-old boy both born and raised in Rome, Italy.
They give us the lowdown on what kids eat from breakfast to lunch to dinner, snack time (merenda), and what they eat when out at a restaurant.
Riccardo and Sofia tell us all about what can't be missed at any and every Italian lunch, plus the special things kids eat when they're out at a restaurant.
No Kids Menu here in Italy: kids order from an adult menu and mostly adult dishes, including Riccardo's current favorite, spaghetti with clam sauce.
Do kids drink wine with their meal? No, but a few sips here and there are made available to all kids and because it's not forbidden most kids taste it and decide it's not for them and choose either water or a special out-to-dinner treat that's a kids favorite worldwide – Coca-Cola.
Listen in for a fun and thoroughly charming episode that's also full of fascinating cultural information on Italian culinary tradition for children.
