| Episode 349: Building a Studio Worth Buying (with Mitch McGinley) | 30 Jul 2026 | 00:42:57 | |
What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "The important thing for everyone to know is that at some point you will exit your business, it has to happen no matter what. You might as well do it on your own terms and take care of your staff and take care of your community." [10:34] "If you don't have a clear differentiator your business is going to be kind of tough to sell, [be]cause no matter who the buyer is, they want to understand what the competitive advantages of your business are." [12:05] "Every buyer wants the manager to stay. Every buyer wants the teachers to stay. They don't want to come in and mix things up, they want to come in and trust the money is going to keep coming in the way it has been." | Episode 348: Advanced Identity Alignment Q&A | 23 Jul 2026 | 00:31:23
What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "Sometimes the profitable thing is genuinely off-brand, and it is slowly eroding the studio, the members it brings, aren't your people." [Nick, 8:29] "Seeming successful and being successful are totally different. Outside looking in, I might have a killer studio, I have the prettiest marketing, I have the most beautiful space, my class is seemingly full, and you know what I am struggling and in debt." [Megan, 15:04] "AI is an amplifier; it's helping us do more work than we have ever done before. The faster you get this work done the faster the AI can get to work for you." [Nick, 21:55] "The goal is never to build a business that looks like everyone else's, the goal is to build a business that is intentionally aligned with who you are, who you serve and the transformation you want to create." | Episode 339: Your Pricing Menu Is Killing Retention | 21 May 2026 | 00:28:11
What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "Retention starts at the point of sale. Not after right. How can you retain them if they don't stay on a routine?" [Nick, 5:04] "I think people say the word 'expensive', but I think what they really mean is they don't feel like they got the value, and it's like, the value tracks." [Nick, 20:31] If your structure allows clients to stay inconsistent, they will. If it guides them into routine…nothing's guaranteed, but they're far more likely to stay, see results and become long-term members." [Seran, 15:01] "You want to make sure that you're not looking around you when you're trying to craft your marketing message too much, and that is another mistake that I see people making, is that they're pulling from other people." [Seran, 20:41] "What I want for you as a studio owner is I want your studio to stand out, which means I don't want you to look like everyone else in town. | Episode 247: Cancellation Policy Q&A | 30 May 2024 | 00:25:28
What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "Someone might not make it, they might be in traffic and all of that kind of stuff, but you're trying to reduce the default behavior of people flaking [out]. It's going to be emergencies and those are going to happen less often." [6:46] "If you make the fee so minimal, you're going to make a little bit of money off of it, but in the end you might lose a member who just continuously cancels and doesn't think twice and then eventually cancels their membership." [16:20] "Cancellation policies, in my opinion, are not 'set it and forget it' kinds of things. They are something that you should be continuously reviewing, resetting and adjusting in order to ensure that your business is running smoothly. So you should be monitoring your cancellation policy and its impact." [23:36]

| Episode 243: Maximize Studio Membership Value with fitDEGREE's Early Access Tags | 02 May 2024 | 00:19:25 | |
What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "We were worried it might have gotten a little bit swept under the rug because spot booking was our big fancy flashy guy, but early access tags are really impactful for you and your business." [Megan, 7:25] "The reason the future really stuck out to me was we were also hearing over the months that we need to make memberships more valuable on the platform. What's the point of a client being on an autopay membership other than price?" [Nick, 9:05] "This feature was built for studios that have classes with waitlists in mind, so if you do not have a registration window on your classes and you just leave it as always open, tighten it up and put this perk on your membership." | Episode 242: Protecting Your Website – The Three Must-Have Documents featuring Lisa Fraley | 25 Apr 2024 | 00:29:59
What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "I realize people want to make their clients feel comfortable and you do need to protect yourself and have clear boundaries and clear legal policies, but you don't have to make them harsh or cold, negative or uncomfortable, because it's already uncomfortable enough as it is." [Lisa, 8:06] "The idea is you want to get clear about creating your boundaries and clear about who you are and what you do and what you don't do, so that people can't come back and take the information on your website and come after you." [13:00] "When you put all the time and money into opening a studio, you want to do everything you possibly can to make it safe and protected so that no one can come and take it away from you or sue you." | Episode 241: Using Spot Booking to Enhance the Client Experience, Social Connections (and More) | 18 Apr 2024 | 00:24:47
What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "Clients have preferences on the piece of equipment that they use and where that equipment is located. Sometimes they follow a specific bike around the studio or a specific Pilates reformer around the studio, or sometimes they just like to be in the front row ori in the back row." [Nick, 4:54] "We already had this feature where clients could see what classes their friends are signed up for, but now they can actually see where their friends are sitting. So if they were to look at a map, they'll see the instructor's face where they'll be, they'll see spots that are taken by people that are not their friends, and they'll see spots that are taken by their friends " [Nick, 6:12] "From the community aspect, it really amplifies the friends feature that we have and gives the friend connections more ammunition than it had before." What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "Sometimes it depends on the type of fitness instruction that you're doing, but you want to make sure that your event waiver or your liability waiver is covering multiple approaches." [Lisa, 10:22] "Legal documents are not meant to be short and sweet, because first of all, they could be lacking key points, and second of all, anything that you saw in law has to be spelled out." [Lisa, 16:23] "Something could still go wrong. If something goes wrong, then you want to have insurance on the back end, just like you do for your house, your car, your health and other things in your life." [Lisa, 19:23]

What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "Are you getting more followers? Are you getting more engagement? Are you getting more visits to your website? Are you getting new clientele in the door? Sales can be held very accountable to, based on the people that came in the door, what happened?" [Nick, 7:49] "[For] everyone that buys an intro offer at your studio, when they come in and you start understanding their needs, [ask] if this is someone your studio was meant to serve. If so, you better get them to convert." [Nick, 10:51] "In my mind as someone who's been a consumer of boutique fitness for a long time, a good salesperson feels like an accountability buddy. | Episode 237: A Deep Dive into the fitDEGREE Summit | 21 Mar 2024 | 00:26:56
What We Cover In This Episode:
"You can come with a list of questions, because my dream is for you to be able to come prepared, do the homework there, and go home feeling like you are set for success." [Megan, 11:14] "One thing about it being small, is that it has the opportunity to be interactive. It's not going to be a one-way lecture where I don't care who is in the audience, I prepared something and that is what we are talking about. It has the opportunity to be interactive where we can hear where you're at and solve those problems." [Nick, 18:57] "One of my big goals is to make sure that we are not like other summits and conferences, when you're walking in and have no idea what you're about to encounter. What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "LenzVU helps the studios understand what brought them to the studio and also engages them through targeted marketing, which would be more appealing than just [saying], 'Here are 5 ways to take classes at the studio." [Afi, 4:05] "It's crucial for a studio to grasp specific needs and the decision-making factors of their clients." [Afi, 10:15] "That's what target marketing is about, engaging clients with information that is aligned with their needs, rather than sending all the information and expecting them to be enticed by a piece of information that satisfies their needs." [Afi, 12:31] "The power that LenzVu brings to the table is that it natively allows for the studios to engage the clients to find out their needs or interests." [15:15]

Quotes: "They just have so much all around. There's the lake, there's things to do all across the resort itself, there's things all around the resort, [such as] walking paths. [13:44] "One thing that I have noticed working in this industry for the past five or six years now is that the modalities, the offerings, and the delivery of fitness and wellness is the unique part, but outside of that it is a very standard business model that should be followed." [14:20] "You should always be working in a way to develop the best business practices and create that playbook of, if I were to sell it or if I were to go away for a month, I can give someone the playbook and they can run my business." What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "The best grassroots marketing technique gets people achieving results and talking about the experience." [Nicole, 3:27] "Some of the things that we have done at my studio, and that we continue to do, are partnerships with businesses we would consider to be aligned with ours. We share a target market, we are physically located in the same geographic area; it makes sense to help each other out." [Nicole, 16:30] "I think it's really important to make sure that you are not forgetting about your members when they sign on the dotted line. We bring them in and convert them to membership and then a lot of studios that I see just kind of chop it off right there. There is no real thought about nurturing that relationship moving forward." | Episode 233: Using Social Gamification to Boost Your Fitness Studio's Community and Retention | 22 Feb 2024 | 00:23:04
What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "By showcasing client achievements and progress, you are encouraging a healthy competitive spirit and also fostering connections amongst members. This social aspect of gamification not only motivates clients to push themselves, but creates a supportive environment that celebrates everyone's victories." [Megan, 6:41] "It's really just what you put into it and how you instill it into your community, because you are in control of how the leaderboard gamifies and comes into that community. So you can make it toxic, or you can make it a fruitful endeavor." [Megan, 7:24] "Throw a wrench in your plans or introduce something that you didn't think you had to introduce I think is just a way to liven up your studio, increase your retention rates, and then improve your new client intro offer." What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "There's a thing with us heart-led entrepreneurs, where we feel really uncomfortable talking about money, asking for money, raising prices, often to our detriment." [Nicole, 8:47] "Only 15 percent of the population has ever even set foot inside of a boutique fitness studio, which means 85 percent of the general public out there has no idea what we do or how we do it." [Nicole, 16:59] "You never know, at some point in the next three months their pain might get so profound that they feel the need to take action with us, and we're right at top of their mind because we've been staying steady in their inbox for three straight months; so it's also a long game." | Announcing a Schedule Change | 01 Feb 2024 | 00:00:51
Hey fitFam and welcome back to another episode of fitSpot Guru! Well, not so fast. As you may have noticed by the length of today's episode, it's not an actual episode. I am here to make an announcement on some upcoming changes that fitSpot Guru will be undergoing starting in February. In an effort to keep our content fresh, fun, and educational, we are reducing the number of episodes we release per week. Moving forward, the format of the podcast will still bounce between fitDEGREE partner powered podcasts and fitDEGREE team episodes. We will just do so on a weekly rotating basis! So to conclude, you can expect new fitSpot Guru episodes to drop every Thursday rotating between riffs with my co-host Nick and I along with the partner powered podcasts you've all come to enjoy. Talk to you next week!

What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "The more niche you get, [with] essential oils, CBD [and] things like that, it's almost like you also need to have a workshop attached to it. You need to make a full effort with it, where if you just have a Stanley water bottle, that thing is going to fly off the shelf." [Nick, 7:56] "In my opinion these days, if you're online, you should be online. If you're in-person, you should be in-person. I understand [that] during the pandemic we had to diversity in that way, but now you're creating so much to manage that if you don't have separate teams for those, one is going to fall off the wayside." [Megan, 11:45] "I do think that we have shifted to a lot more of a healthy mindset when it comes to working out and health and wellness. | Episode 336: The Retention Problems Studio Owners Don't Expect | 30 Apr 2026 | 00:22:58
What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "The first 30 days are where habits form. If a new member doesn't establish a consistent attendance pattern early, the likelihood of long-term retention drops significantly." [Nick, 6:17] "Retention is less about how much someone likes the workout and more about whether it becomes a part of their lifestyle. So, studios that build strong attendance habits tend to see stronger retention." [Nick, 10:22] "So just know that if you're not building that community, if you are not making attempts at proper retention and proper feel-good vibes when you are in the studio, especially if you don't have that much competition, when [the time] comes and it will come, they are out like I was." Then [make sure] all the automations, the emails, just everything goes as it's supposed to." [Michael, 14:29] "As owners, we have to really really focus on making sure that it is the best it can be, and that's all you have. Basically a studio comes out of thin air, and we create this studio out of putting people and names of classes together." [Micheal, 15:06] "Studio owners come to me frazzled, trying to do everything, but when you put systems in place and you put people in place for the areas that you hate doing, it allows you to work on your superpowers." | Episode 218: Hot Topics and Social Media Trends Collide | 19 Dec 2023 | 00:29:25
What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "Your social media is like your own personal marketing suite. You make it all about where you are teaching today, what you are teaching today and how excited you are for that, which apparently means you're going to make everyone else hurt." [Megan, 8:33] "The playlist has to be fire, and there is nothing better than a compliment from a client saying they really loved the playlist today. You might as well have just written me a love letter." [Megan, 13:35] "If I had to be there at 5 am, I would be up at 3 am doing my routine. So I can absolutely relate to that, [but] I just couldn't imagine teaching a 5 am class." [Nick, 20:31] "Admit that it's a vulnerable spot for you as well, but that you're trying to get better. | Episode 217: Industry Tea with Partner Michael Jay - Buying a Studio | 14 Dec 2023 | 00:44:26
What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "One of the best pieces of advice that I can give people, we call it planting seeds, is just putting those little nuggets out to the universe and see what comes back to you one day. Whether you are a buyer or a seller, any time that you see an opportunity that you think you would be interested in, it is worth just saying it out loud to give it some life." [Mitch, 10:31] "if the business revolves around the owner it is not set up for success. It has to have those policies, procedures and handbooks. It can't have that one teacher who teaches an unhealthy majority of the classes, where if that one teacher left, half the clients would leave with them." [Mitch, 25:18] "Remember that fitness businesses are not just a financial investment, it is, but it is a commitment to building community. You want to build and nurture this community, because that's where the real value is." [Michael, 40:52]

| Episode 216: Mental Health and Boutique Fitness | 12 Dec 2023 | 00:22:32 | |
What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "I think if you can get your client base kinesthetically aware of how they feel, it does start to tap into that a little bit more authentically. If you're diving into mental health, that's where it might come off as inauthentic and you need to bring a professional in." [Nick, 11:03] "I think a lot of making wellness a lifestyle approach too is changing your mindset. A lot of people are short-term thinkers [wanting] instant gratification. I don't even think it's a social media thing, I think it's always been there. It's just there's more avenues to get that immediate gratification for people." [Nick, 12:59] "You don't have to partner with mental health professionals. You don't have to do these things with your clients, like goal setting seminars, ceremonies, check-ins, whatever you want to call them. You don't have to do any of that; your job is to bring them the physical and mental clarity through the services you provide." [Michael, 4:53] "Every single studio, whether they're existing or brand-new, needs to have, mission, vision and values, and get the team involved in that." [Michael, 13:16] "It's making sure you're in that sweet space, it's in your comfort zone but that you can make money off of it. What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "Standardization is a big fun factor for maintenance, growth, all of the things. The more you can standardize and create regular practices with yourself, your staff and your clients, the better off you're going to be." [Megan, 8:01] "It's very much a good idea to talk to your clients to connect with your clients, to connect with your clients and prescribe within the boundaries of your business what you can do for them." Quotes: "I found out very quickly that life is too short to not eat those enjoyable foods during the holiday season and I don't think anyone ever put on 20 pounds of weight from a couple days of bad eating." [Nick, 5:19] "I think it's more realistic to have conversations with your clients on how to enjoy their holidays than how to restrict themselves during it, or how to make it a very scary thing." [Megan, 6:33] "I think just helping people start routines or get back on their routine to start the new year, to me is the most important thing. I intentionally let go of my routine as soon as Thanksgiving hits, because I'm not going to be in control and I'm just going to stress myself out" [Nick, 9:33] "It's just kind of finding a way to meet everyone in the middle during these times of year, [such as] summer and holiday seasons. Quotes: "It's kind of become part of our routine as customers to get feedback, but what we really like to do is to work with our partners to identify where users are in their customer journey and make sure we are asking appropriate questions." [Steve, 3:47] "We really want these surveys to be kind of surgical opportunities to learn from specific member types, sell to the specific member types, and learn and improve quality control from an instructor perspective." [Steve, 19:46] "Really make sure that there is an avenue for partners to provide feedback, it really is a critical first step to kind of help better understand your user experience, better understand your quality control and really make sure that you're listening to your customers and letting them know that you value the input that they give you." | Episode 335: Shiny Object Syndrome Is Expensive | 23 Apr 2026 | 00:30:30
What We Cover In This Episode:
Quotes: "If your attention is soft, it's easy to think the answer is a new modality. If sales are slow, it is easy to think that the answer is a competitor's pricing. If operations feel messy it's easy to think the answer is new software." [Nick, 9:16] "Competitor-based pricing can be useful as a reference, but it becomes dangerous when you let another business dictate your value, your margins, and your model." [14:25] "If your pricing is confusing, a corporate perk will not fix that. So, shiny objects usually feel attractive because they let you work around the core issue instead of solving it."
