Ep113: How Doctors Can Access Fair Loans and Build Successful Practices: Financial Freedom with Doc2Doc CEO Dr. Zwade Marshall21 Nov 202500:38:19

In today's episode, Dr. Disha Spath sits down with Dr. Zwade Marshall—Emory- and Harvard-trained anesthesiologist, interventional pain specialist, CMO of Regenerative Spine and Pain Specialists, and co-founder/CEO of Doc2Doc Lending, a lending platform built by doctors for doctors.

Dr. Marshall shares the real story behind why traditional banks misunderstand early-career physicians, how his own relocation struggle sparked Doc2Doc, and how their proprietary underwriting finally evaluates doctors based on potential, not current cash flow.

Whether you're an early-career doctor trying to get approved for a loan, or an experienced physician thinking about launching your own practice, this episode is full of practical, real-world financial advice that medical training never covered.

Key Topics Covered:

1. Why traditional banks undervalue physicians

  • How big student loans and low early income distort our financial picture and why banks overlook our recession-proof earning potential.

2. How Doc2Doc Lending was born

  • The moment Dr. Marshall realized the system was broken and how he built a lending model that evaluates physicians prospectively, not punitively.

3. What makes Doc2Doc underwriting different

  • NPI verification, training stage, specialty, geography, cash-flow behaviors, and machine-learning insights that actually reflect physician realities.

4. When using leverage makes sense

  • Why personal loans can be powerful tools for practice start-up costs, fix-and-flips, or bridging SBA delays and why they shouldn't be used for consumption.

5. Understanding loan types, rates, and flexibility

  • How Doc2Doc's unsecured personal loans work, the monthly rate model, no-prepayment-penalty structure, and common use cases among physicians.

6. Credit scores, shame, and starting from scratch

  • A discussion especially relevant for immigrants and young physicians with thin credit files plus why your early FICO score doesn't define your financial future.

Listener Takeaways:

  • How Doc2Doc evaluates doctors differently than banks
  • Why physicians are statistically low-risk borrowers (even with $300K+ in loans)
  • What new attendings need to know about credit scores, debt, and loan approvals
  • Accessing fair and fast personal loans as a resident, fellow, or new attending
  • How physicians can use lending to start a medical practice
  • The most common mistakes new practice owners make and how to avoid them
  • Why private practice and cash-based care models are creating new physician freedom

Ep5: Financial Baby Step 3 for Physicians23 Jun 202300:34:06

Special thanks to our Title Sponsor, PearsonRavitz – Safeguarding the futures of physicians with disability insurance.

—----

Building upon her last episode where she covers Baby Step 1: Protect and Baby Step 2: Starter Emergency Fund, Dr. Disha offers her insight on Baby Step 3:  Start Investing and Game Plan Student Loans in episode 5.

Managing student loan debt, investing for the future, and building an emergency fund are critical to achieving financial freedom. Dr. Disha emphasizes the importance of starting to invest early to take advantage of compound interest. This powerful mathematical money strategy involves earning interest, adding to the principal, and earning even more interest the next month and so on.

Furthermore, Dr. Disha provides examples of how investing $2,000 per month for 35 years with an average of 5% interest can result in over $2 million with compounding interest, compared to only $882,000 with simple interest. She notes that compounding takes time to reach a critical mass for exponential growth and that medical professionals may have lost a decade of investing compared to their non-medical peers due to being in training.

This episode encourages listeners to use a compound interest calculator to see the potential impact of investing early and highlights the power of saving and investing to exponentially change one's life.

—----

Dr. Disha talks about the first baby step for physicians, which is to protect their loved ones with insurance.

Dr. Disha shares a personal story about how she learned the importance of this step the hard way. Her father struggled with mental illness and took his own life at the young age of 35. With little life insurance and savings, Dr. Disha and her family had to start over with very little when they moved to the United States. This experience made her realize the importance of acquiring appropriate insurances and making an estate plan.

The first thing anyone should do when thinking about wealth building is to extend an umbrella of protection over their loved ones. It's easy to get caught up in wealth building, but the first step should be to acquire appropriate insurances and make an estate plan. Life insurance is critical if someone has dependents. Everyone should have enough life insurance to ensure a stable future for their spouse and children in case of their demise.

Highlights and Key Takeaways:

  • Defining Purpose

    • Dr. Grumet introduces the concept of "big P" purpose—often associated with society's grand expectations, like achieving massive goals and material success—which can lead to disappointment and anxiety.

    • Contrastingly, "little p" purpose emphasizes finding joy in everyday processes, focusing on personal agency, and cultivating happiness through meaningful, small actions.

  • The Paradox of Purpose and Anxiety

    • Studies show that while having a purpose is linked to longevity and happiness, up to 91% of people experience "purpose anxiety" at some point. Dr. Grumet discusses how societal pressures shape unrealistic expectations, creating a disconnect between achievable happiness and purpose.

  • The Role of Purpose in Financial Independence (FI)

    • Dr. Grumet reflects on the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement and how a rush toward financial goals can lead to dissatisfaction. He emphasizes that finances should support a purpose-driven life rather than serve as the ultimate goal.

  • Building a Purposeful Financial Framework

    • Dr. Grumet advises on the importance of aligning financial goals with purpose, allowing money to act as a tool that supports one's personal "purpose anchors." Examples include pursuing passions alongside work and taking a "slow-FIRE" approach to financial freedom.

  • Exploring Regrets and Legacy

    • Dr. Grumet shares stories from his work in hospice, revealing how end-of-life reflections often center on missed opportunities for joy rather than financial accomplishments. He encourages listeners to identify and act on their unique purpose anchors, ensuring a legacy of personal impact rather than material wealth.

  • Practical Exercises for Identifying Purpose Anchors

    • Dr. Grumet offers practical advice on exploring and building purpose anchors, including exercises from The Purpose Code that help readers focus on the values and activities that bring them true joy.

  • Final Thoughts on Purpose and Happiness

    • Dr. Grumet concludes with a reminder that purpose should be abundant and anxiety-free. By focusing on what truly matters in life, we can find happiness in both the journey and the outcomes.
