196 | How To Create A Budget That Works For Your Family And Actually Stick To It10 Jan 202400:21:07

Snag Our Simplified Budget System!

Today's episode dives into creating and sticking to a budget that is tailored to your family's unique lifestyle, goals and schedule. We debunk the myth of one-size-fits-all budgeting strategies and offer a comprehensive guide for your family's unique needs and lifestyles. Plus, we share the secret to making budgeting easier and more effective so you can actually stick to it.

Key Points Discussed:

  1. Budgeting is Not One-Size-Fits-All: Every family is unique, and so should be their budget. Generic templates often fail because they don't consider individual family needs and habits.

  2. Our Signature Budget System: We've designed a budget template that's comprehensive yet simple, including a paycheck plan and a checklist for payday. The system is complemented by a course that guides you through the process.

  3. Conduct a 90-Day Review: A crucial step is to review your past three months' expenses. This helps in understanding your spending patterns and setting a realistic budget.

  4. Five Essential Budget Categories: Our system breaks down your budget into five key areas - Income, Debt, Bills, Spending, and Savings. Each category is tailored to reflect your unique lifestyle and goals.

  5. Involving the Family: Budgeting should be a family affair. Discuss with family members to understand their needs and upcoming expenses, such as school trips or sports activities.

  6. Adapting to Different Pay Schedules: Your budget should align with how you get paid, whether it's weekly, bi-weekly, or through bonuses. Tailor your budget to fit your income schedule.

  7. Setting Goals and Staying Motivated: Having clear financial goals is crucial for sticking to a budget. Visualize your goals to stay focused and avoid impulsive spending.

  8. Practical Tips to Stick to Your Budget: Use tools like cash envelopes for accountability, set reminders for budgeting tasks, and separate your money into different accounts for different purposes.

Budgeting doesn't have to be a chore. With the right system and approach, tailored to your family's needs, it can be an empowering and rewarding process.

183 | Budgeting vs. Accounting: Taking Control of Your Finances11 Dec 202300:14:33

Snag Our Simplified Budget System!

Hey there, listeners! 🎧 In today's episode, we're diving into a topic that's crucial for your financial health: understanding the difference between accounting and budgeting.

🔍 What's the Deal with Accounting and Budgeting?

- Accounting: It's all about looking back. Think of it as your financial rearview mirror, showing you where your money went. But here's the thing, it's past tense. It's great for business, taxes, and getting a snapshot of what happened.

- Budgeting: This is your financial roadmap! It's future-focused, helping you plan every dollar before you spend it. Budgeting is about setting goals, avoiding debt, and making your money work for you.

🌟 Why Budgeting Rocks:

- Take Charge: With budgeting, you're in the driver's seat. You decide where your money goes, from the first to the last dollar.

- Goal Setting: Whether it's paying off a card or saving for a vacation, budgeting makes these dreams achievable.

- Avoid Debt: Budgeting helps you plan for big expenses and avoid the debt trap.

- Peace of Mind: Knowing exactly what you have for groceries, fun, or savings reduces stress and chaos.

🤔 Why Bother with Accounting?

- While we love budgeting, accounting has its place too! It's essential for business operations, tax purposes, and reflecting on your spending habits to make better future budgets.

🎯 Taking Action:

- Get Organized: Use tools like our Signature Budget Template to track your assets, debts, and future budgets.

- Reflect and Adjust: At month-end, compare your budget with actual spending to fine-tune your next month's plan.

- Set and Review Goals: Regularly check your progress towards your financial goals.

Budgeting isn't just about numbers; it's about empowering you to take control of your financial future. Remember, it's not just theory; it's about real-life changes that make a difference. So, grab that budget template and start your journey to financial clarity!

181 | How This Special Ed Teacher Ditched Impulse Spending, Afforded Daycare & Paid Off Debt06 Dec 202300:28:28

Book A Free Financial Coaching Call!

We're chatting with Catherine, a super mom and special ed teacher who's been rocking a side gig in copywriting. We're diving into her inspiring journey of turning financial chaos into calm.

Catherine's World: Catherine juggles a demanding teaching career with her creative side hustle in copywriting, all while being a mom to two adorable, energetic little ones. It's a life filled with love, laughter, and, let's be honest, a bit of chaos too.

The Lightbulb Moment: Picture this: Catherine, just like any of us, stumbles upon our podcast-specifically an Impulse Spending episode. It sparks something in her. She's dealing with rising daycare costs that are giving her sleepless nights. She thinks, “Enough is enough,” and decides it's time for a change.

Budgeting Like a Boss: Here’s where Catherine turns things around. She starts by mapping out where her money is going (and where it needs to stop going!). She sets some real goals, giving every dollar a job. It’s not just about cutting back; it’s about making smart choices.

Sinking Funds to the Rescue: Catherine introduces us to her game-changer strategy: savings buckets. Think of these like little pots of gold for different needs – one for daycare, another for those unexpected 'oops' moments, and even one for celebrating the good times, guilt-free.

Snag Our Simplified Budget System!

Tired of spending hours managing your finances? Wish you could automate the process to save time and money? Well, you're in luck! In this podcast, we'll show you how to automate your finances so that your money works for you, not the other way around. We'll cover everything from setting up a budget to automating your bills and investments. So whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned financial expert, there's something for everyone in this episode.

Benefits of Automating Your Finances

There are many benefits to automating your finances. Here are just a few:

  • Save time. No more logging into your bank account to pay bills or transfer money. Everything will be done automatically.
  • Reduce stress. Worrying about your finances can take a toll on your mental health. Automating your finances can help you take a step back and relax.
  • Increase your chances of success. When your finances are automated, you're more likely to stick to your budget and reach your financial goals.

How to Automate Your Finances

Automating your finances is easier than you think. Here are the steps you need to take:

  1. Create a budget. This is the foundation for all your financial decisions, including automation.
  2. Set up direct deposit. This will ensure that your paycheck is automatically deposited into your checking account.
  3. Create separate accounts for bills, spending, and savings. This will help you keep your finances organized and make it easier to automate payments.
  4. Set up recurring transfers. This will automatically transfer money from your checking account to your bills, spending, and savings accounts.
  5. Invest your money. This is a great way to grow your wealth over the long term. You can automate your investments by setting up a regular contribution to a retirement account or investing in a robo-advisor.

Tips for Automating Your Finances

Here are a few additional tips to help you automate your finances successfully:

  • Choose the right tools. There are many online tools and apps that can help you automate your finances. Research the different options and choose one that meets your needs.
  • Start small. Don't try to automate everything at once. Start with one or two tasks and gradually add more as you get comfortable.
  • Be flexible. Your financial situation may change over time. Be prepared to adjust your automation settings as needed.

166 | Budgeting Hacks: Level Up from Beginner to Pro (Budgeting Tips, Steps & Automation)06 Nov 202300:22:59

Snag Our Simplified Budget System!

👋 Hey there, amazing listeners! Are you ready to take your budgeting skills from beginner to pro? If you've ever felt stuck or paralyzed when it comes to budgeting and wondered when to start saving or paying off debt, you're in the right place! We're here to guide you through the steps to level up your budgeting game. Let's go from that initial budget creation to building a legacy. 🚀

👩‍👧‍👦 Let's talk about the three phases of budgeting – Beginner, Middle, and Pro!

Beginner Budgeting - Getting Started:

- Many of our clients and listeners have never started a budget or found it hard to stick to one. Don't worry; you're not alone!

- The first step is to get on a budget, and we're here to help you with that.

- Start by creating a Bills Account where you'll pay your bills and debt from your income.

- Separate your bills from your spending and focus on minimal spending. Ask yourself, "What do I absolutely need?"

- Keep your spending categories minimal at the beginning – pocket money, restaurant expenses, gas, and groceries.

- Create wiggle room in your budget by cutting unnecessary expenses and putting extra money toward debt.

Middle Budgeting - Learning and Perfecting:

- In the middle phase, you're still learning, but you're not a beginner anymore.

- Perfect your Paycheck Plan: Deposit your income into a Bills Account, then allocate it to spending and savings.

- Implement automation to fund your categories automatically.

- Add minimal savings buckets for immediate needs like holidays, car maintenance, and birthdays.

- Start identifying and planning for "unexpected" expenses ahead of time.

- Continue to pay off debt while building good budgeting habits.

Pro Budgeting - Graduating to Pro Status:

- Fully fund your savings buckets and plan for expenses 12 months ahead.

- Consider ramping up your investments, like increasing contributions to retirement plans or starting a Roth IRA.

- Refine your spending habits and reduce unnecessary expenses.

- Have conversations about responsible spending with your kids and teach them about budgeting.

- Enjoy the freedom of being more generous, whether it's giving to causes you care about or helping your kids with their financial future.

- Dream big and set ambitious financial goals, watching your net worth grow and securing your financial future.

160 | Stop Overspending Now: Take Control of Your Spending Habits23 Oct 202300:17:37

Snag Our Simplified Budget System!

Hey there, fabulous listeners! 👋 In this episode, we're diving deep into the world of spending and how to get a grip on it. 💸 We've got some eye-opening stories to share, actionable steps, and a whole lot of budgeting wisdom coming your way. Let's get started! 🚀

We had a client who didn't realize she was spending $2,675 a month without accounting for bills, savings, or debt payments! Sound familiar? 🙋‍♀️ Overspending or random spending is more common than you think.

1. Creating a Personal Spending Budget: 💰 Step one in taking control of your spending is figuring out what you're already spending. Track your expenses for 90 days and use highlighters to categorize them. It's an eye-opener!

2. Spending with Purpose: 🤝 Step two is creating a personal spending budget. This is your pocket money category, a guilt-free zone for spending on things you love. It's all about being in control and spending with intention.

3. Planning for the Expected:* 🗓️ We challenge the idea of "unexpected expenses." With proper planning, most of these so-called unexpected costs can be anticipated and budgeted for. From car maintenance to birthdays, we've got you covered.

4. Savings Buckets: 💼 Start planning ahead for regular expenses like Christmas or back-to-school shopping. These are like little savings buckets to dip into when needed.

5. A Balanced Approach: ⚖️ We believe both partners should have their own personal spending budget, and it should be a mutually agreed-upon amount. It's all about teamwork.

6. The Freedom to Spend: 🙌 When you have a clear budget and personal spending categories, you'll feel more in control and less stressed about spending. It even reduces emotional spending!

Remember, taking control of your spending is empowering, not restrictive. It's about creating a plan that gives you the freedom to spend on what truly matters to you. 💪

282 | Bills & Your Budget: Common Mistakes To Avoid 29 Jul 202400:20:38

Snag Our Signature Budget Template!

Hey there, budget besties! 🎙️ It's Shana and Vanessa here, and we know you sometimes feel like your bills are playing hide and seek with your bank account. Today, we're diving into the top 12 mistakes that make your finances feel super messy and how to avoid them. Let's get into it!

Episode Highlights:

  1. One Account Chaos

Keeping all transactions in one account is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Solution? Separate your accounts for bills, spending, and savings to get a clear view of your finances.

  2. Multiple Payment Methods

Using different accounts and cards for bills? That's a recipe for confusion. Stick to one account for bill payments to keep things simple and trackable.

  3. Duplicate Payments

Ever paid for Netflix twice? Consolidate all transactions into one account to spot and eliminate duplicate payments.

  4. Overlooked Subscriptions

Those $4.99 subscriptions add up! Regularly review and clean up subscriptions to save money.

  5. Missing Out on Requotes

Not requoting your insurance annually? You could be missing out on savings. Call a broker to get the best deals.

  6. Avoiding Auto-Pay

Afraid of auto-pay? It’s your new best friend. It can save you money and prevent late fees.

  7. Skipping Paperless Billing

Go paperless to reduce clutter and sometimes save money with discounts.

  8. Not Using ACH Payments

ACH payments often come with fewer fees. Make sure to use them to save a bit more.

  9. Overdraft Fees

Overdraft fees are money down the drain. Set up alerts and keep track to avoid these sneaky charges.

  10. Late Payment Fees

Missing due dates costs you. Set up auto-pay and reminders to keep late fees at bay.

  11. Not Reviewing Your Bills

Always check your bills for unexpected charges or increases, especially after promotional periods end.

  12. Forgetting Annual and Quarterly Bills

Annual and quarterly bills can sneak up on you. Set up a separate savings account to prepare for these.

Action Steps:

  1. Separate Your Accounts: Create a dedicated bills account and automate your payments.

  2. Review and Requote: Regularly review your bills and requote services like insurance annually.

  3. Track Subscriptions: Keep an eye on subscriptions and cancel those you don’t use.

We know it's a lot, but trust us, tackling these mistakes will simplify your financial life and save you money. Start with the biggest impact change: separate your bills account and automate your payments.

155 | Grocery Budget Challenge #5: Get The Most Out Of The Sales (BOGO, Sales, Clearance, Grocery Budget Savings, Food Budget)13 Oct 202300:11:56

Grab the Grocery Budget Challenge Checklist

We're back with another episode of our Grocery Budget Challenge podcast series. Today, we're diving into the world of sales and how you can shop smarter, not harder. 🛒💰

Timing is Everything: First things first, folks, timing is key when it comes to snagging those awesome deals. Sales go in cycles, just like the changing seasons. For example, think about berries—they're super cheap when they're in season, right? 🍓 So pay attention to those cycles and buy when prices are at their lowest.

Frozen Section Magic: And remember, if your favorite produce isn't on sale, check out the frozen section. They pick fruits and veggies at their peak, and you can often score great deals there. It's like Mother Nature's BOGO! ❄️

BOGO Mania: Speaking of BOGO, when something you love and use regularly is on sale, grab as much as you can without turning your house into a storage unit. Buying in bulk when your staples are on sale is a budget superhero move. 💥

Price Comparison: Now, let's talk about comparing prices. Sure, you might always shop at your neighborhood grocery store, but have you considered checking out the stores down the street? You might be surprised at the savings just a few blocks away. Use websites and apps to easily compare prices, and remember, driving 45 minutes to save 20 bucks isn't really saving! 🚗💨

Planning Meals Around Sales: Here's a pro tip—plan your meals around the discounted items you find. If you see a fantastic deal on chicken, start thinking about all the delicious chicken dishes you can whip up that week. It's like meal planning meets bargain hunting. 🍗🍽️

Be Flexible: Sometimes, you'll stumble upon unexpected clearance items or sales that weren't in your original plan. Don't be afraid to adjust your meal plans and take advantage of those deals. It's all about adapting to the savings opportunities that come your way. 🛒🧐

Freeze It: If you bought something on sale but can't use it right away, don't let it go to waste. Freeze it! This way, you've got a freezer stocked with discounted goodies for future meals. ❄️🍴

Stay Focused: Lastly, create a shopping list based on your meal plan and stick to it! Don't get distracted by shiny objects or impulse purchases. Staying focused will help you stay within your budget. 📋💡

154 | Grocery Budget Challenge #4: Shop Label-Savvy (Grocery Savings, Save Money on Groceries, Food Budget)12 Oct 202300:10:44

Grab the Grocery Budget Challenge Checklist

Hey there, amazing ladies! It's Shana & Vanessa, and we're back with Day 4 of our Grocery Budget Challenge podcast series. 🛒💰

Today, we're diving deep into the magic of labels, those little bitty, tiny, small things that hold the key to saving money on your groceries. So buckle up, ladies, and let's empower you to make better choices for both your budget and your wellbeing.

1. Cost Per Ounce (or Unit) 💲

   - This is our favorite! It's like a secret weapon. Look at the cost per ounce or unit. It's the same for all brands and sizes, making it easy to find the best deal. No one's going to mess with us when we're reading labels!

2. Compare Prices Across Products 🧐

   - Don't just stick to your usual brands; compare prices. You might find a hidden gem that's both budget-friendly and high-quality. Think dish soap, boxed items, or even chicken cuts.

3. Generic or Store Brands 🛒

   - Yep, they're often produced in the same place as name brands. So why pay more for fancy packaging? Turn those labels around and see if it's the exact same product.

4. Ingredients Matter 🧪

   - Dive into the ingredients list. Check for hidden sugars and additives. If you can't read it or don't recognize the word, consider another option.

5. Nutritional Value 🍎

   - Check the label for nutritional information. Are you getting the best bang for your buck? It's not just about saving money; it's about making informed, healthier choices for your family.

6. Non-Negotiables 🚫

   - We all have those items we won't budge on (like Vanessa's pickles). It's okay to splurge on your favorites. But for other items, consider store brands.

7. Eye-Level Trick 👁️

   - Brands pay for that prime shelf space at eye level. Store brands are often just as good and cheaper. So do a little squat or reach to grab them!

8. Create a New Shopping List 📝

   - Based on what you've learned today, update your shopping list with budget-friendly staple items. Mustard, butter, ketchup, almond milk - they all count!

9. Keep Checking Labels 👀

   - Don't stop here. Every time you shop, check the cost per unit or ounce. It's part of your new shopping routine.

So there you have it, Day 4 of our Grocery Budget Challenge. Grab that checklist, ladies, and start making those labels work for you. 🛒💪
